Another tip. I didnt notice if it was mentioned but he puts the primer on wet and smooth you want the least amount of orange peel makes it easier to block out later.
I read in southern polyurethane tech manual body filler is supposed to go on top of the epoxy primer. The body filler is supposed to stick better to the epoxy.
You can apply most of today's fillers on top of any prepped surface so they say. I always go to bare metal because I've done it that way for 20 years without any problems and when I find a method that works I stick with it. Most of the stuff we do is full restoration and we paint both sides of a panel to prevent leaching from the back of the panel. Hope this helps!
@ Redd Myles you are correct that you can use spray paint but it can present problems (especially if your just learning to do bodywork). Most of today's paints are Urethane and most spray paints are not and sometimes it can cause lifting or adhesion problems. Thanks for the feedback. 😎
Here's another idea on primer, clean the gun between cup refills....Make sure primer, activator, reducer are well stirred... I was mixing while the instructor was spraying, that's all I did and we used almost a gallon and half on my project.....?? WHy not use rattle can for guide coat, you sand it all off ? For regular, I agree, DON'T TEST ME....LOL.... learning every damn day....
What tip size do you use on a 2k epoxy primer or a urethane dtm primer. The spray gun I got says to use a 2.0 can try it but never used a 2.0 tip yet. Only been painting for almost two years now but not every month don't have the right heater in garage to paint in winter in Michigan it's still not warm yet here now though had a little 60 degree days though and next week will be 60's but gets humid more too. I got this Damprid product to get rid of the humidity in garage but plan on putting a exhaust filter in garage this year. Gonna use a black niosh 6001 filter when paint but which is the best to use will be using epoxy again too. Messed up last time applying epoxy wasn't putting it over bare metal sanded it and the sandpaper got clogged up so won't be sanding epoxy this time unless put primer over it. Only been painting almost two years but not in the winter though don't got right heater for it in Michigan guy at auto shop said don't use a propane heater but have a kerosene one but won't use that either.
You can do that but they sometimes it has a tendency of balling up the paint on the sandpaper and it will cause it to cut invisible scratches in the primer that will make a metallic paint look funny. I have found that if rattle can paint is all you got flat colors tend not to do it as bad and keep checking your paper.
I have an antique child's wagon that I had sandblasted and epoxy primered. Do I need to sand or scuff the epoxy primer before spraying the coats of high build primer?
Did it take over a gallon of primer to do the whole car? What's your thoughts on single stage vs 2 stage, specifically is single stage thicker than 2 stage base?
Usually you can do the outside of the car with a gallon, you throw in the door jams, back of trunk and hood you should go ahead and get another gallon. If you are new to painting I would recommend using basecoat and then a clearcoat. You can work it much easier than a single stage. I'm no a 100% positive but I believe 2 stage is thicker. If you got any more questions let me know. 😎
That was Kirker 2K primer we were spraying. When we use Tamco has a fill primer we normally go 4.1.1. on the 5310. Let us know if you got any more questions.
@@SketchysGarage It's on my crew cab body on my channel I'm restoring. No color changes in primer. Just been on it 9 years in storage. So I was worried I should redo it due to the age?
Is this event you speak of in Vegas just starting or already finished? Maybe things were learned by both the promoters and racers from the last Mega Cash series to correct anything people thought might look negative. These teams have a lot of overhead just staying for a month long series, things better be fair.JMO
When I see these BIG RACES, I see big rig haulers, motor homes and very costly cars plus a crew. There must be a HUGE PURSE or contract for these people to stop their lives and do this filming. Everyone is in it to win it. $$$$$$$$$$$$$ ???????
Fastest in America roughly pays you $6000 if you're team wins that round. Then if you're team wins the whole thing it would be around 20k each team member for the finals. So there is some decent money at stake. 😎
@@SketchysGarage Do the ones on camera get a salary per day? There's a lot of people on camera, away from home. These cash payouts seem small to me considering you may be hauling around maybe up to 1/2 million in equipment. These mechanics dont work for free either.
Only car and driver get paid as far as I know. Maybe some of the top tier guys and girls get paid but I doubt it if there not making passes. I'm with you it a sounds like big money until you factor everything in. A top tier nitrous car costs between $600-$800 to make a pass. Hope this helps. 😎
On this we was using Kirker Perfect Prime. We mainly use Tamco 5310 which is an awesome primer once you use it you'll probably never use anything else. 😎
Surely this work should be done in a sealed spray booth with proper extraction ventilation! Doesn’t the USA have health and safety laws to protect employees?
You mention the gun & tip, but not the 2K primer. Its not a secret is it. I am trying to pick materials for high built at this point. Shrinkage, how it sands and kick time as some give 30-40 minutes max. I want to figure this out before Biden screws that up too.
I prefer to use a Epoxy Primer usually Shopline then I use Tamco Dtm 5310. If the car isn't going to sit in primer very long you can just use the Tamco.
"Don't test me today" love it. So true. Great job with the spray gun, nice and close!
Thank you for the refresher course brothers! It put me right back on track !
Glad that it helps.
Good work, the look on his face regarding rattle can paint haha.
Yeah that was a good one!😂😂

You can use rattle can but use a flat color, gloss colors usually clog the paper for some reason. Thanks for the input.

If it has been 3 days or longer, then yes. Rough it up with 320 and a scuff pad then use your high build primer.
Some fucken handy tips in this vid, cheers boys good job
Thanks we appreciate you watching!😎
Looking good Scotty !
When can i get mine in line for some body work ?
You can bring it up next month.
So do you guys epoxy primer the entire car regardless if it’s bare metal or not?
Yes, epoxy provides a great barrier and has excellent adhesive properties for top coats.
How long do I wait to sand epoxy primer on aluminum , no filller (mud) was used
What do you plan on top coating the epoxy with? Generally you don't sand epoxy primer.
Question on my 70 nova door jams. Poly primer ,or 2k after epoxy coating? or both?
2k will be easier to work with, but you can use poly. Hope this helps. 😎
How many coats of primer did you lay down on these panels
I can't remember exactly but we usually put a coat or 2 on the spots that have filler, then 2 more coats over the entire panel.
Did it take over a gallon of primer to do the whole car?

Is 320 grit good enough on final blocking poly before 2k restoration?
Yes😎
Is that Tamco 5310? How much did you reduce? Came out real quick. They want 4.1.2 reduction on there DTM as a sealer.
That was Kirker 2K primer we were spraying. When we use Tamco has a fill primer we normally go 4.1.1. on the 5310. Let us know if you got any more questions.
@@SketchysGarage Thanks yea they want 4.1.2 as a sealer. 2 meaning 20% or 2 parts? or is that the same thing? You used a 1.3 then as 4.1.1.?
We use a 1.8 tip when spraying primer and yes we reduce it at 10%.
Hi, I've got a Dupont Epoxy Primer Question for you. If it's been in epoxy for 9 years. Would you restrip it and start over ?
Does it have any spots where the primer has changed colors? What is it on?
@@SketchysGarage It's on my crew cab body on my channel I'm restoring. No color changes in primer. Just been on it 9 years in storage. So I was worried I should redo it due to the age?
If it was me I would, especially if you are going to really slick it out.
