Madame de Pompadour yearns to see the Doctor's face again...
This video was specially created for #Clockdown, the worldwide tweetalong of the Doctor Who episode 'The Girl in the Fireplace' on Wednesday 6 May 2020, the 14th anniversary of its first broadcast.
Written by Steven Moffat and starring Sophia Myles as Madame de Pompadour, this video was home-produced remotely during the 'lockdown' period of the COVID-19 outbreak in April/May 2020.

Y'know, sometimes it seems Doctor Who showrunners are like US presidents: oftentimes the public mocks and ridicules the current one, but then someone else comes in and people think back to the "good old days" of the president/showrunner they used to relentlessly slam and roast.
@@commenterjosh2428 Nah, not quite. When Moffat took over his previous stories were some of the best & most popular in the Davies era. When Chibnall took over his previous stories were either forgotten or not very well liked. The fan base was split on Moffat. But I doubt you could find 10% of the long-time fan base who actually likes Chibnall as a writer.

And if only Moffat would write for 13 maybe we can see if shes actually capable of playing the role and finally get a good script

Thousands of fans are now scrambling to write fanfiction that has the Doctor finding the ship and downloading Madame de Pompadour's memories into a new body.
That is the only way to ease the pain.
You would end up with a human pompadour and computer Pompadour!
@@honoradele Not if it took place after the events of the episode. In which case the human version is gone. But the computer memory core is still out there, spinning along with the empty vessel.

These are technically not the same people.
The historic Madam Du Pompadour seemingly did live a normal life after the interaction with The Doctor, but the interaction confused a ship's AI quite a lot.

It could be both in a way but I think there's clear indications it's only the ship but you could pick either of them to feel this way because as far as the episode went with the real madame we see her thoughts and her end could this be the computer after all these years breaking from the doctor's interaction

Oh my god, so sad. This was my favorite all-time episode before Heaven Sent. This ending, having her consciousness perpetually trapped in a derelict spaceship is heart breaking. Its also brilliant writing.
Oh my god, that’s terrifying. Imagine being dead but thinking you’re alive, stranded and alone in space, unable to see the person you know can save you yet being unsure if that person even remembers you.
Not even dead: a machine thinking it's a living being, waiting for someone who doesn't know it exists.
And nobody ever investigated the loss of this ship, with the people and crew.
Moffat, showing us that the Doctor moves on leaving the debris of his adventures behind. That's the Doctor.
A fitting response to the recent lockdown sequel to the Family of Blood i think.

When Russel T Davies took over he showed us the the cost to those the Doctor leaves behind while he/she goes on his/her way.

Especially considering twelves final speech it would make sense this new doctor would hold love and hope in her heart above all else, so giving one final chance to a being that has so little time left is a fitting thing for the doc to do. Especially if it takes place post the loss of gallifrey for her

The last 5 minutes of "girl in the fireplace" was the first experience I ever had with Doctor Who.
It happened in january-february of 2007. Approximately 3-4 months after my mothers suicide.
The original episode immediately spoke to me, with the doctor trying to go back to take madame de pompadour to the stars as she had asked, but being unable to do so.
He met the king of france yet again and he was told of her passing, but his giving the doctor a letter, and the phrase "I'm always alright" has stuck with me ever since, as well as the hauntingly beautiful music box melody of that episode.
I waited to find out what it was because the scifi (not syfy) channel aired the credits too quickly for me to read anything as it was around 3AM at the time, and I had no idea what it was.
Then randomly, I saw it again 3 weeks later, the same episode and found that doctor who helped my healing. It was tremendously emotional for me to watch this followup to "girl in the fireplace" and to write this. I hope that there's a full episode saving the ship somehow as only the doctor can.
With all of the above, Thank you for making this followup to the episode that started my healing.
This episode hurt like hell. Over the years I thought that the Doctor started saying "Allons-y" because he loved her so much. And because I imagined he snuck away, without us knowing, spending with her the time he missed the first time. Until then he kept saying "Fantastic". After her, he started with the "allons-y"
But this... this hurts twice as much.
This story has stuck with me for 14 years as one of the most beautiful stories in all of Doctor Who. I thought the original ending was sad enough but this is absolutely heartbreaking. Well done Mr. Moffat
They weren't winding us up when they said this would be dark...
I never would've thought that my favourite stand-alone story would get an official epilogue 14 years after its release. This is beautiful.
This kind of makes me double sad for Madame de Pompadour and River. Who's also in the library, living as a memory in a computer.
Please come back to the series full time, Moffat. These lockdown vignettes are the best Who since Capaldi left. We NEED an episode now where the Doctor takes Madame Pompadour’s consciousness to live with River Song. Oh, the sparks that would fly there. ❤️
This reminds me of the 11th Doctor episode "The Bells of Saint John" where minds that have been uploaded to the internet.
Yes, it gave me similar vibes, but sadder.
As heartbreaking as Matt Smith's "you are a Dalek" to Jenna Coleman, and her heartbreaking replies that she is human, and she fought the Daleks, and to remember her. Still do.
Headed straight to the video after the rewatch, thinking it'd be Reinette recounting a final visit from the Doctor (some time between her writing the letter and her death).
But nope. Instead we got this. Cos who wants cheering up right now, eh!?!!
Yep. I thought it would be some loophole the Doctor found to make contact with her once more without unraveling the timestream. Like visiting young Amelia one last time, even after her whole story had been written. I actually like this as a haunting alternative, though. :)

