Prologue: I prepared heavily for this. Many hours in the jam room practicing, coming up with a plan, and spent hours studying the submission videos of the drummers who applied. I did my best to find out who was chosen. And most of the drummers who were chosen were good friends of mine, and very little to no tech death players were there. But I knew there would be a rogue.. A death metal drummer in a million bands who had crazy ass chops who would out do me in kick speed, blasts, fills, you name it. And I was right. I got to the building 1 day before the shoot for a quick dress rehearsal. And there he was.. Nick Rogers, the rogue. We exchanged plesentries and then I said it! I said: "You're the rogue. I knew you would come." And I asked him to whip out his phone and show me his billion bands and his insane chops. And he did! He showed it all to me, all the insane pedal tricks and fills that I couldnt hope to play like he could. The staff approached us and told us we would face eachother in the first round. The pieces were falling into place.. Little did Nick know, this is exactly what I wanted. This wasnt just a friendly competition of who plays metal drums better. To me, this was death metal, vs thrash metal. And I knew I was facing true death. So I did the only thing I could. I threw a fresh skin on my snare, tightened the shit out of it, followed my heart and hit as hard as I could. The judges made their call but I know the true power of Nick Rogers. And Im lucky I survived his wrath.
Hell yes. I am especially happy about this. We all played differently and its great that specifically the kick drum sounds different for every player in the show. You can actually hear how hard we are hitting! They gave us the option to use triggers but no one asked for them.
This was actually a pretty rad idea to have drummers instead of guitar players this time around. Also, I'd like to commend you on the audio quality. I don't know if I'm tripping or not, but it seems like it has gone up significantly since the last season.
The first video that I watched of this series had a guitar backing track. Which made for a stellar performance from the drummers. I feel that if these drummers had backing tracks, that we would have seen an even more vivid and spectacular performance from both.
Holy Shit, you got Chris as the guest judge? That guy has drummed on many of what I consider to be my favourite metal albums in the last decade. Megadeth, Protest the Hero, Lamb of God... just... wow.
As a drummer I was hoping they’d get a short bass and guitar track to play along to. Seeing how they apply these chops in a creative manner to a song would have been a lot of fun. That’s what drummers are for after all.
This is like past editions, first is instrument solo, then they give them a backing track to work on songwriting and then it's a face off between the two last musicians
Why the hell would you thumbs down this. Baritone Guitarist here, this is killer show idea Love watching talented drummers, thumbs up 👍🏽. Great talent from both drummers
Really cool idea to do it with drummers! I wish we will have as well some drummers that are bit experimental and go out of the fast, blast, double basse part and try to play some intricate groove parts. But I love the concept, and this first episode was already very enjoyable and we had two very different rounds. Stoked for the upcoming episodes!
I was waiting for this since teaser trailer. Happy to have this on You Tube, so much great content on your channel. Great to see that there will be musical tracks to drum on for the semi-finals.
If I could offer my own thoughts as a fellow drummer: Round #1: Nick: Good, technical stuff that sounded like it could fit well on any extreme metal record. Solid blast beats, and some excellent footwork. The problem I had was that there was too much of a reliance on said blast beats. Also, I have to agree with Sam. I wish that he'd done something a little more creative than the stereotypical death metal stuff. But, overall, pretty nice work. 8/10. Andrew: I liked how he incorporated the thrashier part of his sound as he spoke about in his interview, and I could definitely see the Pete Webber influence there. His footwork, while not as good as Nick's, was still solid, and, as Chris Adler said, he had some very good snare rolls. My issue with him was that he was just a little sloppy moving from part to part, and he didn't really do anything aside from the thrash stuff, even though he said he was gonna use some prog material. He did well, just not quite as well as Nick. 7/10. Round #2: Andrew: It was definitely better than the first round. I like how he basically had one giant pattern of eighth notes on the kick drum, and then deviated from that with a cool floor tom pattern. That's more of the prog stuff he was missing in round 1. On the downside, his footwork was still a little sloppy and after a while, the eighth note pattern did start to become stale. But, overall, he did a nice job of taking what the judges told him and revamping his solo for round 2. 8/10. Nick: This was also better than the first round. I like how he dropped the reliance on nothing but blast beats in favor of more standard metallic drumming. As with Andrew, he also did a great job in taking the constructive criticism of the judges and applying it to his second solo. He did some more experimental stuff that I enjoyed, and it was fun to watch. I guess my only note would be that the ending petered out just a little bit, and it seems like he's trying too hard to move from piece to piece as quickly as possible. But, overall, it was definitely better than the first pass. I'd give it a 9/10. So, out of 20, Nick got a 17, and Andrew got a 15. For me, Nick should have won this. He had the better footwork, was a little more cool behind the kit, and just appeared like he'd thought things out a little more than Andrew did. He also stuck close to his style more, while throwing in some creative monkey wrenches to mess with things a little. But, oh, well. To each their own, and two of the judges had a different opinion. Good luck to Andrew in the next round!
Thanks for the insight! I kind of wish they would have the judges articulate their thoughts to this degree. And I agree that Nick should’ve won this round
This format feels much nicer to watch (and hear) ! Also unlike some of the contestants of the other 2 seasons, these guys are actually really proficient !
I am a guitar player, and I've been playing guitar for 10 years. Right now I'm working on my death metal band - so, naturally you can guess which style is more appealing to me. With that said, I just reaaaaaaally want to put this on the record: THIS DRUM COMPETITION IS SOOOOO MUCH BETTER THAN THE GUITAR ONE.... Damn. Great job, golks! And, Chris, you're the boss!
that was sick! Nick definitely has the extreme sound down, but it all felt too similar and didn't work as good when he tried something different. i feel like Andrew has a bit more range, and was overall more entertaining to watch and listen to, or maybe i'm just biased because i do enjoy me some thrashy drumming.
Only a few minutes into this video but the first thing I thought of when the first guy started was Justice/black album era Ulrich with the way he was playing that snare
Totally awesome and found myself agreeing with the judges comments all the way through. That was a really tough call, glad I didn't have to make it, they really were different styles of drummers and both good at what they did.
Despite being a Patreon supporter I've always ignored Shredders of Metal because i just don't give a fuck about guitar pyrotechnics. So I finally check it out and you're doing drums! So much fun. Thanks.
Amazing. Both were just great! And this is round 1?! The previous seasons you could tell that someone was a cut above but at least this episode was a tight a competition as I've seen. Can't wait for the next round!
I'm definitely more into the style of playing that Andrew does; the super-fast playing and blast beat stuff that Nick seems most comfortable with is not my cup of tea. However, Nick's kick ability in round 2 really stood out to me, but in the end I liked Andrew's more simply because he's good at it and it's what I prefer to hear.
Nicks style was more death metal than Andrews style but still incredible.. Andrews snare tone was tighter sounding and his toms had a cleaner attack than nicks and Andrews technique was a little better than nicks but overall both drummers were sick af.. it would be a very hard job picking out the best metal drummer for this show because every drummer I've seen so far has been amazing.. Best show ever guys!! Keep it up.. Cheers from Cincinnati Ohio USA..
Shit great drummers. Both guys. Really really fucking good. Kits sound amazing too. Excellent tracking/mixing job. Just superb all around. It is Very difficult to record live drums that sound this good.
I thought that Nick was the more dynamic drummer. The thrash drumming by Andrew was more yawnish in comparison to Nick, but I thought that Andrew held a stronger presence during the second round. Overall, both are really good, but I think that Andrew's ability to hold more of a groove with stage presence won two of the judges over. Nick should have really slowed things down into a groove for a few seconds. I'd love to play with either drummer. This was more fun that the guitar competition, and the talent seems better.
Seems a lot of people missed it, and maybe it was subconscious, but Nick definitely started playing parts from BTBAMs Obfuscation during the second solo. He would’ve gotten my vote otherwise. Both amazing players though.
Thanks Stuart :) I made a point to have 2 very different grooves for this round. I came up with the second beat while driving. Just hit me and I spent hours in the jam room fine tuning it. It didnt come out perfectly so i will be releasing a re-do on my youtube channel in the coming weeks.

