These tests are always interesting and useful. There are really some useful lubricants out there and I appreciate your work in keeping us up to date. So far I dont see t he need to move from Hoppes 9 for cleaning, and Remoil for short term preservation. I've never tried Ballistol though, so I think I'll try it out. Thanks.
Thanks 357magdad for your testing. However, one thing you didn't test for was lubricity. ProjectFarm's testing shows how much better Clenzoil's lubricating properties are. Personally, I think lubricity is the most important characteristic for gun oil/CLP in moderate climates. Ballistol and Hoppes appear to be a relatively inferior lubricant. Break Free appears to be a much better lubricant than Ballistol and Hoppes . Clenzioil appears to be MUCH better than those 3 by a wide margin. I personally use Kerosene for general cleaning, Hoppes #9 Bore Cleaner for barrel interior, Clenzoil for overall lubrication, and an air compressor for blowing out, and to distribute the oil. I do realize that a CLP is meant as an "all in one" product", but I've found the 3 separate products do a better job than any single CLP. Also, Fluid Film as corrosion protection for long term storage.
Thanks for watching! I like to run my GP100 pretty dry. I feel like the benefits of lube would be cancelled out once it attracts burnt powder. I think this may also be true for the slides on semi autos. A tiny amount of synthetic grease may be a better option if lubrication is required.
Good point. I totally forgot about revolvers, because I don’t own any. I was mainly speaking to semi autos. I should have clarified. There are so many variables as well. I’m one of those that completely remove all residue after every use, so there is less chance for whatever lubricant to turn into an abrasive slurry. I do realize that I’m probably in the minority, as most gun owners, don’t clean their weapon as often. A liberally lubricated weapon that is not cleaned regularly after use could certainly have a negative effect due to wet surfaces attracting residue and becoming abrasive/gummy over time. Apparently some polymer guns such as Glocks don’t need much lubrication at all. I’m guessing due to the loose tolerances and minimal slide to frame contact, as opposed to metal framed semi autos with full contact along the rails, such as 1911s, CZs, etc. I’d love to see some lubricity testing of high-end gun greases, not oil, against Clenzoil.
It’s always good to have some confirmation on what time has shown me personally. On a side note. Nothing that dose everything is as good as something that is meant to do just one job. Thanks for sharing
Personally, I've never been in *so much* of a hurry that using a single product for both cleaning and protection / lube was necessary, but it seems like Balistol did a decent job. My current process has actually been a bit of column A, little of column B. I use Hoppes 9 for cleaning, CLP for wipe-down, and a needle-tip applicator of Clenzoil for lubrication (more or less following the strengths of Project Farm's video from a while back which lines up with other testing I've seen). If you're in the military and don't have time to spend an hour taking care of your gun after a range trip (or for general maintenance of your carry) then for sure, something that'll do it all. But if you've got the time to do it properly, it seems better to use multiple agents playing to their strengths. Good testing, and thanks!

How do they fair if you cleaned the metal strip oiled the squares with CLP product then put powder and light it, will the oil protect the metal from the heat leaving no marks?
@mikeb2687 Ballistol isn't toxic, no need for gloves. It's actually not harmful (but surely unpleasant) if ingested, minus the aerosol product that will have gas propellant in its composition.
This is so fun to watch. I am that guy that use to pay to have my pistols cleaned. Decided to start doing it myself and have been looking for the best spray on clp. Your vids have helped me a lot. Looks like Ballistol is going to be it for me
FYI, 3-4 months ago at the Caterpillar Corrosion Conference; sherwin williams gave a detailed analysis about testing procedures. To the engineers. Long story short the ideal range for corrosion is around 5-9% mixture for maximum corrosion. 1tsp is 5.65 grams. A cup of water is 240ml. You’re at about 2.31%. Try 21 grams per cup of water or a tablespoon+teaspoon per cup of water. Edit: also it might be a good test to show copper fowling removal. I don’t Balistol can remove copper fouling.
For the initial cleaning, it would be interesting to see if the Hoppes and/or Ballistol cleaned the areas that weren't successful in the Clenzoil/Break Free areas - just to show there wasn't a local difference in the steel or burning temperature that accounted for the failure.