Hes best as a hobby writer, not a show runner. He likes to take his time making every minute count, not filling up an entire season.
@@grey8288 I must say I disagree. While he certainly has some annoying "Moffatisms", as a show runner he took the show to some very exciting new places. In general I found his format more exciting than Davies's or Chibnall's.

Maybe he just needed some time off from Who. He could be show runner again and get in more guest writers to do the ideas and heavy lifting. Move away from massive story arcs and just do a couple seasons of really good individual tails. Having Moffat involved to select the scripts that get made, do story editing and basically keep everything together so that its fun and makes sense would be great.

I watched this episode again a few weeks ago because it's one of my favourite episodes, if not the favourite. Imagine my joy when I read about this a few days ago. Thank you... made more poignant by the recent death of Sophia Myles's dad due to *that* virus :-( x
Ditto. This was my favorite all time episode until Heaven Sent came out, now its #2. Such a perfect story for Tennant, could you see any of the other Doctor's pulling this episode off? Just like Heaven Sent was perfect for Capaldi. Such great writing.
There was more story and emotion in this brief couple of minutes then in the whole of the last two series! It is a sad reminder of what Dr Who once was. No agendas or politics just pure story telling. Thank you Moffat.
I mean RTDs and Moffats eras were laden with politics, but the difference was, they were (for the most part) cleverly integrated into the plot, rather than "amazon bad, Hindus can marry muslims, and let's stop a space future racist"
I mean RTD wrote stories in series 1, about humanity stagnating from fake news, then from game shows, and an two partner abour fat, farting, power hungry, capitalistic and tyrannical aliens in 10 downing street, but his era was subtle, chibnalls isnt

@@matthewlacey4198 if what you got from those episodes is, "Amazon bad, Hindus can marry Muslims, and stopping a space racist" you sincerely missed the point and everything that happened both with the partition as well as the American civil rights moments lol. None of those episodes are even about what you said. The only thing we do agree with is Dr who has always been political. Rosa, is a hopeful message that kindness perseveres even against the worst of people, ending with the Rosa asteroid all in a fresh look at American civil rights. The racist isn't even the focus of the episode, the focus is that when faced with history all the Dr is stuck doing is witnessing and sometimes taking part in. "Hindus can marry Muslims" did you even watch the episode that's literally not it at all? This like the Rosa episode is when faced with bloody history, not even the Dr can save the family of someone she cares for, and is stuck just watching while it breaks her hearts whole. The episode is not about Amazon, the main point is that automation stagnating humanity and leading to us no longer being in control essentially. Similar in a way to smile, except it is how a bad person can turn something essential against us. Once again, did you even pay attention when watching the episodes?

