    The 24v cummins is my favorite sounding cummins. The pump is actually pretty simple to work on. I've taken several apart.

    You can modify quite a bit of parameters with the Quadzilla on the VP trucks. I’ve been happy with it. I haven’t tried an Edge tuner.

    My 05 had 3 fuel filters a big 5 micron water separator with drain and a 2 micron cat and a 5 micron factory filter with water separator with light on dash for water and a Fleese intank fuel gear motor pumps which brought the fuel pressure up to 21 lb from 5 lb from factory pump.

    Fact is, hands down after my experience of tearing up trucks for 25 years skidding and hauling firewood, the gmt400 and square body chevys, Ford's OBS and bullnose, and first gen dodge Cummins are the most durable out there

    I'll admit to waiting the entire show for the 06 5.9 to be mentioned. No luck, not sure if that's good or bad. I've got a SRW & DRW 06 5.9, about 280 kms on each, cold air kit on DRW otherwise stock.
    I have a spin on fuel filter kit on both but no pump. Been investigating the FASS system. Would it be worth it?

    I enjoy your podcasts and always happy to listen when your new ones come out. I have a Ram 06 QCLB I have done a lot of mods to. FASS installed and stock fuel filter delete. Banks cold air intake and turbo back straight through exhaust. Banks techni cooler. Mishimoto trans cooler. 3 row aluminum radiator. Redhead steering gear BD steering stabilizer. New BD 48RE trans with billet 3 disk torque con. and input shaft w/ tap shifter. Refreshed transfer case and drive shafts. Spoologic 64 mm turbo and new exhaust manifold. Edge CST 3 Evolution tuner usually set on economy because fuel is expensive. Next week I will be ordering DDP 90 HP injectors and installing head studs, pushrods, and 103 valve springs. I tow a 16000 lb. toy hauler in the mountains between Nevada and California. My EGTs are always high when I pull hills. Early next year I plan on purchasing a compound turbo setup. I have looked at ATS 3000/5000, Power Driven Diesel and Diesel Power Source. I like certain things about all of them. I can't make up my mind on any one of them. Can you get a representative from these and other companies to go into detail about why I should buy their's over the next company's. Thank you for all of your hard work.

      Don’t go with ats. I wouldn’t touch anything they make, If I was going to comp turbo my 5.9 I’d go with the power driven diesel kit every time.

    Love mine 2015 6.7 3500 at 200,000 and the only problem I had was the def tank , I did swap the torque converter to a triple disk and I pull heavy with

    I had a 2000 Ram 2500 QCSB 5.9 5 speed with 318k, a 2003 Ram 2500 QCLB 5.9 6 speed with 500k, and my current 2006 Ram 2500 QCSB 5.9 auto… They’ve all been great trucks for me and they all have had the power turned up. I personally like the Dodge trucks as much as the engine. Any 03-07 5.9 (in good condition) is a solid purchase in my opinion as long as you don’t get bit with the valve seat issue. Anything newer than a 5.9 and I would probably be driving a 6.7 Ford to be honest. Takes too much work to make a 6.7 Cummins as reliable as a 5.9, it’s basically the 6.0 mentality owning one… “Well once you delete this, swap to a fixed geometry turbo, install head studs, and do this this this and this, it’s great”. Or, you can just buy a 6.7 Ford or 5.9 Dodge and drive it. Shouldn’t have to fix your tools to use them with peace of mind, beyond little nuances. Really hard to go wrong with a 5.9 unless you’re buying something that’s already in poor mechanical shape.

    I bought a 3/4 ton long bed 5.9 12 valve for 19500 and I bought a 05 3500 4x4 4 door long bed dullay and both these trucks had manual trans and 4x4 selector and the 92 a great truck and the 05 that Iam still driving with 152k great truck too and both stock .

    The very best cummins is the one that you get and nothing going bad . My new 92 great 12 valve 5 speed manual with locking hubs and after 185K I sold it and bought a new 05 and it had 6 speed manual 4 door and long bed dullay and I probably should not say this but it has been a great truck and both trucks were stock on my 05 I put a intank Fleese lift pump and that’s about oh I put a lift pump gauge in to keep track of psi.

