    Sorry for your loss. Big Ned looked like a great pup. I resemble that lawn and now you have fixed my quandary. Tenacity, over seed and fertilizer 13-5-8 and some top dressing. It was getting nice here in Chicago and I started to work on the lawn and then it started to rain and now snow. Corona or weather it never ends...

    Good to see you made it through winter! Enjoyed the video. I have never used tenacity but plan to try it this year to control creeping bentgrass in my newly seeded lawn. The stuff I use as a pre emerg is a granular made by Anderson. The only thing it seems to prevent is crabgrass and perhaps dandelions. Doesn’t seem to touch clover or oxalis. Thank you.

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      awesome! been studying up for you guys without our sprays here. if you have some leaf compost that's broken down start getting it in the lawn. great carbon source.

    • @neildonachie
      @neildonachie 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have thrown some seed down to help fill in the gaps and raked in a little top soil. Hoping the temps pick up a bit, we’ve had some sunshine but stayed quite cool. Just hoping I haven’t over seeded too early. Would the seed go to waste if the conditions weren’t right?

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The seed only takes about a 30% die back when temps dip below zero if they've started the germination process. however when it's how and the soil dries out during the germination process that's when the worrying starts.

    Great video with realistic advice. Most people have issues in their lawn and need it taken care of quicker than a 5 year plan. It is nice to hear a proponent of spring seeding and aggressive weed control. Many other popular youtubers have plans that work to maintain an already nice lawn, but their plans would take years on a poor lawn. Sorry to hear about Ned.

    IM READY Ginja. Did the short mow and it's the greenest on the block so far. I attribute the early greenup to the early October aeration and fertilizer as well as the humates I started using last year. Threw down some IFA step 1 about a week ago.
    Now I want to do 2 things and I was hoping you could help me with the timing. 1) Power rake. 2) Overseed.
    Thanx Ginja, really glad to see you back in action. Stay sassy my friend.

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice Eric! Glad to hear you're out there slaying that lawn! Power raking really sucks but it's one of the fastest ways to turn a lawn around! Just waiting on the weather to get out and run the sun joe!

    • @ericalexander594
      @ericalexander594 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pestandlawnginja what should be my timing for the overseed? It's a good looking lawn (no bare spots), but there is a good amount of debris underneath. I think the seed is needed to thicken it up.
      My lawn is where it is now because of following your videos and copying your moves. Keep it up man.

    Put tenacity down last July fir nutsedge and other. It's a killer.... hehe.
    About to mow fir 1st time, I guess second, I did mow/ bag leaves and trash march 1st.
    March 1st I put seed down. It was a warm week here in kc. I figured the March rain would take over, it did, I finally see results!
    I have two areas, low spots which one is under a tree to make it worse, I'm getting grass going again. Will add lots a dirt come fall. And repeat lol.
    But I plan to cut tonight, bag and wait 2 days than put some tenacity down. Wish I had a larger back pack sprayer!!!

    @Pest and Lawn Ginga I appreciate all the videos and product knowledge. I have been using the tenacity and speedzone and love it. Not sure if you remember but I am in PA, bucks county on a few acres. Bought the farm and been trying to attack the yard little by little. I need some advice as I have yet to dethatch or aerate or overseed. I think the lawn needs both. It’s is April 10 and about 5 days ago I put down a pre emergent 18 -00-04. I also walked the propert last 2 days and hit all the broadleafs, buttercups, onion grass etc with trancity and speedzone. I don’t know next steps because I assume since I put down preemergent I should
    Not aerate and overseed? Or can I have a certain amount of time? Thanks for the help