I'd have preferred no villain at all, pure historical, same for Demons of the Punjab, it didnt need weird guardian angel aliens, go pure historical there too, just tighten up 13s speech at the end and you've got that hopeful story you referred to
The Kerblam episode was flawed in so many ways, let's be honest, she sees an exploited worker's plan to reform capitalism, and what does she do? Stands idly by while he blows himself up, and aligns herself with the corrupt, exploitative system which led him to that point, it's almost as bad as her wanting to give the giant spiders a "humane" death by suffocation and starvation, rather than the Trump caricature's suggestion of a bullet to the head, yeah it's more direct and involved but its quicker and more humane
I just dont agree with how 13s morality and ethics are written, Punjab and Rosa should've been pure historicals, I'd have respected Chibnall's creative vision a little more if he changed the formula up slightly
I do admit that my summaries of the episodes were oversimplifications, but I was pointing out the things I didn't like, rather than what I thought worked
@@matthewlacey4198 I believe that is kind of the point and beauty of Rosa. No matter what, no matter how hateful this person is, they are that inconsequential. No matter how much they try and plan they never win and cannot do anything to stop progress. And I think that goes for real life as well. No matter how much these people hate, they just don't matter at all. The thijarians we're very important to the theme of the episode. The episode starts essentially with a lost memory between yaz and her grandma. And the doc against her better judgment wants to help. Not sure if you know about partition, but many many people and families were destroyed with no one to look over them or remember, much like the thijarian home world. So their penance is to watch over the dead with no one left to. Quite fitting and sad for the context of the episode imo. And you know, that episode made me look more into partition. Which I'm sure more people did too and that's the point of media to bring these up and make you think imo. Her speech on love is one of the most beautiful and brilliant bits of Dr who since it's restarted, it's not the Dr yelling at some aliens or humans making them afraid. It's the Dr, doing what he set out to, inspire hope and help people, as well as be that silent watcher. And I think the aliens are important as well, much like twice upon a time, it shows the Dr isn't alone in what she does. It's funny you bring up the spiders, I'm a big fan of star trek and the prime directive I believe is much the similar as what the Dr follows. And so letting creatures created thru the folly of someone live out the rest of their time instead of just slaughtering them is very fitting for the doctors character, do you know how many genocides the Dr has seen? Do you think she wants to see another?
@@matthewlacey4198 thank you for admitting you very much oversimplified what the episodes are about, and in the process missed the mark. Also, she didn't stand idly by, she begged him not to. He went there himself knowing they would blow. He was very much unhinged and seriously no talking sense into him even though the doctor had another beautiful speech. Also, she definitely doesn't align herself with this malignant corporation. She even turns down a position. However, what she does do is give them a better viewpoint on people and what workers need which is very much important for companies to realize, especially after/still during the COVID pandemic. Literally the last thing they say to her is they will hire more workers and better rights etc which is as best as could happen there. I enjoyed the kerblam episode personally except Kiras death 😢. The first season is very important in building this new doctor and where she stands. With resolution imo cementing her as the Dr and showing how far she'd go to stop the Daleks and save someone. All bundled together with a very touching story of a bad father trying to make right, and a son who's lost so much yet still inspired by a friend to keep trying. And in so doing he rekindles the relationship with his father which is very touching.
I think I forgot how truly sad (but beautiful) this story really is :o Such a masterpiece! :)

Even Dickens couldn't do this!
So watching this little episode just then, literally sent shivers down my spine, feeling that, the clockwork creatures was planning on actually doing that to madame de pompadour, and in this episode they actually did, finding out that the computer was talking believing it was mad and the pompadour, is more spine chilling then any horror movie, great work, loved it

Why Moffat WHYYY
Because he's just that good at writing and because he could.
The Girl in the Fireplace has always been one of my favorite Who episodes. Madame de Pompadour was one of the reasons why I have wanted to see a "Historic" companion. Someone who views the world in a familiar, but new and distant way, and is able to comprehend more or less what is going on. As a vehicle of social commentary, it could do things and shine a light on things that a more contemporary Companion, who grew up with such a topic as the "accepted norm" could only really do in the abstract. But it would have to be the right character and Reinette (Sofia Myles) did it so effortlessly I would have killed to see her step off the Tardis and be amazed or disgusted by the future before her. So sad that the Doctor had gotten it so wrong in the end, the separation and connection of time and events. Why couldnt he have whooshed back in the Tardis. Or taken her with him through the fireplace once more. So very sad, and This is every bit as powerful as the original. It doesnt strictly work from a plot perspective, but I don't care. I hope someone finds the poor ship

Idea. The doctor pre Hartnell finds the ship. Confused that it knows him/ her, doctor downloads her into his Tardis. This makes his Tardis unique, independent and in love with the doctor
