  • Not EVERYBODY needs or wants a big, expensive truck just to tow an RV around (especially folks who only camp now and then). So today I wanted to go thru a handful of options that come in under 5,000lbs GVWR that may work for things like some tow package SUVs or medium sized pickups!

    Josh is about the only RV dealer willing to discuss trailers at their maximum weight, not what trailers have under 5,000 pounds dry weight like most (including many manufacturers) dealers and salespeople do. A huge kudos to the RV Nerd for doing it right-again.

      Yep! Newer rangers (2019 and up) have 7500lbs towing capacity. I've got a 2015 Jayco jayflight slx 184bh. Love it! But would love a little more space. Just don't want to tow something super long but know my truck can handle something a little heavier than most SUVs.

    I don't think Bish carries them, but the Rove Lites by Travel Lite, are all under 2750 GVWR. I have a 2023 14BH, and live in it full time. I'm only having buyer's remorse because the 2024 models, to include a few new floorplans, have much bigger grey and black tanks. All 2023 and newer models are equipped with Tucson Sway Control, which utilizes sensors on the trailer frame to detect sway, and apply brakes on the appropriate side to keep the trailer in line with the tow vehicle. Also the newest year models are equipped with 12v rooftop AC, rather than a standard window unit installed through the side wall. My unit had a dry weight at delivery of just under 1900 pounds.
    Upgrading to a rooftop AC, while moving the fan from the main area to the bathroom, is a priority for me. It was 96* here in South Texas today, and my little 5000 BTU AC kept it just tolerable, though not comfortable.

    Man Josh, I'm glad you made this video. This was us at the start of our RV adventure. We started with a large SUV and it moved our RV safely, but not comfortably. We were fortunate to have enough money left in the budget to buy a 2500 diesel truck. But, many people can't. This is a great video! Thanks!

    My wife and I bought a Wildwood FSX 161 QKT after seeing your video on it and the local dealer actually having one in stock. We looked at it because of the rear bedroom and no slide. We love the camper and so do our 2 cats who love to go camping with us. It is perfect for the two (four) of us. We probably wouldn't have found this model without your videos. Thank you for the heads up on this floorplan!!

    Our first tow vehicle was a 2001 Explorer and we towed a ~3K trailer with a 450 lb tongue weight. Even though we were well within towing specs for the Explorer the tongue weight did take a lot of weight off of the steering axles. Being a body on frame vehicle there was no issue with using a weight distributing hitch to restore weight back to the front. The same cannot be said for many unibody SUVs on the market today. As the tongue weight gets heavier it will shift weight from the steering axles so weight will need to be restored to safely tow the trailer. As a result owners of SUVs need to not only run the various weight calculation but they need to verify with the SUV manufacturer that the vehicle supports a WDH. If not they need to look into something with very low tongue weights like a popup/tear drop or consider upgrading their vehicle.

    @RVDumpStation 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Uncle Josh, something that might be worth noting on this topic is to know if your mid sized SUV is on a unibody frame. Weight distribution hitches are generally not recommended on unibody frame vehicles. I see a lot of people making this mistake on RV forums online.

    You forgot the one we are in the process of buying! FR Surveyor Legend 19RBLE. We were tired of the pop up trailer we’ve used for 10 years. I’m tired of crawling over my husband in the middle of the night to go outside to use the outhouse. Tired of loading and unloading. Tired of cranking it up and putting everything together. Getting too old for that.
    This model is perfect! Walk around full queen bed. Door away from bed. Slide out dinette (or there is a couch and bar option). Tall enough for hubby and not too tall for me. (I’m under 5’2” and couldn’t reach the push lights on the ceiling in some models we looked at)
    Unfortunately the original camper we reserved was destroyed by a tornado in Ohio the next day so we’re waiting for our new one😢
    Anyway this will be great for our tough little Xterra to pull!!

