Very comprehensive! I’d just like to add a few points! First the point about spells being quicker to cast the longer your chain of actions. As long as you do not return to idle, this bonus is maintained. Once you run out of AG, you can string together dodges or jumps to keep your chain alive. As soon as you jump/dodge your AG will start to recover. Simply keep dodging or jumping until AG is full and you’ll be able to cast the high tier spells with a maxed out casting speed. This one is a bit misleading, it doesn’t reduce AG recovery speed as implied, but actually caps your max AG to half (rounded up). Fourth is details about cooking. You can press the pad button to get a detailed explanation of the effect of a recipe and view the character’s favourite meal effect in full detail.
Thank you for this. There is always something I'll not notice/know. I encourage informing me of such information. First Point. Excuse me sir you can do that!? (Goes to check.........you can!) Second Point. Oh really! Third Point. This is a Tales of classic of something not working exactly as it is written. Gotta love em for that. Fourth Point. I did not mention the touch pad button press. Thank you for pointing it out. I could not see a more detailed version of a character's favorite meal effect in the 'Cooking Effect Details' window (It does show up arrows and down arrows along with time changes for some of them though when hovered over.)
@@cardadcgt-buildingdecks No problem! Sadly these games don’t explain themselves well sometimes, so videos like this are always really appreciated! As for the favourite meal effect, most of them fit in that little window on the right, but Dohalim and Shionne’s get cut off and can only be read in the details screen. It took me ages to figure out Dohalim’s effect wasn’t just “Increase effect by 30% once duration” or whatever it gets cut off at lmao. Iirc, the Cooking Effect Details screen also describes the exact percentage it increases your stats, but I’m not confident on that one, just a hazy memory.
At least for understanding the mechanics that is the idea 👍(not needing to watch other guides). Builds/strategies/grind strats would still be worth looking up though. I provide links to such information in the video descriptions sometimes. Thank you for taking the time to watch!
Now this is a true combat "tips and tricks" video. Great depth without going to far into anecdotal or example weeds. Deserves more views. Reminds me of ye ole "legendary-authored" Gamefaqs text guides.
I’m late to the party, but I’ve watched about six videos kind of like this one. This video is above and beyond the rest. The best, most clear, concise, and informative of them all. Highly recommend to any newbs like me.
It is NEVER too late! What made my guide stand out compared to the other ones? Could you give a specific example (naming other channels is not necessary)? A lot of thought was put into how my guides are structured/presented so I'd love to get an example for what inspired you to leave this comment. Thank you for the kindest of words.
Fantastic guide! New to the series and doing reasonably well on hard, but I can tell I am not playing anywhere close to optimally and am relying heavily on items. This was immensely helpful since the game does not explain everything in great detail.
Nice! Sounds like you're already ahead of the curve. In 'Tales of' items seem to be necessary especially on their harder difficulties. Unless you're a speedrunner level of optimization fiend. Glad the video was able to help!
So I just picked this up after looking at it for over a year and this guide is both immensely useful for the keywords but also you have a unique charm I've yet to see. I genuinely laughed a few times due to your natural charisma. Kudos to you and your well done guide, a year after it was posted. Think I'm now ready to jump in and punch people in the face with Law once I get him.
Thank you! and 'charisma'? That is not a descriptive word I get. It is appreciated and I'm happy what I try to get across through the dialogue is noticed. Glad I'm doing something well/right 😂
Fantastic video, with Arise on game pass now I finally get to try it out. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain combat in such detail, super helpful!
Gamepass being a blessing in more ways than one. I was wondering how many may find their way here from that. Thanks for watching. Hope the video improved your enjoyment of the game.
I would absolutely love if you did this type of video for Monster Hunter World or Rise. That series seems impenetrable unless you have a history with it.
Just in case. You can't choose a boost attack and select a specific enemy. The boost attack always goes to the enemy you are targeting. I just switched my target to the charging boar. Called Kisara. Then switched the target back.
@@cardadcgt-buildingdecks makes sense. I got to the part in the video where you explain how to switch targets, and I kinda realized at that point thats probably what you did. Very thorough video by the way, I appreciate it!
@@IAmElectrospecter Thank you! I appreciate the comment. I think you're tied for the "What!? You can do that??" reaction happening that quick. There is a comment that mentions not realizing you can switch characters mid combat.
This is awesome and is super helpful. I have already played the game but I had no idea a bunch of this stuff were options so this will help me a lot in my second play through. Thanks!!
