    One big problem in modern bikes is the abuse of the quickshifter, most shavings tend to come from the gearbox and not from the engine itself.

    Mine looked the same way at the second oil change. I think you have to remember that the oil is shared between the engine and transmission. So you are more likely to see “more” metal from all the gears wearing in as well as the engine components

      Definitely, it is a critical thing to consider. The filtration system has certainly been designed with this added source of metal in mind. I have yet to finalize the analysis video since I’ve been injured but it is all green lights, truly a testament to the system’s design. I really appreciate the comment!

    I experienced the now dreaded premature camshaft lobe wear issue that a number of people have discovered upon doing the first valve check / adjustment at 18k miles for my 2019 790R Adventure. I am pretty sure this occurred because the cam lobe oil jet nozzle got plugged, most likely by a tiny piece of metal shaving. To unplug the oil jet it took a piece of electrical motor winding wire that is approximately the width of a human hair. Very long and sorted story in my case. I ultimately ended up replacing the engine with a 2020 790 Duke engine, which so far has taken me from Seattle to Cabo and back 6k miles.... And I agree, that quick shifter use is a possible, perhaps likely, source of metal shavings.

      I also just experienced the camshaft lobe wear on my ‘20 890 Duke R. Checked the valves at 18k miles and three of the cam followers were also worn down. Now, I get to replace the camshafts and three followers which are on back order for 2 months :(

      I am a mechanic and do all of my vehicles maintence and repairs by my self. I always change my oil at arround 4k-5k miles and of course once a year. My local dealer said you should change oil more flrequently... I am paying 25€ per liter for motorex as the manual suggests and I service my bike in half the manual service mark of 10k miles yet, my exhaust cam is damaged at the first lobe. The strange thing is that mine was on its beginning and cam follower is damaged at the start of the ramp so all valve clearances are almost in spec

    Recently performed an oil change on my 23 890R. Noticed you were using JASO MA motor oil and not MA2 as recommended in the manual ( at least in the 23). MA2 should provide a higher level of static and dynamic clutch friction which should reduce clutch slip and wear.

    raced KTM dirtbikes for years......they always had the magnetic drain plugs and same as you always had shavings on first and sometimes second oil change on new bikes.......brand new motor makes sense to have a few shavings from manufacturing and fact KTM supplies a magnet is even better.....all japanese bike i raced didnt have them so you never saw the shavings......overall i think its good KTM does this although the rider can be alarmed because he actually sees the shavings......
    2003 500sxf, 2004 250sxf, 2006 450sxf, 2007 250sx, 2008-2010 450 sxf/xcf......every single bike had shavings on first oil service......so for me i would expect to find same in any bike....street or dirt, its just an engine and doesnt know what its being used for is my thought process.....
    would rather see them and know they are out of the motor than japanese bikes where you dont know if they came out with oil change or ?........never had an issue on any of my race bikes but did switch to magnetic oil plug on japanese bikes i raced because of the KTM......

First time using Blackstone, how long did it take for them to give you your results? Also did you use both front and rear stands to check the oil level? I just have a rear stand and it shows a full sight glass but when I take the bike off the kickstand and sit on it the sight glass is a little over half full.

From the forums and others here it sounds like that’s pretty typical engine wear. I’ve used Blackstone a couple times and they’ve really nailed it, it took them a couple weeks to get back to me. Yes, both stands really helped me nail the oil level. After the secondary screen replacement that I did for this video mine showed at 3/4 when level on both stands, the seated level should be an accurate representation as well.

    I have noticed metal shavings in all new bikes and cars I have owned, although my 890R is yet to go through first service, still brand new. I'm glad I found your channel you seem to be right up my alley. Random question about the decat link pipe for the 890, is it true that this bike doesn't need a tune after removing the cat box? My dealer said no tune is needed on this bike.. Although I've been a bit skeptical, traditional knowledge has been, slip ons are fine without a tune but removing cats in any way (whether its a full system or mid pipe or what) means you need a tune definitely. (Or some kind of piggyback system). I'm guessing the ECU can handle adjusting AFR enough on its own?
    Anywho, love the content. Keep it up!