    1) Great video Josh. Seems like all the RV’s out there requires a 3/4 or 2 ton dually. It’s nice that you had condensed these by a smaller SUV category. Makes it easier on the customer to sort through the noise.
    2) To answer your question…. YES!!! Please do make a video of campers that can be towed by a mid-sized truck such as a Chevy Colorado.
    3) Then while you are at it, you might as well create one for trailers that can pulled by late model half tons such as my 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 HD with a 6L.
    4) Of course if you are going to go through all of that trouble, then you might as well make one categorizing ones that newer half tons can be pulled by as they are built differently now.
    5) But let’s not their bigger brothers of 3/4 & 1 ton dually be left out of the equation here neither. Basically I have just given you job security for awhile here brother. I’m sure that your wife will be grateful for the future paychecks to spend 😆
    6) But last and not least; I think a very interesting video would be for you to visit the only Bish’s store that rents units and report on the best way to rent. Either a video by you alone or a different video where you interview the person who does the renting and teach us potential newbies the best way to rent and what to look for so that we don’t get taken. How it is important to rent first if you’ve done this before so that you don’t make a mistake that will cost you $10’s of thousands of dollars. While I that there are some costs involved, I believe that the industry is making a big mistake of not getting into the rental business. They don’t have to use new units for this. They can get their rental inventory from the used units that people trade in. My plan is to eventually rent numerous times. This will allow me to see if this is the lifestyle that I want to do, as well as see what type that I want to buy, travel trailer, class C? I think a rental video would be very informative.
    37) But until next time…. “Take care, stay safe, have fun, and happy camping everyone!”

    • @JoshtheRVNerd
      @JoshtheRVNerd  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      2.) Thank you!
      6.) We really dont do a lot of rental. Salt lake is about the only place with rental as I recall
      I think places like rvshare are some of the best places to do that right now

    • @texillini1
      @texillini1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I know you don’t, but I believe the industry is missing out on a big segment which would eventually lead to future sales due to the relationship with the customer.

    I appreciated this video, especially learning at the end that you drive a Ford Maverick like myself. Such a great utilitarian "little truck" that does everything well. I would love to see a video about what RVs are available for us down at the 4,000lb limit as well; it seems like the biggest obstacle is the 400lb hitch weight limit, as it seems like many I have researched (proper queen-width bed or dual twin/king convertibles) may be 3,000lbs dry but have a 450lb hitch weight or more.

    Josh. I would like to see similar videos on travel trailers that can be pulled safely with the 2024 GMC Canyon or Chevy Colorado. The only engine available is the 2.7 turbo with towing capacity of 7,700 lbs. Also the considerations of using this vehicle to pull up hills, heavy winds, ability to stop safely going down, etc.

    Thanks for the video! I have been planning for a travel trailer dream for years. Reasons for not pulling the trigger yet all comes down to money. I don't want to have to make a vehicle payment and a trailer payment. I got a 2015 ford explorer 2x4 fwd, my tow capacity is only 2k. So I've been putting money into getting my vehicle tow ready. I got hitch installed. I want to get a tran/engine cooler and suspension air bags. It's been a slow process but I love your videos and I appreciate you replying to all my questions. Thanks!

    Love this format Josh! Big yes from me on a step up on this series talking about mid-size. Quick plug for how folks should determine what they can tow. Total trailer weight is important but payload capacity on your tow vehicle is just as important. My personal recommendation is to let go of generalizations like half ton towable. For example, a given model year Chevy Silverado can have many thousands of pound differences in towing capacity between trim levels and packages. A fully equipped recent generation Ford Expedition can tow more than most standard half ton pickups. #nerdherd

    I'm still waiting on the RVS3 on the Ibex/NoBo. On these small ones - still going to push SUV's. I won't even pull my NoBo 10.6 across town with the Jeep. But again, I recognize the Jeep has the worst suspension ever for putting a trailer on it. I think the Geo/E Pro looked like the most well finished and higher end. If you want to lose the bathroom and poop in a bucket, I really, really like Coachmen/Viking 9000-12000 series. For more of the overlandy, put-stuff-on-the-roof style, they seem like a legit new design.

    My question is on the tongue weight. Sorry...I know this opens up another whole can of worms but we are just getting into RV life in our "empty nester" stage. I've seen opinions all over the map on htis issue. Our Ford Explorer has a tow rating of 5300 and a tongue rating of 530. Where should we be comfortably looking with regard to the tongue weight. Their are tons of options that meet a comfortable 4500 GVWR but then could be 445 or so on the tongue (dry). What is the weight that we should be adding to the tongue (I know it will vary some)?

    • @stormraven4183
      @stormraven4183 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Generally with those you would leave them empty until you reach camp. All of your gear should travel in your vehicle. But you are correct, tongue weight is important, possibly more important than GVWR.

    • @JoshtheRVNerd
      @JoshtheRVNerd  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      No worries. Ask away!
      Tongue weight is tricky because Weight distributing hitches push some of that weight off the hitch/tongue and onto the front of the vehicle and rear of the trailer. But.. I can't tell you how much exactly is shifted because it varies
      A good, easy forumla to estimate loaded hitch weight is as follows
      1.) Start by dividing the empty/brochure hitch weight by the brochure dry weight
      2.) multiple that by the GVWR
      3.) The result is a fairly reasonable estimate of loaded hitch weight
