That's not quite how it worked. So, on every disk there's some code which needs to be signed. You read the code, take the secret code from the safe at Sony and do the signing maths. Then you write the sign to the disk. You can verify the code using the keys in the PS3. However, you're not supposed to use the same private key every time, there's actually two keys, one is supposed to be in a safe, one is random. They didn't randomise the other secret key. So, because you have the signature for, say, a thousand games and because they were all signed by the same key, you can now reduce the number of guesses of what the key in the safe is. And because it's always the same number!? Suddenly the number of possibilities guess from a number that's larger than the number of particles in the universe to something you can brute force crack with a few computers. If they had just changed the number every time, every signed game would have pointed to a different secret number and you would never have guessed it.
Two things every Developer has to learn: 1. Everything can be hacked. It's just a matter of time. 2. Regardless how good you and your team are, the Community can do it better.

OtherOS wasn't a Linux distro, it was a feature that, as the name suggests, allowed other operating systems to be installed, the most common one being Yellow Dog Linux. The "hacking" going on under Linux wasn't for piracy, but to allow alternative Linux to access the GPU properly as Sony had promised them this, but failed to deliver. In reality Sony promised more to the OtherOS community than they were prepared to actually deliver and when Geohot decided to get involved and lend a helping hand Sony simply shit themselves because of his reputation. The shady "Oh and we're removing OtherOS so any space you've got allocated to it will become lost until you format the HDD" at the end of the patch notes for 3.21 wasn't even the worst Sony did. They basically got the police to run a drug raid on his house, including a SWAT team that broke down the door as he was sleeping. He woke up to being yelled at with guns pointed at him and after that had to watch as Sony lawyers confiscated all of his devices and hard drives. At the same time they also sued him in civil court and eventually forced him to sign an agreement where he agreed to never again try to reverse engineer Sony products. They flat out told him they're going ruin him trough spurious civil lawsuits if he didn't sign that agreement. This is what spurred people so heavily to break open the PS3 so heavily and then the PS4 after that.
In part, Sony were at first trying to promise on their claim, that it could be used as PC because they failed on their original promise of claiming that the PS2 could be used exactly like one. Edit: What I mean is, that Sony claimed that the PS2 IS a computer, however the markets outside Japan rejected to recognise it as one as there are differing critera to what consitutes a computer in Japan vs rest of the world, so they made the option of actually installing an OS system available on the PS3 at first to try and deliver their claim based on the rejection of the PS2.
I think Microsoft has done a very clever thing allowing dev mode on the Xbox one. Evidently there is a very large community that loves to see what else a console can do and this is an excellent way to allow this without having to work around security. The reverse if this happened here with the ps3. They took this ability away and the community was highly motivated to take action.
As far as I remember, the true downfall of PS3 "unhackability" began immediately after the releasing Playstation Slim without OtherOS. Before that, most of the hackers were concentrating on how to access GPU from OtherOS. So, it was a good diversion on their side; they just didn't understand it in time.
I'd argue that by removing linuxos they pissed off a bunch of very smart, determined, people who were happy up until that point to poke around. My ps3 still has otheros, is jailbroken, has an upgraded hdd loaded with 'backups' but I don't think I've turned it on since I did that, I just did it out of spite.
jail brake only get though the system but firemware do get update and you had to endless getting jailbrake for that problem... and big company had hard time dealing with fixing firmware and you expect some low skill hacker can do it for free... come on now... it work for a while and you end up the same..
FailOverflow's presentation basically revealed the *only* reason the PS3 was "unhackable" was because the OtherOS feature made attempting to hack the system uninteresting. The moment they took that away, they put a giant red target on their backs, with every console modding team in the world wanting a piece of the action. That, and they earned the ire of several of their own users for outright lying to us. 2008: "We will not remove OtherOS via a software update." 2009: *removes OtherOS via a software update." After that, you basically can't trust another word out of Sony representatives' mouths.
It was really crazy for me when they did it because they sold the ps3 on the promise of allowing non-proprietary operating systems on the console specifically Linux and then just suddenly pretended like it never happened

