Great video, thank you. I am 32 and have applied to go back to school. My passion is health and fitness. I want to be a RD but am so nervous about taking this HUGE step. And commitment!! Am I too old? Can you get financial aid while during your internship? I have three kids so that is a big concern as I know I won't be able to work while doing the internship. I know this video is from last year but hope you see my comment. Thank you!!!
Yes I did get financial aid during my internship :) During both my undergrad and internship we had classmates of various ages! It's never too old to go after your dreams! I had and still do have so much respect for the individuals in my classes who were parents, worked and went to school! Wishing the best!!
HealthyGroceryGirl Thank you so much! Although I kinda of know it's true... your never too old.. it's nice to hear from someone who works in the field. Thank you!
Kimberly Fortine I read your comment and felt so happy to see it because I am in the exact same position, been a stay at home mom of 3 for seven years and want to go back to school for RD. I am so confused because I am scared of leaving my kids for this huge commitment! 😩
I am very interested in this career but the only thing that is a little discouraging is the income dietitians bring in. Would you say that this career pays very well? I know it depends on certain factors such as the area one may live in, but in general what is your take?
I'm an RD. Pay was NOT good nor was the job market in my area. I got a different job making waaaaaaay more....wouldn't recommend it to anyone frankly. I love the field but not to make a living...

Hola Megan! I got caught up from one of your videos and now I am watching more and more! You are a sweet, beautiful inside and out person. It is very interesting to learn about your career. I am here just to learn more and make some delicious and healthy meals for my family, also I will mixed the recipes with my Mexican recipes and ingredients , Mexican =) Hugs from Tijuana, México....Abrazos, Ferla
I find this very interesting. I have a friend who is a RD in Canada. I'm not sure if there are differences between the US and Canada when it comes to what you learn, but she focuses so much on calories in vs calories out, and says things like your body doesn't know the difference between refined white sugar or corn syrup vs natural sugars like maple syrup or honey. So I guess I'm curious to hear how you found your path of plant based nutrition. I love your approach to nutrition and would love to incorporate more of it into my life!
Thank you so much for this video! I'm thirteen and finding information on nutritionists or dietitian is difficult for me. If you have any websites that have more information please tell me. I took an interest in being a nutritionist and wanted to learn more about it this video was perfect, earned a new subscriber! -Abbey
The reactions that people give to me are sometimes astounding when they ask what is a Registered Dietitian...I never heard of it..lol. (I am up to my last semester in a undergrad program)....I usually tell them if you continue to eat fast food and drink sugary drinks...when you develop a health problem related to those "foods" then the doctor may refer you to an RD.
Hey +Charmaine Blake !! Congrats on being in your last semester of undergrad!! It is amazing how many people do not know what a Registered Dietitian is! Best wishes with your RD career journey!! M
I am currently enrolled at a Canadian school of Natural nutrition and after the almost 2 year program upon completing and passing final exam I will get a designation of an RHN or Registered Holistic Nutritionist.I understand that so many dieticians see holistic nutrition as a bogeyman stuff or look down on anyone without a bachelor degree in science but I am still loving what I do and will be doing and I would personally never bash Dieticians.I believe there is a room for both as long as you did some studies at a certified school.
Hi, I live in Canada (Toronto, GTA area) as well and I am currently trying to decide if I should do dietetics or just nutrition..I saw your post and I would LOVE more information from you and where you went.
Hello Monika! I did my bachelor in another country and I am thinking about this course instead of doing all the process to be a dietitian in Canada. So did this course worth it in your opinion? Thanks!
i know this is an older video but I hope you see my comment, im about to go to fsu for dietetics and exercise physiology and would love to talk more with you about becoming an rd!
hello my name is angelsa i am a student at wake tech and i have an assignement at school to found out some infornation about my dream job which is nutritionist. i have some questions that i need to ask you about the job:1. Why did you choose this career? 2. What do you like the most about this career? The least? 3. What is the potential for advancement in this career? 4. What advice would you give someone just starting out in this career?
Thank you so much for being so helpful! I do have a few questions. First, do you have any tips for the internship? I don't have family support/assistance, so I just really cannot imagine how I'd be able to go to school for my BA full time and simultaneously work enough to save up enough to get me through an additional year of working at the internship. I worry that, since it seems very unlikely that I'd be financially able to do that, I may not be able to pursue this despite it being my dream. Any tips with this are appreciated. Also, how do you do your continuing education credits? 75 credits seems like quite a lot, even over 5 years. Do you just continuously go to college or do you earn those credits in different ways? And one more question! I've had a hard time finding schools in my area that offer this program, but I did find a Dietetic Tech program that would be possible for me. Would you be able to elaborate on how they're different or what I could do for work? I'm definitely interested in the entrepreneurship opportunities, as well as the private practice ones. I've done some research on it myself but it seems that everything I've seen just groups RDs and Dietetic Techs together as one career when obviously they're different, so I'm wondering if you can shed some light on that for me. Thanks so much!