    I was not aware of all the variation in the 5.9 common rail. It makes me wonder how much power my 2006 can handle.

      1k horse and under is general rule for most all stock internal 5.9/6.7

    Years ago at work, we had an 05 crew cab short bed. It took 3 engines to get to 250k on the body. After it blew the third engine, they junked it.

    I love my 2001 1/2 (4 wheel disc) Dana 80, Dodge ram, 2500 2 Wheel dr, 5 speed NV 4500! Long bed
    24 valve yes it has the VP 44, but that’s really not the problem. The problem was the lift pump on these trucks get you a FASS SYSTEM and make sure you keep extra lubricant in your diesel as Insurance. Outboard motor oil with TW3! Minor mods 23 MPG

    I got a question on the 2017 and on in the six seven Cummins does the grid heater screw come off and fly into the cylinder like in The gales Banks commercial that I've seen on TH-cam is that true I'm really curious about that

      Short answer is Yes, it can happen. I read about it in the forums long before the bank’s infomercials. Personally, I don’t run my grid heater very much and check the connection/insulator occasionally to make sure it still feels tight.
      Fwiw, the $1,000 bank intake isn’t the only way to “fix” the grid heater bolt issue.

    His “facts” were all anecdotal, but his conclusions I have heard from others as well. Regardless, he was fun to listen to. I love Cummmins, but it was also encouraging to hear some positive comments re my beloved 6 liter. 6.4 is a beauty but a heart-breaker engine wise. Someone needs to figure out a solution. I know nothing of Duramax, but was fascinated with the conversation. My Bowtie bros got some interesting engines to ponder over!

    2021 L5p here after 2 years of research. I have scoured the internet and forums asking about "broken crankshafts
    ". Vinny's shop is apparently the only one that is seeing them? Many of the previous Durmax engines did have crank issues but nothing on the L5P. Hell Gale Banks tried to blow up an L5P and could not. Did not buy the 6.7 Ford because of the CP4 and Fords previous diesel track record. Did not but the Dodge (Fiat RAM) because of the 68RFE, stupid high parts costs, and head gaskets problems. Love the L5P but sure do hope the crank does not snap in half. I'm not interested in an older truck, I like all the cameras, the power, bells and whistles, 11 mpg towing 15k, and 21 mpg on flat highway not towing.

    I feel like you guys never mentioned the 4th gen cummins. Currently own a 2013 Megacab 2500 with Calibrated Power tuning. No issues yet. Use it to tow my 5th wheel. Any specific 4th gen years to stay away from?

      Definitely talked way more about fords then decent about duramax then almost nothing about cummins more chit chat than info on the cummins in my opinion

      @@bradytaylor9527 I agree. It was more like he personally lacked Duramax experience so he talked about how he hated working on them. This guy answers the phone and posts on Facebook. He talks about broken cranks on L5P's yet there is nothing about this online or in the L5P forums. The experts are the guys actually working on the trucks, not the talkers. The ones that can't make is as mechanics are the ones dealing with customers.

    I loved my 1992 I bought new for 19500 bucks but if I could of got it to ride better I would still have it and it rode great when or pulling a camper so that is why I bought a new 05 3500 4x4 4 door long bed dullay and rides like a cast .

    My friend own’s a hot tub store in Albuquerque and his 2015 GMC 2500 with a Duramax with a 6 speed Allison 1000 transmission has over 500,000 miles on it . All almost of those miles pulling a 35’ flat bed trailer to Oregon and California to pick up Hot Tubs from two different HotTub manufactures. Duramax all the way!