Perfect video for coming back for the expansion dlc. I miss the days where I have no qualms on replaying long jrpgs. I think I beat tales of eternia at least 4 times.
@@cardadcgt-buildingdecks That was the life back in ps1 era. Liking a game means playing it a lot. We weren't swamped by games and constantly chasing the fomo like we do right now.
I know im a bit late to be posting on this video, so i hope i dont get too many "necromancer" comments, even though i love playing as a necromancer in games 😂😂. Anyways, my reason for making this comment is because i would jist like to thank you so very much for making such a detailed breakdown of the combat and other mechanics in the game. Im new to the Tales series, but not RPGs or JRPGs in general so i had a bit of an eaiser time than a conplete newcomer, but even after watching other videos and reading other posts, i was having a little trouble with the combo system. Having a limit to the number of normal attacks before you go into a cooldown period, was new to me in these types of games so i looked for more help online and finally found this video and its easily the best video to watch for newcomers to the game. You have my deepest gratitude, my good sir, for taking the time and effort to make this video to help people like me. I rarely if ever, like and subscribe and all that, to TH-cam channels, but i made an exception for you and your page soley on this video. Please keep making more videos like it for other games. Maybe for Trials of Mana, FF7 Remake, and Scarlet Nexus, to name a few of the games ive started playing and could use some more info on lol. But seriously, thank you again for doing this video the way you did and keep up the noble work!
It is never too late to post a comment. I've seen decade+ old videos still getting new comments...AND being responded to by the channel owner! Also you are not alone with the combo system because previous Tales of games did not have 2 attack types to worry about. Like your normal attacks and artes that Arise has. Older games sometimes did limit how many attacks you could do in a row but there was no interweaving of 2 different attack types. Arise's system I'm sure was new to a lot of people. It is always amazing to know that what I wanted to get across by making these videos hits as intended because I would often run into gaps of information in the past when wanting to know something specific about a game. Videos would tell me the basics...which I knew but did not mention the little things I wanted to know. Thank you for your comment! As for your game suggestions. I know of each of them and I've thought about FF7 Remake. I currently have other games in mind first though.
Thank you and you are welcome! This is why I make the guides this way. I've run into the same issue in the past for various games. I would find partial information or not quite what I wanted to know.
There will be more! I just can't guarantee what game they will be for. Also, Ni no Kuni 2 (I have played it.) is not a title I would have thought to see for a video like this.
Holding block and attacking does not activate the "Stronger if activated while guarding" for Kisara. The shield glows white and the damage for the arte increases. Neither of these changes happen if she does not block an attack first. Thank you for watching and looking out for details. I want these types of comments.
@@cardadcgt-buildingdecks Actually the Guard Ignition aka the "shield grows white and damage increases" is different from what "Stronger if activated while guard" is referring to. Artes with this description are called shield strike artes, using them while guarding will turn them into a stronger version with more hits(for example Tiger Blade an originally two-hit arte will now deal 3 hits), some even come with additional effects/animations. You can try using Kisara's Lion Howl in training area, compare using it with and without holding the block button, the difference is fairly obvious.
so here's a good question as someone trying to get everything. My current accessories crafted count is at 22 but I have 23 in my current crafting list despite cross referencing my item list like 3 times (I'm guessing one of the ones I thought I crafted is just higher level loot than I thought I could get from quests/chests). Is there any in game indicator for what I haven't crafted yet?
