Rev it !!! and dont be shy to kick it in. Its a motor it doesnt have feelings :) I clutch first to second most of the time around the city. Absolutely in love my 890 duke r. Thanks for the content, keep it up
I have a 21" 890 R . I don't use quick shifter between 1st and 2nd - it has a tendency to grab neutral. I only use quick shifter typically above 4000 rpm and on the gas. Normal street riding I use a mix of clutch and normal shifts with throttle pause. Lastly - Shift arm must be aligned properly as mentioned in your video. Love the bike. they all have quirks.
same with me on my 890 Duke...I dont use between 1-2nd and only on the revs on upshift.... If im just chugging through traffic etc...I always use the clutch. On downshifts, close the throttle all the way down and use some force...dont rest your foot on the shifter as it will predict you are about to use and blip the throttle.. good luck!
Thank you for your explanations. I eventually disabled the QS on my Duke 890 R ; I could not trust this thing anymore ... way too scary when the gear doesn't change with rpms sent to the red zone !
Mines going in for its 12 month service next week . Hoping the QS gets some kind of software update ! Like you not 100% confident with it off the line, if you throw in launch control too ( which is fun ) . Mine certainly doesn’t seem to blip on the way down either . Still love the little beast though 😊
I have a 2020 890R, the quick shifter was horrible when I first got it. It was so bad I didn't even use it. Took it to the KTM dealership and had it recalibrated, tech told me the "datum" marking was not lined up properly as well. Once it was calibrated and lined up, the quickshifter + is brilliant. Anyone who has this bike needs to get this aspect of it fixed. It's one of my favorite parts of the bike. On the track I use the clutch twice, once to get the bike going and once to get it stopped. Other than that, its smooth as butter and works like a charm...
How to you describe the „Horrible“ function? Wasnt smooth or hooky? I have a 890 and the gear changes could be better with the quickshifter, ive ridden 790 and there it was perfect. What did your dealer do exactly?
Hi there, mate I followed the chain tension video on my bike and didn't like how sloppy the chain was, and the bike didn't like it as well . The bike seemed to run ruff and the QS was awful, so I got home from a commute out of Central London and adjusted the chain on the tighter side of the setting eg 5 to 6mm and it improved the QS greatly. And now it's brilliant, just remember you have to be positive with your foot if you are not positive, especially with down shifts it can be jerky. I have found if I get a ruff QS response its normally me not being positive...hope this helps
The 1-2 and 2-3 shifts on the quick shifter have to be very deliberate, fast and firm, and in the high RPM range. Mine is clunky if you’re not paying attention or in the medium RPM range
Cant believe how many are having this same issue (me too, 1-2-3 are were i need to be harder on shifts or I get mis-shift or false neutrel).. frustrating cos its one of the best road bikes I’ve personally ridden
Only issue I had was the chasing tension was way to tight from the factory/dealership. In range (on the loose side), adjusted the sensor and a good lube completely changed the quickshifter. I hated it the 1st thousand miles, then did the above and loved it. 2-5 were seamless, when rpm’s were above 3k.
Thanks , at the moment even above 4000 revs 1-2, 2-3 is not fabulous! At times I don't trust it and am expecting a false neutral and the ensuing brown underpants as you have no engine braking as you steam towards the corner!! is exciting though. On a serious note it may be it just needs calibrating.
I have a two year old 790 Duke. Other than 1st to 2nd all the other shifts are very smooth at low and high speeds. Much better than my BMW R1250GS. It has been a really good quick shifter. Supposedly they made the 890 transmission better, so yours should be like butter....
So many of these complaints sound like operator error. Occasionally I’m not positive with the change and the bike lets me know. Done correctly the changes are smooth as silk.
I have a '21 890 (non r). Just added the QS two mos. ago. Dealer instructed me on upshifts to stay on the throttle and shift deliberately. While this works, I do notice that it shifts into 2nd & 3rd much easier when the revs are a bit higher. Lower rpms make shifts feel notchy and stubborn. I did hit neutral once at lower rpm and also once had it react as if I had pulled in the clutch for a second (but w/o completing the shift). It was weird and unexpected. Moral of the story: try higher revs and see if that helps.