A backwards compatible PS3 with custom firmware is unstoppable, Play PS1,2&3 games on one system, run games from the internal hard drive and all over NAtive 1080p upscaled HDMI!
@blondbassist assuming you're talking about cecha01, the only REAL backwards compatible model, at around 98%, it's very very easy to just have it die. you're going to want to buy a 19 blade fan, replace the thermal paste under the cpu lid, meaning you need to delid, replace both areas of thermal paste, even then, if you want longevity you're probably going to have to gut a ceche01 for its superior fan and heatsink, as it isn't concave. then webman should be configured to bring the fans speed up whenever it reaches 80 Celsius just saying, those things need maintanance. @qatar bashtar you're wrong, its 98% on a cecha01 when you use the ps2 system files from psn, as they fix the issue with final fantasy 12. it's about 70-80% playable on a ceche01 but it's hit and miss, most have issues with interlacing, graphics, and lag, but it's still completely playable. also wrong about the slims, its probably around 60-70% now thanks to managunz and a few other tweaking programs, it is probably going to be hovering up there next to the ceche01 if development on it continues, making that model irrelevant soon. if only it were possible to direct boot a ps2 disc with rebug, impossible, but we can always dream.
Mine isn't backwards compatible and I play 1, 2 & 3. The emulation is pretty good. All PS1 games and most PS1 games run flawlessly and more run with .CONFIG files.

Or, if you care to USE YOUR BRAIN for a while, consider the argument here: PS3 destroyed the gamedev market, companies shut down because of it. This is why PS3 was an abysmal product. If you want to compare sales, compare it to its peers. It was outsold be both the Xbox 360 and the Wii. It had the worst game catalog on the market, and it came after the hugely successful PS2. I’m mostly surprised nobody is mentioning Rebug CFW, which is compatible with version 4.82 (latest update available). Not only that, but it requires no hardware to install since it uses a WebKit based exploit. I’ve been using it for around a year now and have yet to see anything I can’t do on it that can be done on 3.55. Rebug supports everything including MultiMan, webman, Movian and has a built in toolbox to mess with the hardware.
Every time you mentioned the word 'unhackable' I couldn't help but chuckle. The hacking scene cares more about problem/puzzle solving than playing games itself or piracy. I don't think the majors can ever satiate that puzzle solving addiction. The best they can do is hire them or help them find work that pushes their skills.
I remember following the scene very closely back when I was still in college with the first CFW pup capable of LV1 and LV2 peek and poke being complied by WuTangrza using fluke1's instructions. I think Geohot had made the first 3.55 CFW but purposefully left out LV1&2 peek and poke to avoid piracy. I remember I had FBA next and multiman of course. It was a great scene for a bit, thank you for bringing it all back!

2:02 Unrelated to Sony gaming but the first build of Sony's very first DVD player back in 1997 had tiny, easily accessible switches on its motherboard that disabled regioning and disc copy protection. Word got out on the Internet and Sony blamed "hackers" on the discovery. They almost got in deep legal trouble with DVD's governing body and immediately removed the switches from further production. Sorry, this video just reminded me of that.
@@genericrandom64 He's not talking about a PlayStation. He's talking about the Sony DVP-S7000 which yes, was Sony's first DVD player. On early units, there are two switches on the board. Learn from Microsoft, don't leave test points and JTAG points on the board after debugging pre-production. That's basically how both the original Xbox (LPC debug header) and the 360 (JTAG test points) got cracked so easily and quickly. Also, if you're going to argue that they're left there for programming during production, remember that they most definitely could program the chips beforehand. It may cost a little more, but it removes obvious security holes.
@@stevenlin4457 the only reason the Xbox one isn't hacked yet is because of Dev mode so people can run their Homebrew and emulator's without modding the system you just need $20 and your in. That being said as an owner of many consoles I also have a PS4 PRO and i can agree that backwards compatibility is sadly badly supported on PS4. But those that work, will work beautifully. Example: GTA SA It’s not Sony’s first time they mess up something. Just take a look at PS Vita, that is the best example where Sony decided to drop support for something that has a great potential. But Sony being Sony, it’s all about money.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the Optical Device Emulator addons that came out for the PS3. I personally very rarely play console games, but I always find the mod scene very interesting so I usually buy a console specifically to mod it and mess around with that kind of stuff on it. I got one of the ODEs for the PS3 and thought it was a clever little idea and I'm not really sure how such a thing can be guarded against. If the system sends out a request to read from a disc, but a little FPGA receives that, reads something from a hard drive, and then returns that as if it came from a disc... what can you do? You can still make sure the data coming back is properly signed and encrypted, sure, but that still won't protect from exact duplicates being able to be illegitimately loaded. Digital security is a fascinating problem space.
"unhackable console" *laughs in REBUG* BTW the Dualshock 3 had an excellent d-pad so 2D games work like a dream. PS3 is both cheaper than an NES/SNES classic and more useful. It's almost maddening how easy it is to mod and how many things it can do.
It certainly wasn't "unhackable" but considering how, at the time, the Wii and the X360 were hacked in a matter of months, if not weeks, it certainly was the console that gave those doing this the most work since it took 4-5 years.

