If you are consumed by revenge remember this:
There is no harm you could possibly inflict that is greater than the harm they are doing to themselves.
If they change and improve themselves, then rejoice, for an enemy has perished. Let your hatred perish with their sin.
What is the utility of fixating on another's failures? Focus only on the things you can control.

Choose not to be harmed and you won't feel harmed? That's not how that works. Also you can't listen twice as much. Sounds cool but no.

I don't think you understood what he meant. He is saying that events outside us are objective and we cannot change them. If someone says something offensive to you, will you feeling offended help the situation? However if you developed enough mental discipline to simply not be bothered about what one says about you then you won't feel offended or harmed. No point in feeling sad over something you can't change. U can't change someone else's terrible attitude but you can change your own response to someone saying something rude to you. That is exactly how that works.

@@brucew565 It's a romantically idealistic precept that is ultimately erroneous. You cannot help but have a response except if you're emotionally detached and emotional detachment is typically a consequence of trauma, not strength. The very idea of being void of offence is silly because it assumes that nothing inherently matters enough to be offended but when you hold certain values or a philosophy dear then anything that opposes it possibly presents an existential threat that warrants a response.
The Stoics didn't have a robust ideology, it only works if mankind possessed the ability to change our fundamental psychological and emotional functions in a godlike degree and be divorced from any adversity with equanimity and continue unaffected as though no incident occurred but nothing has ever indicated that human beings are able. If we had this ability we wouldn't have butchered eachother over many millennia.
You've never been offended by an internet article? Video clip? News report? TH-cam comment? Annoying neighbor or family member? Differing opinions? Deceitful narratives? Malignant actions? How much aggregate offence have you amassed over your life? Now ponder about how many of these times were serious concerns that were legitimate. It's not congruent to normal human responses nor does it simply offer an anchor that makes you achieve this state, it just instructs with an assumption that you inherently can, even Christianity knows better.

@@altustalent410 I can safely say that I have never been offended by an article or a video. I have disagreed with the idea and that's the basis of being a mature responsible adult in the world. There are too many people who keep getting offended over nothing. Mentally strong people don't get offended by articles or videos. There is a psychological concept called emotional resilience and psychologists support it. The ideology of the stoics was so robust that people still adopt it and use it to progress in life. Best of luck to you on getting offended over nothing in life. 🙂. Be objective and not offended. 👍

@@brucew565 Pretentiously stating that being mature is being devoid of offence doesn't refute my original assertion that you've never actually lived without offence, nevertheless calling yourself "a mature responsible adult in the world" is a common flippant deflection in which one assumes a righteous position they simply do not have.
Your stance is fundamentally hypocritical and it will find you in moments where you abandon that belief in something that'll affect you personally and those detached from your particular situation will not care. They're divorced from you. You don't have mental fortitude, you simply haven't experienced enough affliction to claim thus, you're still safe enough to create an online profile you've named after a fictitious character that utilizes his immense wealth to ultimately beat flamboyant petty criminals to a pulp rather than fund the police and create jobs to limit the poverty that creates the crime in his city.
But you feel mental fortitude idealising stupidity in a bat costume for entertainment. I think I need to be stupid in order to not be offended perhaps. Best of luck Bruce Wayne being objective on a couch thinking about video games whilst professing stoicism in Western privileges.