I picked up a 22 890R a month ago. I haven't even got to the break in service yet, but I did have a few problems with the gearbox and quick shifter. It will occasionally shift into a false neutral especially while using the quick shifter. I just installed a Factory Pro shift arm and spring which replaces the standard roller bushing with a ceramic bearing. I expect that to be a major improvement. 1st-2nd shift on really any bike is pretty rough while using a quick shifter. I only use the QS in first while starting from the grid during a race.
Did the Factory Pro shift kit help yours? I’m about to try that next. Already realigned the shift shaft and replaced the factory rearsets with their aftermarket version; both helped, but neither eliminated the problem. The gearbox just has such an inconsistent feel to it and I’ve tried riding around the issue for 2.5 years. Dealer has reprogrammed and even had KTM North America assist them. They just keep telling me it’s something I’m doing. Never had any issues with my R1 QS.
@@prddpm Yes, it improved a lot after the pro shift kit was installed. The only time I hit a false neutral now is when I don't engage an upshift very well. (User error)
Just had my 1st year service and quickshifter+ is still agricultural, skips gears between 2nd and 3rd, 5th and 6th quite regularly. I reversed the gear leaver, 1up and the rest down so I can 'punch it' with my foot. It will shift with angry foot action but it's disheartening when I watch raw sound video's of other bikes when you can hear their quickshifter and blipper are clearly working properly. Took my bike to a rolling road to see if it could be replicated, 1st run in 6th to warm the bike and 2nd run guy shat himself as he thought it would break free and wouldn't continue as it was so abrupt Why on earth KTM decided to not use a pressure sensor type system for the quickshifter. Anyway, bought a '22 MT09, the only thing I miss on the KTM is the front brake and the weight
I’m about ready to go back to Yamaha or Honda as well. This QS is pure nonsense. And surprisingly there are people all over saying about this fix or that fix, but we shouldn’t have to ride around their design flaw. My R1M just worked. I’m also considering the MT09 or XSR900.
@@prddpm The MT09 is a good bike and does exactly what is say's on the tin but the front brake is poor in comparison. 9mm spacers, R1 discs with braided hoses will be going on soon. I chopped my XSR in for the 890r, wished I hadn't in hind sight. Still got the 890 as someone, hopefully soon, will crack the software so I can retro fit a pressure sensor type quickshifter
Had the same issue. Having owned QS on Duke 390, which have similar issue, I’m convinced that this is just a KTM thing. I changed my pegs to factory rear sets from power parts and switch to GP shift. GP shift especially counters the issue pretty well. I’m much much happier now, but still prefers non-QS for 1-2 and 2-3 gear. Give GP shift a try.
@@gsd32i dan, that’s not good. For me i got used to it pretty quick, but that still happens sometime when I’m tired. Well worth the trade off for me tho as it’s easier to put in neutral too.
I have a 2022 890 Adventure. My initial issue was a 5 to 6 false neutral hit twice under power using the quick shifter. My more recent is neutral to 1st where it indicates 1st yet as I pull away goes straight to second. It doesn’t always give a positive clunk for 1st instead seeming to be as if the selector drum hasn’t rotated fully. I suspect this to be the issue on the 5th to 6th problem. As I’ve previously commented “they all do that” won’t do on a bike of this sophistication and price!
I know what you mean, my 890r has a bit of a hissy fit sometimes when I thrash the bike and I get judder as though the qs brain is confused, as I go through the box and can be disconcerting. I do think it’s a poor qs system , the triumph 765 I rode had a qs that was light years ahead of the Ktms one. it’s all based on a magnet system which I think doesn’t quite cut it ….guess it’s the cheaper option.
@@gsd32i I think most use a magnetic sensor (Hall effect). If I don’t change quickly enough the engine will cut out completely as opposed to just a blip to unload the gearbox. I hear the 1290 is very good but there’s no major technology difference. Still love the bike and hope to get it 100%. For the money it needs to be!!
