Can you beat Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot without the Community Board and Super Attack Tree skill boosts? This also means you can't learn new moves(except ones that are automatically unlocked by story progression; if they start off pre-lit up, they are fair game). I'd also have a challenge that involves not gaining food bonuses, but honestly that shit's so mandatory that it may as well be a requirement to play the game correctly.
Anything Fire Emblem related is always a good one for me. Xenoblade Chronicles(any in the series) I feel like have some interesting challenge run potential but they're also...LONG so I feel like maybe any of those would be good work on the background while doing other stuff if you wanna keep up with the once a month upload schedule. I'm not really sure what type of challenge to do with it but a game I love that I don't see a lot of people play or talk about(for reasons I understand) is Tokyo Mirage Sessions so ~quietly pushes that suggestion towards you~ I definitely second another commenters suggestion of the Bravely series. Those seem like they could get INTERESTING with challenges. Thanks for the video! It was lovely.

Only 16 minutes in so far and LOVING IT. Had to pause to chime that I never count FORCED usage against the runner in these kinds of things. Especially when most often they tried for AGES to get around it before giving up. If it's skippable in some form(within the rules) I expect the runner to do so but if it's not (at the time of playthrough I know sometimes things get discovered after because well...Gaming Community) than it's expected. Especially as you want to see if it's possible within the game mechanics without glitches or exploits it is VERY understandable you'd be forced into a situation like that tutorial.
What a mad lad! Absolutely loved this game and was sad to finish everything it had to offer. This made work so much better today, thanks for putting yourself through the ringer for us!
Absolutely insane. You might have been better off stacking Counterattack 30%'s on Alphen's accessory though vs the more balanced approach. Or at least keeping one around and swapping into it when needed mid-battle. While not super helpful on regular enemies it lets you tear through the larger bosses who have long attack animations that leave them open since the entire animation will count for the Counterattack effects letting you essentially double your damage. Seriously though mad respect and worth a subscribe.
full respect this was great one of my fav games honestly and to see a run like this is awesome great work. happy i came across this. there were parts i struggled with normally so to see someone do this is hype. you deserve a lot of subs just for this content. and your commentary throughout is reallly enjoyable

Tales of Arise was my first game on Ps5. I really love this game almost as much as Tales of Vesperia. Therefore I really enjoyed this amazing Challange Run of this game. Keep up that amazing work of yours

Awesome challenge video. One of the best I’ve seen. All in a month too?! Bro you’re mad, I never knew you could beat this game without artes. Also love that you mentioned Zestiria with some positivity. Most Tales fans hate it but I’m one of the few who liked it, maybe cause it was my first.
Besides the cool Challenge...this game is really something else when you want an anime like game to be more mature with its characters and behavior. I love it.
Honestly I don't count scripted or forced uses that have no way to be skipped as that will always be an auto fail. Unless some speedrunners or expoit is founded out I don't think they should count

Since most of your challenge runs so far have involved a lot of grinding when the going gets tough, I would like to see you try to complete a game with strict limits on how much you are allowed to level. As for which game, it looks like you haven't done anything with the Xenoblade series yet. I would also enjoy SMT5, Bravely series, or FF7 Remake.
@@MisterMelvinheimer Do you think so? Personally I feel like SMT5 has a lot of potential for it. You can completely null damage if you have good affinities for the bosses, and even if you are low level you can survive pretty much anything if you can maintain 2 stacks of Tarunda/Fang Break on your enemies.
@@warpuppy4528 definitely. Not impossible probably. 5 in particular has percent based bonuses to attack and def based on how much higher or lower lvl you are. Twas quite annoying for the reasons you mentioned.
Having a mandatory use due to a tutorial is not a run killer to my opinion. Wether you can work around it or not. I gor this game when it came out. This video makes me want to go back at it and achieve everything. This is a great video, along side the rest of your content. Keep up this great work.

