I bought one of those brand new at Past and Present Bike Works back in the day it was a nightmare with issues but I still loved it. Maintenance was easy, check the fluids, yes three puddles of each. Traded it in on a 1987 Softail custom that was stolen from work and the thief killed himself out running the police after he hit a pop machine at 70 miles an hour by trying to cut through the SOHIO gas station lot, after hitting the coke machine he was partially strained through a chain link fence. Good times
Just saw this video..a year late....feed back, I like your attitude and videos ....83 sturgis...I didn't think they made past 82...the lowrider got the belts...no more sturgis... I bought an 81 when I was 19.( new)..and a 91 when I was 40..(used).they are almost original in looks and stock.( unlike the bike in this video)..the 81 sturgis was the original blacked out belt drive HD..the 91 was to introduce the dyna frame, which brought the look back to traditional from the fxr frame....16 bikes in my collection...obviously the 81 is my soulmate. Ride true for yourself.
Riding to a Show in February and NO SNOW... you are living right my Brother, you are living right! Even your "it's not a video", videos are good!!! Thank you for all you do, when you do, what you do!!! Willie
BELL SQUAD! It’s nice to see the happenings at a dealership, miss working in one for sure. It’s even better to see that your putting out great content to support the dealerships that work hard everyday to be awesome. Keep up the great content and keep changing it up. Car shows, dealer happenings, just general life stuff, it’s all good!
Yeah, the wife and I had to deal with the rain all through the Smokies this week too, but we made a side trip to your dealership Friday. It wasn't raining IN your shop, so it was one of the drier moments of our trip. It was fun meeting you and your friends.
Thank you for responding, I understand, keep those videos coming oh and by the way the hourly rate up here in New York and New Jersey is; $105.00 per hour! Oil changes can run you some serious money and I don’t know how much your first 1000 mile check up will cost! But two new tires with insulation is about $750.00. Crazy !!!
I love the 83. That's the body style I fell in love with when my dad would take me by the Harley shop when I was a kid. Dang John, I had all but forgotten about that. I almost got choked up. I liked it the video
The first Sturgis I saw and if you want to see an all original one go to Sturgis, South Dakota they have on sitting in the front of the store 'NOT FOR SALE" it is pretty cool though.
Hey John I have a 83 FXSB duel belt drive. My buddy from the Marines who I served with has a 1981 Sturgis. I beleave in 83 the Sturgis became the Lowrider.
The ones I have suck. They’re from amazon. Mine is a 96, though. Depending on your year low rider, if HD makes them, they’re by far the best. Mine leak like hell.
This is the second time I see this vlog off the tail end of a Willie G video talking about how he came up with the Sturgis and the fact that it boasted a forward and final drive belt. Would be awsome in the future if you could do videos on vintage bikes Harley or not.
I was surprised that I didn't see one in the HD Museum when I visited in 2015 though Willie G had one in his collection next door. A good one is as scarce as hens teeth in Australia, plenty got knocked off.
I still have mine. Had it since high school back in 1973. It's chopped on a hard tail frame,but... once my son got out of the Marine Corp the question came,pops..can I have that bike 🤦😵grrrr oh..ok son. His mom was brought to the hospital on it when he was born in 1990. So now I'm stuck with my 94 Electra glide classic that I've had since new, still looks new, even has the style of how a Harley should look, unlike these new ones
It was the bike that almost put HD out of business, we used to call them 200 mile bikes, after 200 miles you had to work on them again. Funny thing is because of that bike I started riding Sportsters, Still do to this day 30 plus years later
John, keep making videos like this one! Being from Hawaii, I don't get the chance to see some of these types of car shows. I also like the posts you do of riding, ever consider a silent video that just has the sound of your engine? I would definitely let that run for a couple of hours! 😉
You can. For short rides it’s ok, but a bigger bike is better. For long rides, you’ll likely be sad with your purchase. If you plan to ride 2 up a lot, and can afford a bigger bike, I’d go bigger!