    I realize this is a year old but i just watched part 1 and 2 all the way thru. Cummins is where its at. Im a tech, i went to diesel school. Ive been in ‘em since before it was even ‘cool’. Ive got a sticker that even says ‘ i was cummins before cummins was even cool’. There just simple. The work. They are an industrial grade diesel engine.
    Ive had 6 first gen 12 valves and a 3rd gen 5.9 24v and my current truck is the one I’m keeping forever, my mint perfect ‘02 24v 5.9 HO 6 speed long bed extended cab single real wheel that still has under 100,000 miles! 56 block, dana 80 rear disk breaks, all the good parts! The best of everything no rust not damage no nothing!! Pretty much the exact same truck he described to the T. And the funny thing is to, I’ve done just about everything he listed off HA! Its not on 40’s not yet anyways, I’ve been very modest and tasteful in doing to
    Much to you cant go back on, i mean this truck is perfect and low milage. Its clean, Its perfect, its mint. I get people trying to buy it off me all the time. Its like go away, its funny when they approach you thinking there gunna smchooze and sneak one over on you snd take a unicorn away from you for a few thousand bucks over kbb/nada like HA ya right!
    They are getting really really hard to find. I got extremely lucky when i found this truck. Actually the truck found me. I had posted a wanted add on CL snd the guy called me. Original 2 owner truck. Garage kept all its life, meticulously maintained, was all 100% stock and un molested. Old man grandpa truck. No rust no damage, no snow no salt no hard winter nothing, even the interior smells like that brand new truck smell
    From the 2000’s still! I take really food care if it, its garaged all the time, it doesn’t get driven in any snow and it gets babied with only 90,000 miles on it. When it hits 100k im going to p pump it! Ive already started putting togther everything i need! Its a holy grail truck for sure, when watching him list off what he’d want in a dodge I’m sitting here going, thats my truck exactly!

    Sorry but I own a 2018 and have had so many issues with the emission crap but this episode really didn’t help me. More just story telling and chatting about dream trucks. That doesn’t help me. If you are going to interview someone you have to keep them on point and draw back in when they wander

    I had a 15 6.7 cummins and it was the worst truck I've ever owned. My 6.0 powerstroke has given me less issues. It dropped a valve at 192k miles. Regular maintenance and never pushed hard. All highway miles. 33k in parts from cummins to fix it so I opted for a reman. Spent over $20k after labor and the new engine burned a quart of oil every 1000 miles. Then I got blacklisted..
    I'm sure some cummins are good but I've had bad luck with them

      Got a lemon bro… same year as yours, bought almost 7 yrs ago, 278,000 miles. Best truck ever, never let me down and has been driven in some of the worst conditions imaginable. I’m about to drop $30k in it, in hopes of getting another 7 yrs.

      That's the hardest way you could run a diesel... you probably broke in the reman like it was a gas motor, that was what I was going to do till Adapt Ape channel posted a video on how to properly seat the rings aka brake in a motor to prevent oil consumption. Get it to operating temp ,hook it to a trailer as close to max gross as possible and put 500-1000mi on it plan for some grades mid to late in the trip.

      I've had a number of cummins from 3rd 4th and 5th gen and they have been the most reliable vehicles I could have ever asked for. Your story is unfortunate and unique.

      I have a 2013 6.7 cummins and 2007 6.0 powerstroke. Both with around 200 thousand miles. Constantly working on the cummins to keep it on the road. 0 issue with my 6.0. So I haven't had any luck with a cummins.

    Hey Patrick, so I did want to clarify something that was said on your podcast. I live in and am resident of the state of Oregon. The state statute actually classifies diesel not a type 1 flammable liquid. Only class 1 flammable liquids are not self served. So diesel in the state of Oregon is actually legal to pump yourself. Whoever told him that a gas attendant is required to pump diesel gave him false information. Just want to make that clarification. Love watching and listening to your podcast especially when I'm doing long drives. Keep it up, thanks.

    Im curious now, ive been watching The Diesel Podcast for s few weeks now. I just watched these three episodes and lived it! I like that guy Vinny!
    I was reading thru the description on the video, and where it says under ‘produced by’ theres ‘Tyler Loewen of 23 diesel’ is that the same 23 diesel in Grand Junction colorado? Is thats who’s putting this all together? Heh i just moved to grand junction colorado from gunnison CO. Like i said I’ve been watching the diesel podcast now for a few weeks and kinda new. I was driving around last week and happened to make a wrong turn and drove past 23 diesel on industrial street in GJ i think it was and decided to stop into the 23 diesel shop in GJ and check it out cause i was curious. The young chick behind the counter couldn’t tell me much, but… i could of swore ive heard someone say colorado a few times on the podcast?