The Mystic Artes Tutorial Fight doesnt count bc it a unskippable tutorial and it used for new players just getting into the game. In my eyes Challenge isnt failed due to a tutorial meant for new players
Great video for an AMAZING game. I *LOVED* this game so much. Especially the color explosions on some Finishers. Rinwell's was my favorite. Forget the name but you get the elemental colors and just *_* gorgeous. One of the only Tales games that I didn't only beat on Maniac (Or whatever it was called) but did so immediately after regular NG

Wow, great run. I was just plain dying to everything in chaos, even (ab)using artes, so I guess I suck. 😂 Also, for future games run challenges, I think we can all agree that rules don't apply to unskippable tutorials.
Haven't finished watching but I can't believe you attempted this. Just on the face of it, this seems like one of the hardest RPG challenges I could think of. The game isn't exactly easy to begin with and artes are such a key part of the mechanics.... Also, I seem to remember big XP dropoff like it seems grinding wouldn't be fast or super beneficial. No healing, low damage etc. You're a brave one! EDIT: God, I'm thinking about the swordmaster boss... Can't remember his name, but the one you fight multiple times. I remember him being quite a challenge even with artes
I don't think using the artes in the mystic artes tutorial is a fail. In these types of challenges, any scripted event where you're forced to do something outside of the challenge is OK by me

Hate to break it to you, but Kisara is essential immortal if you control her. She can perfect block EVERY ATTACK, including arena-wide DOTs like Vholran's Mystic Arte. After every perfect block, she gets a period where she's completely invincible, and if you can get the timing right, you can chain perfect blocks between attacks while sitting in large attacks and/or stage hazards.
Yeah maybe :) The problem with newer games is that less people have finished them, whereas people have a lot of nostalgia for older games. I'll keep trying different stuff and see what works. :)

@RPG Challenge Runs I'm amazed you did it!!! I would have given up. Not only is it difficult, but I love using my Artes, lol. That Ganabelt fight, dps check with no Artes, is insane, lol.
Pretty insane challenge. However, it appears that you're not aware that there is a way to swap on dead members with living member while in battle. It comes with drawbacks but can be very useful when bosses are on their last leg. This could probably be game changing here !
Yeah that's something I mentioned later in the run, during the 4th boss fight I believe. In most circumstances, swapping a party member in just resulted in them quickly dying, meaning access to 1 less Boost Attack. Gotta trust yourself more than the AI in this game, because they can be kinda braindead haha.

This was my first tales game I ever played I got the platinum now I’ve been playing tales of bersia it’s my favorite one but I’m 100 hours in after months of putting it on the back burning n I’m not even finished on that game plus that platnium is insane too lol
i suppose the most useful DLC’s in this run would have been 99 held items and the two that make crafting and cooking only need one of each material. but then each fight would be more a war of attrition than skill i suppose…. having 99 gels of each type is a bit cheap lol (and after seeing how much grinding you did, i dont think X2 exp would be a bad thing eithe…) for reference, the blob in the sewers is a huge ability check even in regular playthroughs. that fcker is one of the hardest bosses in the game mainly due to how spongy and magic happy it and it’s minions are for your limited party potential at the time, certainly in terms of main story bosses it’s up there as a major road block.
Honeslty, the QA problem doesn't just apply to this game. Some of the games from Bandai seems to have this issue. The Digimon series had oodles of them, even up to Digimon Survive.
Yeah they really need to sort themselves out! It's like if you spot a typo when reading a book - it's not a major problem but just comes across as a bit unpolished, like no-one even checked it haha.
Honestly I'd have been fine with the cosmetic only DLC, so long as you don't use the titles and arts that come with the Warring States, School, or Swimsuit outfits. As long as nothing from a paid DLC is used that has a mechanical benefit (SAO and SNX as well as the difficulty DLCs are free)
That's fair. TBH I just didn't want to get into a debate in the video about what is acceptable vs unacceptable DLC - much quicker and easier for the audience to understand if I just put a blanket ban on all DLC. But you're right. Cheers for the comment! :)