Man another great video, it's nice to see a different aspect as a Harley rider. Can't wait to see a few more car and bike shows before summer is over. Ride-On
John maxwell another entertaining video thank you for all the hard work you do and am glad you got a few hours away with a friend people need that now and again . You really are doing a great job
I have a Shovelhead Sturgis :-) (FXDB). Mine is a 1982, when they were not black with orange stripe and dragbar, but brown with buckhorn handlebars. Mine is all original, but for some reason has black wheels instead of gold. A messup at the factory ?
hey bmp72, I have an original black and orange 1982 Sturgis. I think the brown & gold color scheme on yours was a rare one-year-only color option to mark the MoCo's buyback from AMF. All the previous Sturgis models were black & orange. Hope you keep yours stock!
Probably should have researched the Sturgis a little more for even more info, like the fact that they didn’t make a Sturgis in 83. Haha. I just repeated what the owner told me he had...
Always look forward to seeing the video's. and ugggh yes the rain is hitting Jacksonville too. got to get up your way. last time I was up there was airborne jump school long time ago. take care.
I have both a 1981 and 1982 FXB Sturgis. Unlike the one here ine are both original. There is so much not correct on the bike in the video... mid controls, whole shifter link mechanism, heads are supposed to be black, seat, etc etc etc
My favorite bike of all time !!! All belt drive a all time classic !!!! One of my best friends when i was in the army had one i rode it was a awesome bike for its time,,,
Awesome video, John! A lot of us like cars as well as motorcycles, especially old cars! That Antonio sure seemed like a cool dude - quick with a smile. I like people who are good-natured like that.
HD has run the same neck bearing setup for like 50 years or something. So its pretty much always good to go. The issue is length of the front end. They’re usually advertised as what they fit and if they’re stock length 3” over stock 6” over stock, etc.
Help me!! Tell me about your bars on Badboy? Since the 1st time I saw your scoot from that vlogging vantage point I've been j o n s I n' hard to migrate my Fatboy into a Badboy. I'm hunting down a springer, but til then I can do a bar swap. Much thx!
John Maxwell , I have, that's what started the j o n s I n' , though I was stung by the springer when I was about 7, the realization that the Badboy was only made 3 years put a foot in my ass to get sprung...so the search is on!
man i saw one at a show last weekend in SC, I was telling my buddy how rare they are. Next thing you know 2 more rolled up hahaha. it was a sturgis club, very cool!
Awesome video! Your video editing skills are getting better all of the time. One suggestion, when you plug someone else's site, include the link in the description. 1) I'm lazy 2) I want to watch the whole video at once instead of pausing it and looking up the site or going back and searching for the part where the URL is mentioned (Kind of part of number one). Keep up the awesome videos!
You could have added it in your reply to me...just saying. Quick question, I just converted a friend of mine's 2005 Road Glide to a trike. He's in his late 60's and just wants to ride. Do you think that the added expense of changing the triple tree to change the steering dynamics is worth it? There are a lot of companies that sell triple trees that improve steering on trike conversions.
I’ve ridden both versions, if it’s already together, what does he think about it? It is slightly better with a different steering angle, but to a young guy with plenty of upper body strength, it’s not worth the cost. A fella that was getting older, Might like to have it easier! Also, I’m on my phone, so changing that stuff is a pain. Thanks for heads up, and check the video description. I updated it.
Thanks, I'll bring it up to him. Great old guy! I've put thousands of miles on the road with him. He can no longer hold up a bike, hence the trike modification. I'll suggest the triple tree upgrade to him. I'd miss him on the road.
Hey I'm asking this on every platform in hopes you see it and reply lmao... Is it possible to move the foot controls farther forward on say a 2014 a road king? I'm 6'9" and they feel like mid controls to me.
I noticed u have a 2 cable throttle setup on your bike. What is your thoughts on the 2 cable vs 1 cable setup ? I use to not like having two cables hanging down from my throttle but, the older i get i keep thinking that having the push pull setup is a bit safer. Just wondering what your thoughts are. Thanks man. Have a good one !
I have always thought it wasn't such a bad idea; if nothing else you have a spare in case one breaks. Unlike the new fly by wire. Awesome to have...until it doesn't work.
Bryan Keith you'll love that second cable when one breaks. I broke one on my '78 KZ1000 I just flipped the other around, I had to use the throttle backwards wich was a little funny but sure as shit beats walking and pushing.
I like clips like this. i really enjoy your wrenching videos. I like riding clips too. I do not like guy's who ask me to donate money or follow their patreon channel or buy their t shirts. keep up the nice work John I've been with you since you began.
