You should be a cardiologist instead it’s better work life balance and or still activitely fixing the heart. If you’re a interval one you still do heart produres.
Cardiologist, would probably be a better option. I was the same way with being a Neurologist or Neurosurgeon. Found out from my friend's dad who's an Anesthesiologist, Neurosurgeon's don't really have any free time compared to Neurologist also, my heart and mind were perfectly fine with becoming a medical doctor of neurology instead of neurosurgery.

Honestly, unless you are a glutton for punishment, don't. This is hell, if hell was paid handsomely. THE biggest egos, THE most toxic work envinroment, some of the worst hours, some of the most grueling work in medicine reside here. You'll also often give a difficult case your all only for the patient to die anyway because so many of them are pretty much dead on arrival and just going through the motions, but one of the motions is a 10 hour Benthall procedure followed by dead in the ICU 12 hours later. I don't know how people even finish this residency. Many of them don't.
Just as a note there's a new procedure called a TAVR that is gaining in popularity, it's a catheter based aortic valve replacement procedure so the aortic valve replacements via open heart is becoming less common (at least in my region).
Me too. I shadowed a cardiologist and most of the day they did that; she informed me that it was becoming more common for cardiologists to do TAVRs, while Cardiovascular or cardiothoracic surgeons go invasive
Great video as always. Something I wish you would have touched on is the perception that CT surgery is a 'dying field.' This was something I heard a lot before medical school due to the advancement of interventional cardiology. Lately I've been hearing that the fears were overblown and that CT surgery will be fine, but it'd be nice to hear a more definitive answer as I'm sure a lot of aspiring surgeons may get turned away from CT because of the fear of interventionalist encroachment.
From my time in medical school inc. Vascular rotation I understood that generally if open heart/vessel surgery can be tolerated it has better long-term outcomes than endovascular operations, however these are options in more frail patients unlikely to survive open surgery and its complications. I think cardiac surgery has a safe place in the "younger" cohort of patients, for now, although it is incredible what is able to be performed at the end of a long metal wire and imaging it still will not be as precise as two well trained hands and eyes having direct access to the area. Lastly, it is entirely possible to train in some IR techniques/procedures during a vascular/Cardiothoraccic residency. So you can be prepared and have an adaptable skillset.
long and short its far from dying. infact its one of the yougest surgical specialities with furthe niche sub specialisation developing i.e revasc, aortic, congenital, mitral, tranplant and failure. there is a move toward minally invasive and robotics too and cts also has a hand in endovascular work. Cardiology got too big for their own boots with what they could deal with and a lot of the interventions are what i would deem to be a brodge to surgery or plliative with surgery the the best curative long terms outcomes. Recent data has suggested that long term survival for lima to lad is greater than pci.

Who's waiting for a "So you want to be an internal medicine doctor" vid?
You don’t understand how long I’ve been waiting for this one 😭😭😭