I first saw your persona 4 slime only run a while ago, and came back when I saw you do an ff12 and ff13 run. 12 and 13 were my first final fantasy games and i love them both. You don't see a lot of people do runs of those games, so it was a delight to see. Anyway, keep up the great work!
so the mystic arte tutorial, tales series in my experience effectivly hard code it so you need to pull it off once to actually have it done, and even in the rare case of you somehow killing the enemy, might just infinite spawn them. would have to look into this game more to know which case it is, but unless you can skip that tutorial, im fairly sure its hard stuck. one thing i can say that helps with dealing with enemys in this game, a tone of attacks like long lasting aoe attacks you can dodge into repeatedly to trigger counter attack over and over creating instances you can just ignore damage for large piriods of time, this game me through so much of the game because how spamable it was sometimes. now i could of missed this, but any particular reason of why only alphen? you never said any restrictions, and i know all the melee chars basicly are a good go to for control. not to mention dohalim and laws dmg output for there mechanics that boost from dodging and not taking damage well doing seccessive hits respectivly to match alphens flame sword dmg would probably be better when you can use them since you dont use any extended flame sword attacks because there artes, and if hes in the reserve he can be used as a knockdown boost attack that takes away his hp without needing to heal him for worry of dying(gotta love dumping all your hp for those flame sword attacks, and alphen is my theory why cure points exists)
30:34 - Any clue if knocking both beasts into low red HP and then trying to bushwhack them in succession (like Agni and Rudra from Devil May Cry 3) would stop the fusion and end the fight on the spot? I considered a similar idea for the SAO DLC to see if it was possible to stop Asuna’s sicko mode moment for beating Kirito first but I’m way too broke to keep up with gaming past the PS3, so I never got to live fire it myself.
14:17 the subtitles there are from the Japanese VO, hence them not matching the English VO's, I think? Also, I don't feel like a run is failed when the game forces you to use a basic/default mechanic and won't let you pass otherwise. It's got nothing to do with the difficulty of the run you're doing and is really just that, a tutorial. Doesn't matter, in my opinion. Like in the ff15 run where you literally could not pass a fight unless you warped across a fence... it's not like you used the skill for anything other than passing said event so it's fine.
This was the first Tales game i actually genuinely enjoyed and understood how to properly use combat. I hate the previous ones especially Zesteria..that game was so bad
I don’t think the challenge was failed for the scripted Mystic Arte at 16:25, why? Because it’s entirely automated. I know it sounds like I’m pulling this out of my behind, but even though you equipped Sonic Thrust, Demon Fang was used instead, meaning the game chose the Arte itself *for* you, solely for story flair, and not through player input. Essentially all you did was hit play for in battle cutscene. Does it sound a little bull? Yeah it does. But, I say a challenge isn’t failed if the game chooses options for the player, and this is one such case.
Huh idk if this would count but I understand no dlcs via exp power or defense boosts free lvl ups and I guess free heal items but should that rule include cosmetics mainly outfits?
Btw for challenges like this I never count the tutorials they are a simple pass as your unable to continue without doing them it's like trying to do a no death run then you run into a boss fight were to continue the story you have to die to progress a lot of people overlook stuff like that cause it's how the story plays out
“More like dark souls than a tales game” don’t underestimate tales games on the highest difficulty, specially a naked run with no kind of boosts or carryover. Also i loved Arise, LOVED it, but damn is grinding in that game horrendous. It takes forever. Even with the dlc boost.

I seem to remember that, when I played Besaria, I found the camera idiotically tipping up all the time, too. Maybe an idiotic idiosyncrasy of Tales games in general? Especially idiotic in brawlers (which are already the worst kind of rpgs without that). It wasn't that big of a deal for me, since the game is easy enough without good movement and without advanced combos. What killed the game for me was Velvet having that turn out of nowhere into a less interesting plot without any real consequence. Before it was nice, after it was worse and the turn was badly implemented. As to the forced use of an arte: It is obvious that one can't beat the game without artes. But as for a challenge run it is obviously not a fail, challenge runs are in the frame of the game while the question whether the game can be beat without artes is absolute and not limited by what is possible in the game. TL;DR The answer to the question in the video title is obviously "No," but the challenge is not over because the game forces you.
Didn't care too much for the game (Just beat it 2 weeks ago first time). But a couple years from now, I'll play it again but I'll main someone other than Alphen. Any recommendations on who to use?
If you like playing Healer classes, go with Shionne. If you like Tanks, go with Kisara. Rinwell is similar to Black Mage in FFXIV and can be quite complex/advanced. I haven't played much Dohalim or Law so I can't comment much on those. Hope this helps! :)

Absolutely love this game, it's a top-tier JRPG.
Since most of your challenge runs so far have involved a lot of grinding when the going gets tough, I would like to see you try to complete a game with strict limits on how much you are allowed to level. As for which game, it looks like you haven't done anything with the Xenoblade series yet. I would also enjoy SMT5, Bravely series, or FF7 Remake.