I noticed with my QS that if you are hesitant from 1st -2nd because of the jump in ratios 2nd-3rd has a little bit of a cough most times but again if I'm slightly hesitant probably because the bikes so bloody fast and any members of the constabulary watching would be disappointed in me disappearing into the distance at a great rate of knots. I still love gassing it though 😆 I reckon it might improve with a smaller Countershaft sprocket 1 tooth = 3 on the rear sprocket my 790R Adventure bike loved the smaller sprocket in my opinion it didn't carry top gear that well where as the 890R Duke does everything better FYI I didn't activate the QS at all on the ADV Bike the gearbox wasn't as good as the 890R
Had a 790 Duke with QS and found it clunky 1-2 and 2-1 so used clutch. Also QS felt better when in higher revs and ‘making progress 🙂’. Usually rode using a mix of clutch use and QS as the mood took me. Just had an 890R delivered and not had chance to ride it yet. 😆 Just my 2p worth. 😁👍🏍🧡
Hi and thanks . Love my 890. Always makes me smile like a teenager!! Yup I use combination of QS and clutch . I did re-visit the chain tension after I posted the video and tightened again so it’s definitely on the 5mm end of the recommended range of 2-5mm !! Rides smoother and less clonking from the chain . Interesting if the reprogramming of the QS will make any difference at its 12 month service, next month . Enjoy 😉
Thanks for interesting information,I’m buying a 890 go next week , all information for future reference. Is there anything else that I should look out for ?? . I would be thankful for your comment’s- good or bad 😬
Lots of stuff on the forums . I have ridden mine hard and all good . No thermostat leaks and no valve cover leaks. Chain needs oiling frequently otherwise you’ll get a whirring sound from the front left of the bike and it’ll drive you nuts working out where it’s coming from ! Quick shifter is not good 1-2nd and more than once when selecting the next gear up , generally 2-3rd it gives a lurch back and forward and doesn’t engage . I’ve tried being gentle and kicking the gear pedal but neither results in a better method . Chain adjustment also seems important. Going in for its 12 month service next week so I’ll await any QS software updates etc . Great engine and great brakes …. Still makes me giggle even at 56 ! Lol 😂 enjoy .
Tight ish chain so 5mm and clean chain with wd40 not chain cleaner lube well with quality chain lube or wd 40 after every ride this smooths the qs right out Gets better with milage also I've only done 2500 with my bike and the qs is silky smooth
my 890 r is 2020 model, 1st to 2nd is extremely unpleasent, even when I'm almost full throllte and in high revs, and I have had a few times that I didnt use a strong enough force to change the gear (stuck in 1st but triggered the quick shifter) and the bike cut the ignition for a second and the power comes back shortly after that, that violent push caught me off guard and almost send me to the side of the road. personaly speaking I find that using different oil helped(not much) I'm currently running motul 7100 in my 890, the gear change is more clear than the stock motorex oil, and easier to find netural, but it doesn't help much with the quick shifter problem. my previous bike was a 2017 gsxr1000, and the quick shifter on that bike is completely different, what I think is on most bikes the quick shifter is pressure sensitive, all of them has some what a pretravel, that allows the gearbox to prepare for a gear change, but the duke is only using magnets(Hall effect sensor) which is really a on off switch, it only knows the positions of the shifter but not how hard you're actually pressing the lever, to me i think KTM is just trying to cut cost by fitting all their dukes with cheaper Hall effect sensor style quick shifter, then later charge you money for unlocking this features through buying the tech pak.
It’s certainly full of character but the spitting you off is one I wouldn’t want ! I’ve tightened the chain a bit more and the QS is better . Not perfect so I’ll see what happens after the 12 month service next month when they programme it as part of the schedule. Either way I love the little hooligan thing 👍
@HahrtDood yes my mate bought the 2021 MT09SP, the bike is a lot smooth than the last gen mt09, especially the quickshifter, not quick smooth as liter bikes but close enough to what I consider refine.
I just bought an 890 R. Found the quickshifter a bit jerky when im not very direct on the shifter. As long as im not heasitant it is buttery smooth. As soon as i am too loose on the shifter i starts to get jerky. Maybe that’s what you are experiencing?
Completely agree, mine has done this consistently when I was being too dainty on the shifter. I show the jerkiness on my 5k review video but I also am going to check my chain tension after putting on the new tires I have last weekend.
