  • You might think it's difficult to fix an ugly lawn but in this complete step by step guide to overseeding your lawn, I'll show you it can be done much faster than you think! Overseeding is the process of adding new grass seed to your existing lawn and the transformation can done quickly and easily with simple lawn renovation. In the past I have done this with perennial ryegrass but it can be done with any cool season grass such as fescue or bluegrass as well. Pair this with dethatching and core aeration and you will fix that ugly lawn in no time!

I just saw this pop up on you tube and had to watch. I have been landscaping for 16 years and you explained the process very well. The only thing i would add is that if you have soil that is on the sandier side to try a tall fescue. the reason being, as was mentioned in the video, it does have a higher drought tolerance. Once it is established it does much better with less water. Great video, and your lawn looks wonderful. well done

Ryan, thanks- that was very helpful. Planted seed for the first time- used Scott’s EZ seed. It’s coming up nicely and it’s been four days. Question for you: it seems even though I seeded evenly, I may not have used as much seed (lawn is about 150 sq ft and I used one bag in order not to overseed). Should I wait it out or throw some more seed while the grass is still coming and I’m in my first week? I am watering twice a day and it’s a mix of sun and shade with tree cover. Also, If the suggestion is to seed more, use EZ again or get normal seed? Thank you- much appreciated.

I used this video to overseed my lawn this fall. I started early October and it worked great. I followed everything step by step except I didnt use a core aerator. I bought a cheap spike wheel pusher on amazon. The spikes from the push aerator create small holes in your lawn up to 2 inches. It worked great and I have tons of new grass even now still in the winter. This process works! I finally have a lawn better than my obsessed neighbor!

So I'm gonna be seeding overtop crabgrass that I've worked on with tenacity the last month. There's still plenty of spots that it's still growing, but would a top dress (peat moss, soil, etc) be necessary? My lawn guy that'll be helping me is bringing top soil for the bare spots, but wasn't sure if it was necessary over the entire lawn.
Love following your videos! Thank you for all the help you provide.

It seems too good to be true based on the thumbnail, but I'm a new homeowner who installed my own sod in the fall and this summer I dethatched it after the hard winter, applied some fertilizer and water, and got on a good mowing schedule, and my grass is a dense, healthy, deep emerald carpet of Kentucky Bluegrass that looks like something you'd see on HGTV. I owe it all to Ryan and his videos; you really can do this yourself and it is incredibly rewarding.

I just did most of the steps in the last few days. I did not thatch the lawn. I did core aeration and overseeded the lawn yesterday. I’m glad I watched this video because I wasn’t sure about fertilizer. I’ll let you know how my lawn turns out.