You make an outstanding video with excellent information. Your demo convinced me that Hoppes 9 is the best general cleaner, with Ballistol also being very effective at cleaning carbon. I don’t know if Ballistol is as good as Hoppes for cleaning other gun residue besides carbon. I do know that Ballistol has a very unpleasant odor, and for that reason alone, I no longer use Ballistol. It’s terrible smell permeates the air in a gun safe and really is awful.

I use Ballistol on all my pistols exclusively. Its pretty amazing how old it is, completely safe, and effectively removes carbon. As a lubricant vs wear, Ballistol is a little suspect, so the answer is to clean after 2 to 3 range trips.
I’ve been using Ballistol for years, however, I have noticed a bit of rust on my wall hangers after a year. Especially ,the ones with bright white metal that was not blued. What is Ballistol’s new product called Gunex?
I stopped using the Ballistol because it seemed to provide very little actual lubrication. Its a good cleaner but I use Clenzoil now because the better lubricity is noticeable and my surface wear has stopped after switching over to the Clenzoil.
I dont know anything about those products. Are they intended as a cleaner and final treatment? I see Ballistol used by a lot of people seemingly with no complaints. I myself always use No 9 cleaner and wipe down with oil afterwards with no complaints.
CLP's claim to be do-it all products. I came up with these tests to see if they can replace a dedicated bore solvent like Hoppes #9 and also offer corrosion protection.
Next time you do a test, try distilled water for your corrosion test. Distilled water is really hard on paint. We painted distilled water tanks with pure epoxy paints.
Nicely Done! Very Nicely Done! Im old school. Have used Hoppes No 9 since I was a wee lad. I dont believe one combined product can do the work of 2 targeted products. That goes for anything like "Cleans & Shines", "Stain & Polyurethane in One" and so on. Always used gun oil as a protectant and a little moly grease on contact points. I figured the CLPs were much more advanced lubricant than they were cleaners so thanks for proving that. Have thought about using one of the CLPs as a lube after my Hoppes 9 cleans the weapon, think Ill try them now for a lubricant. I heard Ballistol stinks worse than Hoppes. Any takers on that? But this is a "CLP" test meaning "Clean, Lubricate, Protect" and Ballistol is horrible at the latter 2 requirements of that trifecta. Clenzoil and Break Free lubricate and protect SIGNIFICANTLY better and clean just as well if you just scrub a little more. Im no fanboy of either, but its very clear Clenzoil and Break Free both are a much better "CLP" and you just like Ballistol. Which is fine, but its nearly impossible to say Ballistol is a better CLP than either of these other options.