    Welcome back Ginja, I have a long winded question about soil testing so grab a cup of coffee and please read on. Late fall of 2018 I sprayed my unwanted bent grass in up state NY with tenacity. Spring of 2019 I tested my soil with a newly purchased ph meter and the results were between 5.8 and 6.3. My soil test came back with a ph of 7.3. Unsure which result was correct, I sent a soil sample to my local co-op and the result for the ph was 7.5. Due to the (believed) high ph, fifty pounds of sulfur was applied to about 5000 sqft after power raking and aerating. Then over seeded with Barenbrug kbg and fertilized using starter fertilizer in order to keep the weeds down on the bare spots over the summer. Late summer of 2019 did the same over seeding process and used tenacity as a pre-m. This spring 20 core soil samples were taken, mixed, split and sent to two facilities. One sample was sent to Spectrum Analytic and the other to Clemson. The results showed that the ph is about 7.6 on both but the phosphorus is low on one test and excessive on the other. Now for the question, how does one make soil corrections when one result is saying to raise and the other is saying to lower an element or in the first situation, the ph? Looking forward to your insight, Bill

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bill! Here's my 2c. I'm not worried about fixing the soil. Only thing that really worries me is when the ph is super low and when the sodium is very high. Both are horrible to try to grow grass in.
      You're ph is very similar to mine. It's a fantastic growing medium for grass. I would bet the 7.2 results and 7.6 results are the most correct. Very reputable testing centers. Your soil contents can vary throughout the entire yard. The sulfur is meant to ph down. elemental sulfur is meant to push more of a long term fix than any ammonium sulfate nitrogen based fertilizer will provide. Fertilizers temporarily push ph for 3 to 5 days. gone in a flash. The plants create there own environment around the root bases and protect themselves . People have been growing plants in the middle of a desert for centuries. Mother nature is fascinating. I wouldn't worry about "fixing" the soil. You have a great ph to deal with. Just means you can push more nitrogen with sulfur in it. You'll also want to use soil conditioners made with calcium that are derived from nitrates or sulfur like gypsum. avoid lime.

    • @shawnotool5364
      @shawnotool5364 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pestandlawnginja I only ask because my total renovation TTTF was seeded last September. We got a lot of rain and not enough sun. Despite those conditions, it came up nicely and was mowed 4 or 5 times. The seed only had 13% Valkyrie LS in it. From my research, I believe it takes a certain level maturity for these rhizomes to develop, I just don't know what that level is. That leaves me on the fence about pre emergents. Thank you for your reply earlier, but I'm still a little bit confused about this grass type and what it needs.
      Sorry for being so long winded and a pest, but I think you might be the most knowledgeable youtubers on the subject of RTF

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      To answer your question pre emergents do cause rooting issues. tall fescue has some of the deepest roots out of the cool season grasses. they can travel 12" to 20" deep. Try and find some rtf tall fescue by barenbrug. its a fantastic seed and I've had great germination success with it.

The more complicated you make it by providing so much information, the quicker we switch off. Pest and Lawn Ginja easy really. You say you have a few things but then you never outline what those are, but you deep dive into every step. Tell us the steps first, give a brief overview of what each does (in one sentence), then deep dive into each one by one. Basically you start simple, the extrapolate and at the end recap in the a simple format. I saw another GREAT video you did on crabgrass, but you listed so many chemicals I gave up. If I’m starting for the first time I’ll feel comfortable mixing 1 or 2 chems not 8. Also lastly when you list a chem and the properties are listed on screen please list the name of the chem in a different font. You say the name but it registers more when we read it because we will recall that spelling when searching on Amazon.
      Great presentation, great video just too much info for me to feel comfortable replicating.

    Glad you’re back!! So... I’ve been looking into pro peat fertilizer. I see there are different ones with a different analysis. I have a soil sample pending results right now, in MN what would you recommend to use AFTER the first app in spring to maintain...? Would it just depend on my soil sample? And how often should it be applied ? Monthly? Or just spring , early summer, fall, and “winterizer “?

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      my schedule will be a tad different than what some of you need. I have some rooting issues so I'll go 1 heavy app (3/4lbs N) off the gun because bluegrass needs a push out the gate and the product pushes for 90 days. then I'll transition next month to the 13-5-8 due to the phosphorus and added potassium. I'll put it down at .25lbs N every 4 weeks throughout the summer and early fall. Then late fall I'll be using a propeat product lower in N and higher in K. That product will be with yardmastery later in the season. helps prep for overseeding as well. I'll be running everything I do under a playlist series This is my lawn 2020. If you want to copy me feel free. The rates we apply there will only be slight variants and those variables will primarily be necessity of added calcium, weather that be lime, gypsum or calcium nitrates.