+Dezi Hi! I applied for financial aid for my internship which was really helpful! I would recommend looking into that :) 75 credits seems like a lot however there are a lot of opportunities to complete those, especially if you space them out each year :) The credits are earned through a number of ways such as attending workshops, lectures, events, on-going certification programs etc. I want to Utah State University for my dietetic internship so I only have experience from this program to speak of :) My program was a distance program which worked great because it allowed me to complete the internship & not have to move :) I highly recommend Utah State as an internship program :)
Omg thank you so much for the quick and kind reply. You are so helpful. I sincerely appreciate all of this advice. I'm glad to hear that you conquered all the trials you were faced with and ended up doing well for yourself and accomplishing so much. You deserve it.
Yes, and another thing, you mentioned something about being more creative rather than the clinical, science-based side of it. What creative jobs are available in this field?
hello...i have completed my Masters in Microbiology, I want to make my career in nutrition. what should i do for further studies. plz help me for that...its request
I just want to help obese people lose weight like I did, showing them the correct way to eat and exercise, would I need to get the RD degree or can I just be a nutritionist and get my personal trainer certification, I would like to be able to have the option of starting my own practice or working for a hospital/state/government
might as well make videos as you learn. this could solidify your understandings, as well as a little revenue from youtube videos. plus building another social media outlet to promote yourself and business. great idea
I'm am very interested in going to school for this but I'm starting out in community college. Do you believe that community college will give me as good of an education in this career path as say a state college or a nutrition institute?
Thanks for the insight! I'm a little confused on some things just yet. so I'm looking into any online Bachelor programs for Nutrition/Dietetics. I see in the video you explain that the Bachelor's program has to be accredited by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. I can't however find a listing of accredited schools/programs on their website. I stumbled across Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, they have a listing of schools. So I guess my question is, can I just find an accredited online Bachelor's program for nutrition? Thanks for any help people are willing to give me! :)
Also, I see Coordinated Programs in Dietetics (CP) and Didactic Programs in Dietetics (DPD) as options for programs. From what I understand the one that is needed for those interested in become a RD is the DPD program, correct?

Hi Megan, My name is student Annaliese, I am considering a career in dietetics. I was wondering if you have time to answer a few questions for me either over the phone or via email, as to what you do as a dietetic professional and how you got there. Respectfully, Annaliese Rhinehart
Hi! It would really vary based on what courses you've already taken. Speaking with a university counselor or dietetics professor they would be able to look over everything and provide custom guidance for you :)
Hi I'm from Delhi and I really liked your video .provided a great information. If I'm having an option of choosing bw bsc in nutrition and dietetics and bsc home science ..which one is more preferred.please reply earnestly
Hi I have completed my masters in Foods and Nutrition in India and planing to migrate to Canada. I would like to know what are other procedures to get a job as a dietitian there. Could you please throw some light on it dear
Wow. That’s horrible that you have to work without pay for a whole year. It’s a shame you can’t work during the last 2 years of school. That’s a really big financial set back because I’m sure the loans need to be paid as soon as you graduate. Thank you for your information and advice.
baddabing28 Hi! Thanks so much for watching :) Your internship is work but it’s technically another year of university. Similar to most university programs you pay for the experience and education, they don’t pay you. Student loans generally have a grace period before they kick in and they have payment plans. It is something to plan for and it a commitment for sure! The amount of school and passing the exam is why RDNs are the only credentialed nutrition experts recognized by the medical community and many companies in general, which is key for getting a good job :)
Good day, I am a registered nutritionist-dietitian here in the philippines may I ask if I can practiced my profession in Saskatchewan, Canada with a license from the Philippines? Thank you.
I was halfway through when I just couldn't do it anymore because tuition was so expensive and I had found out that the internship was up to $60k and it is not secure that I was going to even get matched. I was doing so well, but it is a very competitive field and only very very VERY few will become RDs. And even then you're not secured of finding a job. Often RDs end up doing something else anyway. I still love food and nutrition but not as crazy as the girls I used to go to university with. They were really obsessed and unhealthy.