Smt 5 is great, but levels matter way to much for an smt game there. It would certainly be tough to do a low level run of that game.
@@MisterMelvinheimer Do you think so? Personally I feel like SMT5 has a lot of potential for it. You can completely null damage if you have good affinities for the bosses, and even if you are low level you can survive pretty much anything if you can maintain 2 stacks of Tarunda/Fang Break on your enemies.

5 in particular has percent based bonuses to attack and def based on how much higher or lower lvl you are. Twas quite annoying for the reasons you mentioned.

The Mystic Artes Tutorial Fight doesnt count bc it a unskippable tutorial and it used for new players just getting into the game. In my eyes Challenge isnt failed due to a tutorial meant for new players

Haven't finished watching but I can't believe you attempted this. Just on the face of it, this seems like one of the hardest RPG challenges I could think of. The game isn't exactly easy to begin with and artes are such a key part of the mechanics.... Also, I seem to remember big XP dropoff like it seems grinding wouldn't be fast or super beneficial. No healing, low damage etc. You're a brave one!
EDIT: God, I'm thinking about the swordmaster boss... Can't remember his name, but the one you fight multiple times. I remember him being quite a challenge even with artes
I don't think using the artes in the mystic artes tutorial is a fail. In these types of challenges, any scripted event where you're forced to do something outside of the challenge is OK by me

Hate to break it to you, but Kisara is essential immortal if you control her. She can perfect block EVERY ATTACK, including arena-wide DOTs like Vholran's Mystic Arte. After every perfect block, she gets a period where she's completely invincible, and if you can get the timing right, you can chain perfect blocks between attacks while sitting in large attacks and/or stage hazards.
Sounds like we need to do a Solo Kisara run next time!

Pretty insane challenge. However, it appears that you're not aware that there is a way to swap on dead members with living member while in battle. It comes with drawbacks but can be very useful when bosses are on their last leg. This could probably be game changing here !
Yeah that's something I mentioned later in the run, during the 4th boss fight I believe. In most circumstances, swapping a party member in just resulted in them quickly dying, meaning access to 1 less Boost Attack. Gotta trust yourself more than the AI in this game, because they can be kinda braindead haha.

This was my first tales game I ever played I got the platinum now I’ve been playing tales of bersia it’s my favorite one but I’m 100 hours in after months of putting it on the back burning n I’m not even finished on that game plus that platnium is insane too lol

i suppose the most useful DLC’s in this run would have been 99 held items and the two that make crafting and cooking only need one of each material. but then each fight would be more a war of attrition than skill i suppose…. having 99 gels of each type is a bit cheap lol (and after seeing how much grinding you did, i dont think X2 exp would be a bad thing eithe…)
for reference, the blob in the sewers is a huge ability check even in regular playthroughs. that fcker is one of the hardest bosses in the game mainly due to how spongy and magic happy it and it’s minions are for your limited party potential at the time, certainly in terms of main story bosses it’s up there as a major road block.

Honeslty, the QA problem doesn't just apply to this game. Some of the games from Bandai seems to have this issue. The Digimon series had oodles of them, even up to Digimon Survive.
Yeah they really need to sort themselves out! It's like if you spot a typo when reading a book - it's not a major problem but just comes across as a bit unpolished, like no-one even checked it haha.
I'm replaying the game and just now noticed the typo in the dialogues, they could have hired better translaters!
It was even worse on release - I wish I still had the screenshots!
Honestly I'd have been fine with the cosmetic only DLC, so long as you don't use the titles and arts that come with the Warring States, School, or Swimsuit outfits. As long as nothing from a paid DLC is used that has a mechanical benefit (SAO and SNX as well as the difficulty DLCs are free)
That's fair. TBH I just didn't want to get into a debate in the video about what is acceptable vs unacceptable DLC - much quicker and easier for the audience to understand if I just put a blanket ban on all DLC. But you're right. Cheers for the comment! :)

I first saw your persona 4 slime only run a while ago, and came back when I saw you do an ff12 and ff13 run. 12 and 13 were my first final fantasy games and i love them both. You don't see a lot of people do runs of those games, so it was a delight to see.