@@AlejandrosEngineeredLifestyle I’ve tried both as sometimes it feels better with lighter effort, like I was trying to shift it too hard. But then it messes up that way. Most gears are just fine. For me it’s almost always the 2-3 shift; doesn’t matter how hard or soft I shift it. But ninja be noticed that if I’m just putting around slowly and use it, it works just fine. It’s only when I’m on it and going quickly that the QS messes up. My shift arm was not aligned properly from the factory so I’m hoping my 6th reprogramming of the system does it (now that the shift arm is aligned properly).
Not true. Right in the manual it says it just needs to be > 2000 RPMs. I use it for 1-2 all the time. But, sometimes it bogs after the 1-2 shift and then it misses the 2-3 shift. I can almost always tell when it’s going to mess up by how it feels during the previous shift. When it works it’s silky smooth, but when it doesn’t it just sucks. Gonna have to take mine back to the dealer to “reset the parameters” a 6th time (but the first since I realigned the Datum mark).
Hi . It’s booked in for its 1 year service soon and I’ll do an update . To be honest even now at times the QS can be a bit unpredictable even on 2/3rd and gets a bit jolly and doesn’t change up . I’ve tried changing boots etc , change lubed loads , correctly adjusted and all that jazz . I’ll reserve judgement until it comes out from the dealer . But one of the lads that works in the dealer has an 890r and he never uses the QS 1/2nd . Not sure if KTM have put a budget kind of QS on the bike or not ! The triumph 765 one is like butter. Maybe it’s just a twin cylinder thing ? Gearbox etc .😀 bike still makes me laugh loads though !
@@gsd32i thanks for documenting your process! Keep us updated on it. My symptoms are about like yours, but you might have it worse. My 1st-2nd is lurchy. And I sometimes hit false naturals. The best thing for my has been to kick that shifter like a rabid dog! You really gotta show the gear box what you wanna do. I need to try and move the shift linkage to align with the line and notch.
@@gsd32i love the bike, but when this happens it makes me swear, not laugh. And it happens way too often. I’m hoping resetting the parameters will work the 6th time I take it back to the dealer (now that I’ve fixed the factory error with the shift arm datum mark). Changing the position of the datum mark did make the gearbox feel better and go into neutral better, but it didn’t solve the QS issue; afterwards I had 12 misses (11 between 2-3) in 7 laps/55 miles around my local area.
Just had my very first ride on my new 890, that ending of the video is how I felt like already, even if it was bloody cold near zero celsius. Didnt use the quickahifter a lot, but when I did i felt like it wouldnt shift sometimes, should I let go of the gas a little or just keep it open? Subscribed👍
Why won’t KTM address this issue?! I’ve had it for the past year and 8 months. Mine is almost always between 2-3 where it misses. 2021 as well with almost 8000 miles and 5 trips to the dealership to address this.
i know this is an old video, but did you experience any "surging" forward when downshifting (with QS) - mine almost always pushes a bit forward when downshifting, annoying when approaching a stop light or worst a corner.. any info would be appreciated thank you
Hi TBH I found the QS was not brilliant . It would surge on the way up the box when nailing it and get juddery every now and again . I thought overall the QS was at best average and that’s being polite !
I have an 890 adventure R. When quickshift is enabled - I shift from 1 to 2 and in 2nd it hesitates and then takes off. The other gears don't do this. Even if I use the clutch while the shifter is enabled it hesitates in 2nd. I find that if I have the bike wound up to 6000 it won't hesitate.
Thanks . I find now that I use a combination of clutch and clutches changes in the low revs (below 4000) and have given up on 1-2nd clutch less if I’m being honest . First service due soon so will see if anything changes ref software updates etc etc .
Don’t use the quick shifter under 3000 rpm…..when your using it don’t let off the gas…..don’t let off the gas….and you’ll be fine….also I herd if you start the bike and let it run for 15min don’t do anything come back and it see if that helps

Going in for its 12 month service next week so I’ll await any QS software updates etc . Great engine and great brakes …. Still makes me giggle even at 56 ! Lol 😂 enjoy .
Thank you for the reply
Tight ish chain so 5mm and clean chain with wd40 not chain cleaner lube well with quality chain lube or wd 40 after every ride this smooths the qs right out
Gets better with milage also I've only done 2500 with my bike and the qs is silky smooth
Did you have your QS programmed at the first service?
