20:37 About the clepatra-esque boss, the thing that was happening is that she is one of the enemies that resists specifically damage inflicted by Charlotte, while being weaker to Jonathan's damage. Edit2: 35:50 Death is the same thing as I've mentioned for cleopatra, they change from a form where they deal extra damage and take less damage from either Jonathan or Charlottte, and the idea is to change back and forth between them both to keep the dps high but also to protect yourself from the potential damage.
Been watching Castlevania speedruns all weekend while ill and now I've been blessed with a Nyarly Castlevania upload after awaking from my slumber. Incredible work as always man! Also, in regards to Dracula's final form and his wing attack, the only consistent way of preventing it is to have Jonathan out with you to attack the other side, so you're typically doomed in this scenario in any solo challenge (no surprise considering this game's emphasis on the duo system). With that said you should consider a challenge in the future where you can use both Jonathan and Charlotte, but only with their starter equipment.
44:06 the Dark Rift spell wouldve been viable for this challenge if you made an exception for how it works, I think. It sucks in projectiles, making The Creature one of the easiest bosses in the game for Charlotte. And it only deals damage if its on top of the enemy, so if you placed it away from him, youd still have to beat him with the book to win.
Nyarly's back with a challenge run of my all-time favorite Castlevania game, and it involves best girl Charlotte smacking everything in the face with a really heavy book? Hell yeah
This video was so good it legit got me into a Castlevania video binge all of a sudden. I even got to watch that 7 hour full series retrospective floating around YT thanks to that. And as much as I also like Maria, I'm inclined to absolutely agree with you about Charlotte.
Nah, Portrait of Ruin is (or was) the strongest Death in the series. Why? Well postmortem he can brick your save, making your game unable to be completed. In fact it happens after you simply... skip cutscenes after fighting him. This makes game think you still fight Death, even when he is defeated so progress gets halted, mainly due to elevator not working. Sure, if you realise that you can just... reset the game but if you saved after beating death while glitch is active... you are simply screwed.
I was kinda thinking of doing a Charlotte only run without damaging spells and this has kinda dissuaded me a bit; congrats on completing this crazy challenge. I kinda wish you unequipped Jonathan for the last boss in the Nest of Evil since then you'd be fighting a Doppelganger of Charlotte instead (the boss is always whatever's considered your stronger character by the game, which 99% of the time will be Jonathan because of his better damage and defense), and it's also just pretty funny to see Doppelganger Charlotte try to attack with the Encyclopedia but completely miss since I guess its AI only expects the player to equip a proper tome. Otherwise, great run; glad to see more Castlevania on the channel against
at first i was confused why the encyclopedia dealt holy damage, but them i remembered; getting hit by the corner of a book is a pain that transcends all religions.
Well done! Also, I don't blame you at all for using the miser ring & hex edits, because without that boost in damage, it is very likely that you wouldn't have been able to damage Dracula's final form fast enough to win before his unavoidable wing crush attack drained all of your healing reserves. Without it, you'd have to resort to breaking the rules, & allowing Johnathan to join you as an aid to break through the attack, IF that would even work given the difficulty in hitting them with the encyclopedia. All in all, I'd call this run a completable run solely due to the hex edit & miser ring, but an impossible one otherwise. Well done in any case, though, since it required lots of skill despite that.
@@CB-L I'm chalking that up to him being too preoccupied with the war in 1944. Besides, the Morris family, which Jonathan is part of, is a branch of the Belmont clan, as is the Lecarde family, so it's not like it was entirely hopeless.

Hey Nyarly, your videos are awesome. They helped me learn about and eventually start playing Megaten. I’m currently going through smt3 for the first time and having a blast. Thank you for all the awesome content.
Im to lazy to read the comments to see any gameplay advice and I hope you dont take this as me being rude but here are a few things that could have helped with the playthrough Short hop jump canceling when attacking (Basically tap the jump button then the attack button it lets you move while attacking grounded enemies) Also back dashing out of attacks can help in a similar way I had an idea for fighting behemoth because I could have sworn you could duck under his tongue but you cant (Just tested this crouching under it and sliding twice will completely dodge it) I just started the challenge at when you beat behemoth and got to him by the end of the vid. Love your content and the castlevania vids a are fantastic.
Books don't land cancel, so doing short hop attacks isn't super useful. Backdash cancelling is extremely valuable though for improving attack rate and mobility with a laggy weapon type like books, though.

