      Some oldies, but goodies... Militec 1, and EEZOX. And, there's a mix of 25% Mobil 1 synthetic ATF to 75% Mobil 1 10w30 oil that seemed to be a go-to product for some AR15 users a few years back. The ATF was added to the oil due to it's cleaning properties. Users swore by it saying it was all they were using for many years.

    I've used BreakFree for decades, but recently switched to Clenzoil after watching Project Farm's test. The Clenzoil turned out to be - as you said - equal to BF for rust but it blew it away for friction and wear. Ballistol, I was shocked to find out is basically garbage as is all the other stuff you, I and most people have used and tested for decades.

      I used Hoppes for years out of habit, but after watching the Project Farms test, I switched to Clenzoil. Clenzoil didn't do well in the cold test, but I won't be using my pistol in -40° weather. Contrary to the Project Farms tests, this guy's results aren't very scientific. I might have more confidence in his work if he could even spell Clenzoil.

  • @andygold
    @andygold 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Some suggestions for future testing. Have your sample plates standing up. With them flat, and next to each other, the wind, and rain will cause the lubes to migrate from plate to plate. Also, when you were scratching each lube, if the torch did not totally burn the lube off your scratching tool, then you were mixing lubes between plates.
    Edit.... Forgot to add... Hornady One Shot cleaner and lube (not the case lube) is definitely worth trying. It won a 46-way test on another review of gun lubes. That and Frog Lube are my two favorites out of about 20 or so I currently have. The Hornady One Shot makes my auto knives fire harder than anything I've tried, and penetrates deep into recesses. It's also made my bullpup triggers so much smoother than anything else I've tried.

    I’ve used FrogLube paste for years now and it’s been great. Stays put and makes my guns feel real slick. No issues whatsoever here in CO were it’s seen sub sub zero temps and up to 100. I’ve made the switch to Slip2000 EWG though. The mint smell was nice but it doesn’t stay and it seems to breakdown after long periods of time. Doesn’t effect its operation in my experience though once heated up from firing. Slip just seems to not breakdown and has no odor ever. It got a little weird having a mint flavored gun lol. Still was way better than old school nasty smelling irritant oils. I also stopped using regular oil in general. Grease and thicker oils work much better imo and don’t leave a mess after sitting a while. They don’t get pushed off as easy either when shooting. I’ve also found no excess carbon or dirt using them over very light amounts of oil like people say. Also makes it much easier to clean in my experience. Just keep external areas free of excess oil/grease and it’s fine.

With that said he or no one can compare them all. Their are hundreds of oils, greases, CLP, Lubricants, etc etc that are branded for guns. As you stated, these test are very subject. Especially when considering the fact that there was cross contamination and inconsistent pressure when friction testing. ProjectFarm showed that Break Free and Clenzoil came out on top through a number of test. Prior to watching his video, I did a quick Google search and was going to buy Break Free, but after watching his video, I decided to buy Clenzoil.
    Although the Clenzoil didn't do as well as others with the rust test, it still did well. I find that with normal maintenance and cleaning, then rust should never be an issue. But on the other hand, the Clenzoil did extremely well when it came to the friction test, which was the main determining factor for me.
    Similarly to how heat will always be the destructive factor for electronics, friction will always be the destructive factor for moving parts.
    In addition to that, I also like the fact that the Clenzoil comes in kits, with different accessories & applicators to clean your firearm.

    Gun cleaners/ oils bring out so many opinions. Guess not much different than sat automotive lubricant discussions. Facts are they all work to certain extents, some like clp's are never going to protect as well as just an oil etc, but the environment you leave your firearms, and how much you neglect them or expose them to the elements dictates corrosion. A very fine coating of any gun lubricant is all they require, then clean and re-oil frequently and you will never worry

    If seen a few of these oil/CLP tests and it seems like Hoppes is one of the worst performers overall. That sort of shocked me given its popularity. I used to use Hoppes for many years when I first started purchasing firearms as it was simply a name I recognized. Never had a rust issue but that might be because I fired and then cleaned my firearms on a fairly regular basis so rust never had a chance to form regardless. A few years ago, I switched over to Shooter Lube which also works fine though I'd really like to see a series of tests like this (or from Project Farm) on how it compares. This test and the test from Project Farm showed that Clenzoil has really good lubrication qualities so I switched to that recently. My first one step gun cleaning product as I've always used two step prior. Clenzoil works great and being a one step product does save a little time but I never really found cleaning my firearms to be that much of a chore. I've long felt that taking apart and cleaning your firearm is actually relaxing in a way. I think all these products offer protection and cleaning qualities but clearly some are much better engineered and are superior to others. Overall, just don't neglect your firearms and clean them every so often even if you're not shooting them regularly.

