Toyota GR86 VS Toyota GR Supra | Is the Baby Supra Any Fun?

- 👋 So the new Toyota GR86 is about half the price of the Toyota GR Supra. Does that mean it's half the fun?! Why would anyone buy the GR86 if it's half the fun of a Supra? In todays video I drive my GR Supra 3.0 back to back with my brothers newly purchases GR86 to see if a half price GR86 is actually half the fun! I love comparing these two cars especially since both are equipped with the manual tranmission. Also very interesting to see how both the Supra and 86 were developed alongside other brands. Subaru and BMW. While the Supra has about 400 horsepower from it's turbocharged 3 liter 6 cylinder engine, and the GR86 only has 228 horsepower, how do these two Toyota sportscars compare. Instantly you'll notice how refined the Supra is, how fast it drives and how much of a high end sportscar it is. The GR86 feels more like an economy car and is pretty basic. However when you factor in the price of a GR86 is about half as much compared to the Supra, it actually seems like both cars are well price and worth their sticker. The GR86 is not fast, but it's peppy enough to be fun. And since the 86 weighs less then 3,000 pounds, it handles amazing! It is an absolute blast throwing the GR86 into turns and just driving it like you stole it! Also the GR86 can't really break too many speed limits all to easily so it seems like a sportscar you can just have an innocent fun with on the roads. The Supra is very powerful and can hit triple digit speeds without thinking. So you really need to control yourself. Overall I love what the Toyota GR86 has to offer for the money. What a fun car on a budget and feel just as fun as a Supra. The Supra is an amazing sportscar for about $60k and competes with cars that cost even more. I certainly love the refinements, tuning potential and performance characteristics of the GR Supra, but think many people who aren't ready to double the price of their car and go for a Supra will have just as many smiles driving the GR86! Both cars in manual especially really make them come alive!

Love these kinds of cars, they exemplify that more power does not equal more fun. The Mazda Miata is that prime example.
Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah it’s nice to show that you don’t always need the fastest most expensive car to have fun!
I believe that a lot of people would sleep on the 86 but don't get it twisted, that car is faster than you think!
So true! It’s peppy enough and we had a blast driving in the mountains with it!
1:16 ... I'm pretty sure the GR86 manual is 5.4 seconds and the auto is around 6 seconds!
Yeah Car and Driver showed that. However other tests found had those numbers flip flopped. So probably really depends on the driver
The auto is definitely slower than the manual
@@BrosFOURRSpeed factory specs are 6.1 manual, 6.6 auto - it's heavier and has longer gearing
There's no way an average person who wants to not destroy his car will get 5.4 seconds. Expect mid 6's.
@@awepossum1059 Yeah those tests are all prepped tracks and pro drivers. 86 is a fun car tho!
Can't wait to see you guys mod the 86. Would love to see some stickier tires in the future. Great content!
Working on it! Just did a video with carbon ground effects!
You and your beo and both really rich and veey fortunate.
Keep giving us wholesome car enthusiast content man
lol we are definitely not rich. Just middle class guys who budget money well to buy these cars. Very grateful for the position we are in tho. Anyone can buy these cars for sure! Just gotta live simple ;)
Had you enjoy the video!
7k for a turbo kit for the gr86 would be probably a lot more fun in a daily commute than the Supra ..😅
Yeah that'd be some fun for sure and be a blast! Still wouldn't be as refined tho as the Supra. Supra really does have a luxury feeling over a more economy feeling. But a turbo 86 would be a blast!
A turbo is a bad idea. It’s a balanced and accomplished sports car. Forced induction is gonna make it far less reliable
@BrosFOURRSpeed the Supra is 600 lbs more. And has way more isolating materials like Dynamat. 3 turns lock to lock vs 2.5. Lot of movement in the rear in the Supra. Doesn't feel as rear laterally stiff. Some of us don't like mixing luxury with sport. Prefer more focused products. Which is the GR86 imo. Supra is a better built car for sure.
Why ddint they just partner with mazda and put skyactive 2.5t engine :c
This how a review pro con for both overall shows positive results for each.
Glad you enjoyed it! Both are great cars for the money!
Because its the lightest/stiffest,unibody, manual, RWD sports car that's ever been. 0 luxury. Pure focus on driving fun. 30K Nm/degree of torsional rigidity at 2800 lbs. Just a bit lighter & stiffer than a 987. But geared short. Had a 987. And prefer my modified '22 BRZ.
It’s definitely a fun car for sure!
Because it's a fun car.
For sure!
