You folks are hillarious.😂..the way you pronounce Lángos! I'm a Hungarian-Canadian living in Holland! My dear hubby and family were blown away by my Hungarian country cooking. Thanks for the video!
Meggyes mákos was a good pronunciation. So proud to see my home city on your channel! 😊
Oh, wow! Thank you so much! That means more than you know! And thanks for watching!😊
My grandmother on my dad's side was from Budapest. She loved to bake! I know why I love pastry, so much and all those flavors! TY.....and Natalie, you always look so beautiful, Matt, too! ❤😊
As a Hungarian, I care about what foreigners think about our food, so I watch a lot of videos in this form, but you are in Top3.
Wowww! Thank you!! That means a lot! We really enjoyed the Hungarian cuisine and hope to make it back to see more of the country! Thanks so much for watching! 😊
@@AdventuresofMattandNat The countryside is much more exciting and the food is more authentic than in Budapest. I would recommend the northern shore of Lake Balaton and the Danube bend, Esztergom, Visegrád, Szentendre, they are close to each other and to Budapest. ( 1 hour by any public transport )
Pálinka that is less than 50%alcohol is not serious stuff, it's made for tourists I guess!
Unikum is basically Jagermeister for grownups. It tastes like medicine because it originally is. It is an herb liqueur. Most Hungarians keep some at home in case of upset stomach. It does really cure it. The way it became a popular drink is, it could be taken to places where alcohol was forbidden, because it's "medicine"
Matt, you ate the lángos perfectly (without a knife and fork)! Nat, you are adorable ;)
Haha… Glad I passed the lángos test! Lol… And we’ll just have to forgive Nat!🤣 Thanks for watching!
The one universal dish in every country, dessert! Great video guys, prayers for your father Natalie
Hahaha AMEN to that! 👏🏼🤣
awww thank you so much 😭🥹💗 Truly means more than you know! We appreciate you watching & being on this adventure with us!
Can I just say, after watching a few travel influencers, you guys are in my top 5! You are actually funny, informative and your videography is fantastic! Thank you for your fun, intelligent content!

Aw... Thanks so much @Indianinthemachine!! That means more than you know! Thanks for watching! 😊
I ate the chicken paprikash at that exact restaurant, and it was the best dish I had in Europe in 4 countries on my trip. Highly recommend!!!
Yesss!! It was SO GOOD, right?? Thanks for watching!
I am glad that you came to Hungary, we look forward to seeing you!🙂
Loved your stroll through the eateries of BUDAPESH ! The Langos flatbread elephant ear looked delish. The Hungarian beer looked tempting too. Another fun video. 😂

This adventure was amazing, my dear!! I loved. That "pizza" with a lot of cheese, so delicious, got into my checklist 😍😍🥰🥰
Hello from Gatlinburg TN Smoky Mountains Park Kiddos! Looking great as always!🏞️🌄
the expression on Matt 's face after drinking the herb beer he was thinking geez
🤣🤣
Pálinka is served in a small shot glass because usually people drink it in 1 go,like a shot,it was not intented to sip for minutes but to empty the glass in seconds😄
Matt.... happy wife happy life ice cream 🍨🍦 is a must
Speaking as a man with a menopausal wife the life you save may be your own lol
This vid just came on time!! Going to Budapest this weekend. Cheers mate
Thanks for watching! We hope you had a great time in Budapest!😊
Budapest looks lovely! All the food looked tasty, especially the chimney cakes.

Aw, thanks for watching Dan! Glad you enjoyed it!😊
Hi Matt & Nat. ( I’m Hungarian ) & you guys doing great with the pronunciation . ( somloi galuska, meggyes retes) 👍
Wow! Thanks so much! That means a lot! We were really trying, but my Southern American accent doesn't always do well with foreign languages! Lol... Thanks for watching! 😊 -Matt
Nat your gorgeous! I love that as you travel the world you still have amazing classy style ❤
I never get tired of seeing all the different foods you both try lol The buildings look so pretty! In Canada we call the fried dough beaver tails they come with different sweet toppings you might of tried it in your Quebec video.
LOVE YOU GUYS😀
The food actually looks amazing. Great food tour video.
It really was! We didn't really know what to expect, but it was great! Thanks so much for watching, Brent!

It was the very first video I watched from you. You are so funny and positive. I wish you all the best. Enjoy your travels!
I'm from Nebraska and I miss it a lot and I get homesick
You had so many yummy things in Budapest.
The chimney cakes look like a fun option.
chocolate covered cheese curds sounds gross but it looks good.
leaves, medicine and essential oils yum haha xx
Pálinka is not below 50 degrees... at home it is 55-60 degrees. :)
Ahh... That makes sense! I guess like our whiskey here in the US. Thanks for the info and for watching! 😊
I always have room for ice cream 😅 thanks for the suggestion Nat! And you deserve it too 🤗 love these videos!