You killed it man, lots of personality in your playing!
Dude, you both destroyed! I'm so happy I'm not qualified to judge any of these!
You sounded great, dude! Great job!
You killed it Andrew!
You sounded killer. Tight af
As a drummer, this is exactly the contest i have always wanted to see !
Drums front and center!
As I wish they were!
Everybody wants to see drummer playing all the time, even if they play the flute
I'm stoked on the mix of this. Hearing these kicks sounds like drums and not just crazy triggered was super refreshing.
This, holy shit, I thought this was going to be the mechanical keyboard edition, glad I'm wrong
No robots allowed.
Hell yes. I am especially happy about this. We all played differently and its great that specifically the kick drum sounds different for every player in the show. You can actually hear how hard we are hitting! They gave us the option to use triggers but no one asked for them.

Nicks second round had parts lifted from BTBAM's "Obfuscation", I smiled so big!
Glad someone else noticed :P not original but still played it awesomely!
I was scanning the comments for this haha, noticed it right away.
Oh wow how did you guys even catch that ?! I only found it because you pointed it out. Never would have guessed that it was lifted from Obfuscation
Glad i noticed that too
Sounded just like it! Caught it immediately too!
This was actually a pretty rad idea to have drummers instead of guitar players this time around. Also, I'd like to commend you on the audio quality. I don't know if I'm tripping or not, but it seems like it has gone up significantly since the last season.
Thanks for noticing!!!
It has got better
The quality of drumming is so much higher than the quality of the guitar players lmao.
Much better!
Guitar is harder to play at high levels, my 2 cents 🙄
Too true, the talent pool for guitar is a lot more diverse, drummers it’s usually you’re a mad lad or a beginner
This is what i have been waiting for clash of drummer 🤘
Can't get enough of high level metal musicians.
Audio quality is really good in this one. Nothing is getting cut out and the drums sound great.
The first video that I watched of this series had a guitar backing track. Which made for a stellar performance from the drummers.
I feel that if these drummers had backing tracks, that we would have seen an even more vivid and spectacular performance from both.
Keep watching! In a later episode in the season, I play to a great thrash backtrack :)
So happy for a drum addition. I really want to see a bass season next!
Holy Shit, you got Chris as the guest judge? That guy has drummed on many of what I consider to be my favourite metal albums in the last decade. Megadeth, Protest the Hero, Lamb of God... just... wow.
He is a legend
He is better then most know

There will be backing tracks in the semi finals!
Great idea but when your judging you need to hear drums only

On point, sir!
Good stuff, but thrown off by Nicks second score, considering you said he did better, yet stayed at 8/10. Lol but solid reviews
Um...I gave Nick a 9 for his second round solo.
That was awesome, as a drummer I really enjoy seeing other drummers do their thing. Andrew has a really great style, can't wait to see more!