  • @jdflyguy14

    I just fertilized my cold weather grass prior to seeing this video. I plan on overseeding because there are a lot of bare, thin spots, but used a high nitrogen (18,0,1). Can I add a low nitrogen, high phosphorus mix as well and still be ok to overseed?

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll have to wait 2 to 3 weeks as the nitrogen burns off before you add a starter fertilizer. If you aerate then seed you might be ok.

Would you suggest I start with weed control? Debris removal(power rake and scarify)? Aerate, level and overseed? • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dan! The answer to your question all depends on the soil temperatures. you have a small window to apply the seed. the window is ground temps from 55 degrees to 65 degrees ground temps. if you're still around 55 to 60 then you could chance doing two applications, one of speedzone mixed with tenacity and one 14 days later as you put the seed down. if you're already 60 degrees you need to decide to seed now or attack the weeds and seed in the fall time.

    Mentioned them in a video 6 months ago) my question is what should I use to remove weeds and build a better lawn.

      Sounds like you're in a transition zone. My choices will depend on if you want to keep the zoysia and bermuda. If you do look into t-zone Southern and prodiamine for your pre emergent. If you dont want the zoysia then I would do speedzone and tenacity

      He suddenly passed away the first week of November. He was old and the vet wasn't sure what happened. I was lucky to have found him 4 years earlier in the local shelter. he was in pretty bad shape. fixed him up and he was the best dog i've ever had. He lived a good last 4 years.

    Ginja tips and tricks are the best! The Quinclorac on crab grass was jaw dropping! I can’t wait to try your next tips. I have cool season tall fescue from Jonathan Greene.

    Hey Ginja rookie from Pennsylvania. My lawn is a mess, I believe I need to use all 3 steps ( over seed, tenacity, fertilizer) could use some guidance on when to apply each step . Like do I apply all at once on top of each other or do I space it out! Love the video’s and your passion. Just bought my thermometer tonight ! “ I Am Ready” Thanks

      That's awesome hugh. You can do them in any order and all on the same day. I prefer to seed, fertilize then spray tenacity last

    Hello Mr. Ginga, I’ve followed your site & directions since last summer. I need your guidance. I’m in lower New York (Long Island) and Spring is coming. I’m most interested in eliminating crabgrass. I applied Tenacity in the fall & need to know what to apply now and what/when is next. I’m watching the ground temperatures & haven’t seen anything above the mid-forties. I know that you’re busy but please some time to give me some guidance.

    Thanks Lawn Ginja. I over seeded last fall and we wound up having a wet winter and it looks like germination rates were low or too much moisture? I have tenancity and speed zone and grabbing some 13-5-8 from the store. Should I apply tenacity and herbicide to stop germination, then over seed and after 14 days hit it with tenacity? A little counsel would be much appreciated. Cant wait to calibrate the battery operated sprayer.

      Kristine! Glad to hear you're slaying that lawn. You're on the right track. depending on what seed you decided to go with you may need to be a bit patient. some species of bluegrass seed can be stubborn and are slow to surface. If you just want a Mulligan then you're plan is spot on. Either way if you stick to your above mentioned plan you can't lose. just remember its just grass. don't stress. You're out doing the work, it will come with time. it's worst than watching paint dry during this process.

    Thanks for all the great videos Ginja. Im looking to follow your advice and apply tenacity and speedzone as a post emergent. Then follow up with tenacity two weeks after and over seed with black beauty ultra. I live in wisconsin and temps have been fairly cold recently, 40s, but soil thermometer says 50 degrees. Just wondering if you could offer any advice on when to make the first post emergent application. Im eager to put it down as i see some weeds starting to pop up but i dont want to put it down too early. Thanks bud.