@@JellyBeak thats part of the service schedule so I guess it was done
my 890 r is 2020 model, 1st to 2nd is extremely unpleasent, even when I'm almost full throllte and in high revs, and I have had a few times that I didnt use a strong enough force to change the gear (stuck in 1st but triggered the quick shifter) and the bike cut the ignition for a second and the power comes back shortly after that, that violent push caught me off guard and almost send me to the side of the road.
personaly speaking I find that using different oil helped(not much) I'm currently running motul 7100 in my 890, the gear change is more clear than the stock motorex oil, and easier to find netural, but it doesn't help much with the quick shifter problem.
my previous bike was a 2017 gsxr1000, and the quick shifter on that bike is completely different, what I think is on most bikes the quick shifter is pressure sensitive, all of them has some what a pretravel, that allows the gearbox to prepare for a gear change, but the duke is only using magnets(Hall effect sensor) which is really a on off switch, it only knows the positions of the shifter but not how hard you're actually pressing the lever, to me i think KTM is just trying to cut cost by fitting all their dukes with cheaper Hall effect sensor style quick shifter, then later charge you money for unlocking this features through buying the tech pak.
@@gsd32i yes it's rough but it's so playful, every time I ride it it puts a smile on my face.
@HahrtDood yes my mate bought the 2021 MT09SP, the bike is a lot smooth than the last gen mt09, especially the quickshifter, not quick smooth as liter bikes but close enough to what I consider refine.
Hı, slip -on Akra is sounds nice.
Hi . Not hesitant , can’t go any quicker with my foot 😂. Enjoy the bike . Loads of character 😂
I belive KTM recommend not using QS from 1st to 2nd. I have same issues as you do. QS works best at higher RPM for sure.
Getting the bike serviced soon so will see how it is after the QS is updated . 😊
It’s actually not even capable of using the quick shifter from 1st to 2nd but I have 2022 model idk about older ones
I was told, ride it like you stole it. Works perfectly 😂
What’s the update on your reprogramed QS? Did it help any? I’m having the SAME EXACT problems you’re having
J’avais envoyé la moto au garage pour changé le pompe à huile une fois sortir le quich-shift ne fonctionne plus comment je dois faire
Je dirais de retourner au garage
Just had my very first ride on my new 890, that ending of the video is how I felt like already, even if it was bloody cold near zero celsius.
Didnt use the quickahifter a lot, but when I did i felt like it wouldnt shift sometimes, should I let go of the gas a little or just keep it open?
Subscribed👍
Experiment but normally keep the gas on and hang onto the handlebars . 👍
Quickshifter cuts the power momentarily for you, so you shouldn't need to chop the throttle, that'll probably make things worse.
@@gsd32i appreciate the reply thank you and ride safe
I have an 890 adventure R. When quickshift is enabled - I shift from 1 to 2 and in 2nd it hesitates and then takes off. The other gears don't do this. Even if I use the clutch while the shifter is enabled it hesitates in 2nd. I find that if I have the bike wound up to 6000 it won't hesitate.
Hi buddy..
I found on my late 2021 890 that if I shift early when revs aren't to high its much better...
Thanks . I find now that I use a combination of clutch and clutches changes in the low revs (below 4000) and have given up on 1-2nd clutch less if I’m being honest . First service due soon so will see if anything changes ref software updates etc etc .
Thanks!
What torque did you use for the gear selector screw?
Hi, I think its 6nm, but have a look in the manual, page 355 torque settings. 😀
@@gsd32i found it: both the screws on the rod’s ball joints and the selector are 10Nm + loctite. Screws on the sprocket cover are 6Nm + loctite.
All KTM seen to have this issue
Don’t use the quick shifter under 3000 rpm…..when your using it don’t let off the gas…..don’t let off the gas….and you’ll be fine….also I herd if you start the bike and let it run for 15min don’t do anything come back and it see if that helps
The 15 minutes thing is the recalibration for the engine for winter /summer etc. think I will just use the clutch when 2nd and above , when on a mission !
The QS problems such as on this video is making me sell my 890R I got it in 2022 but really the issues are ruining it