In California salt spray, humidity, moisture etc aren’t a problem where I live. Burnt powers etc are. I’m using ballistol right now and according to your test I’m using the right stuff since I don’t have to worry about rust where I’m at.
I use Clenzoil and the ProjectFarm video showed there are products that protect against rust better than Clenzoil (as you showed) but it was the lubrication qualities that sold me on that product. I'm assuming some specialized equipment would be needed to do a lubrication test that is consistent and accurate. That Clenzoil did as poorly as it did in your carbon test was a little disheartening but I always use a brush anyways. Clenzoil does have some aroma but it's not as bad as Hoppes IMO. I still have a couple bottles of Clenzoil to go through but you've given me something to consider on whether or not I try a different product in the future. But again, the lubrication properties of Clenzoil are great and that's my main concern with a CLP. Are any CLP truly great at all 3 or is there always one aspect it might lag a bit? Is the two step process better (using Hoppes 9 and then oil for example) or is a CLP generally good enough at all 3 that with regular use, your firearms will be adequately cleaned, lubed and protected? I used to be a two step cleaner (first Hoppes 9 and then I switched to Shooter Lube) but about a year ago I switched to CLP and thus far it seems to suit my needs. If nothing else, CLPs simplifies the cleaning process a bit.
Still doing a two step with Hoppes 9 as a cleaner and Clenzoil as the lubricant and like you, I saw the ProjectFarm video and seeing as I don’t swim with my firearms, and they are already cleaned, lubricity became my main objective which Clenzoil out performed other CLPs. I used it today and just cycling my firearms, they are noticeable more slick. Smells like mosquito repellant or something.
Great video. I have Ballistol, Breakfree and Hoppes (and one or two others in supply). Prob. not going to be a Clenzoil person just because of timing. The other 3 seem to have been getting the job done very well for a very long time. Gonna stay with these. Cleaning and taking care of gun in a reasonable way with these and you'll be good. Significant copper fouling in rifles might need another product for best results. Take care of your guns and they will take care of you.
@@357magdad That is the one I use lol. Have a bottle that's prob. 10 to 12 years old and 95% full that would go bad (if it already hasnt) before I use it all. Might get a fresh bottle and see if it comes in smaller size :)
Something else not covered that you all might like to know is that Ballistol can be mixed with water to become what any black powder shooter will know as Moose Milk. It's about 9 parts water to 1 part Ballistol (some recipes may vary). This is great for people shoot corrosive ammo or black powder OR if you have a particularly foul rifle that needs to be rinsed with something. When the water is gone, the Ballistol stays but I still follow up with pure Ballistol when the heavy lifting is done. If you are shooting corrosive ammo or BP, start with pure water first, then moose milk, then Ballistol at the very end.
i love ballistol, but the smell of it makes me nauseous. so i use hoppes number 9 for powder removal and finish up with breakfree. similar finish without getting light headed and smelling like ballistol all day.
Years back I put some Ballistol into a plastic bottle needle-oiler. A few months later I returned and looked inside the bottle. The Ballistol had turned into a waxy goo that you would certainly not want on or in your firearms. Been cleaning guns for years and for all around still prefer Breakfree CLP.
Good residue video! I would not spray Ballistol (or WD40) into a trigger group for lubrication purposes and let it remain there based upon what I saw in your helpful video and what I saw in the bottom of my needle-oiler.
In terms of pure lubrication i think Clenzoil takes the cake. I'd much rather put it on my bolts. Though for surface rust protection I think i'm gonna stick with Hoppes 9.
Definitely utilize clenzoil for lubrication. Based upon actual research and testing, there is nothing arguably better out there for lubrication. I'm not sure why it appears here with cleaning products when it's really a lube.
There is an older TH-cam channel called “German Tool Reviews.” He is not posting any more, but that’s where I learned about Ballistol. His channel is still up if you like good tools.
My own experience with Clenzoil has been similar. Not that great of a cleaner on its own without a bit of work and elbow grease. I would never have guessed it would be so bad at rust protection. It's not like I am going to go swimming in the ocean with my firearm, it is still interesting and informative. Thanks for the video. I would like to see a test with Breakthrough Clean's military solvent and CLP.
Very reassuring. Your more scientific approach confirms my personal positive experience with Ballistol over many years. I prefer it over Hoppe‘s for its safeness to environment and health. Otherwise Hoppe‘s is a great product too. Haven’t used any of the others.
Hoppes #9 is a dedicated powder solvent. It does not protect against corrosion. After cleaning your bore with Hoppes #9 you have to use a gun oil to protect it.
CLP’s are more CONVENIENT for defense forces weapons than Civilians weapons. A good bore solvent, some elbow grease and then any decent oil final patch is all there is to it. I personally prefer Shooter’s Choice products( Hoppes smell is very strong) ! Now than Shooter’s Choice is history, BALLISTOL is more than adequate replacement. I just love it ❤