+Fiorella Marisol I am so glad you mentioned this. I would have liked to know the cost beforehand too. I am doing part-time for my DPD in order to finish with no debt, and now I'll have to take out a loan for 10k if I get matched to an internship here in Georgia. You always have the option of becoming a RDT and then applying for an internship afterward.
Thanks for sharing! I hate loans and don't plan on taking one out. I plan on saving up and using grants to get me through the process. But with the credentials, you're not tied down. The possibilities are endless, trust me!
I m intersted in food and nutrition course...coming to canada as international student...want to be a RD in future...tell us about what course I should opt in diploma...which will lead me to degree to be a RD....pls help me...
I do! Everyday. I am a media dietitian, run a business called Healthy Grocery Girl and work as video host, video producer and consultant. You can learn more by visiting our website HealthyGroceryGirl.com
m a registered nutritionist-dietian here in phil. Do you have any information where can i apply for work or a sponsored student visa for nutrition, outside philippines?
It doesn't hurt to shadow, intern or reach out to a Dietitian in a field you're interested in, in high school! That way you can learn early if it's a career path you're truly interested in! There are SO many different job paths for RD's so it's good to see what is out there and what may be the best fit for you! :)
If you do not complete the required continuing education credits within your certification cycle, your RD credentials expire. So it's very important to keep up with continuing education!
Hi! I recently became interested in becoming a dietitian however, I'm graduating from my university with a Human Biology degree. Do you have any tips on how I can still become a dietitian? Thank you!
Hi! I would meet with your academic advisor or counselor for guidance! They will best be able to look at the courses you've currently taken and see which classes you still need to take :)
+Viviene Tiu nope, similar to teaching, social work and nursing, you just need to complete continuing education units. These are available online (often free), classes offered at hospitals or education institutions (can be free as well) or via books that are sent through mail (often for a cost).
You do not need to go back to school. You attend workshops, certification programs, courses and programs approved for for RDN CEUs. You can learn more at www.cdrnet.org
Hello! I am currently a nursing student but I find myself leaning more towards dietetics, would you recommend this move? I love that it is still in the medical field and I love the fact that with dietics I would still be able to clinically help people. I guess my question would be , do you think it is worth it? to switch from Nursing to Dietics? I know it depends on the person but I don't feel like my heart is set on nursing but I would love to help people as my career. Thank you for any input this receives!
Mariela I am not a nursing major anymore but before I changed I did consider nutrition/dietetics & my advisor was going to allow me to take a few nutrition courses along with some other courses I needed with my other major so maybe you could talk to your advisor about allowing you to take a class like principles of nutrition or a food lab while still being a nursing major or you could change your major to nutrition/dietetics & still take some courses that would count for nursing. You never know until you try it! And don't get discouraged to try it because it may not be as much money as nursing because at the end of the day you want to do something that makes you happy & not all about money- something that took me a while to learn. I wish you the best of luck!
Hey thanks so much for this reply! My main reasoning for switching to dietetics would be because of my anxiety, I don't know if how well I would do with so much stress and death around me all of the time. I will consider your advice. Thanks again!!
Hiii i M from india i love ur vedioes i want to knw i had done masters in food and nutrtion i would like to knw that i m elegible to give rd exam in canada.
How can you do an internship if you already have a full time job? I won't be able to fford to quit or take time off. I alrady have too many bills to even try putting money away. Any advice?
Hi! I took out student loans to cover my school + living expenses for the internship season. The internship is a full time job + school work in the evenings, so there is not time for an additional job. I took an accelerated program however there are programs that are longer so you could stretch out the program to maybe also work at the same time! Every program is different :)
I would rather be a Nutritionist (I am sure there is a difference between them and dieticians) and I can only do an online degree and the AND site did not give me the information I am looking for. Do they have to be the ultimate source of what schools I can attend that will be recognized as accredited enough to be recognized for me to be able to take a registration exam? I am so confused about how to go about applying to the right school…especially because I have to resort to taking my school completely online. I wonder which choice to make primarily because I don’t want to “earn” a dud degree that no one will recognize or accept for when I take a state exam. Any advice?
Reema Kobrosly rema Ascend website lists several schools that are accredited and will allow you to sit for the exam. The one that I’ve been looking is Kansas State University. It’s all online.
I think they may use it sometimes but they usually don't. Most of them collect the medical information of the patient and then they carryout about 6 types of assessments by themselves.
not anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, im taking a nutritionist degree ( acredited) doctors go to school for i dont know how long; and what do they know? nothing!!!