Haha, it’s hard to keep everyone happening. I get a lot of comments asking about how they can support the channel, and that I should start patreon. I also get asked a lot about merchandise. It’s just part of the process for making a brand that’s profitable, and not a hobby that takes finances away from life’s necessities! If I ever do any of it, it will likely be pretty low key.
So the resson its called a soft tail cause the back fender is long and close to the floor and a hard tail is called hard tail cause the fender is bobber style cut correct me if I got it right It was in the test when I studied HD motorcycles
Thanks great video. I have always liked the Sturgis. By the way, I got my Mastech MS8268. I like it. I like the low price too. Thanks for the recommendation. See you next week.
Not trying to nitpick, but there's so much misinformation on TH-cam regarding HDs. The original FXB Sturgis was produced for the model years 80, 81, and 82. There was no 1983 Sturgis. The Sturgis was discontinued in 83 and the Low Rider carried on with twin belts as the FXSB(belt) model. I think what's sitting in the back of that pickup is an 83 Low Rider with the later '91 Dyna Sturgis graphics on the tanks along with a bunch of cosmetic modifications. The original Sturgis tanks had the HD bar & shield and the name "Sturgis" only appeared on the fork badge. I've got a stock, original 1982 FXB as my daily driver. It's a matter of opinion, but the '77 & '78 Harley XLCR Sporty could probably be considered the original 'dark custom'--- blacked out motor, black paint & covers, and black pipes. Before that, I think the first blacked-out Harley mill was on the 1973 Sportster. I love the AMF-era Harleys.
Good comment, I think the 83s had gold stripes. That one is missing black ham can air cleaner and small bag on sissy bar. I want to find an original, but hard to find at a sane price.
I think the 1982 gold & brown Sturgis was a one-year only optional color scheme to commemorate the buyback from AMF. I think the AMF years and the immediate post-AMF years were Willie G's Golden Age--- a really amazing array of classy bikes, and the late Shovels were as reliable as the first Evos. Willie G.'s design were always understated and powerful, and even the Harley print ads from that era were in a class by themselves....
Thanks Steven. To be honest, I get kinda tired of working, and then editing me working. It's nice to offer up something else. Since it's been raining, I haven't been able to ride myself. Glad you enjoyed this one!
I know a guy bought that same model and year sturgis hd for his wife in 91'-92'. She was afraid to ride it so its kist been sittin in their shed ever since. I remember climbing all over that thing with my buddy pretending we were badass's. Cool bike
@@TheHarleyTech after watching g this video, several days later I called my buddy and asked him about that bike. He said it's still sitting in his dad's shed. It's caked with dust and rotting away. His dad always refused to sell it . He would always says " that's the wife's bike I can't sell it". So, it's still there. Good times
@@TheHarleyTech ya. My friend and I would steal a couple budweisers out of his dad's garage fridge and go to the shed and act like we were riding the bike while drinking beer. We were idiots. Lol
yea, I don't have much to compare it to. I certainly wasn't around back then, so...Through working on bikes, I've learned some things are worth arguing with people about, and some things aren't.
You kind of sounds like Beavis , when you have your helmet on with the visor down. Just thought, I would note that. Lol I enjoy your channel and the videos. I look forward to Wednesday to see what you got for us. Keep up the good work!
Is it true that H/D dealerships don’t want to service bikes that are more than ten years old? I was told because the “Techs” don’t really have the experience to work on them!
Sometimes that’s part of it. It’s not so much 10 years, though. We don’t work on anything older than 2000. Considering I’m 33 and graduated in 2012, why would I know how to work on older stuff? Throw in the fact that rarely does anyone actually want an older bike worked on, there’s never a chance for us to learn. By the time we learn on that one bike, we may not see another one for a year. That knowledge is long gone by then! Throw in the fact that a 30+ year old bike like this one may have that many band aids on it to keep it running, it’s hard to do “good” work and have the bike leave safe at a practical price. I may do a video on this stuff in the future. There’s a handful of other reasons, but how much can a man type with his thumbs!?
That 83 was far from stock , back fender was wrong , silver heads and rockers not stock , I’d be checking the VIN number. Could be just a pieced together bike with a sturgis paint job
I picked up an 1980 FXB Sturgis a couple of years ago from a family friend, it's in almost mint all original condition and has 13k miles on it.
