I'm definitely a Ballistol man! It's biodegradable, non-carcinogenic and safe for skin which gives a little "peace of mind" especially if you clean your guns a lot. Not to mention it cleans well and provides excellent long-term storage. It's also pretty efficient and once you start using it, firearms get easier to clean after each additional application. I recommend the 16 oz. non-aerosol can with sprayer. A little goes a long way and the 16 oz. can lasts a long while. It also comes in wipes which are handy at the range. Only negative is it can be a little hard to find at your LGS, but is readily available online.
I use it as an antiseptic on light wounds. The Imperial German Army Medical Corps used Ballistol for numerous topical treatments of wounds and abrasions in WWI, and this practice spilled over into WWII as well.

I have been shooting and collecting firearms for 30 years. I have tried all of the products you mentioned. Once I started using Ballistol, I never used anything else. Works great on every thing from my black powder flintlock to my AR-15...
Ballistol . . . hands down. I own numerous other solvents and lubricants, but I can [always] ALWAYS (always) count on Ballistol for everything gun related. It's great for wood stocks and leather stuff too! *I also like spraying all the outer components with it if I'm going to put something in the safe for a while/for storage -- the little film it makes is perfect for protecting against rust and other nonsense and wipes away easily when you're ready to take something out shoot. Ballistol bandwagon all the way.
Rem Oil seems to be even better since they took the Teflon out of it and tweaked the formula. It just has a texture and feel that’s more to my liking, but that’s just my experience. The Teflon particles were always sort of a marketing gig to be honest. That being said, I’ve been part of a Ballistol family for generations and it’s still my favorite.
I'm kinda fond of Hoppes. I like the smell. For lube, if it gets hot, such as the barrel, I use Archoil. If it's not a part that gets hot, I like Rydol. Outside, I may hit it with Ballistol if I'm in the mood.
I trust Ballistol but also use CLP....The CLP I think cleans a little better faster, but if you let stuff soak in Ballistol for a bit...it works great and don't make the house smell like you were cleaning your guns..I like the smell but most women don't .... So since a divorce is more costly than Ballistol I tend to use that...!
The best CLP I've ever used is Ed Red's Bore Cleaner recipe sans the Acetone. The best lube I've ever used is synthetic Motor Oil. I make my own patches out of old tshirts. Just cut them up while watching TV with the wife in the evenings.
Agreed on firearms owners always believing their selected cleaner/oil is the best, facts are you as a owner are the primary cleaner via elbow grease and being pro active in keeping the guns clean, as for lubrication and rust protection all will suffice- again as the owner you are what keeps the gun safe from rust by smart storage etc, good video

Funny I have all 4 right now for the reasons you mentioned in the first minute and a half or so into the video. I was always a Rem Oil guy and got to where I couldn't find it. Tried Break Free and it was fine. A bit wet in my experience but it got the job done. However the Lucas was the trendy pick at my local gun store so I bought a can of that to see if it was better. It's about the same. I let Hickok45 talk me into a can of Ballistol. It's fine too. At this point I have all four and I have various firearms that I either shoot or don't that are lubricated with whatever I happened to grab out of my bag at the time and haven't had a single issue. Just hose the pistol down, let it sit for a bit and wipe with a cloth rag. No problem.
I've used most of those cleaners and I don't think I really have a favorite. However when it comes to Lube I absolutely love Lucus gun oil. It stays put even when getting the gun really hot doing mag dumps.
Agreed. Nothing stays put for lube like the blue color Lucas extreme. But I still use CLP or Ballistol for general corrosion resistance external wipe downs since the Lucas is too thick and tacky for that, not to mention expensive.
In 60+ years of shooting and cleaning, my conclusion for the best are as follows: #1 Clenzoil #2 Ballistol #3 Lucas Oil Extreme Duty CLP Everything else was "Close, but no cigar." as Richard Boone said in the film Big Jake.