I own a high powered gtr and the law nuture these cars do yourself a favor and pick up the 86. There is such a thing called useable power.
Yeah I loved my GTR too! Fun having all the power. But can definitely have just as much fun in a less expensive car with less power. GR86 is a blast!
I love my gr86 I live in SoCal so canyons are also a blast!
Such a fun car for roads like that!
Think you got the zero-60 backwards on the GR 86. Then manual is faster. You said it the other way around. Which may be true on the Supra. Most of the newest cars with multi speed autos are actually faster. But in the case of the manual is faster
Yeah I did. Found some different reviews that said it the other way I guess
While not exactly the same comparison I traded in an Alfa Romeo Guilia Veloce for 22 BRZ. Mainly for dynamics of being lighter & manual gearbox. There is some type of magic when a car is sub 3000 lbs. Plus I can drive the BRZ all out where I got into trouble with more HP of Guilia.
Oh cool. It's definitely a fun little car!
Nice video, really cool looking cars! I’m still debating on getting the base GR86, Mazda Miata RF or base GR Supra 😬. I’m holding back with the Miata because of their manual transmission issues and the gr86 for the RTV problem. Has your brother ever gotten that problem yet with his gr86? Thank you ☺️! Will certainly help!
86 has 1100 miles and zero issues! I think that issue was blown out of proportion, it didn’t effect all cars. I think it was minor. But all are great options! Just depends on the size you want and what you feel comfortable driving!
Great video and review. The Supra is a beautiful car and amazing. I don't think it's a road fair comparison however I do like how you made the video you weren't really comparing them to the t. And it's awesome that you gave the GR86 a fair chance by giving it the review that is entitled. Especially when the supras double the price but it's a great car nonetheless. Either way you can't really go wrong with these cars .especially if you're on the budget the gr 86 would be your best choice.
Yeah the whole point in this video was how the half price 86 stacks up against its big brother. And if half the price means half the fun. Both are great at their price points and really offer a lot!
Because it's fun bro.
Fun car for sure!
is the gr86 more fun in the twisties? If yes then does the supra come close at least?
I'd say the same. Supra handles amazing and has the power. It's a fantastic and confident car in the mountain roads. GR86 is just as fun.
Did you get ceramic coated and where id a good shop for that around Mooresville area?
Yeah I have Revfast do the costing on the Supra! They did my last Supra and GTR. Awesome place! revfast.com/
I used to have a gr86 as you can see in my profile pic, but at the time there weren’t any mods and tunes for it to go faster. 230 isn’t enough these days even for a car that light and nimble. Now that there are more aftermarket mods and tunes available to get that extra 100hp I’m thinking about getting another one. Your right, that gr Corolla engine would be great in a gr86. 🏆🏆🏆
Yea it could use more power for sure! But also still a fun car to drive!! We’ll see if I get to adding more power!
@@BrosFOURRSpeed you should I’ll be watching 👍
I bought a GR86 because I wanted subbie rumble and not bmw headaches..
Oh nice! However the Supra is more reliable. Also BMW is ranked 3 in top reliability now since Toyota has a stake with them. So Toyota/Lexus/BMW are all top reliability. Unfortunately the GR86/BRZ is actually more unreliable then the Supra lol. Fun cars tho!
I compare how you fit into the interior of the 86 and the supra. The 86 seems more spacious.
Kind of. It feels like a smaller car. However it's got some room. Supra like a bigger car with less space for stuff. But more roomy seats and leg room I'd say. So very similar
What turbo or supercharger would you recommend to add to the GR86? I looked on your guy’s website but didn’t see any recommendations but I definitely want to get the GR86 boosted when I buy one.
Not too sure. We havent done much research on them just yet
Coming from my experience with my Scion frs which is boosted and making roughly around 340ishwhp with a c38 supercharger
Boosting the fa20 will defiantly kill your mpg 😅 but it’s smiles per gallon. 12-14mpg on e85 and roughly 17-20 on 93.
Now would I recommend it….. sure. But for the price you’ll be putting in for the amount of modifications 10k for supercharger ( if buying new ) tuning + supporting mods
You could just put a little more and get a Supra second hand with more power then you’ll make with this platform.
However…. Mod it if you love the platform and the car.
I would work my way to a supercharger or turbo if I was honest rather then go full out on power modifications.
Tune it maybe do flex fuel kit.
Trust me when I say build it in steps and you’ll learn what you want out of the car. While your modding it little by little you’ll know if you want to make it more track focused and find your power goals while your playing around with it.
