From California, USA here, this was amazing to watch and see the process of wooden boat building. And see how much work goes into it. Indonesia, you guys have my full respect.
I love hand crafted things. I was a machinist for a very long time and it was so neat to see a rusty scaly piece of metal put into the machine and come out nice and shiny and clean and being able to be used for hundreds of thousands of uses that machinist made parts are used for. Old hand skills like this are dying art form once the Craftsman that has the knowledge dies the craft dies with it. Not one ruler are measuring device was put on that whole craft to come up with such a wonderful and beautiful ship. It is utterly amazing at the at the resilience and ingenuity of these people that build these wonderful ships. Save these wonderful crafts for the future generation.
We, Indonesians, called the ship as Phinisi (phi-nee-see), not peninsula. Bugis people (boogeyman?) had reach so many places around Nusantara, even had made their own "kampung", such as in Singapura there's an area called Kampoong Bugis. But, Bulukumba is not the only places that produce wooden-ship in Indonesia. There are some other places also create big hand-made ships, such as Pati (East Java), Pekalongan (Central Java), Jakarta, Bagan Siapi-api (Riau Islands), etc... The ships length can reach 30 meter long.
This is so much more than a beautiful ship, it's a majestic floating work of art, expertly built by amazingly skilled craftsmen. . . A joy to behold. . . Blessings. . .
Damn. That ironwood is damn expensive here in Texas. I can’t believe how they use this for boats, it’s one tough wood and should last nearly forever if taken care of.
As a matter of fact the term "pirate" described by the colonial that took and shipped the spices originated from the area (java,sulawesi/celebes, maluku/mollucas, banda and other islands). The Bugis are sailors by nature. They fought the dutch, Portuguese spanish to stop them abusing their land, and protecting their spices. The western called them pirates for defending their land.
in the past indonesia when figh for independent againts dutch called terrorist in europe newspaper . another expample is some ppl in middle east and africa called terrorist on their own land hahaha
The hull planks first leading to asymmetrical issues is interesting. Video claims they found shipwreck that washed up and they thought it was magic from the gods and reverse engineered it. That’s probably why they build it hull first. This is sooooo similar to how China reverse engineers other countries tech and had tolerance issues and can’t quit get it as precise in regard to the manufacturing process. Does it work? Yes, is it precise and optimized? No. Great video. Thanks for posting.
MANTAP!!! Fantastic doco, the boat builders, filming, editing and the well researched informative narration. My documentation of building a traditional wooden Balinese Jukung pales into insignificance with the sheer scale of this project. Cheers from Bali.
Such an interesting video. I'm really glad it was uploaded. I wonder with that construction technique, though, what happens when you need to replace a board due to damage of some kind?
Bogeyman - Etymology: Is derived from the Middle English bogge/bugge (also the origin of the word bug), it means "a frightening spectre." Might the "Bagus" men of Indonesia have been privateers raiding the ships of foreign conquerers? "Bagus" meaning good in Indonesian. Defenders of Indonesia to Indonesians, pirates to foreign trading and war ships.
It's not Bagus, but Bugis which is an ethnicity in South East Asia, but yes the etymology that tries to tie that to Boegyman is suspect and very likely false the roots of the word boegyman pre-date the conquest of South East Asia. In addition the earliest known use of the word Bugis was in 1672 by poet and college head Joseph Beaumont, and the Bugis people call themselves "Ugi" in their own language. Perhaps "Bugis" derived from "Boegyman" as some sort of slight from Joseph Beaumont, but most likely not the other way around.
When the earth wipes us away and everything starts again in a few tens of thousands of years, The Forrest’s and the seas will be fully stocked and sailing ships will reign supreme again! (If we’re there by the way it will be a terrible time to live 😂)
Gas motors in these old curures ship motors that leak old and then oil gets in wood and fire happens. Also no gps trackers in these so other boats run into them at night and also the carry illegal cargo I heard. Idk tho.
Wow sails cool. It's not a cargo wood ship in the Mediterranean sea that I've seen and heard they run with out gps trackers or lights so sail baits hit them cause of them not coming up on radar. These were way cool boats good job
This is not about islam, this is şirk, if you want to something good from Allah just tell to Allah. No need to put gold under the wood, or no need to fire to cut wood. Just tell Allah, please make this ship to good everyone.
Yes, but he did say that pre-dated Islam. I do have to object, however, to his statement that this is what the Bugis believe. The majority of Bugis people do not believe these pre-Islamic beliefs anymore.

The problem here are the ironwood, it's super rare rightnow

i want one so fucking bad. omg beautiful.
they take it so seriously. Way more seriously than some 25 ft fiberglass boat builders.
Brilliant!!
Nice ship!

Ini vidio tahin berapa bg
great job
How big is that boat? Looks beautiful, looks like swordfish
Masterpiece
Best
Absolutely beautiful ,, I didn't hear what the planking was made of but Iron Wood is harder than any wood I know including the hard woods of Australia
Kayu Ulin dan kayu jati itu adalah kayu yang kuat tahan lama tidak berkarat keropos seperti besi harganya pun lebih mahal.
The English translation at the beginning is not quite accurate, what the shipwright is saying is actually more elegantly said.
it always is, translators are either lazy or not truly bilingual
@@saemoursaeless6242 translation is inverted & not accurate.
👍👏👏👏👏👏👏

hanging an innocent goat is bad omen for the boat...that's my belief....
Yea, its better hang a prisioner there

The narrator and movie makers clearly value sensationalism over fact checking.
blablabla 1,000,000USD later :)))
poor guys and poor wives
Ah great, so its the marriage of the natural craftmanship with witchcraft.... pass....
Demon practice

Yang merusak alam itu perusahan perusahan tambang dan perkebunan kelapa sawit.
Bukan pembuat perahu ok
How much money to have one built?
ranging from 2 - 10 billion rupiah, depending on the size of the ship
Around 10 billion usd, for big ship for travelling
@gunawanguna7173 there's no way it's 10 billion dollar. Most likely it's 10 billion rupiah