The wind shifted and they found me on my hands and knees still keeping cars off the hoses. But, the chlorine gas really did a job on me. So, the actual smell is of no consequence, but the density of the fumes, and it's content is. Eezox is a great protection product, but one wiff of it can drop me to my knees. Hoppe's will make me so sick. But Clenzoil, Ballistol, Lucas, and the old discontinued RIG #2 are fine. The latter I use on my weapons with painted frames, like Heritage Rough Riders and my Henry 22 pump. Clenzoil can remove, or blister paint. It's only shortcoming.
I use to use Super Quick Clean Gun but its shelf life is only like 5 minutes. It separates and changes in the bottle from gold clear to dirty black. Owner of Super QCG knows about the product issue but tells customers: "Do my job for me and go ahead and run it through a filter and shake the jug up good." Hence why I don't carry ANY of their products in my Gunshop anymore. When I buy a product, I want it to be Good To Go out the box! I don't wanna do the Hokie Pokie and a bunch of steps in order to make the product work flawlessly.
They're all good options. Clean your gun after you shoot and you eont have any problems. Hell I maintained three 870 Wingmasters we used for salt water duck hunting back in the 70s with WD40. Never had an issue. No rust, no gumming, no freezing. Those guns are still around today.
Been using RemOil and Hoppes9 for probably 40 years, give or take...I have a can of Safariland CLP for tougher cleans, but am usually pretty compulsive about shoot then clean, so RemOil and the RemOil moisture block, are what I always have on my bench and in my range case.
Has REM OIL kept up its quality since Remington's Bankruptcy Liquidation & Dismemberment ? When I now Google "Best Gun Oils," REM OIL rarely appears anymore. Your thoughts ?

My 2 cents I deep clean metal parts with Break Parts Cleaner $2.40 for 18oz I deep clean polymer parts with mineral spirits. $3.00 for 2 pints I live in a hot state so I lubricate in the summer with mystic jt6 Green grease, $4.00 tube. In the winter with Motorkote $30.00 quart, or 10w30 high mileage synthetic oil $35.00 gallon. Just me, if it works for my high use engine it works for my gun.
I use Wilson Combats lube oil and Infinit's blue snot. The best stuff for antifriction and heat. I use Hornady One lube, NOT the Clean and Lube. Ballistol is horrendous in friction and wear tests. If you really want to protect your gun then use what the high-end pistol manufacturers recommend. I'm dealing with $5000 to $9000 guns and I am particular about protecting my equipment. I also use these on my Hayes, MPA DS9, and my Smiths and CZs.

I’ve used many including Ballostol, Break Free, Breakthrough, Lucas, Slip2000, Weapon Shield, and Wilson Combat Ulta Lube II line. I keep my ultrasound filled with Lucas cleaner and use that line the most. All seem good. I did a heat experiment with Ballistol and another- put a drop of each on metal, then heated to fail with a flame. Ballostol turned to a thick jelly pretty quickly while others thinned. I avoided using Ballistol on my AR after that. But my wife ultimately banned use of Ballistol.
Diesel for cleaning. Works better than any of these emulsified, watered down, "odorless" rip offs. Less than $1.00 per quart. STP or ATF for lube. 1 can lasts for years.
Cleaners clean, oils and all in ones lubricate. So use a cleaner and then follow up with oil. Alcohol and mineral oil will work too (and are super cheap). Full disclosure, I have a cupboard full of gun cleaners and oils all overpriced and still use and buy more.
If EEZOX is properly applied, as in clean completely, apply light coat, dry overnight, wipe off and repeat EEZOX will SEVERELY limit corrosion on stuff like even 1095, high quality forged pattern welded steels , 01, and A2 tool steel. I've used it on anything steel since 1987. It works GREAT. Wear gloves and have some air moving around when you do. Spray cans are wasteful , drip cans control that, and trust me once you get the metal cleaned completely, and get EEZOX established it is an eye opener. 😍
A few years ago I purchased some Ballistol based on great recommendations. I got the manual pump spray can. That thing leaked on me from day one, whether it was standing up, or being top heavy with the pump sprayer on top what it loved to to was topple over then it would really leak. Over the next year I did my best to contain it including getting a plastic bin to keep it in but that stuff flooded my chemical cabinet and dripped onto three shelf levels and a dozen other cans. I didn't think I minded the smell of Ballistol but after getting hit in the face with that smell every time I opened the cabinet I started to get sick of it. I eventually just cleaned it all up and threw it away. It was truly a waste of money and I can't even tell you how well it worked because the whole experience was dominated by the mess and smell I had to endure. It wasn't inexpensive. Right now I've got mineral oil to coat and M-pro 7 to clean, seems to work and never spilled a drop.
Ballistol is true cleaner & lube with a mind of its own. it knew your chemical cabinet needed cleaning & lube so it just couldn't take it anymore waiting for you so the Ballistol took action. You should be thankful that the Ballistol was looking out for you. In my gun safe I just keep a can of Ballistol cracked open with all my firearms & I haven't cleaned a gun in many, many years. I just let the Ballistol do its thing. Couldn't ask for a better gun cleaner.
The Lucas bore cleaner works really well I take a straw that I cut down sit the straw in the container then put my finger over the end of the straw kinda use it like a dropper then I either drop it in the barrel and roll it around or drop it on a patch and run it through the barrel and let it sit for 30 minutes or so then use bore snakes seems like Lucas products work really well but I use other products as well nothing wrong with your own cleaner or lube what ever you like to use it’s your castle
I went through so many Gosh damn cleaners, oil, clp.... Tried practically everything until I found Clenzoil. Clenzoil is absolutely amazing for quick clp cleanings and storage. For more detailed applications then it's going to be either corrosion x clp OR a detailed solvent cleaning with shooters lube solvent and then corrosion x for lubrication and storage.