I took a look. There are 25 different accessories. I did not find an indicator in game for which accessories have been crafted. I do have all craftable accessories in my craft list though. My main save had 19/25 so I crafted 1 of each and had 25/25. Zephyr's Ring is an accessory from a quest and can only be equipped to Law and will not be in the crafted list. So technically there are 26 accessories. Under Play Records it is specifically "Accessory Types Forged". In case it helps. Here is a list with each accessory and you can click them to see what items are needed to craft it and where to get them. game8.co/games/Tales-of-Arise/archives/340573
You can't make the party dodge the majority of incoming attacks. In action RPGs like this you usually can mitigate how much they get hit but they will still get hit often. Do not be afraid to use items and CP. They are meant to be used, but if you're having to use items practically every second there may be more you can do (sometimes character levels can be too low or you could equip accessories that reduce incoming damage). This game really wants you to use some of everything. Select the Strategy option in the main menu 40:59. Choose a pre-set that fits what you need. "Fight with moderation" is what I primarily used. "Focus on healing" will make them focus healing and keep away from enemies when their health is low. Press Triangle on any tactic (or look at the button key at the bottom for "Change Tactics Details"). Adjust when items or CP abilities are used by party members. At 41:30, look at 'Anyone KO'd'. Select the first option underneath it. Select "Keep away from enemy". This will make them 'Keep distance from foes while attacking.' This does mean they will dodge everything but it will give some breathing room at least. Set it to activate at certain HP thresholds by changing the "Anyone KO'd" option. You can see how to change between set tactics at 41:46 or select Strategy when you open the combat menu. Hope this helps even a little. 👍
Thank you. Start with Alphen or Law as they are the easiest to combo with. Many of their artes combo into each other well (especially the earlier ones). Try replacing a ground or aerial arte from the example combos in the video with a different one or pick 2 artes and see if they combo. It is trial and error. Faster artes will make comboing easier like Swallow Blade for Alphen as an example (I almost used it through the entire game). Here are a few ways to go about combos. Look at the "Combat example" timestamp. Use slow attacks while enemies are downed and faster ones when not or even start the combo with the slower attack. Use Boost Attacks when you find something is not in Break status and is about to hit you, Boost Attacks can extend combos (Add any boost attack at the end of any of the example combos to regain 3 AG and start the combo over on the same enemy. Do wait a bit cause of course you won't be juggling it while it is downed.), and if you have Overlimit you don't need to worry about any of that since AG is no longer a factor. Try these sets and see what you think: Alphen - Ground Attacks Lightning Thrust, Shockwave Slash, Thunder Fang Alphen - Aerial Attacks Mirage, Stardust, Luna Rondo Law - Ground Attacks Super Swallow Dance (Pay attention to the usable artes in the bottom right corner), Whirlwind Snap, Tectonic Punch Law - Aerial Attacks Death Blossom, Fang Bolero, Glimmer Dragon
@@cardadcgt-buildingdecks thanks man. I'll definitely do what you have said, though I'm still early in the game (Cysloden). Still a lot to learn and discover with this game. Thanks again this definitely helped me a lot.
Thank you! Check my "Kisara's "Stronger if activated while guarding" artes Tales of Arise - The Side Deck video" for something I missed and @Jamesaga added some interesting information I did not know.
Once you get used to changing characters mid combo, the game gets even more fun. I like to change to Rinwell when the count is high because she can charge up her strong spells so quickly and nuke everything. I never had so much fun casting spells in any other game lol
great video , started the game myself but man do i have trouble with dodge timing on diff enemies AND my attack/dodge decision...get stuck in animations and thrown around like a fottball T.T
😂 I understand. Focus on those quick artes that don't have long animations, basic attacks, and cancel into the boost artes to get that break status started. Getting hit by other enemies while doing those things and bosses?? You have to feel those out. It feels great once you get it down.
been playing this game on and off every now and then but I'm already at the 4th town yet I still feel like I don't understand the combat, like i'm just mashing buttons and skills... hopefully this video will help
I platinum'd this game, and at no point did I feel like I really GOT the combat system. I never understood why I was doing combos when I had one move that did more damage than a full combo
You are not wrong. It is possible to play that way in many games. It starts to put a game's balance into question, but ultimately it is up to us to play either efficiently or in what way we have the most fun. I've done the same as you in other games and it can be funny how broken a game is (once you figure it out). Your explanation is why I put "most" games on whatever the hardest difficulty is available. It forces me to really learn the systems and form a strategy (this does not work for all games as some difficulty levels are utter insanity like getting hit once and dying or shoot this enemy for 5 minutes from behind cover without ever moving).
Due to your question I added light drop rate tests from me and one I found on reddit (check above "Websites used as sources for various information:" at the bottom of the video description) It does look like drop rate ups on accessories do stack but battle chains and food drop rate up effects seem to be larger and more noticeable. If anyone knows of a more rigorous drop rate test please leave a comment.
Thank you for leaving a comment! 100% you don't need to know every mechanic! In fact that goes for every game. The majority of people would quit a game that is too strict/difficult with its mechanics. I've also played games that have really cool mechanics but the game is far too easy to need them.
Tales of arise combat mechanics is very easy to understand.. I don't even read the tutorial, but i understand the mechanics combat, elemental weaknesses , the strength of the characters.. @@Shr3tt I've played games for forever and got into jrpgs for their wacky systems. The experience is there but making videos? Yea not so much. I'll get there and thank you for the kind words.
