Some may try and claim that the Pro is still cheaper after inflation, but that's without everything needed to use it. Throw in the disc drive and stand and it's over $1000 USD in some regions.
I gave up on Xbox One in 2016, and instead of getting an Xbox One S since it was released, I sold the original Xbox One and got a PS3 instead. It was definitely one of the best gaming investments I ever made since I didn't get to grow up with the PS3 and got to enjoy it before a lot of the game servers shut down in 2019. Still play the ps3 now and then as its one of the best consoles I've ever owned.
I agree, this is great work. I've had a channel for 10 years and I just don't get how this website works. Too many times it doesn't reward quality content makers like yourself and its depressing to see 😢
There was also the $399 PS3 that launched in 2007. That version stripped out the Emotion Engine and cut the hard drive down to 40GB (or upgraded it, it you're comparing it with the 499 20GB version). There was a version of the console that played PS2 games via emulation but eventually that was done away with in favor of HD remakes built specifically for the console. As for finishing strong, the PS3 really did. Keep in mind that The Last of Us launched in 2013, the same year that the PS4 came out. Whereas the 360 didn't really have much. Microsoft was more focused on the Kinect (which sold like crazy when it came out in 2010) and the upcoming XboxOne. If you look up the games Microsoft published for 360, you'll see a dearth of 360 titles that weren't Xbox Live or Kinect focused. Gears of War Judgement and Halo 4 were the big titles for 2013 and 2012. And, well, the fans didn't really care for either. Judgement was a sidestory and Halo 4 was the first done by 343, so very controversial with the changes they made (I honestly think the devs should have just made it a Xbox One title, taken a bit more time to put some TLC on that title because the idea of a game focusing on Chief's relationship with Cortana was a good idea. Just the main bad guy sucked, so the story and gameplay kind of felt like they were pulling in 2 different directions)
The PS3 beat the 360 on software sales by a crazy amount, it sold even more software units than the wii, so technically PlayStation has never really lost a generation
If I’m being honest this was the last true console generation where each console was different from a hardware and software standpoint and perspective. Today you can’t really tell which console is which unless you see controller inputs or it’s an exclusive for said platform. I remember this gen and I remember actually being stuck on which one to choose from and honestly I ended up having both but PS3 just did it for me and that’s when gaming was just at its best in my opinion.
Humble. This is the Sony I miss. I too was a Wii & 360 gamer because of Sony's arrogant approach at the start of the PS3's life but Sony got their act together and got me around the slim's release & price cut followed with consistent 1st party game output. I was done with the 360 somewhere around the release of Borderlands 2's dlc's and the only game I played on Wii late in its life was Monster Hunter 3 Tri. It was around this time that I started playing older PS3 exclusives that I missed such as the Resistance games, Killzone, Infamous, God of War, The Sly Cooper collection, Heavy Rain, and a few others games whose names have escaped me at the moment. I sadly sold my PS3 to help pay bills 2 months before The Last of Us was released. For a time that hurt me deep. (Until I bought a PS4 in late 2015 and bought TLoU: R on it in early 2016.) In comparison, I sold my 360 a couple of months before I sold the PS3 and despite having purchased a lot more games both physically and digitally on 360, I had no regrets selling that system. I kept the Wii; I didn't want to lose my Virtual Console game purchases.
I think I remember around that time there was a conspiracy theory that despite them seemingly doing better on the surface, Sony put in Blu Ray tech into the PS3 as a Hail Mary attempt to defeat the competing movie format, HD DVD. There was also another one that suggested that Toshiba was bribed by Sony to drop out of the format war and they took their deal. Those were just two random things I remembered way back when that were more he said she said type of things and I don’t think really have much validity to them but was still fun to go down memory lane.
09:40 The reason why the sales drop so much after launch is because Sony was having a hard time keeping up with demand. As soon the stores get any in, they sold out within minutes. It was like that for months.