🤣🤣 Thank you!! lol… And thanks so much for watching!🥰💕

@@AdventuresofMattandNat 🙂🧁💖
Subtitle your vids, "Eating Across the World"...absolutely love viewing you enjoying the various desserts and foods and giving your reviews. Getting to eat/live vicariously is great. The scenery is nice, too.
P.S. Really like your choice of music to accompany your travels, also.
Actually your pronounciation is pretty good considering you only just arrived :)
Let me share some additional info on the stuff you guys tried, maybe it will be helpful to some people:
1. Gerbeaud is an iconic place. Imagine it as the place where stereotypically the old, elite ladies went to hang out to enjoy some fine things in life - and I don't just mean cookies. There is a long time urban legend that in those times if you were a handsome young man, and bought a certain cake, only ate a certain part of it, and left the fork on the plate in a certain way (there are several versions of the story), then eventually one of the waiters reached you with an address, where you had to went to... well.... offer some company to one of those old, and rich ladies on a financial term, if you get my meaning. But nowadays it is "just" one of the classiest place for deserts with a tradition they are proud of. You can be sure it will be really good quality stuff, but it will cost you too (expect ~ 2-3 times the price what you'd pay in more average place) - still, if you can afford, I'd recommend to try and get that aristocratic feeling of the good quality desserts in a really classy place where the elite of Budapest enjoyed them in an environment fitting to their standards by that time.
Dobos cake is for some reason often recommended - personally I never liked that hard caramel topping, and always went for Krémes as a child, but maybe it is rather a question of personal preference.
Somlói Galuska however is something I can recommend to anyone, great choice in my oppinion!
2. That's a cool place too! Strudels ("Rétes" in hungarian) is quite traditional, and there are many options for the filling. It was a good idea to give a chance to poppy seed filling, not that common in other places where you can find strudels, but maybe I am wrong on that. But for sure: don't worry about poppy seed is used for making drugs. The reason for is that if you want to make drugs from it, you will need them in their earlier stage, when it is less ripe. What is used for cooking is harvested later, and dried - you can't get high on it, no matter how hard you try.
And YES, vanilla ice cream is a perfect addition to it, my mom often serves the two things along as well. :)
3. Retró Lángos is a nice place for trying lángos - they have many varieties, and don't go easy on toppings either. Most people eat it without cutleries, by hand. Be prepared to have a messy face after, and oily hands what will need washing too, some wet napkins can come quite handy after that. Also, it is super filling, quite heavy food. Sharing one between the two of you was also a good idea if you plan to eat some more in the near future.
4. Never tried the place, but looks good. Kürtőskalács is best if you get it very fresh, while it is still hot or warm. It can get dried quickly though, which will degrade its quality (the soft inside will be less tasty), so try not to get those which where made several hours ago.
5. On pálinka: unfortunately hard to find really good ones. Most of the "bottled" versions (what you can usually buy in bars and shops) are not as tasty as the home made ones (which can be also terrible ones, depending on who makes it with what quality of ingredients), and the home made ones are usually even harder drinks (~50% of alcohol), so prepare they will hit hard. I can recommend "Árpád" brand though, I think they make a steadily good quality stuff.
Goulash and Csirke Paprikás: both are great choices! You can't get any more traditional as those ones, and they are both tasty. Goulash ("Gulyás") is a must-have. Although you can find dishes with the same name in neighbouring countries, it is usually a stew there, but originally it is a soup! The name comes from the old word for "cow" ("gulya"), the cow shepherd was called "Gulyás", and the name implies it is the soup they made typically.
On Unicum: well.... I have seen those faces after tasting it many times. :D Honestly, most of the people won't like it. I have met only a handful people from foreign countries who do. I'd still give it a try if you are a man who likes to experiment, and likes these weird, bitter tasting herby stuffs. But in my experience I have never met a girl before from a foreign country who liked it. If you are girl and you do for some reason, be prepared it will get you attention and respect from many man in Hungary. :D
Great video, anyway! Cheers from a hungarian living in Budapest.
Amazing!! Love you two. Praying for your Dad Natalie...Oh my! the food looked amazing. Wanna go there now just to eat 🤣🤣 Thank you for what you do and for just being great people. Stay safe and keep having fun.🙏✈☕🥘🧀....What kind of cheese was on the fried dough w/ sour cream if you know ?
Awww thanks so much friend! 😭🥹 We appreciate you & your prayers more than you know!! 🥰💗 hahaha I was hungry the whole time editing this video! Haha 🤣 that’s a great question, I think it was a cheddar! Gosh that was so good! 🤤🤣 making me hungry just thinking about it.