+Amanda Ashbrook I do not :) My internship was a dual program & I am just 12 credits shy of my Masters however I decided I was not interested in reapplying to complete those credits to get my Masters. I was ready to invest my time & money on starting my business and being self-employed it hasn't been necessary for me to have my Masters :) However, it just depends on everyone's personal career path if a Masters is necessary / helpful for their RD career :) xx M
I think you're being unnecessarily rude. It's a perfectly fine question since the majority of dietitians are women, it's a very female predominantly field. You more likely to see women talk about dietetics than men. CDR.NET showed data saying that there are 84,177 female dietitians and roughly 3,160 male dietitians.
If you're interested in a career in dietetics I hope you find this video helpful!! Thanks for watching!! :)

+P3acexL0veScr1be Thank you! So glad you found it helpful :) I love learning about other careers as well. It's always amazing how much goes into other professions that we don't even know about simply because it's just not our personal career!! xx M
This was very helpful, sounds like a lot. I am in my Associates program of nutrition, long way to go.
I’m on my third year in Consumer Science in Food and Nutrition at University of South Africa. My long term goal is to be a Dietitian.
You can do it!! Wishing you the best!!
Too old???? LOL!! I’m 54 and just thinking about getting started!! 😄
@@jessefoster5907 What field do you work? Still in nutrition?
I am currently in a junior college working toward a degree in nutrition this awesome that site you listed on your page was so helpful thank you
+kristina Ann So happy to hear you found this video helpful!! Thanks for watching!
Great video! You answered most of the questions as I thought of them.
Great minds!! I'll send any USA peeps to you!! Fab videos megan xx
+Nichola Whitehead (Nic's Nutrition) Awesome! I'll do the same for any future UK RD's!
Crazy how you can go though medical school and rarely ever learn anything about nutrition.
Wow. So useful information. Thank you!
I love your approach to nutrition and would love to incorporate more of it into my life!
this was very good information..thanks so much!!!
Thanks!
@@dancerbabe02 Did you decide? if you took the course I wanna know your opinion! Thanks
thanks alto for the valuable informations, that i have been looking for .
i know this is an older video but I hope you see my comment, im about to go to fsu for dietetics and exercise physiology and would love to talk more with you about becoming an rd!
If I have a nutrition and dietetics program that is not accredited what should I do?
Im happy my employer will cover the tuition cost 100 percent.
That's wonderful! What a blessing! :)
Thanks for sharing! What steps did you find most challenging?
Thank you so much for the information (:
hello
my name is angelsa
i am a student at wake tech and i have an assignement at school to found out some infornation about my dream job which is nutritionist.
i have some questions that i need to ask you about the job:1. Why did you choose this career?
2. What do you like the most about this career? The least?
3. What is the potential for advancement in this career?
4. What advice would you give someone just starting out in this career?
very clear information Can't wait to become a RDN someday!!😉😇🙏
Yay! You got this!
thanx for advice,I like your career
Thank you! :)
Very informative, thank you.
You deserve it.
can you travel being a registered dietitian? i mean... could you work online? is it eady to travel places and find work there as a dietitian?
Yes, and another thing, you mentioned something about being more creative rather than the clinical, science-based side of it. What creative jobs are available in this field?
Thanks for the video! Do you have any advice for someone who already earned a BA but just changed directions to wanting to go into nutrition?
Thank you!! 💗 it helps a lot!!
hello...i have completed my Masters in Microbiology, I want to make my career in nutrition. what should i do for further studies. plz help me for that...its request
I just want to help obese people lose weight like I did, showing them the correct way to eat and exercise, would I need to get the RD degree or can I just be a nutritionist and get my personal trainer certification, I would like to be able to have the option of starting my own practice or working for a hospital/state/government
Iam. Not remembering the studied subjects.......we have to the things that we are studied or we will learn from internship? Please reply me
very informative video. I'm going to school to become a RD but I would like to teach people through my blog and TH-cam videos. is that a good idea?
might as well make videos as you learn. this could solidify your understandings, as well as a little revenue from youtube videos. plus building another social media outlet to promote yourself and business. great idea
Great idea
Kindly guide about international students. How we can apply and get practicing license?
I have a liberal studies degree and have been out of college for over five years- where do I begin?
Where can I began i would like to know if I have to go to college and start classes or where do I began? Please help me!! Can I go straight to a university or do I have to go to college? I have only gone to college 1yr but was only taking regular college clases nothing major. !! Can anyone help me? TIA!!
I did MSc in food science and nutrition should I do Phd.or do 6 month training to become Good dietetan !!
Also I have a question, if you're Vegetarian or Vegan - can you still be a RD? Thank you!
