Hoping Zwift will upgrade this to medium / high graphics profile in future updates. Should be able to run these, though not ultra. Would need an Apple TV 4k running Mx chipset. I'm hoping that they release that in 2023 in parallel. Not holding my breath. I'll be upgrading from 4k gen I to get the remote and cross my fingers for the graphics.
I bought the new Apple TV and needs this update for Zwift. Kinda wish Zwift would test this when the products are in development and offered at the same time as the product is released like other vendors do. This is why Apple has a partner program with a developer program.

I realize this isn't the place to compare the PC vs ATV 4K, (sorry about that) but I'm only sharing my experience of what's more important, just riding, graphics quality, or is it both? I started riding with Zwift in 2021 on the ATV 4K (2017 model) and was pretty happy with it, until I saw another TH-camr riding and couldn't believe the details on his PC version of Zwift. The riding surface, shadows, textures, dust etc looked so good, I wanted some of that. :) So I set up an Intel NUC RTX w/2060 (tiny PC), cranked up the graphics, and started to enjoy. My Wahoo kept disconnecting BT so I got an ANT+ dongle and that solved that. The PC always seemed to need an update or reboot before I could ride. (Maybe I wasn't riding enough?!) Not a big deal, but the ATV was, and always is, ready to go. Also, sometimes the PC's fonts are hard to read on TV (even at 175%) until you get right into game. No big deal, just the initial load/password screen. Overall, the "just ride" experience of the ATV is nice, and I too wish we'd get the best graphics the ATV 4K 2021 offers, but I don't think it's that easy to do, and takes the dev team time to work out issues, bugs, etc. I'm not holding my breath on quality improvments, but I swear my ATV 4K (2017) looks better in 2023 than it looked in 2021. Road surfaces look better, and effects seem to be improved. Am I imagining things or is that the case? Has the Apple TV graphics quality gotten better over the years? If so, maybe there's hope for the "new" ATV 4K 2021!

Daughter bought the Apple 4k (Model A2169) for my birthday in May 2022. It’s taken some getting use to after I had been zwifting on my iphone for 7 months (mirroring to tv). One thing to know is that it doesn’t display properly on older 720p tvs - the outer edges are cut off so I can’t see the time on top or the elevation % on the right side or following riders at bottom edge. I’m going to be buying a new tv or monitor soon. And yes we’ve played with all setting on the tv and apple
Thanks for this review, I’ve just bought the 2022 ATV 4k 128GB, and yes the graphics are a bit meh, but it still does the job. Hoping they do increase the graphics though… but… it’s still better than my 5yr old MS surface, running in 720p!
Love your videos - Curious what the temperatures will be when running Zwift without a Fan - especially if Zwift gives it a higher graphical profile. Will you be doing a test if Zwift changes the graphical profil for it ?

Thanks for the video. I currently use Zwift on an ipad but the small screen is hard to read. I'm not very technical but am I right in thinking that all I'd need to do to use an Apple is to buy a computer monitor/display and the Apple TV device, and that's it? That the Apple TV just connects to a monitor with a video cable or similar, and the only other cable it has is a power cable? Sorry for the really basic questions, I don't understand this tech at all. If that's all you need, is there a specific monitor (or type of monitor/specifications) that I should buy to pair with the Apple TV? Thanks in advance!
Correct. The Apple TV will simply connect to a tv via HDMI cable. Download Zwift from the Apple TV App Store. Login and ride. Any of the modern TVs would work with the Apple TV. You just need to get an HDMI cable with it and you should be all set to go. Your smart trainer should connect directly to Zwift on Apple TV and you should be good to go.
So I can use my regular digital TV, hook up via Apple TV and Zwift runs as a native app on it? Currently using iPad mini running Zwift connected via HDMI to TV. This sounds better, thanks

My 2021 apple tv 4k is now running a smooth graphics since zwift last update, i cant remember which version it was first updated, but my old samsung 1080p TV is way better and more detail with all the numbers and fonts letter, the avatar is alot smoother also…
You can get a palm size small Bluetooth keyboard and use it to control the PC. Amazon has a lot of them and works well. I had one for a while and it did a decent job.
Does anyone have any experience running Zwift through AppleTV on an ultra-widescreen monitor? I have had to relocate my set up away from the AppleTV equipped Tv indoors out to the garage using an iPad. I was thinking about getting a monitor and AppleTV on my turbo desk and wondered if it would work with an ultra-widescreen monitor.
The Apple TV box will output a video signal intended for 16:9 screens. So the ultra wide monitor will have to adjust its ratio by zooming in or cutting off part and distorting the picture in doing so.
How have you connected so many devices power, cadence, HM and control to Apple TV without using Companion? Currently my ATV can’t find my Tacx Smart Bike?
Make sure nothing is using the Bluetooth signal on your tacx bike. The tacx bike broadcasts power and cadence. So you should be able to connect it to ATV as power, cadence and controllable trainer. You should have one Bluetooth channel left which you can use for HR.
@@SmartBikeTrainers Hi thanks for the response, nothing else is connected to the Tacx, bizarrely the bike connects to Zwift on my iPhone and iPad instantly just doesn't like the ATV? No other devices are using the ATV's bluetooth. I have spent hours trying sort it, works ok with ZC via my network. ATV updated to latest build, Tacx bike firmware updated, Zwift updated. I know I can mirror and use Zwift but it the Tacx should connect directly to ATV? Very frustrating.
@@pete1927 Looks like your Tacx is BLE compatible since you are able to connect it to your phone and ipad, I would make sure the phone/ipad are disconnected from Tacx. maybe turn bluetooth off on these devices. Also, did you allow Zwift to use Bluetooth when you first installed it on Apple TV? If not or can’t remember, I would uninstall Zwift on your Apple TV and reinstall it and make sure to allow zwift to use Bluetooth on your ATV.