I didn’t get mine til February 08 cause of it. Got the 80 GB motorstorm bundle but man it was a bitch to get. Had to take a day off work to catch one at my local game store in the am when they got the shipments in. When I tell you there was a line that’s what I mean. I spent 740 😂 but it was well worth it.
Lol, USA people love their Xboxes so much they're blinded with their rose tinted glasses. But we in the rest of the world always knew PS3 was the actual winning console.
More of this 'people only bought a Wii for Wii Sports and played nothing else' myth. The Wii's game-to-console attach rate was one of the highest of any Nintendo system and on par with the attach rates of every Playstation generation. The average Wii owner had 9 games, about the same as the PS3 and much more than the 360. By 2011 there were fewer games coming out for the Wii and sales were dropping, but the actual data destroys the myths of Wiis not being played and collecting dust the moment people had enough of Wii Sports.
Wii Sports made such a good impression on me that I had gone and bought Wii Party. That game, Wii Party, has gone on to be come one of my favourite games on the system. And that's all because of the Mii characters.
Kind of a similar story to how the SNES was ultimately able to beat the Genesis by the end of its own lifespan, before both Nintendo and Sega ironically faced Sony’s PS1 and PS2 and lost in the market.
Still the best sony console to date. PS1 PS2 PS3 generation games. Music CD player, Movie DVD player, Movie Blu Ray player the console really was a multi media system.
Funny watching this after Sony revealed the PS5 Pro. Funny to see how history kinda repeats itself, but you can also say that Sony is not the same Sony that it was back in 2006. The launch of the PS5 Pro can certainly be the same as the launch of the PS3 if Nintendo launches their next console much cheaper than PS5 Pro. Which I would expect them to do. Probably no more than $400 for Nintendo’s next console. That would put them at a $300 advantage over the Pro and a $100 advantage over the standard PS5 Slim Digital.
Also if Nintendo comes in with a significant upgrade to the Switch 2, coupled with a more pro-consumer response following the fallout from their legal battles with Palworld devs, I fully expect Sony to cave to the negative press once it starts affecting their bottom line and sales numbers. If Nintendo does it right with their next console, I can see Sony panicking and caving to the negative reception of the PS5 Pro by cutting prices significantly on at least the PS5 Pro and disc drives, pushing bundle sales where you get a console and an included game with the baseline PS5 slim models at the current price point, and caving to consumer complaints by selling any new console with an included stand at no additional charge just to try and not look like they're repeating the mistakes of the PS3. It just seems like anytime Sony starts getting complacent they start making questionable business decisions and forgetting who their customers are. It's why I hope that Microsoft doesn't exit the console market even though I personally never buy from them because Sony honestly needs the pressure and competition from Nintendo and Microsoft constantly breathing down their necks to protect them from themselves.
Besides PC I guess. Nintendo isn't directly competing but they have their best selling home console with the Switch/2nd best selling handheld and this time around they actual game sales are good too. If the 10th generation Nintendo console is about as powerful as a Playstation 4/Xbox One then they're actually on track to basically start competing with Sony again like in the 5th and 6th generation or with the PSP and Vita vs the DS and 3DS.
Randomyly found your video via the algorithm, but was surprised to see you're not that popular, bc this was well-made! I'd love for you to break down Microsoft being little bitches about buying Bethesda and Activision which takes non-exclusive to exclusive, which is a huge gaming no-no

PS3 killed the bespoke, exotic console architecture. The Cell chip, Blu-Ray drive and stuffing a whole PS2 into it drove up the price, and it's been said that sourcing the Blu-Ray drives themselves directly contributed to the system's delays in reaching the market. But forcing programmers to jump through the hoops required to deliver respectable results wrangling the Cell BE and its SPU cores was what hurt the system the most during its early years. It's no wonder consoles are basically all custom x86-64 PCs or (in Nintendo's case) Android-compatible ARM devices now.
@@spiral1407 That's a valid perspective. But hey, Nintendo got three generations of use out of that architecture, for better or worse.