I always use a brass bore brush, so no big deal for me. I shoot and clean my guns often keeping a fairly fresh application of oil on at all times. So corrosion has never been an issue for me. The biggest and most important thing for a C.L.P. to do for me is lubrication and wear resistance on metal to metal contact point like the slide rails and the barrel and lugs. Clenzoil is far superior for that than Ballistol.
Like this stuff.. I'd like to see same test.. But..powder burns x10, X 50 x100 to replicate multiple rifle firings. As I'm interested in preventing carbon build and removing it. Im using boretech , eliminator, copper remive and carbon remover. Still developing my approach. Removing (and preventing) carbon seems the hard are more (potentially) serious issue for me...shooting 17rem, 204r etc. Happy with G96 complete gun treatment for bolts...and😅..it smells nice...😅😅😅
Good video! I use Ballistol mainly for cleaning guns that have been fired with corrosive priming, mixing it 10:1 with water. I don't mind the smell at all. I also use the Ed's Red (no Acetone) mixture for cleaning as well.
They all do certain things better than others. Ballistol is obviously some good stuff. As is BreakFree. I’m one of those weird guys that actually enjoys cleaning my guns often so I never really let it get burnt powder buildup or fowling. My dad always used Ballistol on his black powder rifles. Worked great. I’m in Florida so extreme low temps aren’t a thing for me. Lubricity is what I look for. And I believe Clenzoil gets the win for lubricity after watching quite a few tests.
I mix up Ed's Red Bore Solvent, sans Acetone and Lanolin, for $0.23/ounce. It works as good or better than any other CLP I've tried. Equal parts Low Order Mineral Spirits, K-1 Heater Kerosene and Dexron II, IIe, III ATF.
you had better luck with ballistol than I have had. Far as I can tell it doesn't do much of anything. I make my own CLP for pennies an ounce. never have found anything better. no secret it is called Ed's Red and the formula is maybe a century old at this point. look it up. I maker it buy the gallon and am always running out cause everyone I know grabs a pint or two.. Whatever you use think what a gallon of it would cost LOL
I've seen two of your videos, this one and the one you brushed the product while on the burnt powder. Neither is an accurate way to clean your gun. Most people will run a bore brush through the barrel, to loosen the powder. Then use the solvent on a patch. I find your technique a little backwards. Just saying.

For lubrication, there is the ceramic-based Ballistol Gunnex, which is much more efficient and resistant than the classic Ballistol.

I have not used Gunex, but it sounds like it might fit your application.

I stopped using the Ballistol because it seemed to provide very little actual lubrication. Its a good cleaner but I use Clenzoil now because the better lubricity is noticeable and my surface wear has stopped after switching over to the Clenzoil.

I dont know anything about those products. Are they intended as a cleaner and final treatment? I see Ballistol used by a lot of people seemingly with no complaints. I myself always use No 9 cleaner and wipe down with oil afterwards with no complaints.
CLP's claim to be do-it all products. I came up with these tests to see if they can replace a dedicated bore solvent like Hoppes #9 and also offer corrosion protection.

Next time you do a test, try distilled water for your corrosion test. Distilled water is really hard on paint. We painted distilled water tanks with pure epoxy paints.

Nicely Done! Very Nicely Done! Im old school. Have used Hoppes No 9 since I was a wee lad. I dont believe one combined product can do the work of 2 targeted products. That goes for anything like "Cleans & Shines", "Stain & Polyurethane in One" and so on. Always used gun oil as a protectant and a little moly grease on contact points. I figured the CLPs were much more advanced lubricant than they were cleaners so thanks for proving that. Have thought about using one of the CLPs as a lube after my Hoppes 9 cleans the weapon, think Ill try them now for a lubricant. I heard Ballistol stinks worse than Hoppes. Any takers on that? Hoppes smells great! They even make Hoppes #9 air fresheners! Ballistol has a love it or hate it smell...
I started using ballistol after watching Hickok use it like nobody’s business on his glocks..I agree that it almost creates a seasoned cast iron coating on my g19..smell is ok to me..great comparison!