You do not need any subscription to use the Apple TV other than a subscription to Zwift itself. The Apple TV is a device on its own and different than the Apple TV+ which requires a subscription.
I believe they have not. Developers need to get their hands on the new hardware to update their software. Also, from my experience with RGT, I didn’t find the PC version to be that much better from graphics standpoint.
The latest ATV4K(A15 chip) gets 45fps on High quality setting when running RGT. For comparison, my og ATV4K(A10 chip) gets 8fps on High quality setting
The KICKR Core connects as power, cadence and controllable trainer as one connection. This leaves you with another available connection which you can use for a heart rate sensor.

@@XX-is7ps you should be able to have a BLE headphones paired along with your trainer and HRM. The remote and headphones don’t count against the two Bluetooth limitations they have in apps.
Yes! Open the companion app on the watch and phone and your good to go. Might take a few tries but it works for me and the wife everytime. Just make sure you install the app on the watch.
3:45 no it is just right. no laggy screen switching or long loading times.. the fire tv's suck at that.. and i will never go back to this.. simply a pain in the ass.. apple is expensive but worth it.. plus you cant ride cheaper on zwift.. :D
as much as I'd like to be annoyed with Zwift for not having improved graphics profiles for this device on day one, as someone who works in a Lab where we test Apple (and other) devices, I completely understand why they haven't done it. Apple is *extremely* difficult to work with when it comes to getting hardware in advance. To the point where it's almost impossible. Really. If you want to point blame at someone for the lack of support for the new Apple TV device, point it at Apple, not Zwift. I'm sure it will happen at some point, but it's probably not the highest priority with the development staff.
From talking to different people, development for Apple TV isn’t the smoothest and it has its challenges. It’s not only Zwift but other game developers as well. Either way, the hardware seems capable of running games at higher resolution now and it will be interesting to see how developers take advantage of it.
@@SmartBikeTrainers Agreed - I suspect in the broader scheme of things, Zwift on ATV is probably a very small niche of the overall customer base for both products. Priorities ?
Which Tacx are you referring to? If your Tacx broadcasts cadence, then yes you can pair it as power and cadence and pair an HR monitor. If you have a separate cadence sensor, then you will need to use the Companion app pair all three devices.

apple makes some great products. but then also makes some very weird choices. it's 2022 and no USBc output?! the apple tv is very portable. I've a portable monitor but I can't plug them together. how ironic.
@@SmartBikeTrainers I understand but it would be way more versatile would it have usbc to connect with portable monitors. And indeed a cheap way to get a good zwift setup. As a reference, in Europe, the base ipad air 5th gen goes for 840 dollars (without any accessory).
Good point but it's an Apple TV, and most TVs have HDMI not USB-C ports. It's probably a $12 Amazon adapter to get you there. The remote is USB-C, maybe the device will be at some point, too.
@@SignaComputerSystems the portable monitor draws power from the usbc supplier which would be the apple tv but hdmi does not carry power. it really has to be a usb-c out with some power delivery.
I wonder if you have Bluetooth disabled for Zwift on the Apple TV. You can check that in Apple TV under Settings > Privacy > Bluetooth and make sure Zwift is allowed to use Bluetooth.

That was data from my iPhone 13 Pro. Same A15 chip so looked it up on Zwiftalizer to see what profile Zwift assigned to it.

Depends on what profile Zwift decides to assign to the new Apple TV. But the iPad Pro has a more powerful processor.

As long as the connections (power/cadence/controllable) coming from the same bike or trainer, then it is counted as one.

Help! Just rode 1 hour on new TV & Apple TV. At the end there was no way (that I could find) to END / SAVE ride! Furious!
Once you are done, just press the menu and then you should see option to end your ride.
Back/menu button is your friend. :)

Zwift updated the profile to match the profile on other Apple TVs. Nothing specific for the new processor.

Apple TV started as a hobby for Apple and I still think it’s still a hobby for them. Great little device though for a TV.

And indeed a cheap way to get a good zwift setup. As a reference, in Europe, the base ipad air 5th gen goes for 840 dollars (without any accessory).
Good point but it's an Apple TV, and most TVs have HDMI not USB-C ports. It's probably a $12 Amazon adapter to get you there. The remote is USB-C, maybe the device will be at some point, too.
@@SignaComputerSystems the portable monitor draws power from the usbc supplier which would be the apple tv but hdmi does not carry power. it really has to be a usb-c out with some power delivery.
Bluetooth limitation is annoying as f
You can't connect unless you have an apple computer or phone. Spent hours and finally found out from calling Apple. Ugh. So back to my Android phone.

I wonder if you have Bluetooth disabled for Zwift on the Apple TV. You can check that in Apple TV under Settings > Privacy > Bluetooth and make sure Zwift is allowed to use Bluetooth.
