How To Use A Step Up/Down Transformer

  • Step up/down transformers allow you to step up 110/115/120 volts AC to 220/230/240 volts AC or step down 220/230/240 volts AC to 110/115/120 volts AC.
    This is very helpful when you need to use a 220/230/240 device in the U.S. and you don’t have a 220/230/240 wall receptacle available or don’t have the ability to have a licensed electrician install one for you.
    Since stepping transformers are made to be used internationally, most come with a Schuko plug which is not compatible with receptacles (outlets) available in the U.S.
    To use a stepping transformer in the U.S. to step up the voltage from 110/115/120 volts AC to 220/230/240 volts AC, you must use an adapter that converts the Schuko plug into a standard U.S. NEMA 5-15P (plug). Secondly, depending on the model of stepping transformer used, you typically need to set the voltage switch to 110 volts. The default setting is typically 220 volts and must be changed before plugging the transformer in. DO NOT CHANGE THE VOLTAGE SWITCH WITH THE TRANSFORMER PLUGGED IN.
    The adapter used in this video is available at the below links.

    Base on this video, I guess it's okay / safe to plug a transformer into a power strip as opposed to directly to mains power / wall socket.(as long as the power strip can handle the load)

      120 volts from power strip and typically 15 amp breakers so it would depend how many amps ur trasnformer draws

    Im assuming if you plug it, wall>transformer>extension, the entire extension strip outlet would be what the output of the transformer is?
    What if I plug it the way it is in the video, but the wall is 220v, so the transformer plugged into extension is stepdown to a 110v output and i use device for the one plugger into the transformer a 110v device, but the other outlet of the extension to a 220v?

    Good day. If my device says 100-220v, does that mean I don’t need a transformer and would it affect my device if I use a transformer anyway?

    I recommend cheap multimeter when testing. The switch can be put wrong way round. I plugged mine and I had 240 in 450 out.switch in wrong position. A multi tap transformer would have better. As I like using isolation transformer for electronics. But earth is connected on this brand.

    hi, is it normal for the transformer to vibrate when plugged into the wall?

    • @tsumi.24
      @tsumi.24 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it’s normal because I recently bought a Korg X5D from the United Kingdom. The seller gave me a Uk Adapter and he told me that I need to buy a US adapter and use the Seven Star converter. I bought it today and when I set the voltage to 110v, it vibrates when plugged into the wall. I think it’s normal.

    • @stevenmonson5149
      @stevenmonson5149 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Herts remains the same a step up see saw of volts double amps reduce in half or visa versa step down amps double volts reduce in half. That's to say sign wave hight volts increase/decrease but Hertz frequency wave to wave peak distance is same distance/time

    Does this thing have actual ground connection?

    • @luckys1227
      @luckys1227 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most likely through the plug socket

    • @dmmartindale
      @dmmartindale 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That particular design of plug seems to be one called "hybrid E/F". It is designed to be grounded via grounding fingers at the edge of the socket recess of a Type F socket, or the protruding ground pin of a Type E socket. Unfortunately, the adapter shown in the video does not appear to provide grounding through either of these methods, so the metal case of the transformer and the output socket ground are probably left floating.
      But this is just due to a poor choice of adapter; the transformer itself looks like it's designed to be grounded.

      You probably are plugging a two prong plug in and the receptacle needs 3 prongs (ie with a ground or earth prong) to release a safety block. Change your 2 prong plug to a 3 prong plug even if there is no ground wire to attach and it will plug in releasing that safety block

      You wouldn't.
      Since their outlets consist of 220v, there would be no need for a step-up transformer.
      Otherwise, you just flip the switch the opposite way.

    Why do they label everything and wind the core for 115 volts when they haven't used 115 volts in decades?
    Everything is 120 volts, maybe even 125 volts now.
    Like with a variac, instead of cranking it up to 115 volts at 100% you can crank it up to 149 volts at 100%.