    Im a diesel mechanic and if you listen hes just a load the parts cannon guy the worst 2 stories he blatantly told were the one about putting 3 vp44 pumps on in a day not talking about looking for possible causes just keep throwing parts at it thats not right same when talking about the 7.3 he owned why are you just putting multiple transmissions in it when it was fine before the wreck something happened and you never pinpointed the why? Thats crazy and its bad buisness the fact that hed go that route on his own vehicle is very telling in itself

    Guy gets asked a straightforward question and then goes on a 15 minute rant about a repair he did once that sucked. Then gets asked the same question again and just runs on and on about past stories 😂 dude should’ve gone into politics.

    If I can do a couple of things to make my 2021 6.7 last without a delete for now, what would it be?

      manually regen, oil change more than regularly, drain water fuel filter every month, use fuel additives.

      @@d0uble_O So if I manually regen that would require a Bank Derringer type device, correct? I’ve done a oil change at 2,000 then 10,000 and I will do every 8k going forward was my plan. So do I just open the rear fuel filter drain and drain about a couple of cups worth of fuel out each month? I’ve used Hot Shot secrets EDT from the 2nd ever fill up. So far with 17k miles the truck has been perfect. I would expect anything less with that mileage but who know. I changed both fuel filters at 10k and will do every 10k. Air filter at oil change interval.
      Am I doing too much or is there such a thing?

      @@DavidBrown-jt7yi Ive notice that i need to do my oil change at around 5k..its a big difference once i do. Rotella T6 5w40.
      Manual regen should show up on your setting on your truck.. youtube has some videos. If you dont see it, i would ask your ford dealer to add it to your menu. I also drain all the rear water filter when i do.

    This man has never owned a DURAMAX and spewed mad opinions on how bad they are I don't get it ,a reliable 600hp Duramax truck is so easy to attain over any junk 6.0 powerstroke c'mon now let's be realistic buddy....and most the time you don't have to pull the whole cab off the frame

      He answers the phone, he freely admits that. Almost everyone claims to have been a "mechanic
      ' but what does that really mean? Talk is cheap and this guy is an expert on keeping his cigar lit. I spent 30 years as an ASE Certified Master Technician with a CA Smog License. Talk is cheap.

      @@TheDieselPodcast I appreciate your invitation. I watch your podcasts to learn and they have been excellent for the most part, certainly better than most.
      I started my career as a mechanic in 1976 and retired in 2010. My experience started out with gasoline powered vehicles (Mazdas, Hondas, and Toyotas) from 1976 through 1990. Then I went to work for local government maintaining a fleet that contained everything from Seagrave Fire Apparatus to Police cars and regular cars. We had 5 and 10 yard dump trucks, Vac-con's, Street Sweepers, Tractors, Loaders, a Fuel Truck, and Park maintaining equipment. We also had a Bookmobile, Police Mobil Command Unit, and a Swat Vehicle. During my career I was required to possess a California Test and Repair Smog License, I was an ASE Certified Master Lever Technician in both light and medium duty vehicles.
      I do not feel that I have much to add to the podcast that relates to the subject matter (light duty diesel trucks) due to most of our fleet 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton light duty trucks were equipped with gas engines. Thus my reason to watch your podcasts. I researched for 2 years prior to deciding on my 2021 3500 L5P (my first diesel truck). Your podcast and others like Gale Banks YT Videos were helpful in that research.
      When you have an "expert" I would like to hear first hand about not how hard it is to change injectors because that was not his regular job, I want to hear from the guy who's job it is. I want to know how many L5P's crankshafts are breaking and why. I want to know how to make factory parts live, not simply tossing them and going aftermarket. Your expert did provide a lot of information on worthwhile upgrades and service. He skipped over the root cause of CP4 failures (the roller turning 90 degrees against the cam). Then when he admitted in the early years that he did not know what a diesel particulate filter was I was amazed. Understanding these systems is the key to success. Let's hear from the guys in the trenches that know what DPF, SCR, DEF, 9th injectors, etc are and what their purposes are and how to make them live. Let's hear about why diesel fuel is injected into a cylinder on the exhaust stroke and what that does to an engine. Let's get some real facts and try to avoid opinions (if that is even possible). Vinny has some great stories and good experience but at the end of the day he answers the phone and trolls forums on Facebook.