This is the second time I've binged finish watching your Castlevania videos only to have another one, the first in a year or so be released and catch it in the first hour. Neat.
If you don't think Vampire Killer is the best weapon in the game, which do you think it is? I think it's VK because even tho some weapons have technically better stats, the Holy attribute and its Special Attack, considering 90% of the enemies in this game are vulnerable to Holy, makes it top damage and come out really fast. I know the Claimh Solais has stronger ATK but it's also a lot slower and has no special power up, so overall VK still tops it.
@@sazabi888 Yeah dw, just felt it was important to mention. Dawn actually does the *reverse* where resistances are only counted if enemies resist BOTH elements. This is why Death Scythe is as good as it is in that game.
Fascinating challenge run, definitely one that fights against the game! I've always liked Portrait of Ruin - the regular dialogue updates in the menu were characterful, and as an old-school Sega Boy I appreciated that it references Bloodlines/New Generation, the only Castlevania to ever be released on a Sega console - but what does disappoint me about the game is how little it makes use of the WW2 setting. Other than the "Nation of Fools" portrait, with all the ruins in the background with a boss that'a giant ball of corpses as suitable subtext, there's scarcely any reference to it in the game. It frustrates me just how many opportunities for thematic events are missed. It's 1944 - in Romania! Dracula's castle is right on the Eastern Front! Just imagine if Charlotte and Johnathan had to sneak past a German patrol to get to the castle instead of just walking through the woods, or you get to the castle roof and there's a cutscene where you see a formation of Soviet aeroplanes try to bomb the castle thinking it's just a normal position before the vampire sisters fly up and use their magic to obliterate them. As the game goes on, you have to dodge around a three-way battle that develops between Russians, Germans, and the Castle's monsters as soldiers break in hoping to loot treasures, unaware that there's vampires eager to feast on them all. Dracula likes eating communists, all the red flags hide the bloodstains... Portrait of Ruin is good, but it could have been more!
Fun fact about Dagon: If you just swim up to the top of the water when he begins sucking you can just dive kick on his head for the entire fight and he can't do anything about it. Hell the spores he sends out are designed to attack you while facing him so a majority of the time you don't have to worry about those either.

Edit2: 35:50 Death is the same thing as I've mentioned for cleopatra, they change from a form where they deal extra damage and take less damage from either Jonathan or Charlottte, and the idea is to change back and forth between them both to keep the dps high but also to protect yourself from the potential damage.
The most powerful weapon of them all...

