5:27 also now most interventional cardiologists do two years of fellowship - one for radial access-based procedures and the other for femoral access - basically, those that go to interventional cardiology fellowship either do coronary and structural fellowship (2years) or coronary and vascular fellowship (2years). So nowadays that it's super competitive and there's no combined internal med, cardio, and interventional cardio residencies like thoracic surgery - adding a chief year-post internal med or doing multiple fellowships is at least eight years post- med school without any breaks in between. so it's basically the same duration/commitment as pursuing neurosurgery.
I was so pleasantly surprised to see Dr. Ali Haider included and credited in this video! I worked with him in Massachusetts, assisting with in-house procedures. He's a darn good teacher, and he has inspired me to also consider following his footsteps into interventional cardiology.
my older brother is an interventional cardioogist. this is arguably one of the best specialties to go into nowadays because of net positive oppurtunity cost in any aspect really.
Our family friend is an interventional cardiologist. He is a really cool guy and I remember he used to show us kid how the stents and balloons work. However, he was always studying for the Board Exam of cardiology.
Your videos are literally so helpful in navigating medical school and how to get in. I’m currently a pre med student (take my MCAT two weeks from now so wish me luck 🥲). There’s so many unknowns as a pre med so you’re always my go to 🙏🏽
Great video! I'm a M3 at KSOM in Vegas and my mentor prior to med school was an interventional cardiologist. I remember being in the cath lab watching him place stents and impellas. He definitely worked a lot, but also has a family and is really passionate about his patients and medicine.
This is one of those specialties that I didn’t know existed. I wish I was in a point in my life where I could see myself going to medical school. Love the videos!
The rural interventional cards salary can be extremely lucrative (personally know someone who takes home 2 mil a year). Dude sometimes works from 7AM - 11PM but that’s by his own choice since he values compensation a great deal.
@@thephantomfx Just wow...$2 million in rural Alabama has the same purchasing power parity of living and earning as $10 million in Lower Manhattan as a Neuro/Spinal or Plastic Surgeon. 🤔
Awesome video! My cardiologist who happens to be an Interventional Cards who I also shadowed prior to medical school, has a very informal relationship where I can ask him anything. On my recent check up with him, 50% of the appointment was just me asking him about his field. I will note that I did ask him how his work life balance is. He turned away from filling out my chart and said, "I love this field and wouldn't choose another speciality, but this is the worst field to go into in terms of work-life balance." That being said, he is a private practice physician (group practice with his father and a PA) on top of his cath lab duties in a rural-ish area.
Did you find him through PCP referral or you searched for like "cards in my area" and he ranked high with the website? I'm trying to understand how would an IC in private practice get his patients :(
@@George-pu8hj IC and EP's can see general cardiology patients and often will if they are in private practice. They can just simply do the ablations/interventional Cath procedures themselves on those same patients. For this one specifically, I have been seeing his father since I was born due to congenital heart defect, just switched to seeing the son as he is more versed in newer guidelines and recommendations.
Oh I understand. Do you have any idea why is it so hard to find info on how to start your cardiology private practice as compared to something like dentists or chiropractors which seem to be everywhere. Currently a resident but already thinking about how I would get patients if I decided to start one on my own@@soundescape5413
For those who don't have time... It's basically IR but with the heart. (I'd wager that private practice clinical would make more when billing the insurance company and allows for more flexibility.)
Aspiring premed student here!! I’m a junior in high school but cannot wait to learn about medicine and human anatomy. Shadowing physicians and other hospital professions this summer!! Your videos are beyond helpful in informing the youth of today about the careers in medicine and helping us pick one to work towards!!💗💗
Keep an open mind. Throw yourself wholeheartedly into every field. The right one will call to you soon enough. The more you learn about other areas along the way, the better you will be as a physician.
I got diagnosed with a severe pulmonary valve stenosis and studying about these makes me really interested to be a cardiologist. Getting my valvuloplasty surgery in july :)
I work in cath lab like intervention cardiologist, because I'm just student but i love this work, we have daily 6-7 operation and i usually participate every operation and really enjoy. But i can only diagnosis coronary artery😁😁.
Your description of our field was very good. It is essential that any physician choosing to become a cardiologist carefully choose a training program that is not only very rigorous but which offers the opportunity to become expert and highly skilled in ALL aspects of the subspecialty. As you indicated, such programs are very selective and accept only the best students. It's never too early to develop and to perfect your study techniques in order to become one of those great fellowship applicants. If you succeed, programs will actually compete for you and that's a great feeling.
I should have added that the compensation you mentioned was not accurate in my own case. Though my income did vary in private practice, an average year's income was approx. $1.5 million and annual incomes of $2 million was not unusual. My practice situation enabled me to treat many pts. free of charge and to remit co-pays, etc. for others. One should give careful thought to whether the subspecialty is appropriate if the fellowship applicant is not a "high achiever" for want of a better term. Much more demanding than fellowship is keeping up with advances in the field while satisfying the demands of caring for the very sickest and most hemodynamically and therapeutically complex pts. If you're up to it, cardiology is by far the best subspecialty of Internal Medicine. Too bad so few have watched this excellent video.
I read an article saying interventional cardiologists get exposed to more radiation than any other group of medical professionals. Is this a huge concern ? How worried should a prospective candidate be of radiation risks, like cataracts or brain tumors ?
Amazing field that I’m genuinely considering, however the radiation exposure kinda scares me as I have a cancer history in my family. Do you have any information about this aspect?
Two years ago I was laid up with some bug for six weeks, fatigue, tiredness wiped out. Then after six weeks I had a chest infection for two weeks. After the chest infection my heart rate when standing went up to 180 bpm. This went on for a week then I woke with a pain in my chest and stomach and my heart rate dropped to 44 bpm, with escape and miss beats. I went to the Hospital they said this is normal. No way, your heart do not change like that suddenly. With the history of illness for the last Eight weeks. Some thing has gone wrong with my heart. But they will not listen. At the time I was doing keto diet, which lately have proved heart scaring. I firmly believe my heart problems is from this keto or I have had a virus hit my Heart. I'm 57 and before this I never had any heart problems. Now I'm fatigued, shortness of breath and sleeping a lot.
What's the difference between interventionist cardiologist and invasive cardiologist??? What's the difference between interventionist cardiologist and cardiologist surgeon???
My first stemi was the circumflex artery Dr, spent an hour rooting around in my LAD looking for the bifurcation that did not exist. never did figure out that I had a 3rd ostium. My heart went back to normal sinus rhythm on its own. He wanted to take credit for that. he closed with staples. I told him he was marginally competent he didn't care for that. 2 years later it happened again, pulled a different dr. took him 15 minutes.
Good evening sir i am right now in my med-school and aim to be a cardiothoracic surgeon but no matter how many articles i read , they all say one thing that its a Dying branch as interventional cardiology is very dominant in this new era.