Every scientific test shows that Corrosion X has the best rust protection, by far. There’s a reason that airlines spray it by the 55 gallon drum into the insides of their planes.
I have used ballistol all on most of my firearms for years now, but I’m getting ready to purchase a new rifle that has a cerakote finish on the barrel, is ballistol safe To use on a cerakote finish?
I have found in a few Google searches that ballistic did not affect the cerakote finish on firearms from several owners. You may want to try testing it first on a small non visible spot like inside the frame or slide first depending on the type firearm you are cleaning.
I'm moving on from the clp for now. I'm having issues with a large amount of lead in my Taurus tx 22's barrels. So I'm going to a Shooters choice MC 7 bore cleaner cause of my lead build up. What do you think about Break Free performance synthetic gun oil for the lube and protection part of cleaning my firearms? Thanks William

Been using Hoppe's #9 gun cleaner & Hoppe's Elite gun oil for 50 years now. I'm too old to change now, as they have always worked perfectly. & I have 50 year old guns that still look like new. But I don't own any kydex / Tupperware square black Block guns that were made from Grandma's old Spaghetti strainer. With those guns what difference does it make, the finishes are all ugly, coated and don't take oils well anyway, & the slide only runs on 2" metal rails on the frame, so again a mute point, any lubes will work on that.
@iPac9mm I never had any issues with them and I really like being able to breathe while cleaning guns in my chair on my coffee table. It’s actually helped as my fiancé now cleans her own guns too. It’s not that I don’t like cleaning guns it’s just I don’t like cleaning other peoples guns.
The Hoppe's gun oil is nothing but repackaged mineral oil. It's a poor lubricant, freezes solid and is a poor corrosion inhibitor. See the Project Farm test video.

Clean your gun with Ballistol then clean the barrel and action with Hoppe's #9 and see for yourself how dirty your gun was.
Break free CLP is a mild cleaner, so it won’t ruin the metal. It is a good lubricant and an outstanding preservative from rust.

I agree with ya on the scent. Most of them are easy to get used to but some can smell kinda funky!

Try some Clenzoil Field and Range cleaner lube. It is awesome.

I’ve never used a firearm extensively with Ballistol but I will be switching over to Aegis gun cleaning products soon.

Careful. I've had parts rust after using their "gun oil" it definitely lubes things up, just doesn't protect. Makes my knives fly open though.

Try Clenzoil. It is minty fresh!
Give Eezox a try. It doesn't smell the best but works better than almost all other products I've ever used.