    I use rem oil on the outside of my air guns it does a decent job their. Maybe test the oils function at cleaning for the next tests. Rem oil will fade over time but seems to prevent corrosion damage and what rust is their is just on the surface haven’t encountered any pitting. A viscosity test would also be cool.

    Minimum you should be wiping the oil off after every test. To be really precise, you should be using a different scraper for every test. Basically, after scraping the first one, you contaminated everything voiding all of your results.

    It’s interesting to me how well BF CLP did. I have ALWAYS said CLPs are compromise products and for that reason they must barely hit par but underperform compared to products like Lucas. Hate to admit it but CLP is good.

    • @workthetrigger
      @workthetrigger  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I had the same realization. It was also hard to admit that those motor oils that everybody suggests in place of gun oils maybe aren't the best thing, and are specially formulated for enclosed environments and cant deal with the environmental differentials that guns may.

    the firearm community in general is pretty crazy when it comes to cleaners/lubricants etc. But these tests aren't really worth much, for starters if your weapon is bare steel you have bigger issues at hand. Then the extremes to which people are testing makes little sense, facts are chemically these products are all very similar, most are cashing in on a niche market saying they can do this or that when in fact they are not far different from standard cleaning solvents and synthetic oils- we are cleaning/ protecting coated steel and alloys that you only need to apply light coatings of oil to protect, heavy coats is bad, it has more to do with the environment in which you store it. If its a mositure laden area for long periods you will get corrosion. Clean them properly, apply a lubricant and store in a smart place and you will have a lasting finish, they all work people generally stay with what they know.

      I agree to a point. In 2022, I've seen many CLPs, oils come & go. Since the 1980s. I currently buy, use Clenzoil, Slip 2000 EWL, Ballistol. Clenzoil is a petroleum based. It may burn 🔥 at higher temps but it has no fumes, odors 👃. It's done very well in other online T&Es. Slip 2000 EWL is decent but can be hard to find locally. I've used it on my firearms with 0 problems. 6-8mo.

    Thank you for the dedication it must take to run a test like this in the first place. Your results have kind of backed up what I've found over the years. I use CLP almost without exception . In warmer weather I'll use Lucas on trigger and action parts. But through personal experience I'll say Red Lucas will thicken in cold weather to the point of making semi auto 22lr actions gum up and malfunction. I'm ready for round 2 .

    Clp will burn off in less than 50 shots it’s good for cleaning though. If you lube with slip 2000 you’ll be ok. I’m currently using battleborn hp pro which is a thicker version of the battleborn used in this vid. From my experience I have found 4 lubricants that don’t burn off. The first is Fireclean I know it gums up in storage but it’ll stay wet for a few months and hundreds of rounds through several range sessions. The second I found is slip2000 EWL which is tested here this stuff kinda soaks into the metal to where it almost feels dry but you can see a sheen. To me Slip2000 doesn’t make my guns feel as slick as the other three but it’s also the thinnest of the four. The third is Lucas Oil Extreme duty. The only thing I don’t like about Lucas Oil Extreme duty is the smell. It does make the gun feel super smooth though and it does hold up to multiple range sessions. The fourth Lubricant I’ve discovered that doesn’t burn off is What I currently useBattleborn HP pro. It’s slick like Lucas but without odor. It also conditions like Fireclean.

    • @workthetrigger
      @workthetrigger  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've not seen any indication of CLP burning off any more than others, or to the point of failure. I got that friction bar significantly hotter than any gun should be getting, and it didn't cause enough burn off to increase corrosion or friction at all.
      If you are worried about burn off, check out Molecular Advantage (shown in the test). it contains no oil products and has no flash point. it literally cant burn off. the only issue i found is that it gets slightly thicker in extreme low temperatures. but it'd be worth a shot.

    • @jasonsmith7345
      @jasonsmith7345 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      WorkTheTrigger maybe I got a bad batch, when I first got into shooting I used clp. I used the break free in the aerosol can with Teflon if that matters I loved how it made my pistol feel before shooting but after about 35-40 shots the pistol would be dry and I would need to add more. At the time I was breaking in a SP2022 at the time btw those require a lot of lube the first couple hundred rounds.I still use it on my bicycle drivetrain though on all the friction points and I clean my pistols with it occasionally for the protection it offers. For me this test validated my use of clp as a preservative. If money were no object I would say buy 10 pistols all the same model then lube each one with a different product and shoot em and then see what happens maybe we should start a go fund me?

      @workthetrigger  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1