Thanks again Reuben! 💗💗
It is usually topped with trappist cheese. This cheese is almost unknown outside Hungary. It tastes most like gouda.
It is a semi-hard cheese, matured, with fermentation holes. It is made from cow's milk, with lactic acid bacteria culture, rennet and the addition of calcium chloride, potassium or sodium nitrate. Fatty trappistas must have a dry matter content of at least 56 %. True French Trappist is raw milk, i.e. the milk is not pasteurised and is matured for two months.
Normally, the cut surface of the cheese, which weighs about one and a half kilograms and is in the shape of a disc, has holes of 3-4 millimetres evenly distributed over the cut surface. It has a sour, slightly salty taste and smell.
@@knor1982 Thank you for that. Very much appreciated, have a great day sir.
Really nice video from a very nice couple. It is a "Unicum" for me to subscribe after my first video of a channel. You've made it. :D Enjoy Your Lifetime of Adventure.
Haha... Thanks so much @bodresz!! 😊 The Unicum was quite the experience! Lol... When in Hungary I guess! Lol... Thanks for watching and subscribing!
This video made me hungry and want to go to Hungary
It looks like it is Natalie’s turn to wear her hair in a bun. Great information and fun !😊
Hahaha 🤣👏🏼 love that!!
Right??? I was realizing I never do it when we’re filming! I’ll have to change it up more often! 🤣😜 Thanks for watching! 💗
OMG Poppyseed-cherry strudel, I could eat all day!!! (without ice cream) Poppyseed does not contain ant drug
Right?! So good! Haha… You are correct, poppyseed does not contain drugs, but eating a lot of them can result in false positive drug test for opiates.
Your pronunciation of Hungarian is very good
Thank you!! We tried! Lol… Thanks for watching!😊
Eat dessert first, best way to start! My family is Hungarian from my dad's side. My brother's wife made him chicken paprika for his birthday, a dish we enjoyed as a family meal occasionally. All your food looked delicious
There is a version of Unicum that has a plum base (Unicum Szilva), if you *really* want to try it I would go for that over the basic one if it's an option.
Budapest ❤❤❤❤
Eating lángos with a fork and knife triggered me real bad :D Glad you enjoyed your time here, come back soon! :)
🤣🤣💀💀 Too funny! Lol… Thank you! And thanks for watching! She’ll do better with her lángos next time!🤣
You guys should go to Romania as well. I would love to see that country. I’ve heard their cuisine is similar to Hungarian and Austrian one.
The Hungarian food in this video made me want to find some. 😊
Go to Google for great recipes! Jó ètvagyot!
Right?? It was SO good! I could use some lángos and chimney cake right about now! Lol... Thanks for watching!😊
@@AdventuresofMattandNat we are in Vegas!!
I’m Hungarian and langos was invented because back in the day, it used to be expensive to bake bread everyday. So they would just fry it.
Ahhh… That makes sense! Well, I’m happy they invented it because it’s delicious!😋 Thanks for watching!😊
What do you wrap around the strap of your Louis V? The thin strap digs into my shoulder. Help?
I'm from Cluj, and moved to Budapest 6 years ago, and i can tell you that the Kurtos Kalacs in hungary is not that good compared to what we have in Transylvania, also the size is 3 times bigger there and almost the same price, and it's much better in every way. On another hand, the real gulyas is like a stew, but most restaurant make it like a stew, but both are delicious, oh and it's ok if you don't like unicum, nobody does :))
Looks nice ... when u coming to UK ????
Thanks for watching!!! Hopefully later this year!!!! 🎉🎉
@AdventuresofMattandNat do u know where your visiting yet ... I'm in Bristol .. City of Bath is nice to visit .. Cardiff , Birmingham and (Cornwall & Devon Counties) gorgeous Beaches and seaside resorts and Cream Teas
💙💙👌👌👍👍😍😍
🥰🥰
Serious people don’t put sweat toppings on lángos, icecream into kürtöskalács but do drink pálinka in room temp just like whiskey, because thats the temp when you can taste the most flavours. By the way well done: till the end of the video you learned how to correctly pronounce Budapest:)
You didn't ate the original Túró Rudi. The original made with dark chocolate, you tried the milk chocolate version. I don't like the milk chocolate version its too sweet. You should try the dark chocolate one next time its way better.
Hi
The real story of the Dobos cake is a little different. József C Dobos was a businessman, not a chef. This cookie was sold exclusively by Him. That's why it was named after him.
Only high-quality flour can be used for the strudel/rétes, as it is only possible to make paper-thin dough from this type of flour.
When they first made strudel/rétes, Hungarian flour was like this, and it was very cheap too.
The dough should be so thin that it is translucent. This can be achieved by dragging.