Spray cans are wasteful , drip cans control that, and trust me once you get the metal cleaned completely, and get EEZOX established it is an eye opener. 😍
A few years ago I purchased some Ballistol based on great recommendations. I got the manual pump spray can. That thing leaked on me from day one, whether it was standing up, or being top heavy with the pump sprayer on top what it loved to to was topple over then it would really leak. Over the next year I did my best to contain it including getting a plastic bin to keep it in but that stuff flooded my chemical cabinet and dripped onto three shelf levels and a dozen other cans. I didn't think I minded the smell of Ballistol but after getting hit in the face with that smell every time I opened the cabinet I started to get sick of it. I eventually just cleaned it all up and threw it away. It was truly a waste of money and I can't even tell you how well it worked because the whole experience was dominated by the mess and smell I had to endure. It wasn't inexpensive. Right now I've got mineral oil to coat and M-pro 7 to clean, seems to work and never spilled a drop.
Sounds like a good combination! The only Ballistol that I have is an aerosol can that works well but I'm primarily still using CLP.
Ballistol is true cleaner & lube with a mind of its own. it knew your chemical cabinet needed cleaning & lube so it just couldn't take it anymore waiting for you so the Ballistol took action. You should be thankful that the Ballistol was looking out for you. In my gun safe I just keep a can of Ballistol cracked open with all my firearms & I haven't cleaned a gun in many, many years. I just let the Ballistol do its thing. Couldn't ask for a better gun cleaner.

The Lucas bore cleaner works really well I take a straw that I cut down sit the straw in the container then put my finger over the end of the straw kinda use it like a dropper then I either drop it in the barrel and roll it around or drop it on a patch and run it through the barrel and let it sit for 30 minutes or so then use bore snakes seems like Lucas products work really well but I use other products as well nothing wrong with your own cleaner or lube what ever you like to use it’s your castle

When I was in the Army they insisted on using CLP to clean weapons. I kept a secret stash of Ballistol and used that.

I went through so many Gosh damn cleaners, oil, clp.... Tried practically everything until I found Clenzoil. Clenzoil is absolutely amazing for quick clp cleanings and storage. For more detailed applications then it's going to be either corrosion x clp OR a detailed solvent cleaning with shooters lube solvent and then corrosion x for lubrication and storage.
I agree with ya on Clenzoil. It's pretty much my go to for cleaning videos.

Every scientific test shows that Corrosion X has the best rust protection, by far. There’s a reason that airlines spray it by the 55 gallon drum into the insides of their planes.

I use Gun-Werkz ( non-toxic ) as a cleaner they support Wounded Warrior Project and Weapon Shield (non-toxic) as a lubricant.

I have used ballistol all on most of my firearms for years now, but I’m getting ready to purchase a new rifle that has a cerakote finish on the barrel, is ballistol safe To use on a cerakote finish?
I have found in a few Google searches that ballistic did not affect the cerakote finish on firearms from several owners. You may want to try testing it first on a small non visible spot like inside the frame or slide first depending on the type firearm you are cleaning.

With all due respect Remington GUN OIL is not a CLEANER. Remington does make a GUN ACTION CLEANER for gun CLEANING. Just sayin. First clean then lube.
I have been using Ballistol for a long time and I use Mobile #1 on my slides never had a problem.
I'm moving on from the clp for now. I'm having issues with a large amount of lead in my Taurus tx 22's barrels. So I'm going to a Shooters choice MC 7 bore cleaner cause of my lead build up. What do you think about Break Free performance synthetic gun oil for the lube and protection part of cleaning my firearms?

Get a can of Safariland CLP or a can of Ballistol, a pack of cotton cleaning patches, a 9mm bore snake, some q tips and you are set.

It isnt specifically a solvent but it will clean and lube.
Been using Hoppe's #9 gun cleaner & Hoppe's Elite gun oil for 50 years now. I'm too old to change now, as they have always worked perfectly. & I have 50 year old guns that still look like new. But I don't own any kydex / Tupperware square black Block guns that were made from Grandma's old Spaghetti strainer. With those guns what difference does it make, the finishes are all ugly, coated and don't take oils well anyway, & the slide only runs on 2" metal rails on the frame, so again a mute point, any lubes will work on that.
Which would you recommend for a blued finish ?

@iPac9mm I never had any issues with them and I really like being able to breathe while cleaning guns in my chair on my coffee table. It’s actually helped as my fiancé now cleans her own guns too. It’s not that I don’t like cleaning guns it’s just I don’t like cleaning other peoples guns.

None of the cleaners you mention clean as well as Hoppe's #9 or Lube as good as Hoppe's Gun OIl
I’ve had great luck with most of them. My go to is Aegis Gun Care now.
The Hoppe's gun oil is nothing but repackaged mineral oil. It's a poor lubricant, freezes solid and is a poor corrosion inhibitor. See the Project Farm test video.

I've never used remoil to clean, except at the range for other people's guns if they're sticky just to free them up.
It works but isn’t as good of a cleaner as CLP or Clenzoil I