This was not a good example of a sturgis .
Hey John. You know what makes your channel better than other Harley channels? Your calmness and modesty! Keep up the good work. Regards from Russia
I bought one of those brand new at Past and Present Bike Works back in the day it was a nightmare with issues but I still loved it. Maintenance was easy, check the fluids, yes three puddles of each. Riding to a Show in February and NO SNOW... you are living right my Brother, you are living right! Even your "it's not a video", videos are good!!! Thank you for all you do, when you do, what you do!!! Willie
Softail, the very next thing to a hardtail! Had mine 15 years I know exactly how you feel!
I would love to have the Sturgis! May even clone one!
BELL SQUAD! It’s nice to see the happenings at a dealership, miss working in one for sure. Cool video John! Always like watching ur stuff man
The Sturgis has been one of my favourites since I was a kid man! Keep the good content coming John, I'm loving what you're doing.
Thanks Sam!
Yeah, the wife and I had to deal with the rain all through the Smokies this week too, but we made a side trip to your dealership Friday. It wasn't raining IN your shop, so it was one of the drier moments of our trip. It was fun meeting you and your friends.
Thanks again for stopping by! Glad to put a YT name to a face!
I am in Alapaha, near Tifton, Ga. we too are having a lot of rain.
Anything and everything Harley John. It's all good!
Thank you for responding, I understand, keep those videos coming oh and by the way the hourly rate up here in New York and New Jersey is; $105.00 per hour! Great video! I graduated from Columbus Tech for automotive technology in 2012. I got extra credit for judging the Jordan CarShow, great experience!
That’s pretty cool. That’s the best way to get extra credit I’ve ever heard of!
I hate slop tails but ALWAYS loved this particular bike. Where can I find one to add to my stable?
I love the 83. That's the body style I fell in love with when my dad would take me by the Harley shop when I was a kid. Dang John, I had all but forgotten about that. I almost got choked up. I liked it the video
Yeah that was our same weather situation down here in SE Alabama rode 2days to work!
Was that a slotted primary cover to keep the belt cool? I have heard of homemade versions but that looked factory.
The first Sturgis I saw and if you want to see an all original one go to Sturgis, South Dakota they have on sitting in the front of the store 'NOT FOR SALE" it is pretty cool though.
I remember the first Sturgis I ever saw. It was a twin belt drive too! Primary and secondary. 80ci? Or 1340 cc...
Debating a 05 heritage softail or a 05 night train. Like em both. Will be a daily rider bike to and from work & life. What do you think John maxwell
Hey John I have a 83 FXSB duel belt drive. My buddy from the Marines who I served with has a 1981 Sturgis. I beleave in 83 the Sturgis became the Lowrider.
They only made the sturgis from 80 to 82 and then in 91. I own an 80 and a 91
John in the video I saw that you have flush mounted fuel gage and gas cap I am thinking of adding it to my Lowrider how do you like them? Thanks
The ones I have suck. They’re from amazon. Mine is a 96, though. Depending on your year low rider, if HD makes them, they’re by far the best. Mine leak like hell.
Thanks John for the quick reply and advice
Dude this was an awsome post. Especially the Sturgis in the pick up
Thanks man, glad I saved the footage, haha
This is the second time I see this vlog off the tail end of a Willie G video talking about how he came up with the Sturgis and the fact that it boasted a forward and final drive belt. Would be awsome in the future if you could do videos on vintage bikes Harley or not.
I want to know what you are using to get such clear audio while riding? I have never heard that kind of quality on here before.
It's linked in the description of the video. Same stuff Blockhead uses. glad you like it!
9:25 the ad that was playing was my place of employment lol 😂 Shoutout to Energy Savers 👍🏻
I was surprised that I didn't see one in the HD Museum when I visited in 2015 though Willie G had one in his collection next door. A good one is as scarce as hens teeth in Australia, plenty got knocked off.
When are Evo's going to be the next shovel head. The 99 softail is looking at 20 years pretty quick.
For sure!
Enjoyed the 83 Sturgis bike.
NOTHING sounds like a SHOVELHEAD!
Wish like hell I could find another one that I could afford.
