The Budapest Chain Bridge, officially named the Széchenyi Bridge in memory of the Hungarian statesman István Széchenyi, (in Hungarian Széchenyi lánchíd) is a suspension bridge that crosses the Danube connecting Buda and Pest, the western and eastern parts of the city of Budapest, the capital Hungary. Designed by the English engineer William Tierney Clark, it was the first permanent bridge built in Budapest over the Danube and was opened in 1849.
It is anchored on the Pest side of the river by Széchenyi Square (formerly Roosevelt), next to Gresham Palace and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and on the Buda side by Adam Clark Square, home to Kilometer Zero and the bottom end of the funicular leading to Buda Castle.
The bridge was named after István Széchenyi, who supported the idea of building the bridge, but is most commonly known as the Chain Bridge. At the time of its construction, it was considered one of the engineering marvels of the modern age. It has acquired an enormous significance in the economic, social and cultural life of the country, just as the Brooklyn Bridge has in New York and in the United States of America. Its wrought iron decorations, as well as their compositional balance, make this bridge one of the most beautiful industrial monuments in Europe. It became a symbol of progress, national emancipation in the 19th century and a bridge between East and West. The main financier of the bridge was the Aromanian Gheorghe de Sina, known as the "banker of the kings", honored on his body by two large brass bas-reliefs (with the name, coat of arms and explanatory text) applied to the pillars at the ends of the bridge. The Chain Bridge connected Pest, economically and socially dominated in the century. 19 of the very prosperous Macedonia Romanian community (Grabovschi, Argintarul/Ëötvös, Sima, Em. Known in antiquity as the northern border of the Roman Empire, the river crosses ten countries: Germany (7.5%), Austria (10.3%), Slovakia (5.8%), Hungary (11.7%), Croatia ( 4.5%), Serbia (9.4%), Bulgaria (5.2%), Romania (28.9%), the Republic of Moldova (1.7%) and Ukraine (3.8%).
Its watershed covers nine other countries: Italy (0.15%), Poland (0.09%), Switzerland (0.32%), Czech Republic (2.6%), Slovenia (2.2%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (4.8%), Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania (0.03%) and Kosovo.