@Gaming 101; I don't know UK only numbers, but overall in Europe the PS3 sold 35 mil compared to 26 mil for the Xbox 360; As a side note, in its first two days of release in UK, the PS3 sold 165,000 units and Xbox 360 sold 70,000;

We need an update on N64 emulation on PS3. Retroarch is limited to 4th generation consoles and lower. So no N64, PSX or Saturn/Dreamcast for Retroarch. I thought it was in development but looking deeper into it. It seemed it was abandoned! I looked at forum posts dating back to 2011 that the people who made Wii64 were porting their software to the PS3. They said that "we are getting things working but it's sluggish" and showed a screenshot of Super Mario 64 booting. That was the last post that they've put. I've heard that "OpenGL was the reason that they couldn't do it" or "The Cell processor was too complicated to program for" or "If they were to do a N64 emulator it would require rewriting the whole of the dynamic recompiler". I'm wondering if it'll ever happen (mainly because we haven't been updated with the progress of an N64 emulator since 2011). I do hope one day a new developer does come along and manages to find a way around the PS3 Cell Processor. Or someone will eventually port Vulkan/OpenGL API's to the PS3 (I know that is a very lengthy process that takes years to do). But I do hope it happens one day because the PS3 has a lot of potential as a emulation station. It honestly reminds me of the Xbox Emulation scene from years ago. Where there was not a single emulator that got far into development. Only very recently have there been Xbox emulators that finally play games at an acceptable standard. Or the fact that the Dolphin team went silent for 3 years but made a really good comeback. Although it looks bleak I do still believe there is hope that one day they'll be a N64/PSX/Saturn/Dreamcast heck maybe even GameCube emulators/core for the PS3 that everyone will be satisfied with.
Lassi Kinnunen The price of pc's back then where very expensive compared to what the ps3 and 360 offered.The 360 of course had a better processor for cheaper,but the console had very poor cooling unlike a ps3 if you took care of it.
in 2018 you don't even need 3.55 anymore, as long as you own a cech2005 and below you can hack it through the built internet browser on any firmware. takes minutes, it's more accessible then an rgh or jtag ever will be, unless a glitchless method that doesn't require reboot fires is created and done through bing on console. can also hack newer ps3 models 3000/4000 with a homebrew enabler which is basically just useful for piracy and ps1/ps2 classics injection. but yeah ^-^
Don't update to firmware 4.83. The psxploit has been patched. If you update while using the exploit to 4.83 you will no longer be allowed to play online in ANY multiplayer games on your console again, even if you remove the exploit on the latest firmware your ps3 has been red flagged by sony. Get a slim thats jailbroken or on 3.55. The risk is much less.
Quick Bits RetroArch sucks balls though, it’s such a pointless emulation program, it never brings anything new to the table and just packs together a bunch of emulators you probably won’t use - take it on iOS for example, it supports all the “classic” consoles that you could just download a emulator for in a second flat instead of taking forever to figure out how to get the app to function, let alone where to even download it. If it had the ability to emulate consoles other emulators didn’t then it would be worth using.

patching out linux because of hacking was just an excuse to get rid of it, they knew next to noone could really do the "hack". They patched it out as they only added it in the first place to try and get around import laws in a few countries that charged less for PC than consoles, and they thought adding linux they could pass it off as a PC, but it didn't work, so they didn't want to support it anymore and removed it via blackmail, as in lose it or lose all future games. It was divine retribution that they got hacked so quickly after, as was all their other problems, steal from customers and don't be surprised if they in turn steal from you.