The video it amazing i am enjoying the game and mechanics but what i feel that the game feels off for me is in the boss fights because the don't have break moment only down moment adchieved through Boost Moves which its fine but the faulire feeling starts when the Boost Move cuts your combo with the animation meaning it cannot be used a punishment extender that is where the fluidity of the game gets cut and feels boring all boss fight just looking for that small stagger tine while your arts feel meaningless weightless
I agree. The bosses are a weak point of this game. Since you can't juggle them in a combo. I hope they let us juggle bosses in the next Tales of game like the previous ones. We may be able to put them into a potential combo hell but that is more fun than what we got in Arise.
Mystic arts are the most difficult for me. I don't know what I do wrong but they work barely half of the time. Dosen't matter how hard i push the buttons :)
They can feel jank because they do not happen instantly. When in overlimit. Press and hold a button for an art (at least one hit from the art has to connect) and immediately hold a second art button. HOLD THEM. Hold them for dear life! With the most intense death grip you have given to your controller of choice. Then, you will succeed.
This was a great video for anyone getting into Tales Of Arise!~ 😊I've recently played through the game's main story and enjoyed the combat wayy better than Tales Of Berseria! I also finished all the side quests, cameo bosses, and finally the lvl 95 boss gauntlet!~ 😎
100% believable! We all miss some kind of information whether we like it or not. When making these videos there is always something I learn about that I did not know before making the video.
Congratulations and welcome to the Tales fold. I hope the video proved useful. As for being "pretty bad" congratulations again for joining the fold. That is how it was for us all.
Damn. Super awesome vid. Doubt I need to watch any other tales of arise tips and tricks videos after this one... Great job
At least for understanding the mechanics that is the idea 👍(not needing to watch other guides). Builds/strategies/grind strats would still be worth looking up though. I provide links to such information in the video descriptions sometimes.
Thank you for taking the time to watch!
This introductory tutorial was awesome!
Thank you for giving it a watch!
This is so well done, you've got a real talent for explanation and video editing. Thank you!
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words. I enjoy explaining games outside of youtube so bringing it here fits for me.
Now this is a true combat "tips and tricks" video.
Great depth without going to far into anecdotal or example weeds.
Deserves more views.
Reminds me of ye ole "legendary-authored" Gamefaqs text guides.
Thank you! and what is an example of an 'example weed'? I've not heard that before.
This is incredibly informative video about tales of arise i've ever watch. Nice voice, very well editing.
Wish you all the best!
Thank you! Hopefully other games you may be interested in will show up. I have no shortage of games.
Your editing style is very polished and easy to follow, great video!
Thank you! I'm especially happy it is easy to follow.
Just bought this game...i am loving it. I was super confused until i found this video. Thanks. Now i have to watch it again.
Good luck and enjoy! I had a great time with it. There is plenty to optimize if you want to. Thank you for watching.
I'm around 20 hours into the game. I watched the whole video and learned some new things!
Nice! Enjoy the rest of the game. Thank you for watching.
I would absolutely love if you did this type of video for Monster Hunter World or Rise.
That series seems impenetrable unless you have a history with it.
Now THAT would be a huge project. As I have no Monster Hunter history. Thank you for the suggestion.
1 minute into the video and I already learned something new. I had no idea you can direct boost attacks to specific enemies and I'm 50 hours in!
Thanks!!
Nice! That sounds like it will be an interesting playthrough. Always is with new knowledge.
@13:44 I died😂😂😂 that was great. Ty you for the in-depth video
I think you are the first to mention one of the jokes in this video. Thank you very much.
Thank you this is exactly the type of guide video I was looking for! Earned a sub!
Thank you! I hope more videos will prove useful for you in the future.
Great video. This was very useful, thank you.
Thank you for giving the video a watch! Glad it was able to help.
This is the best ToA vid out there for info, thanks for making it!
Thank you! and I hope more videos will be useful for you in the future. Is cool how many views this has gotten.
Perfect video for coming back for the expansion dlc.
I miss the days where I have no qualms on replaying long jrpgs. I think I beat tales of eternia at least 4 times.
WOO dlc!
Playing through a game 4 times...you are mad. Mad! Hope the video made the new playthrough smooth/enjoyable.
@@cardadcgt-buildingdecks That was the life back in ps1 era. Liking a game means playing it a lot.