Had a 82 Sturgis, first new HD I ever bought, because of that bike I learned to work on motorcycles.
I think a lot of people learned to work on bikes because they own or owned a shovel, haha
It was the bike that almost put HD out of business, we used to call them 200 mile bikes, after 200 miles you had to work on them again. Funny thing is because of that bike I started riding Sportsters, Still do to this day 30 plus years later

So I'm looking at the sportster 48
Is that a bike u can have two people on ? Thanks for the help
You can. For short rides it’s ok, but a bigger bike is better. For long rides, you’ll likely be sad with your purchase. If you plan to ride 2 up a lot, and can afford a bigger bike, I’d go bigger!
I love you're bike john I'm looking into one they are around 10000 where I'm at my current bike is a heritage classic
I was hardly far away. I think I was a whopping 3 miles from home, haha. Thanks for the appreciation!
Love them shovelhead Harley, great video.
Nice Porsche at the end !! That sturgis is so sweet!
I have a Shovelhead Sturgis :-) (FXDB). Mine is a 1982, when they were not black with orange stripe and dragbar, but brown with buckhorn handlebars. Mine is all original, but for some reason has black wheels instead of gold. A messup at the factory ?

Which bike do you prefer riding?
I enjoyed the video John, it was different from your other videos but it was still educational and interesting.
Probably should have researched the Sturgis a little more for even more info, like the fact that they didn’t make a Sturgis in 83. Haha. I just repeated what the owner told me he had...
Cool video. Nice to see out & doing stuff. Enjoyable.
Always look forward to seeing the video's. and ugggh yes the rain is hitting Jacksonville too. got to get up your way. last time I was up there was airborne jump school long time ago. take care.
Finally a video about Antonio. Great video my friend
I have both a 1981 and 1982 FXB Sturgis. Unlike the one here ine are both original. There is so much not correct on the bike in the video... mid controls, whole shifter link mechanism, heads are supposed to be black, seat, etc etc etc
The only way it could be an 83 is if it wasn't registered until 83!
Keep them ALL coming
Sure they match....in Ga. Red & black always. Go Dawgs !
Los Angeles CA, it's riding season ALL year around.
My favorite bike of all time !!! All belt drive a all time classic !!!! One of my best friends when i was in the army had one i rode it was a awesome bike for its time,,,
They are super cool. Seems I’ve seen one all cut up in the halls on Juneau drive, as well. Damn shame!
Nice John, cool way to spend a day off. keep 'em coming man!
I grew up on Evo love the sound. This 83 sounds awesome. I have never seen the first dark horse just pictures thanks man
awesome dood and Hi from Sarsfield Victoria Australia from Phil and my 2009 superglide fxdc
great work, John Maxwell!
Riding a springer is always a good day.
Awesome video, John! A lot of us like cars as well as motorcycles, especially old cars! That Antonio sure seemed like a cool dude - quick with a smile. I like people who are good-natured like that.
he's a pretty cool dude, for sure
Thanks, I appreciate that!
I need a Chattahoochie Harley T need to jump online and hunt one down. yep Shovel heads are the sound for sure
hello there
anyone can tell me if any springer front end is compatible for my 2001 dyna 88ci?dyna or paughco... thank
you
HD has run the same neck bearing setup for like 50 years or something. So its pretty much always good to go. The issue is length of the front end. They’re usually advertised as what they fit and if they’re stock length 3” over stock 6” over stock, etc.
Thank you john for your return, i love your Channel From France and good luck for the futur😉 (Sorry for my english)
god bless you
Hey John, thanks that was cool, some fantastic old cars and some cool Harley’s way cool vlog😎😃👍
I always look forward to seeing your vids!! Keep up the good work
For me, the appeal of that Sturgis is lost, the value diminished by all the non-OEM stuff on it.
John, This was a good video. I enjoyed seeing the cars and the ‘83 Sturgis. Anything you upload I’ll watch
Help me!! Tell me about your bars on Badboy? Since the 1st time I saw your scoot from that vlogging vantage point I've been j o n s I n' hard to migrate my Fatboy into a Badboy. I'm hunting down a springer, but til then I can do a bar swap. Much thx!
They’re 14” from road six customs. I have a video on my bad boy, if you haven’t seen it.