About three years ago I realized my family collectively had about 3 dead ps3s. I took the oldest one and repaired it using the other ps3's parts knowing it had a firmware prior to 2009 on it. It was so easy to get multiman running. I also did the psp cfw back when I was 10 years old using the pandora battery method
My ps3 is from 2008 or 2009 and I've used it very little in my teens, because I never had many games, but boy I got multiman running there and I'm getting trophies faster than the games I'm having to download

I haven't tried Cod World At War. The word "dead" is extremely inaccurate.
Developers didn't find the PS3 difficult to code for, the reason it was called a waste of time is because multi plat games between pc and Xbox were basically just a straight port, where as PS3 had to be remade meaning that often it was given to another team (either a B team, or outsourced) who were already behind in the making of the pc/Xbox port. This lead to corner cuts and less time than needed for the game to run efficiently. If it was as simple as it being "difficult to code for", the exclusive titles would have the same issues
You should never call your products "unhackable" because that's like going straight up to a hacker and asking to hack it.

So heavily

The PS2 emulator on the Slim is actually fairly good too. I haven't any issues with the isos I've thrown at it.
Wrong. Compatibility is pretty mixed for PS2. It's about 50% or less. Just the latest wiki.
@blondbassist
assuming you're talking about cecha01, the only REAL backwards compatible model, at around 98%, it's very very easy to just have it die.
you're going to want to buy a 19 blade fan, replace the thermal paste under the cpu lid, meaning you need to delid, replace both areas of thermal paste,
even then, if you want longevity you're probably going to have to gut a ceche01 for its superior fan and heatsink, as it isn't concave.
then webman should be configured to bring the fans speed up whenever it reaches 80 Celsius just saying, those things need maintanance.
@qatar bashtar
you're wrong, its 98% on a cecha01 when you use the ps2 system files from psn, as they fix the issue with final fantasy 12.
it's about 70-80% playable on a ceche01 but it's hit and miss, most have issues with interlacing, graphics, and lag, but it's still completely playable.
also wrong about the slims, its probably around 60-70% now thanks to managunz and a few other tweaking programs, it is probably going to be hovering up there next to the ceche01 if development on it continues, making that model irrelevant soon.
if only it were possible to direct boot a ps2 disc with rebug, impossible, but we can always dream.

BTW the Dualshock 3 had an excellent d-pad so 2D games work like a dream. PS3 is both cheaper than an NES/SNES classic and more useful. It's almost maddening how easy it is to mod and how many things it can do.
Dualshock 3 d-pad excellent? I't better than the 360 one but far far away from excellent;
@@d4t6ix it's one of the best D-pads. There are still some pro fighting game players that prefer DS3 because of its D-pad
d4t6ix the DS3 is really a beautiful controller though, I use it for any of my controller needs.
Ps3 dpad was amazing
It certainly wasn't "unhackable" but considering how, at the time, the Wii and the X360 were hacked in a matter of months, if not weeks, it certainly was the console that gave those doing this the most work since it took 4-5 years.
Can Multiman pay your taxes as well?

I’m proud to say I’ve picked up and learned many many MANY different trades in my time... but man, electronics scare the shit out of me.
A B Music n More
Why it scars you ?
Bleek Cartier because they are complicated and contain a lot of technical jargon if you want to do anything really cool with them. Nothing wrong with that. It’s the same reason most people are scared of things like macroeconomics and microeconomics, that shit is my bread and butter, but electronics? Naaahhhh 😂 although I’m starting to learn it to be honest, just through exposure.
Me too I don't understand them very well.
Exactly, there is a lot to learn, and It’s just one of those things I never got my hands on or done much research. I am starting to get a little more in to it though, I’ve always been interested. I’ve always built and worked on my own guitars, and that sort of stuff is pretty simple, but I’m getting ready to build a computer. It seems pretty straightforward, but I guess we’ll find out.
But honestly, it does seems like understanding how and why it works is much more complicated than actually just making it work.
I'm actually a part of that Class Action Suit. It hasn't paid-out yet but it is finalized.
I was a rare user that used Other OS. Losing it sucked. I'd rather have Linux than the $50-65.
Can you give us some more information about the suit? What were the proceedings like?
I’ll give you a link to Linux for that 65 bucks bro! Cmon it’s a great deal.

