OMG... I love indonesia.... Terima kasih yang sudah mencurahkan segenap upaya membuat video ini... Semoga bangsa ini terus damai dan sejahtera.... Lord thanks.
Back in 2012, I had the extreme fortune to spend about a month in Raja Ampat. It was the tail end of a cycling odyssey that took me from Sabang to Nabire. The goal was to cycle as much of the paved roads as I could find on the island of Waigeo. At the time, that took about two days. At the extreme terminus of my meandering, I found myself in Mayalibit Bay. And my plan changed completely. After a day on an outrigger with one of the locals I’d hired to show me around, I decided I would supplant my pedaling with paddling. The man who took me out that day - a very quiet and humble man with several young children - allowed me to set my tent up behind his home on the shores of this beautiful place. That first night, around two in the morning, it began raining so hard that the water was threatening to seep into my tent from the ground up. Embarrassed, I knocked on his door, and he immediately began helping me move my things into his home. I ended up spending the next week living with him and his family. One of so many beautiful experiences I’d had on this journey. I worked out a deal with him that I would return home every day with food and snacks for his family in exchange for the use of his unused outrigger that had no outboard. Yang biasa. For a week, I paddled around the coves and creeks (kali kali) around much of the bay. The completely protected waters provided a perfect space for me to practice maneuvering the canoe. I would use the incoming tide to make my way in, spend the day exploring and figuring out the basics, and use the outgoing tide to rush back into the village. Every day saw me become more proficient. After a little over a week, it was time for me to say my goodbyes and be on my way. I rode back beyond Waisai to a small village at the lip of Teluk Kabui. As I would do, I asked for the kepala desa and spent two nights with his family. Being that it was musim angin (the windy season), very few of these folks were out fishing, so I had use of this man’s canoe. He’d let me go and explore the mouth of the bay for the two days I spent there. It was more open to the sea beyond, so I had a chance to really put to use what I’d learned over in Mayalibit. I felt like I was ready. On my second night, I asked if I could trade my bicycle for his canoe. Basically collateral. He agreed after a talk with his brother. That night was the first really big storm since I had been nearly flooded in Mayalibit. No rain, the next morning, but very choppy seas. We walked down to the beach and I could feel a swelling of nerves. Not just in my own stomach, but from them too. Is this guy crazy? Is this guys stupid? Can this guy make it? My plan was to cross the channel between Waigeo/Gam and Mansuar. I felt like I would totally lose face if I turned around now - after making the deal, assuring people I could do what I was talking about. Let’s just say that I owe my life to a small, plastic ember mandi (wash basin bucket) that doubled as a bailing bucket. I’ve done a lot of crazy shit in my life that would exponentially raise the rate of a life insurance policy, but crossing that channel was the single most death defying act I’ve ever forced myself to do. I truly thought I was going to die at one point when I lost my bailer overboard (dug through my conveniently waterproof panniers for my shoes and lashed that thing to the boat with a shoelace after that). In all these protected waters, I’d learned how to turn the boat really well. I knew to steer the canoe directly into the waves (common sense). But I hadn’t yet dealt with currents and cross waves. I’d never needed a bucket before this. I couldn’t turn back in the beginning, because it would utterly destroy my pride. And also because I needed to know what was over on that island out there. By the time I was about a third the way, I couldn’t turn back because I’d just come too far. At the half way point between Gam and Mansuar Kecil, there’s a barren sea stack of an island. I’m not a scuba diver, but I’d imagine this must be an epic place below the waves. Above, it was basically a giant bird colony. I came within a few hundred yards of it in passing by and the waters suddenly became tranquil. It was blocking the wind and the waves. A welcome respite and chance to catch my breath after a couple hours of essentially frantically paddling for my life. I remember pulling out my second shoelace and tying my hand to the boat…. very securely. My body needed to float; my muscles needed a rest. And we just floated for a little bit - me and my trusty outrigger. I watched the clouds gain a little color as the sun was on its gradual descent. I looked at the island before me and the one behind. I thought about my mom. She’d be proud and fascinated to know I had completely this mission if I did. But what sort of torment was I setting her up for by selfishly doing this in the first place if I didn’t make it? I looked at those birds. Easy for them to come and go. Not a worry in the world for them. I got back into the boat and passed the shelter this little islet brought me, the waves and the sea foam and the wind picked up to a level that was far worse than what I’d encountered along the way. But beyond it, the water looked like glass. I could see the end to my fear just a mere couple hundred yards beyond. What I needed to do was dig deep, breathe calmly (in through the nose out through the mouth), and count. Every hundred strokes I could afford to look up and gauge what I had left to paddle, and switch sides of the canoe to paddle. Paddle with literally all the might I could muster, nothing less. In probably another 20 to 30 minutes, I was out of the rough water and gliding through glass smooth water. I finally made it to Pulau Mansuar Kecil (Kri) after another hour or so of paddling. A beautiful and relaxing and utterly satisfying hour of paddling. I’d made it past this little passage where Mansuar Kecil and that sea stack were channeling the wind and currents. I was in total serene safety. Nothing but the occasional stride through crystal clear waters of god knows what depth. The silhouette of Mansuar and Mansuar Kecil darkening against a sinking son. Those wavy, almost comical looking palms that grow in the area blowing in the breeze, becoming clearer with each stroke of the paddle. The bone white trunks of large jungle trees began to come into focus, the water slowly became shallower. I could make out people on the shore waving their arms at me. I had made it. I was probably more alive in that slow paddle to the beach than at any time in my life. These people on the beach urged me to come to their homestay. At the time, it was one of the only ones around. A far cry better than paying thousands (which I didn’t have) to stay at the big resort around the way. A might better than putting up my tent in my exhausted state. I spent the next 4 nights enjoying some of the best company of my entire life with these locals and their guests. I met a life long friend who organized his own outrigger to follow me back to Gam, paddle around the entirety of Kabui, though The Passage (fulfilling a big dream to further follow Wallace’s steps), into the secret bay, and back around again to Waisai. It was possibly the best thing I’ve ever done with my short time on this Earth, and certainly the most perfect ending to a long journey. Perhaps one day I’ll find myself fortunate enough to ply those waters in an outrigger again. I hope so. But I also hope other independent travelers on a very, very low and disciplined budget will be able to do the same. I’m very happy that a company like this one, offering kayaking tours to show not just the beauty below but also above the waters of Raja Ampat, exists and is making such beautiful (truly beautiful) promotional footage. I urge anyone with the means who’s read this far and is thinking about “taking the plunge” to just do it. You’ll thank yourself. But again, I hope the area is as free as it was for me. I hope the area still allows a foreigner like myself to negotiate the adventure of a lifetime with random (and utterly loving and friendly) set of locals, to procure an outrigger on their own terms. To ply the waters of this region as has been done for so many thousands of years. To know this amazing place and learn something very deep about yourself if you make that choice. Down to my bones, I hope that it’s still something a person can do there if they choose to.
Thank you for this amazing story made with passion and love, going to Indonesia in 10 days on a really strict budget but you kinda convinced me to do this