I'd be tempted to get an MX5 for $32k if money were a big factor.
This is right in line with that pricing! Both are fun!
GR86 platform all day just on it being lighter, with that being said I wouldn't cop
without the budget for FI or a engine swap all together. Was never a fan of the
Supra's hatch practicality, Supra looks way better stock.
Engine swap the 86? I’d rather buy something like the Supra for that money lol
@@BrosFOURRSpeed
There's a JZ tuning shop in my prefecture 4k on a 1jz swap. Supra looks cool, its too heavy for my driving preference, good video.
Because it’s a manual transmission car.
Lots of fun!
The Supra has no manual e brake though
GR86 100%
Great for the money!
Supra interior is much better, GR exterior IMO looks better. I get that the GR is a driver's car, but if the interior looked more modern/plush it would be awesome.
Keep in mind it's half the price. And really the interior of the Supra is a BMW, and the 86 is a Subaru. So very different level of cars. The GR86 premium is pretty nice tho
Gr86 Owners: I wish this was turbo. #changemymind
Lol that would still be a great option!
might be an outlier here but a turbo is not really necessary - it might even upset the balance of the car which is almost perfect. I think some general weight relief as well as suspension and brake mods are all that is needed for this delightful car (obviously oil cooler / baffle or sump for track duty).
@@marvmurchens9164I can see that. A super charger is a good happy medium to gain a bit of smooth power
With you marv. Amateur modifications are a good way to ruin the car
@@stms4411 What’s an amateur modification?? You can bolt on a supercharger in the garage and have zero issues, just have to know what to do.
People are making 500+ on a turbo kit with the 86.
Really? I haven't seen much numbers like that with stock internals. A stock motor wouldn't last long with that power
Found a MKV that’s actually affordable for 36k used, 1 owner 100k miles. Only problem is that it’s in Kentucky.
Wow not bad! Don’t see many with that kind of mileage
Will you get the JDL turbo kit or HKS supercharger? I
Maybe! We'll have to see what makes the most sense
@@BrosFOURRSpeedhighly recommend HKS Hipermax R coilovers.
So, half the luxury but all the fun?
Maybe not all the fun, but a different kid of fun! You'll have a blast ripping through any twisty road just like a Supra. Just won't get the fast acceleration. But the GR86 offer so many smiles for half the price!
Which car looks slower standing still? Which car turns your head in a busy parking lot? Which car would you rather be in waiting at a red light? Thanks to the gr86 the Supra looks so good!
Yeah Supra is more of a head turner. But at twice the price I’d expect that
The Supra looks disgusting imo. 86 resembles a Porsche while the Supra resembles a bmw. I have both the 86 and a 21 cayman gts and the gr86 actually gets more attention and conversation when people come into my garage lol
@@ak740_ how does the 86 resemble a Porsche and the Supra resemble a BMW? I don’t see that.
@ak740GR Now if you had a new Supra, THAT would get the most attention.
@@BrosFOURRSpeedprobably because the gr86 looks like a cayman and the Supra has the same chassis as the bmw z4.
Because it's 2800lbs and it has 4 seats. That's not something you get in modern cars. It weighs as much as an S chassis for fuck's sake, despite being bigger, more comfortable, and easier to tune. It's a demon on the mountain pass.
What? It is a modern car, what are you talking about?
@@BrosFOURRSpeed It's the exception, not the norm. Modern cars have been getting very heavy. That's why people love it so much, it's one of the last lightweight 4-seater coupes you can buy.
@@ItsNova816 Yeah that’s why the 86 is such a fun car for the money
GR86 is better
Better how? Certainly a fun car for half the price
@@BrosFOURRSpeed There is not much in track performance between the gr86 and the 2L turbo supra, so grunt aside its better. Almost every review for the gr86 , the reviewer exudes positivity about the GR86 , and that's not the case for the supra. Supra is boring?
You do realize I'm filming the 3.0 Supra right? The 4 cylinder Supra I'd agree. I'd go for the GR86 over that all day. But the B58 in the 3.0 Supra is very powerful. 400 WHP stock and with tuning and downpipe these make 500 WHP. Huge step up in car overall
13:37
That’s the last second of the video..
At …do 5,4…😒
What’s that mean?
@@BrosFOURRSpeed ☺️I'm sorry, but the automatic transmission of the GR is not superior... I mean by that, it is not a double clutch or like what is found on some European cars... so how is this difference?
@@hal-kayadi6490 what are you talking about? Never said it was superior, but it’s good if you don’t want a manual..depends on what the buyer wants.