35:40 When he changes colors, his defense values change as well. His white form has higher physical defense, lower magic defense.
"I can show you how immature I am by doing this!"
Maturity doesn't matter, people will always be drawn to the "Johnathan! Charlotte!" spam.
5:46 Can you really call it a Portrait of Ruin Playthrough if you don't do this at least once in your run?
The thumbnail reminded me of Soul Eater. Nice reference, Nyarly.
The pen is mightier then the sword!
… well not actually, but it's cool that you can beat the game with a regular book.
Charlotte is still my favorite castlevania character.
I love her gameplay.
How humiliating it is for Dracula to beat up by a book
With no magic as well
Just a book to the head
The last hit wasn't even in the head. Charlotte whacked him between the legs.
This feels canon. This might be the reason _Charlotte being absent_ in the battle of 1999.
(Alucard, or Arikado, has no knowledge on Charlotte in GoS)
To be fair, Charlotte and Jonathan would've been in their 70s as of 1999, if they were even still alive.
Definitely possible but at least Alucard(Arikado) in GoS had no knowledge on Charlotte at all.
@@CB-L I'm chalking that up to him being too preoccupied with the war in 1944. Besides, the Morris family, which Jonathan is part of, is a branch of the Belmont clan, as is the Lecarde family, so it's not like it was entirely hopeless.
@@gmsloep One thing bothers me other than Charlotte is that how long Jonathan lived after PoR. I hope he lived long enough to train Julius as the last heir of VK but using it already drains life..
The thumbnail made me think this was a FFVII parody at first. Anyroad, great stuff and congrats! I liked the little visual details and appreciate you going for the the good ending.
That said, beating this game with an encyclopedia, while humorous and impressive, it wasn't your most impressive feat in this video. No. That honor goes to you saying the infamous "funny number" without adding on the oh so original, not at all tired and played out "nice" immediately afterwards. It is no exaggeration to say you are the first person I have seen not do that in literally several years. The best part? It feels like you did it unintentionally. 😌
Charlotte on a mission to single handedly teach evil out of Castlevania.
Gives "hitting the books" a whole new meaning.
Hmmm...his name is Brauner and he's an artist....and this game takes place in 1944. So basically you kill vampire Hitler in this game.
I'm so gonna get this game now
The thumbnail fits soooo well.
Charlotte is adorable in the thumbnail lmao
The cursor onscreen dealt more damage than the encyclopedia
Nyarly!! You got my nearly 40 yelled out because my mom heard "john""char" back and forth and she has ptsd from both my brother and i used to do that 😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤
The nation of fools map looks so chaotic because it is a town hit by a nuclear blast (you can see it in the background) and frozen in time.
Even Legion is made out of all the people who died in the explosion.
Considering when the game is set, it's more likely to be The Blitz than a nuke.
@calemr Could also be WW1 (artillery) bombing, since Brauner's real daughters died in that war.
Jonathan and Charlotte over soul and Maka is silly
Hey Nyarly, your videos are awesome. They helped me learn about and eventually start playing Megaten. I’m currently going through smt3 for the first time and having a blast. Thank you for all the awesome content.
Im to lazy to read the comments to see any gameplay advice and I hope you dont take this as me being rude but here are a few things that could have helped with the playthrough
Short hop jump canceling when attacking (Basically tap the jump button then the attack button it lets you move while attacking grounded enemies)
Also back dashing out of attacks can help in a similar way
I had an idea for fighting behemoth because I could have sworn you could duck under his tongue but you cant (Just tested this crouching under it and sliding twice will completely dodge it)
I just started the challenge at when you beat behemoth and got to him by the end of the vid.
Love your content and the castlevania vids a are fantastic.
Books don't land cancel, so doing short hop attacks isn't super useful. Backdash cancelling is extremely valuable though for improving attack rate and mobility with a laggy weapon type like books, though.
"It also has built-in AI-" The fastest way to immediately kill any interest in a product lmao.
Eh. It's not that big of a deal. I almost never use it
Honestly, it's not something that's seriously used with anything at all. It's there, sure. But I never use it myself, ever. Don't even see it in the side tab on my end.
I don't need my browser to have skins, themes, AI and all that bullshit.
I need it to direct me to the website I need to browse.
I mean really the biggest interest killer for a product like Opera GX should more be the question of "If this free browser with no monetization options to it is coughing up thousands of dollars to sponsor TH-camrs...how is it actually making a profit?"
Hell, given the recent debacle with Honey, I'm _extra_ suspicious about GX now
For all we know, there's a lot of shady shit it's pulling behind the scenes that has yet to have the whistle blown
Just use Firefox or Brave, folks
OHHHHH I was just thinking of suggesting this run today. Nice to see the Charlotte Book Bonk challenge is already done
This is the second time I've binged finish watching your Castlevania videos only to have another one, the first in a year or so be released and catch it in the first hour. Neat.
4:01 the detail in that Black Frost Portrait is ADORABLE
5:46 GunSwordGunSwordGunSwordGunSwordGunSwordmaster!!!
The DS games prioritize resists over weaknesses, so multi elemental weapons if they're partially resisted will ONLY do resist damage
This isn't true in Dawn of Sorrow, for the record.
@@wannabecinnabon I didn't know dawn didn't do this but I definitely knew portrait does
@@sazabi888 Yeah dw, just felt it was important to mention. Dawn actually does the *reverse* where resistances are only counted if enemies resist BOTH elements. This is why Death Scythe is as good as it is in that game.
Nyarly: The encyclopedia is the worse tome
The blank book: .....
The Blank Book is slightly stronger, but lacks the holy element that the Encyclopedia has.
your videos on castlevania got me into the series! thank you!
Video title needs to be changed to "...Only an Encyclopedia & some Slidekicks?"
Can nyarly beat castelvania with the power of a good education?
He did go to college.
That's a lot of hits on the first boss alone.
150 to be exact.
quality thumbnail
RAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH NYARLY CONTENT!!!!!!!!!
Johnathan! Charlotte! Johnathan! Charlotte! Johnathan! Charlotte!
Fun fact about Dagon: If you just swim up to the top of the water when he begins sucking you can just dive kick on his head for the entire fight and he can't do anything about it. Hell the spores he sends out are designed to attack you while facing him so a majority of the time you don't have to worry about those either.
Charlotte can't dive kick.
Dang, apparently those old Encyclopedia Brittanica ads were worth it after all
now we just need an ecclesia run, and life will be great. because shanoa is life
I only found your channel a few days ago from your Handgun Only Castlevania run, so this is definitely a fortuitous update for me!
Okay I may actually try out the Castlevania series now thanks to this.
Also great video Nyarly, brilliant as always.
book gives slash damage

...
i guess its some vicious paper cuts
top tier thumbnail
Absolutely banger thumbnail👌
I LOVE THE THUMBNAIL SO MUCH
THE SOUL EATER ENERGY IS DELICIOUS
