This,is amazing!I'm watching this video with my 86 year old mother.40 odd years ago,her and my father(rip),travelled all over Canada and the states. My father built a tent trailer, very similar to "Ruby",that he pulled behind his loaded '78 Goldwing.Every so often,I would hook up with them on the road.I had a '78 400 Hawk.Kick start only and drum brakes.I put many miles on that bird!
I loved that time in life and your video brought it all back to my mother and I.Beautiful!

You had what i think was a cascading number of errors. 1 error causing the 2nd , etc.
I think the voltage regulator broke, that subsequently fried the stator AND the ECM.
electronic modules do NOT like over-voltage.
Same for batteries, if the bike overcharges the battery long and hard it can cook the battery.
Anyway, thnx for the fun video.

At 07:35 isn't this the authentic Harley Davidson experience ?
Regular mechanical troubles, despite having paid big $$$ bucks ?
Not to razz you, you could probably write a book.
Years ago I saw a buddy bought a "cruiser bike". I said 'you had to get the HD for your retirement' - he replied "Naw, can't afford the Harley I got a Honda Shadow instead...so I don't have to hire "that other guy". I'm like "what other guy" ? He said "the guy who follows behind you to pickup the parts as they fall off your Harley". He's like:
"I just wanna ride a cruiser & travel...no continual roadside repairs....ergo...no Harley for me !"
This conversation was probably 25 years ago now.
I've been spoiled by reliable Japanese bikes too.
No slam on HD riders either, we just have a VERY different set of expectations on our motorcycle lifestyle !

The Rally infrastructure is there, the campgrounds are equipped, and the vendors aren't grouchy yet. It’s the HD extended warranty. I believe it’s ESP. I have heard the factory warranty will not be good if you pull a trailer. The extended warranty has not been an issue.

  • @donmartin9567
    @donmartin9567 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hmmmmm, personally I don't pull a trailer but I fully understand that for your guys it works really well. It would be a shame if you guys had to give up Ruby but I can also see you both on Adventure bikes although that'd necessitate going back to a packable tent, on the bike and less comfort items. The other option, especially for the miles you folks do, may be a GoldWing. I've had 2 of them and plan to get another this coming spring. As I say, I don't tow a trailer but a lot of folks do and I haven't heard of the issues that you are facing with your Harley but then just cause I haven't heard doesn't mean they don't happen.
Having said all that I don't see how pulling a trailer would cause Stator problems, Regulator problems and ECM problems. I'd be more suspicious of extra power consumption (like lots of accessories) contributing to your electrical problems but you don't seem to have a bunch of accessories.
In any case, keep riding and having fun, whichever you way you go!

I have a buddy that lives in Sturgis and we ride ADV motorcycles (we both don't like Harleys or Indians). I lived in Mooresville, NC, and I'm a fan of Moto GP, F1 & road courses (dislike NASCAR). I grew up in SoCal, went to Univ. in the midwest, and spring breaked in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Do you see a pattern here?

I feel for you with all the HD problems. I used to work at a HD dealer. After working there, I definitely would never own one. Indian might be a good alternative. But Yea, BMW GS is the ultimate. They can have problems too. But for the "love of pete".... four freaking stators! OMG... i would take alice to the dump by Alices restaurant and bury that thing! Don't want to sound mean or anything of the sort. But the proof of HD quality and engineering prowess or lack of... is painfully clear. If you do go the Indian route, be sure to look into the dealer network. I have 250,000 miles under my belt. Got rid of the HD, the Indian, the honda, the Kawasaki... yea !BMW GS, least problems with this one. Best of luck and God Bless!

Harley pins your Vin # to the ecm/ bcm so you can just go find one, install and go you have to go though Harley and they dont f$%ing have one.ive been riding Harleys for 45 years and I will never buy another one. they can't support the shit they sell.

That's the one reason I will NEVER own a fuel injected motorcycle ESPECIALLY A HARLEY-DAVIDSON. I only want the simplicity of an Evolution and with a good cam and tune it's going to have plenty of power for 2 up riding with gear. I just wish my bike was a Softail versus Dyna although the Dyna will probably handle more weight without as many upgrades. I expect any of my 1100's would handle towing a trailer or just 2 up riding with plenty of gear.

Just came back from a 3 wk x country trip myself. And, my 2013 F6B just hit 70K miles. Tires/tyres, brakes, oil changes are still the only service ever needed. Just my .02. Keep having BIG FUN.

Others have gone on to say that they've spent nearly $10K for the week they were there. Well, if I do go in the future. I'd probably stay for 3 days max. Long way back to the pacific coast.