so the mystic arte tutorial, tales series in my experience effectivly hard code it so you need to pull it off once to actually have it done, and even in the rare case of you somehow killing the enemy, might just infinite spawn them. would have to look into this game more to know which case it is, but unless you can skip that tutorial, im fairly sure its hard stuck.
one thing i can say that helps with dealing with enemys in this game, a tone of attacks like long lasting aoe attacks you can dodge into repeatedly to trigger counter attack over and over creating instances you can just ignore damage for large piriods of time, this game me through so much of the game because how spamable it was sometimes.
now i could of missed this, but any particular reason of why only alphen? you never said any restrictions, and i know all the melee chars basicly are a good go to for control. not to mention dohalim and laws dmg output for there mechanics that boost from dodging and not taking damage well doing seccessive hits respectivly to match alphens flame sword dmg would probably be better when you can use them since you dont use any extended flame sword attacks because there artes, and if hes in the reserve he can be used as a knockdown boost attack that takes away his hp without needing to heal him for worry of dying(gotta love dumping all your hp for those flame sword attacks, and alphen is my theory why cure points exists)

30:34 - Any clue if knocking both beasts into low red HP and then trying to bushwhack them in succession (like Agni and Rudra from Devil May Cry 3) would stop the fusion and end the fight on the spot? I considered a similar idea for the SAO DLC to see if it was possible to stop Asuna’s sicko mode moment for beating Kirito first but I’m way too broke to keep up with gaming past the PS3, so I never got to live fire it myself.

14:17 the subtitles there are from the Japanese VO, hence them not matching the English VO's, I think?
Also, I don't feel like a run is failed when the game forces you to use a basic/default mechanic and won't let you pass otherwise. It's got nothing to do with the difficulty of the run you're doing and is really just that, a tutorial. Doesn't matter, in my opinion. Like in the ff15 run where you literally could not pass a fight unless you warped across a fence... it's not like you used the skill for anything other than passing said event so it's fine.

i would have suggested getting the devil arms but i doubt getting those would be possible but if you could it would give you the highest damage.

I don’t think the challenge was failed for the scripted Mystic Arte at 16:25, why? Because it’s entirely automated. I know it sounds like I’m pulling this out of my behind, but even though you equipped Sonic Thrust, Demon Fang was used instead, meaning the game chose the Arte itself *for* you, solely for story flair, and not through player input. Essentially all you did was hit play for in battle cutscene.
Does it sound a little bull? Yeah it does. But, I say a challenge isn’t failed if the game chooses options for the player, and this is one such case.
Huh idk if this would count but I understand no dlcs via exp power or defense boosts free lvl ups and I guess free heal items but should that rule include cosmetics mainly outfits?
Btw for challenges like this I never count the tutorials they are a simple pass as your unable to continue without doing them
it's like trying to do a no death run then you run into a boss fight were to continue the story you have to die to progress a lot of people overlook stuff like that cause it's how the story plays out
“More like dark souls than a tales game” don’t underestimate tales games on the highest difficulty, specially a naked run with no kind of boosts or carryover.
Also i loved Arise, LOVED it, but damn is grinding in that game horrendous. It takes forever. Even with the dlc boost.

I seem to remember that, when I played Besaria, I found the camera idiotically tipping up all the time, too. Maybe an idiotic idiosyncrasy of Tales games in general? Especially idiotic in brawlers (which are already the worst kind of rpgs without that).
It wasn't that big of a deal for me, since the game is easy enough without good movement and without advanced combos. What killed the game for me was Velvet having that turn out of nowhere into a less interesting plot without any real consequence. Before it was nice, after it was worse and the turn was badly implemented.
As to the forced use of an arte: It is obvious that one can't beat the game without artes. But as for a challenge run it is obviously not a fail, challenge runs are in the frame of the game while the question whether the game can be beat without artes is absolute and not limited by what is possible in the game. TL;DR The answer to the question in the video title is obviously "No," but the challenge is not over because the game forces you.

If you like playing Healer classes, go with Shionne.
If you like Tanks, go with Kisara.
Rinwell is similar to Black Mage in FFXIV and can be quite complex/advanced.
I haven't played much Dohalim or Law so I can't comment much on those.