The opium in the seeds of the poppy here is very low. In the past, poppy tea was used a lot, but there were also many drug addict. Therefore, the government of the time supported the breeding of opium-free poppies.
However, the dry cocoon of the poppy continued to be used to produce pain relievers. The logo of the Alkaloida pharmaceutical company also became the poppy cocoon. From then on, the poppy is in the same category as, for example, tobacco. It can only be grown with a permit, and straw and poppy seeds can only be sold with a permit.Today, only the seeds are sold, because Alkaloida has finished processing the straw.
Lángos and chimney cakes are also sold in many places in the city. In many cases, smaller places are cheaper and better. However, mostly the traditional versions are available.
The chimney cake has a legend.
In 1241, the Mongol Golden Horde attacked the Hungarian Kingdom. This is called the Tatar invasion. The people living here fought, defended hard and died. The Mongols did not expect such a defense and left the following year. The few survivors were evacuated to hidden places in time. The attack ended up destroying 80-90% of the country. (The statue of the king who built the country after him can be seen in the row of columns in Hősök Square. He is Béla IV. His nickname is the second home founder. The first was Árpád. He is also there in the square, among the horsemen.)
According to the legend, one of the Hungarian groups fled to a cave. The cave was at the top of a mountain, it was visible. The road leading there was also secret. The Mongols decided to wait until the Hungarians came out for food. But they didn't come out. Many straws were wrapped around a stick and placed in front of the cave. Just like the chimney cake. :-) The Mongols thought the Hungarians had plenty of food, because they could even make cookies. That's why they went somewhere else, trusting that they would have better luck there.
Pálinka is not usually sipped. You have to drink it all at once.
Dreher beer. The factory is in Budapest in the Kőbánya district.
Another popular brand is Soproni beer.
That little dumpling is the nokedli. A traditional side dish, especially for stew dishes.
For the history of Unicum:
When its inventor presented it to the ruler of the time, he exclaimed:
Das ist unicum!
From then on, the name of the drink is Unicum.
During the communist period, the family took the original recipe with them and produced it in Italy.
However, he left the recipe for a similar drink at the factory in Szeged.
So the communists thought they had the right to manufacture.
Which was true, but just not the original drink.
After the fall of the regime, the family returned home and resumed production based on the original recipe.
best
I think Zsa Zsa Gabor is from there
Yeah I think you’re right!!!
Yes. She was from Hungary. Same as Tony Curtis.
Yes Zsazsa Gabor was Hungarian.
Her real name was Zsuzsa Gabor , but, in the US , they couldn’t say Zsuzsa, & she became Zsazsa.
Ha,ha! Yes she was! She was my Dad's cousin.Got teased with Gabor as my last name.It means HERO in Hebrew...love it!
What about the prices?
Don't tell me you didn't get drunk in the end, your eyes tell everything.
Off of 1 Beer (which we split), 1 Palinka, and 1 Unicum? Not hardly. Lol… Our eyes look like that because we were exhausted! Lol… Too many LONG days of traveling and filming! We had a great time though! Thanks for watching!
Loved Budapest such a beautiful city, but yes did not like the herb liquor 😝
Unicum is more herbal than Jägermeister, more bitter and less sweet. There are Plum, or Coffee flavoured versions as well. The one with Plum is dope. Still Jägermeister is better.
Unicum Face should be a thing XD Not my fav either :)
🤣🤣🤣 very true!!
Oh dear, please don't use fork and knife for lángos! Need to eat it with your hands. 😂
Goulash...take care with palinca
I’m a type one diabetic so this wouldn’t be good for me even though the sweets look heavenly
Aw, sorry to hear that! Thanks so much for watching though!😊
UNIQUM IS BITTER YAKKKK
Should have named this video how to get diabetes in three days in Budapest
Three days?? This was one day! And happy to report that we are still diabetes free. Lol… Thanks for watching!👍🏼
Advice. No man ever looked at their woman and said "wow, you look so much better with those fake eyelashes".
No sweet topping on lángos! Rhe only acceptable way to eat it is how you guys ate it. Everything else is heresy.
Haha… Glad to hear we didn’t mess it up! Lol… Thanks for watching!
Why don't you find out about Islam. And you can compare the Quran and the Bible. In Islam, Jesus is a prophet, not a god.And God is one, not three.
All the place is bullish..t for tourist. Local people never go to these places!!!
🤣🤣🤣 we are tourists. lol. We would love to know your recommendations for when we come back! Thanks for watching! 🥰
@@AdventuresofMattandNat your videos are great!! but in these places that you tried, some of the dishes are made for tourists, not the way we eat!
Next try Kiosk Budapest, Krumplis Lángos Florian Square, etc.
Hungarian people never set foot in these places where you have been because the quality is not good.
