- Can you have oatmeal when you have diabetes? That’s a really good question: no matter how healthy oats actually are, in some cases, you may still notice that they spike your blood sugar levels. But why? Let's find out!

Oats have a glycemic index score of 55 or lower when prepared with minimal processing, which makes them less likely to cause spikes in blood sugar levels. Half a cup of oats contains 52 grams of carbs, and I know that you may not like what you hear here since it’s a lot. However, it is important to consider that about 8 of these grams come in the form of fiber. And fiber has been shown to have significant blood-sugar-reducing properties.
Keep in mind that The American Diabetes Association notes that adults should eat at least 25-30 grams of fiber each day, but most people don’t even come close. And a serving of oatmeal adds 8 grams of fiber to the diet, making it much easier to reach dietary recommendations. Fiber-rich foods like oatmeal may also help keep you feeling satisfied for longer.
However, oatmeal can be made of different types of oats, and when it comes to blood sugar management, they are not all created equal. It’s really important what kind of oatmeal you choose. The best options are old-fashioned or steel-cut oats. They contain a higher amount of soluble fiber that slows digestion and helps better regulate blood sugar.
But what about those blood sugar spikes after eating oatmeal? Well, there’s a chance that it happens because you choose the wrong type of oats. What you really need to avoid is processed oats, instant oats, and cereal bars. These are highly processed, which means they are digested faster, and the blood sugar increases faster as well. Also, instant oatmeal often has added sugar and other ingredients, so it’s a great possibility that you’ll consume too much of them at one time.

Dont trust anyone !!! Trust your glucose meter.
I understand what you're but sometimes the meter the don't show up the right reading so it's better you take some good advice and most of all God is the best for us to put our trust in He gives the right knowledge more than anything else
It would have been nice if God help people not get diabetes.
Maybe if you trusted someone other than yourself, you wouldn't have diabetes in the first place. This video is full of good recommendations. He knows what he is talking about and if you learned a thing or two then all the better. And it didn't cost you a cent to watch it either. Maybe if you got off your ass and started exercising, you wouldn't need to be glued to your glucose meter. ..and maybe work on trusting people a little more.

@@johnc3403 🤣🤣 really? Gee..🤔 kinda remember in the 80’s/90’s And doctors agreed.. fat is bad..
I put protein in my oatmeal and some butter. For protein I add wallnuts and I add chiaseed and flaxseed, also for fiber. That makes the spike much lower.
Really? How much lower?🤔
@Solo-_-.. Actually, it didn't spike at all.
@Solo-_-.. Actually, it didn't spike at all. And I forgot to mention I add lots of cinnamon too.
I like to add kefir to mine.
You can eliminate the glucose spike from oatmeal if you add some healthy fat from nuts or cream, some protein powder, and even mix in some soluble fiber powder.

I soak mine 24 hours in yoghurt. I then have it with berries, add cinnamon. My reading is under 5 before I have lunch.
Thank you so much for making this easy
I had a bowl of steel cut oatmeal with banana, my blood sugar shot up to 190. I'll never eat oatmeal ever again
May be the banana. A diabetic shouldn't be earing bananas like that.
No blood test?
A simple Yes or no
Yes, but avoid instant oats as they will spike your sugars very quickly. Steel-cut oats are best but take a long time to cook. Old fashioned or rolled oats can be OK in a pinch.
Overnight oats. 💥
You people don't want people to eat nothing geese
😂For reals some time I wanna give up
I definitely am struggling and sometimes I make bad decisions because I don't know what to eat!
Me too 😢
goose
Eat any animal product except for the milk part of dairy (butter fat is healthy and good). Eat any plant product that is not a seed, grain, fruit or root. Cant go wrong as stated. I think the word you wanted was Geez
I'm agree with you
It is questionable if ANY grain is human food for anyone.

Farmers will use whole grains to put fat on their animals, yet we are supposed to eat multiple servings of the same thing and be healthy? Damn right I am a denier of big food funded nonsense
Oatmeal beneficial for people with diabetes, only if they eat it instead of something worse.Better of with eggs and bacon, no sugar spike with that.
One strategy I've seen discussed is to eat protein and fats just before consuming carbs. It's supposed to help mitigate the glucose spike.
@@WadmanPit doesn’t
@@WadmanP Much simpler to just not eat the unnecessary carbs in the first place
if adding fibre to a poison, can we make the poison to a healthy thing?
To them.. yup🤣

berries are not sweeteners :)
Do throw it in the bin, don’t eat it … simples

Ahhh, fat free milk has more sugar than low fat…fat is okay, we need it. Just depends what type.
use the cream and forget the milk
Can I have grits for breakfast if I'm a diabetic cause I love grits
No
Why use low fat milk? Surely full fat will spike insulation less.
Fat actually helped me keep blood sugars under control.
you're mentioning instant oatmeal with added sugars. Quaker 1 minute instant oats in the large round container has no added sugar.
Apparently, the processing which makes oats faster to cook also dramatically raises its glycemic effect. For me, this was on the order of 50-70 points even two hours postprandial (with added Benefiber, Ceylon cinnamon, and a glass of correctly diluted ACV!). I'm now experimenting with regular slow cooked oats that have been cooled in the fridge overnight.
@@WadmanP i now eat Quaker quick 3 minute steel cut oats and my A1C went from 6.1 to 5.3
@@JxT1957 5.3? That's awesome! That means you can very occasionally enjoy a treat without feeling like sugar is going to shoot from your eyes.
25 carbs in one cup cooked with nothing else. Peter Paul Almond Joy is 26 carbs for comparison.
Low-fat milk, really?
UGHHH fack helpful but not helpful lol it just makes my life harder. Idk what to do.
🤣🤣🤣… nope.. a suitable meal plan for diabetes.. is.. no oatmeal