Of course! Nutrition is not one-size-fits-all :)
Yes but you will quit veganism
Hi Megan, My name is student Annaliese, I am considering a career in dietetics. I was wondering if you have time to answer a few questions for me either over the phone or via email, as to what you do as a dietetic professional and how you got there. Respectfully, Annaliese Rhinehart
Already have a BS in engineering. How do I know which extra courses I need to take? Thank u
You're real gorgeous, you should be an actress thank you
Thank you so much!
Thank you.
Having a dwi disqualify you from being a dietician?
I was halfway through when I just couldn't do it anymore because tuition was so expensive and I had found out that the internship was up to $60k and it is not secure that I was going to even get matched. I was doing so well, but it is a very competitive field and only very very VERY few will become RDs. And even then you're not secured of finding a job. Often RDs end up doing something else anyway. I still love food and nutrition but not as crazy as the girls I used to go to university with. They were really obsessed and unhealthy.
+Fiorella Marisol Yes school can be so expensive! That's why I loved my dietetic internship because it was one of the most affordable options!!
Fiorella Marisol where do you live?
Thanks for sharing! I hate loans and don't plan on taking one out. I plan on saving up and using grants to get me through the process. But with the credentials, you're not tied down. The possibilities are endless, trust me!
I m intersted in food and nutrition course...coming to canada as international student...want to be a RD in future...tell us about what course I should opt in diploma...which will lead me to degree to be a RD....pls help me...
I have done bachelor's degree in biotechnology . I want to know whether am eligible for this program or not ?
dude how am i supopsed to gotoschool for 5 years and financially prepare to work 40 hours per week for free?? for like 30 weeks??
Do you still practice this as a career? I just found your channel & I noticed u don’t have any updated videos about RD
I do!
Do you recommend participating in work experience as a dietitian during high school?
It doesn't hurt to shadow, intern or reach out to a Dietitian in a field you're interested in, in high school! That way you can learn early if it's a career path you're truly interested in! There are SO many different job paths for RD's so it's good to see what is out there and what may be the best fit for you! :)
What if you don't continue educational credits? Is your RD exam still valid then??
If you do not complete the required continuing education credits within your certification cycle, your RD credentials expire. So it's very important to keep up with continuing education!
Hi! I recently became interested in becoming a dietitian however, I'm graduating from my university with a Human Biology degree. Do you have any tips on how I can still become a dietitian? Thank you!
Hi! I would meet with your academic advisor or counselor for guidance! They will best be able to look at the courses you've currently taken and see which classes you still need to take :)
by "continuig ed" do u mean u have to go back to school and take exams every 5 years again??
You'll make more money as a nurse....wouldn't recommend the change
Would a bachelors in clinical nutrition work?
Thank you very informative
Thank you for watching! :)
Mam after bsc nutrition and dietetics we got RD place?or after completing msc?
Is easy find job in a hospital? I'm from California
what if I m studying b tech.food technology
any chances ??of being nutritionist
What types of things count as continued education credits?
It can really vary! www.cdrnet.org has more information on approved courses, workshops etc :)
Can PCM student go into dietetics
I want to be a dietitian nutritionist 😊😍
Mam,
Can you plz tell me about its scope? And RD use stethoscope?
I think they may use it sometimes but they usually don't. Most of them collect the medical information of the patient and then they carryout about 6 types of assessments by themselves.
Is 40 years old to late to become a RD
Unfortunately now they are requiring you to have a masters starting 2024! Just something to think about
How long did your internship take?
+Shirla Phoutthavong A little less than a year for me personally however internship lengths vary. However, they are usually 1 - 2 years.
Sounds like another good way to accrue insurmountable student loan debt
not anyone can call themselves a nutritionist, im taking a nutritionist degree ( acredited) doctors go to school for i dont know how long; and what do they know? nothing!!!
All this for 60K a year?
What if you have a BS in Nutrition and not Dietetic
Do you have your masters?
+Amanda Ashbrook I do not :) My internship was a dual program & I am just 12 credits shy of my Masters however I decided I was not interested in reapplying to complete those credits to get my Masters. I was ready to invest my time & money on starting my business and being self-employed it hasn't been necessary for me to have my Masters :) However, it just depends on everyone's personal career path if a Masters is necessary / helpful for their RD career :) xx M
Some schools and jobs require a masters. Mine did...
Is a dietitian only for girls?
Yes. And small puppies. Are you for real?
I think you're being unnecessarily rude. It's a perfectly fine question since the majority of dietitians are women, it's a very female predominantly field. You more likely to see women talk about dietetics than men. CDR.NET showed data saying that there are 84,177 female dietitians and roughly 3,160 male dietitians.
Hahaha yes
Not they require a masters degree