We weren't swamped by games and constantly chasing the fomo like we do right now.
wow.. i just played ToA last week. This guide is explosive! subbed!
Appreciated! Thank you for watching.
I've searched, viewed and become disappointed by five-six ToA-videos now. This is what I was looking for. Thanks!
Thank you and you are welcome! This is why I make the guides this way. I've run into the same issue in the past for various games. I would find partial information or not quite what I wanted to know.
Incredible video my friend. I thank you for this combat tutorial. 5/5!
Thank you! I appreciate you giving it a watch.
More of this Please! would love to see something similar with Ni No Kuni 2 or another Tales of game
There will be more! I just can't guarantee what game they will be for. Also, Ni no Kuni 2 (I have played it.) is not a title I would have thought to see for a video like this.
This was great, exactly what I was looking for what a legend
Thank you! What information were you looking for that brought you here? I would love to know.
You sir earned a sub. Amazingly detailed video of this game. Thankyou.
Thank you for taking the time to watch. Hope you find more guides here that pick your interest now or in the future.
Kisara does not actually need to block for her shield strike arts, she just needs to use them while holding the block button.
@@akadonull6017 Thank you for the explanation. There is a Side Deck video up now explaining this about Kisara.
Beautifully explained
Thank you thank you. It takes a long time to figure out what I'm going to say and how I say it.
so here's a good question as someone trying to get everything. My current accessories crafted count is at 22
but I have 23 in my current crafting list despite cross referencing my item list like 3 times (I'm guessing one of the ones I thought I crafted is just higher level loot than I thought I could get from quests/chests).

Is there anyway to make your team dodge or move out of the way in combat. My part just face tanks all attacks by enemies and it's super annoying
wow! this is a guide! watched it all throughout. If you can man, can you show more of your artes setups? Coz I suck making combos. More power dude.
Try these sets and see what you think:
Alphen - Ground Attacks
Lightning Thrust, Shockwave Slash, Thunder Fang
Alphen - Aerial Attacks
Mirage, Stardust, Luna Rondo
Law - Ground Attacks
Super Swallow Dance (Pay attention to the usable artes in the bottom right corner), Whirlwind Snap, Tectonic Punch
Law - Aerial Attacks
Death Blossom, Fang Bolero, Glimmer Dragon

Oh I did not think to do that with Rinwell. Learning mechanics to games can really make many of them more enjoyable.

I’ve finally picked this game back up and I didn’t realize how deep the combat system is even though I’m almost done with the story
Yes. Very yes. There were a few things I did not even know until I started making this video.
great video , started the game myself but man do i have trouble with dodge timing on diff enemies AND my attack/dodge decision...get stuck in animations and thrown around like a fottball T.T
I hope it helps. Update us with some of your progress in the future!

It could happen. We will both see.
Thanks For the tips man. 😃
Thank YOU for watching.
This game is so far a masterpiece
Glad you're enjoying the game and I hope the video helped make it more enjoyable.
Does items buff stack? Like rare drop?
Due to your question I added light drop rate tests from me and one I found on reddit (check above "Websites used as sources for various information:" at the bottom of the video description) It does look like drop rate ups on accessories do stack but battle chains and food drop rate up effects seem to be larger and more noticeable.
If anyone knows of a more rigorous drop rate test please leave a comment.
Awesome video for all the new players on game pass or ps extra members. You can complete the game without knowing some of these mechanics ever :(
Thank you for leaving a comment!
100% you don't need to know every mechanic! In fact that goes for every game. The majority of people would quit a game that is too strict/difficult with its mechanics. I've also played games that have really cool mechanics but the game is far too easy to need them.
Some? I completed the game on normal without knowing any of the mechanics
Tales of arise combat mechanics is very easy to understand.. I don't even read the tutorial, but i understand the mechanics combat, elemental weaknesses , the strength of the characters.. I already max may level im playing at Hard difficulty i already platinum the game.. Tales of arise combat mechanics is a beginner friendly if your a fan of a rpg games
Not new to the Tales of games I see. Thanks for giving the video a watch.
thanks for a detailed guide. i missed some of the mechanics due to skipping lol

Other 'Tales of' games could happen in the future.
@@cardadcgt-buildingdecks i second that! I was actually looking for a berseria video on your channel. This was so well made, I thought you would have done this a long time already
I have the same problem but I don't like playing anyone besides rimwell anyways so I hardly get to use them ever.
bro made Arise combat bible respect