John Maxwell , I have, that's what started the j o n s I n' , though I was stung by the springer when I was about 7, the realization that the Badboy was only made 3 years put a foot in my ass to get sprung...so the search is on!

Hey I'm asking this on every platform in hopes you see it and reply lmao... Is it possible to move the foot controls farther forward on say a 2014 a road king? I'm 6'9" and they feel like mid controls to me.
I believe you are looking for extended reach forward controls.
DannibusX ok but you're saying it is possible?
DannibusX ok john emailed me back and told me what I can do.
Cars are cool too ! Looked like an awesome meet up. Nothing wrong with mixing it up John. Great episode.
Thanks man!

Pretty rare to see a single cable on a Harley. I’ve never put much thought into it honestly, it just looks normal to me.
I know I like having 2 cables. Just in case.
True. I have, more than once, had to use the second cable to rig up as my pull cable. Saved my butt in the middle of no where.
Bryan Keith you'll love that second cable when one breaks. I broke one on my '78 KZ1000 I just flipped the other around, I had to use the throttle backwards wich was a little funny but sure as shit beats walking and pushing.
Cool cars shown John. love the H-D Sturgis bike..👍🏻
John you driving around is awesome. I'm.laugjing my arse off!!
haha, glad I left it in then!
Another top vid my man, what gloves are they? A product review here and there would be sweet
Dude! Do more of this!
Aw, I miss you too, buddy!
yay Antonio!
great video look forward to your posts the 83 and pickup very very nice
Some nice stuff there, my mate had a Sturgis yrs ago 👍😎
Great vid 👍🏼
Always Kool to see machines of 2 and 4 wheels
Your welcome and thanks again
So the resson its called a soft tail cause the back fender is long and close to the floor and a hard tail is called hard tail cause the fender is bobber style cut correct me if I got it right It was in the test when I studied HD motorcycles
Nice Sturgis. I have a friend that owns one. It is not as clean as this one! Everything is blacked out on his though. All original.
Thanks great video. I have always liked the Sturgis. By the way, I got my Mastech MS8268. I like it. I like the low price too. Thanks for the recommendation. See you next week.
awesome! Glad you like it!
Solid information. I regurgitated some unconfirmed information, and I won’t do it anymore. I mention the mistake in a later video.
Great job mixing up the video's, I'm sure it can be difficult coming up with new material, you keep posting I'll keep watching👍
Cool bike
if you were climbing around on a Sturgis model and lived to tell about it, I think you probably are bad asses! haha
Lol
If I'm not mistaken Harley stopped production of the Sturgis in 82' They were only produced 80-82.
That’s what I thought, but dude told me an 83, and his plaque said so. I just rolled with it.
It had some Sturgis parts, belt guard, wheels, but the tank emblem was from the 91 Sturgis. I don't think it was a Sturgis either.
yea, I don't have much to compare it to. I certainly wasn't around back then, so...Through working on bikes, I've learned some things are worth arguing with people about, and some things aren't.
You kind of sounds like Beavis , when you have your helmet on with the visor
down. Just thought, I would note that. Lol
I enjoy your channel and the videos. I look forward to Wednesday to see what you got for us. Keep up the good work!
Funny, I was thinking the same thing! I'm glad I'm not the only one.
Clearly, I'm going to need to remember some Beavis lines...
...I was going to say Butthead (not at all an insult - two of the coolest guys ever created). When you mentioned getting food at the show.
@@TheHarleyTech I bought a Beavis and butt head shirt at hot topic
Awesome video thanks for sharing
Cool video. Keep them coming.
Awesome video if you do more like that I will be watching them
Awesome Jim! I appreciate it. It's nice to get out of the shop with the camera some, too
Is it true that H/D dealerships don’t want to service bikes that are more than ten years old?
Awesome videos brother from Toronto Canada
Nice stuff. Thanks for the video.
Gave it a big dirty thumbs up..i dig that Sturgis
That 83 was far from stock , back fender was wrong , silver heads and rockers not stock , I’d be checking the VIN number. Could be just a pieced together bike with a sturgis paint job
Were gonna call your buddy "Smiley" ..good video
John,,,, I like the look of, your chrome buttons with the black housings!! You got me thinking man” Sweet..
Nice videos, thanks for sharing
Good stuff John. Keep it comin😎👍
