The Strymon Timeline has been on my board for 12 years, and since I got the LVX, I’m seriously considering to replace it. There’s still some things that kind of hold me back: 1. Timeline has looper undo/redo (when used with an external MIDI controller). With a very specific implementation, not removing the last overdubbed layer like on most other loop recorders I know, but removing ALL overdubs. This has its pros and cons, I love it for structuring my live looping songs. LVX looper doesn’t have undo/redo yet (firmware 1.1). 2. Timeline looper has smoothing of in/out points: There’s an ultra-short fade in when you start a recording or start overdubbing, and an ultra-short fade out when you’re exiting overdub or stopping the looper. LVX doesn't have that (yet), hence you can get quite some clicky noises. 3. Timeline has a nice ducking delay. LVX envelop modifier could in theory do ducking, but it is buggy, doesn't really work for ducking (yet), I tried hard. 4. Timeline ICE delay has a very nice and specific sound. Yes, you can get close, as you show in your vid ... but you cannot fully replicate ICE (which as I understand it doesn't work with pitch shifting, but with altered speed multiple playback of delay taps). 5. Timeline will keep its analog dry path no matter whether you put the looper pre or post delay engine (which effectively equals the PRE+DRY and POST MIX positions on the LVX). When you put the Looper in PRE+DRY or POST MIX, or when you activate spillover, you will lose the analog dry path on the LVX. 6. Timeline’s current firmware allows switching sync to MIDI clock on/off per preset. Great for slapback or faux reverb presets which you don’t want to sync to any BPMs, but to remain at fixed ms values. LVX main delay engine doesn't have this option yet. 7. LVX still has some bugs. They include timing instabilities of the LFO: With certain modules active, a LFO set to quarters subdivisions will run significantly faster, or slower, than the current BPMs. Other users have reported problems when syncing the LVX to external MIDI Clock, I haven't tried that yet. Other stuff to consider when you plan to make the move from Timeline to LVX: 1. Timeline has 200 presets. I actually never needed more than 50. On the LVX, which has only 100 presets, I already made like 80 presets ... the LVX could actually use 200, having a much wider sonic palette than the Timeline. 2. Timeline can do programmable stereo boost of up to +3dB of the full signal in the analog domain. LVX can only do unity gain on analog level (boosting with the digital Preamp emulations is possible, though). 3. Timeline has a MIDI CC for phase reset, which, I believe, resets the internal modulation LFO. I never used it, since resetting the Timeline LFO is not very interesting. Resetting the LVX LFO when in square mode, or even more resetting the LVX sequencer, would be very interesting though; like, sync rhythmic stuff to an external beat (like drummer, or drum machine); but alas, not available. Yet. 4. Timeline has two more knobs, thus quicker direct access to more fixed parameters (LVX on the other hand gives you two user-definable knobs per preset, which I prefer). My LVX demo: th-cam.com/video/pnBIegSonsQ/w-d-xo.html
Since you have been using the timeline for 12 long years, could it be that you are too familiar and too used to it that it would be difficult to make any comparison to it? If you had the LVX for 12 years and you had the timeline briefly, I wonder what your assessment would be? I am trying to decide between the Timeline and LVX atm. Seems I have a tough decision.
@@unlimitedcosmicspeed Did you check my LVX demo th-cam.com/video/pnBIegSonsQ/w-d-xo.html ? Yep, I only have it since this summer, but I took a deep dive; I think have experimented more with the LVX in those months than with the Timeline in all those years. And I am definitely not married to my Strymon Timeline, nor am I a Strymon fanboy. I think the 7 + 4 points I list above are a quite objective analysis/comparison of features. Would not look much different in a scenario where I had owned the LVX much longer than the Timeline. A subjective factor is that I have got very used to the sound of my favourite Timeline tape delay setting; and I'm still struggling to recreate something similar on the LVX. There are quite some Timeline/El Capistan users on forums like TGP who say that the LVX always sounds digital in comparisong and cannot do tape/BBD delays as convincingly as the Strymons can. I'm not so sure about this ... will dig in deeper ... I plan to make a detailed LVX vs. Timeline video soon.
You really sold me on this. I was thinking it’d be way more complicated. Plus I love the aesthetics of the pedal and the graphics on the menu make it look like it’s from a 70s/80s sci fi movie
I’m really leaning towards the LVX because it truly is an expansive unit with so many features and potential however that pattern setting you have crafted with the timeline is just perfect. I’d like to hear more of that one!
In short pretty damn easy. I’ve got loads of content coming your way on the LVX and will make sure I show how to create and save presets for you buddy it’s on the list now
To me it sounds like the LVX has way more dynamic range. It sounds like the timeline is just delaying all dry signal at the same level, whereas i can hear the LVX more with accented notes and less with unaccented notes.
I know the lvx is capable of creating any delay sound possible but I'm not that good at creating presets that I usually use the lvx for creating new sounds... I also have the Volante so at least I'm covered for tape and drum sounds.... like I know the lvx is capable of sounding like the chase bliss thermae ... I just don't have a clue as to how to get there... bbd structure plus pitch shifting ... but yeah... I really hope there's an upgrade with better presets or the preset sharing capability becomes easier... like an app or something.. anyways... still a beast... still the best... I know I'm not alone when I say I am not using it to it's fullest potential
Hey thanks so much for your comment really insightful. I’m literally uploading a video now to be published in the next 3 weeks around how I taught myself how to use the LVX and piece by piece built my knowledge bank up so I feel really comfortable in getting amazing sounds out of it. Keep an eye out for it it may be of some use to yourself. honestly as one of the pedals I really regret selling I’m so keen to draw some thermae sounds out of it now you’ve mentioned it…..the mission begins
hey buddy, just to let you know im editing a video ready to post in may where I managed to get some cool thermal style sounds from LVX and walk through how I did it....going to put a screen shot of your comment here in the video cut it inspired me to shoot it
Would you say its more user friendly than the timeline? Ive had some issues with my timeline and Strymon engineers have been less than helpful. They need to warranty mine, but that’s a whole other story. I’m searching for something else until my fractal comes
I would say it’s totally different to the timeline. What’s happened with your timeline? I’ve owned mine for ten years and never had any issues so sorry to hear that.
Interesting. I am mostly using the LVX up close more as a studio device atm and haven't played live with it yet. I would assume that I would have my presets locked in by that time so wouldn't need to be adjusting too much on the fly although I can see how that may be a challenge
Don’t let the haters get to you. Seeing someone breakdown learning the UI without prep work was very helpful. I have been wondering if this would be a pedal for me. Your video helped give insight into that. Have you used it live? How are changes on the fly when using it live?
THANKYOU kind sir. Imo if you like modulation and are into pedals that are something more than basic then I would say this pedal is for you. haven’t used it live and i guess it depends on what you’d want to do. If you’re talking taking a preset and being able to bend over and adjust the mix or feedback on the fly then very easy yea. Thanks for stopping by buddy. Lots of LVX content out very soon
If you are an ambient player then yes I’d say the LVX is much more versatile and will give you more options. in terms of distribution….well it has distortion built in….yes it’s very good. You can add it to your dry signal and/or the delay or just the delay for example…yes it’s bloody brilliant
@@nickreesyt thank you. Do you think the navigation is better organized than the Timeline? I'm hesitant to keep Timeline and Big Sky and switch to the LVx to reduce the size on the pedalboard and keep both the precise sounds for rock and a more pop/electro feel.

One difference is that the smaller text is completely unreadable on the floor. A problem that LVX just seems to ignore. And there’s no way to change.