At 6:45, he discusses the 24 hour test in which Ballistol showed significantly more corrosion than the Break Free. So why is Ballistol the winner?
The Ballistol was able to dissolve burnt powder better than the Break Free, making it a better all-around CLP in my opinion. If you are interested only in corrosion protection check out this video:

But this is a "CLP" test meaning "Clean, Lubricate, Protect" and Ballistol is horrible at the latter 2 requirements of that trifecta. Clenzoil and Break Free lubricate and protect SIGNIFICANTLY better and clean just as well if you just scrub a little more. Im no fanboy of either, but its very clear Clenzoil and Break Free both are a much better "CLP" and you just like Ballistol. Which is fine, but its nearly impossible to say Ballistol is a better CLP than either of these other options.

To my knowledge most CLP's are designed to be used on all firearms.
In California salt spray, humidity, moisture etc aren’t a problem where I live. Burnt powers etc are. I’m using ballistol right now and according to your test I’m using the right stuff since I don’t have to worry about rust where I’m at.

I use Clenzoil and the ProjectFarm video showed there are products that protect against rust better than Clenzoil (as you showed) but it was the lubrication qualities that sold me on that product. I'm assuming some specialized equipment would be needed to do a lubrication test that is consistent and accurate. That Clenzoil did as poorly as it did in your carbon test was a little disheartening but I always use a brush anyways. Clenzoil does have some aroma but it's not as bad as Hoppes IMO. I still have a couple bottles of Clenzoil to go through but you've given me something to consider on whether or not I try a different product in the future. But again, the lubrication properties of Clenzoil are great and that's my main concern with a CLP. Are any CLP truly great at all 3 or is there always one aspect it might lag a bit? Is the two step process better (using Hoppes 9 and then oil for example) or is a CLP generally good enough at all 3 that with regular use, your firearms will be adequately cleaned, lubed and protected? I used to be a two step cleaner (first Hoppes 9 and then I switched to Shooter Lube) but about a year ago I switched to CLP and thus far it seems to suit my needs. If nothing else, CLPs simplifies the cleaning process a bit.

Still doing a two step with Hoppes 9 as a cleaner and Clenzoil as the lubricant and like you, I saw the ProjectFarm video and seeing as I don’t swim with my firearms, and they are already cleaned, lubricity became my main objective which Clenzoil out performed other CLPs. I used it today and just cycling my firearms, they are noticeable more slick. Smells like mosquito repellant or something.

Great video. I have Ballistol, Breakfree and Hoppes (and one or two others in supply). Prob. not going to be a Clenzoil person just because of timing. The other 3 seem to have been getting the job done very well for a very long time. Gonna stay with these. Cleaning and taking care of gun in a reasonable way with these and you'll be good. Significant copper fouling in rifles might need another product for best results. Take care of your guns and they will take care of you.

@@357magdad That is the one I use lol. Have a bottle that's prob. 10 to 12 years old and 95% full that would go bad (if it already hasnt) before I use it all. Might get a fresh bottle and see if it comes in smaller size :)

No, I have not.
Something else not covered that you all might like to know is that Ballistol can be mixed with water to become what any black powder shooter will know as Moose Milk. It's about 9 parts water to 1 part Ballistol (some recipes may vary).
This is great for people shoot corrosive ammo or black powder OR if you have a particularly foul rifle that needs to be rinsed with something. When the water is gone, the Ballistol stays but I still follow up with pure Ballistol when the heavy lifting is done.
If you are shooting corrosive ammo or BP, start with pure water first, then moose milk, then Ballistol at the very end.
Whats the point of making moose milk when you can use straight ballistol?

i love ballistol, but the smell of it makes me nauseous. so i use hoppes number 9 for powder removal and finish up with breakfree. similar finish without getting light headed and smelling like ballistol all day.
I'm also not a fan of Ballistol's smell.
Years back I put some Ballistol into a plastic bottle needle-oiler. A few months later I returned and looked inside the bottle. The Ballistol had turned into a waxy goo that you would certainly not want on or in your firearms. Been cleaning guns for years and for all around still prefer Breakfree CLP.

Good residue video! I would not spray Ballistol (or WD40) into a trigger group for lubrication purposes and let it remain there based upon what I saw in your helpful video and what I saw in the bottom of my needle-oiler.