    • @AlejandrosEngineeredLifestyle
      @AlejandrosEngineeredLifestyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks for the comment! Myself and many on the 790post forum would highly recommend against the replacement without tuning. First you’re just not going to get any real benefit besides noise out of it. At worst you can run even more lean as your bike is adjusting automatically and produce an enormous amount of heat that would stress many components. Considering KTM re-tunes themselves if you option the Akrapovik system I would highly recommend we all follow suit, not only for the added power but also to keep AFR and combustion temperatures lower. I have heard of many people changing the mid pipe, riding for a short period of time then convincing their dealer to install the Akra map which will unlock about 5 HP in the midrange which could be a great way to go if you don’t want to look to aftermarket sources, alternatively you could pick up a couple more horses with a number of other tuning options which I’ll be talking about soon in an upcoming video! Thanks again for the comment and welcome!!

    • @AlejandrosEngineeredLifestyle
      @AlejandrosEngineeredLifestyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it is a good point. It would really just depend on your oil distribution, CFD analysis is used to shape the pan/channels/piston underside for circulation but there are always area of retention where metal can hide in various situations. I think the screen and magnet solution is pretty inspired, have you owned any other bikes with a similar setup? Also, I saved the filter and plan to open it up to investigate further when the oil results come in.

      Yeah, I am curious to hear from someone who has done the first oil change! I bet there was a significant amount of metal therein but I'm sure they don't mention it because that kind of break-in wear is pretty typical, even of modern engines! Tight tolerances and assembly are definitely the two factors that make for these metal shavings, as time goes on it sounds like we'll see less as less as you'd expect. I am thankful for a triple oil filtration system, filter, drain plug screens, and magnets. It's pretty clear that the KTM engineers has accounted for particulate mitigation in their design. I would be far more worried it if was just the oil filter and a drain plug! It's always good to hear from you!

      lol… all manufacturers will tell you all is well. I got what I deserved for tuning the 335xi so that’s fine. I just love tinkering and monitoring the results though. This is quite the expensive hobby but the first time you tune and feel the difference you’re completely hooked.

    Any theories as to where the larger fragments are coming from? I can see the transmission producing the finer particles, the eyelash pieces seem like an odd item but I've seen them from other bikes as well.

    • @AlejandrosEngineeredLifestyle
      @AlejandrosEngineeredLifestyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ll look into it further before I speculating, perhaps include what I find in the oil analysis video. I’m with you though, I thought transmission first.

    • @duc7686
      @duc7686 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They’re usually from the transmission. I didn’t do the 600 mile oil change (dealer did that one), but I did change the oil at 3k miles and it had a lot of metal shavings. Either the dealer didn’t clean it or I still had trash or producing trash in the motor I did blow everything out with compressed air which removed all of it.
      Now my both of my rc8’s have 20k miles each. And there barely any trash if any on the magnet or screen.

      @@portaltwo Yes, you should remove all before putting the clean filter in. I even waste a little by pouring some in to flush the bottom out better. Maybe 50ml or so, and let it drain for a few minutes.

    Hi Alejandro! I have a Ktm Duke 890 and it just had its first service, after 80 miles it started to sound strange (like intermittent screeches) when I low revs, if I hit gas it sounded normal but the moment I take off the gas and low revs start again… Do you have any idea what it could be? should i take it to warranty?

    • @AlejandrosEngineeredLifestyle
      @AlejandrosEngineeredLifestyle  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey J N, sorry to miss your comment I was on vacation. Are the screeches rhythmic? I know for a fact a chain will be noisier if it’s under the wrong tension. I have videos coming explaining how to check and adjust this. Incorrect tension will not only sound bad but will also make the quick shift act improperly and may lead to premature chain wear. Thanks for the comment, keep us updated if you learn anything!

    • @AlejandrosEngineeredLifestyle
      @AlejandrosEngineeredLifestyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, so the two filter assemblies can in fact be reused if you’re careful not to crush the mesh and there is little to no metal flakes on the mesh or magnets. From what others are telling me as the engine wears in further the should be more feasible although I didn’t want to take any chances given it’s the first oil change out of warranty for me! Let me know if you’ve got any other questions. Thanks for the comment!