And you are a scum bag
What did you use Other OS for? I'm struggling to understand what utility that actually had.
The PS3 was a good console. Too bad their disastrous start quite make such a dent. It still become the market leader but they paved way for Microsoft to establish themselves in the game
It's not only because of Japan; Even in Europe the Playstation 3 has been more popular than Xbox 360; In fact, i think North America is the only region where 360 actually had better sales;
d4t6ix it’s still like that now I’ve been saying this for years without The American market the Xbox would die
@@d4t6ix uk the xbox was very popular. More people had a 360 than ps3
@Gaming 101; I don't know UK only numbers, but overall in Europe the PS3 sold 35 mil compared to 26 mil for the Xbox 360;
As a side note, in its first two days of release in UK, the PS3 sold 165,000 units and Xbox 360 sold 70,000;
@KONATAonPC
So 360 was an American prodcut but they did not leverage that? Take USA out if the equation and PS3 wins by whatever. 35 to 25 xD

Basically we lost otherOS for the 10bux settlement that we got over 12 years later.
I remember buying a USB mod pen drive.
That thing modded the console in like 10 minutes. I rented all games I could and had a huge library.
I just love to watch these videos, just because you really don't know what they have to deal with when coming up with the new console.
Some people would just say "Put a better hardware together, boom there ya go."
But knowing thanks to these videos how much is going on in the background, I don't know why, but it really is fascinating to me
God its hard to believe that it has been 14yrs since the ps3 was released, where did the time go?
It's amazing how we are already emulating this hardware but they can't figure out an Xbox emulator.

It's just getting of the ground from what I can tell.
Just buy a Xbox one. It emulates the Xbox and Xbox 360
Not much demand for an Xbox emulator, no one is really working on one. I'm pretty sure this channel has talked about it since the 360 has a built in original Xbox emulator and that's running on 2005 hardware
how much pc power u need to emulate ps3.. just asking
This system was your everything station when it came out.
Pretty much
Still is at my house ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I just got a PS3 Slim for 35€. I'm so happy I'm finally going to be able to play in this masterpiece!!
The one thing I find issue with is the claim that most PS1s you find in the wild have a modchip in them. I spend a lot of time and money in retro game stores and I've never come across a modded PS1 that I didn't mod myself.

All of those systems are a part of retroarch on the PC
"Don't take away Linux from your commercial device"
Nailed it.
you could do some cool stuff with PS3 before that patch. Linux is king
Lassi Kinnunen The price of pc's back then where very expensive compared to what the ps3 and 360 offered.The 360 of course had a better processor for cheaper,but the console had very poor cooling unlike a ps3 if you took care of it.
Huge untapped potential to me brings out images of the last of us and mgs4. Insane feats on that hardware.

in 2018 you don't even need 3.55 anymore,
as long as you own a cech2005 and below you can hack it through the built internet browser on any firmware.
takes minutes, it's more accessible then an rgh or jtag ever will be, unless a glitchless method that doesn't require reboot fires is created and done through bing on console.
can also hack newer ps3 models 3000/4000 with a homebrew enabler which is basically just useful for piracy and ps1/ps2 classics injection.
but yeah ^-^

You don't even need a PS3 .... just check for emulator RPCS3.
RPCS3? Lol, not yet man.
Yes, not yet but soon.
You learn something new every day. Retro Arch started as a PS3 homebrew scene.
@@myfellowsonicfans7131 user choice is a good thing. We can all just run what consoles and games we like on our chosen emulator of choice. Everyone is happy.
most underrated channel in youtube, genuinely saying this, thanks for the video and the information.
patching out linux because of hacking was just an excuse to get rid of it, they knew next to noone could really do the "hack".
To Give Microsoft Credit there was never a plug and play hack for the 360 where you could just plug in a usb device and ahack the firmware. Hope one is found when it's discontinued.

My ps3 is from 2008 or 2009 and I've used it very little in my teens, because I never had many games, but boy I got multiman running there and I'm getting trophies faster than the games I'm having to download
its crazy to think that a roundish box brought so many good times
Didn't George Hotz make easy work of the PS3 and SONY's legal team?!
The PS3 architecture sounds like Sega Saturn 2.0: great console, but you _really_ need to know what you're doing to develop for it.
Mostly cuz of that powerfull CELL
I was one of the few people that used Linux on my PS3, until Sony took away one of the features I used to decide on the ps3 over the Xbox
I love PS3! I have a PS3 Super Slim and Sony's online server on the PS3 still works.
Dead?!?!? COD LOBBIES ARE STILL ACTIVE, call of duty 4 Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, Black ops 1, 2 and 3, including call of duty ghost and advance warfare, is crazy how those games are still extremely active. I haven't tried Cod World At War.
The word "dead" is extremely inaccurate.
I still use Final Burn which I downloaded 10 years ago on my window XP PC to play AVP arcade.
Not correct because the 360 was powerpc not x86. If you know what that means.