Just a pro tip, ‘DO NOT’ mix any of these. The result will dissolve any rubber or silicone parts, like gas rings in BCG’s.

Ballistol definitely performs well, as long as the odor doesn't bother you.
In terms of pure lubrication i think Clenzoil takes the cake. I'd much rather put it on my bolts. Though for surface rust protection I think i'm gonna stick with Hoppes 9.
Definitely utilize clenzoil for lubrication. Based upon actual research and testing, there is nothing arguably better out there for lubrication. I'm not sure why it appears here with cleaning products when it's really a lube.

In my opinion Hoppes smells WAY better than Ballistol.
My own experience with Clenzoil has been similar. Not that great of a cleaner on its own without a bit of work and elbow grease. I would never have guessed it would be so bad at rust protection. It's not like I am going to go swimming in the ocean with my firearm, it is still interesting and informative. Thanks for the video.

Very reassuring. Your more scientific approach confirms my personal positive experience with Ballistol over many years. I prefer it over Hoppe‘s for its safeness to environment and health. Otherwise Hoppe‘s is a great product too. Haven’t used any of the others.

Hoppes #9 is a dedicated powder solvent, so a separate oil must be used. Ballistol is a do-it-all product and can be used by itself.
In the Army I kept a small bottle of Ballistol in my weapons cleaning kit 'cause the mil spec CLP was crap.

Hoppes #9 is a dedicated powder solvent. It does not protect against corrosion. After cleaning your bore with Hoppes #9 you have to use a gun oil to protect it.

CLP’s are more CONVENIENT for defense forces weapons than Civilians weapons.
A good bore solvent, some elbow grease and then any decent oil final patch is all there is to it.

I have not been able to come up with a simple way to compare lubrication properties. Cleaning and corrosion protection were priorities for me.

I always use a brass bore brush, so no big deal for me. I shoot and clean my guns often keeping a fairly fresh application of oil on at all times. So corrosion has never been an issue for me. The biggest and most important thing for a C.L.P. to do for me is lubrication and wear resistance on metal to metal contact point like the slide rails and the barrel and lugs. Clenzoil is far superior for that than Ballistol.

Good video! I use Ballistol mainly for cleaning guns that have been fired with corrosive priming, mixing it 10:1 with water. I don't mind the smell at all. I also use the Ed's Red (no Acetone) mixture for cleaning as well.

You can buy a Hoppes #9 air freshener, but I don't think Ballistol is gonna compete with them in that market!
It's medical grade "white oil" a type of liquid paraffin. Food safe!

They all do certain things better than others. Ballistol is obviously some good stuff. As is BreakFree. I’m one of those weird guys that actually enjoys cleaning my guns often so I never really let it get burnt powder buildup or fowling. My dad always used Ballistol on his black powder rifles. Worked great. I’m in Florida so extreme low temps aren’t a thing for me. Lubricity is what I look for. And I believe Clenzoil gets the win for lubricity after watching quite a few tests.

I can't speak for other channels, but my tests are simple and easily reproducible by anyone.

I mix up Ed's Red Bore Solvent, sans Acetone and Lanolin, for $0.23/ounce. It works as good or better than any other CLP I've tried. Equal parts Low Order Mineral Spirits, K-1 Heater Kerosene and Dexron II, IIe, III ATF.

I think black powder shooters mix it with water to clean their bores.
you had better luck with ballistol than I have had. Far as I can tell it doesn't do much of anything. I make my own CLP for pennies an ounce. never have found anything better. no secret it is called Ed's Red and the formula is maybe a century old at this point. look it up. I maker it buy the gallon and am always running out cause everyone I know grabs a pint or two.. Whatever you use think what a gallon of it would cost LOL

I've seen two of your videos, this one and the one you brushed the product while on the burnt powder. Neither is an accurate way to clean your gun. Most people will run a bore brush through the barrel, to loosen the powder. Then use the solvent on a patch. I find your technique a little backwards. Just saying.
The brass brush simulates the bore brush.
