    Thank you for these podcast and thank you Vinny for sharing your knowledge and presenting the clear facts. What shops in Texas would you recommend and are there any in the Fort Worth area? It was hard for me to take a guy seriously who kept saying “I deal with facts” which was promptly followed by 100 opinion based information without any actual real world data. I appreciate the info and personal experiences, but if it’s facts that are presented, it needs to be supported by actual objective data. End of story….

      I think you’re being a little harsh for no reason. Opinions are valuable. Vinny’s opinion is valuable due to his experience and position. You speak of “data” like there is some database out there that lists every truck ever purchased, what failed, a detailed description of the conditions, maintenance done and driver habits. Good luck finding this “data” source! And Ford/Chevy/Ram aren’t giving warranty data away. Get real. The best source is an honest mechanic with real world experience on thousands of trucks and connections with other mechanics to reference against. In other words, people like Vinny.
      You should go buy Consumer Reports, lol. I’ll listen to Vinny.

    • @zachflath2958
      @zachflath2958 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simply stating that information that’s presented as “fact”, needs data to be verified is harsh? Get real.
      Everybody has their own subjective opinions and biases for a variety of reasons. At the end of the day that’s exactly what they are. Opinions. Which are NOT facts. They are 2 completely different things. It’s Common sense.
      You can go by whoever you want dude. Vinny or anyone else who expresses their biased opinions, I couldn’t care less.
      The fact that you thought my comment was harsh tells me your probably in the market for an electric car, not a working diesel truck…..

    • @vinnyhimes1190
      @vinnyhimes1190 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zachflath2958 you're absolutely right, unfortunately this is a podcast, not a seminar with power point presentations. If you'd like us to do more of a seminar with power point presentations, I can compile the data quite simply by going through our QuickBooks and showing you what parts we are ordering for which trucks with real world numbers. Due to the volume of work we run through this shop there's mountains of hard data.
      If Patrick decides to go down that rabbit hole I will gladly put it together. That's not been the focus of his show though, and it is after all his show. It's completely unscripted, I never know the point of discussion until the camera starts rolling. I've only been a guest on his show one time where he asked me to talk about a certain truck and I brought the hard data to the show as he requested. In most of these episodes I have no clue what we will be discussing. My very first episode ever we actually didn't even talk diesel trucks, we talked about guns and hunting.

    Early 12v Cummins with the old 618 is a awesome combo once the transmission is updated. At least at stock power level. Of all the trucks, I havent had to do a lot to those. The electrical system is noisy and causes some problems on early 24v trucks and the VP44 can be a problem if the lift pump isnt upgraded. I love the Duramaxes, I havent had to do much to those, especially the earlier ones. Injectors due to bad fuel at worst. Later Duramaxes have some issues that people call me all the time about before they head up to the dealer just to find a way to limp it in. Those, were under warrenty and ended up at the dealer. So, couldnt speak on those. 6.0PSDs, they have a lot of problems due to three things:tunes, lack of maintenance, and shops that dont know the ins and outs of these. If you do maintenance and have a good tune its a great set up. But, I have heard from many people that know at other shops that the 6.7 PSD is the best since you just dont have to change anything. Leave the emissions on, do maintenance, drive it. Thats it. I dont have one, but I could appreciate that from a business standpoint.

    I’m my second diesel. I started with a 02 Cummins 6spd 2wd and now I have a 2011 LML Silverado that’s CP3 swapped, hands down my favorite truck so far (including all the gassers I’ve had). My question is what’s the best thing to do when it comes to letting my truck warm up before leaving? I’ve heard several different answers but I trust you guys and your opinions as I feel that you know what ur talking about. I’d like to know if there’s a general rule of thumb for summer vs winter idle times and so on. I use Amsoil oil with stiction eliminator and have converted the oil filter to a cat oil filter and have an airdog 150 and use HSS edt every tank and extreme diesel additive every oil change.

    Vinny, I really enjoy your varisity because it's exactly what most diesel owners need to hear not what they want to hear !
    I will strongly agree that the diesel trucks are not built to be the daily driver they were made to work . They can all be good trucks but you to know your truck and what are the normal known issues to watch out for .
    I have a 7.3 that I have owned for 20 years and taught all my children to drive in that vehicle ( 95' F350 super crew drwd 8' bed) . Had W250 2 in lift for 8 years and currently have the 08 F250 FX4 that I will probably never get rid of. Actually bought it from a dealership in GA . It's a Beast and was deleted at 12k miles currently has 240 k running a sct tuner. I use it mainly to pull my 37 ft all steel horse trailer it turns heads but it handles the 17k trailer like it was built for it. I may at some point will probably have to dump 20 grand into a motor but I love the truck. I have friends that drive the GM and Dodge trucks pulling their trailers and it just a personal preference for any of them. As a daily driver I have a 98 F250 with a custom 5.4 2 valve gas that is a work horse that if I bang or whatever it's no big deal .
    Don't let any of the comments get to you, because in the end not one of them sign your paycheck!!
    Keep on telling them the facts as you see them, because someone up in the rust belt would have a completely different set of items they see more regularly just because of it beiing a different environment. Kinda like you sweat as much in Alaska as in Florida but you ain't likely to freeze in Florida either !! The same principle applies to how and where the trucks are used.

    • @vinnyhimes1077
      @vinnyhimes1077 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a great truck! I have a 97 F-250 5 speed manual trans. I love it!
      I'm glad you still have yours and I also love the fact that you taught all your kids to drive in that truck. That's sentimental value that you can't put a price on!
      There are very few issues with these trucks. Stay on top of the oil changes, and fuel filters and you shouldn't have any major issues. Flush and refill the coolant every couple of years.
      The glow plug and starter relays can fail about every 100,000 miles give or take, easy fixes.
      You may have to replace the fuel injectors around 300,000 miles depending on fuel quality. Make sure you are getting fuel at very busy fuel stations. Those little mom and pops gas stations can cause issues if their fuel is sitting in the underground tanks for too long.

      That's not a bad idea, here at LFDP we love the 6.4L as it's kind of been deemed the bastard child of the diesel performance industry. We purchased a ragged out 6.4L from a Turkey Farm in North Carolina years ago and turned it into a sled pulling truck. We made it all the way to world finals in Texas that year with a truck literally comprised of used parts and junk laying around the shop. It was so fun beating those Shied and Haisley trucks with reused farm junk.
      If you are in the market to purchase a use 6.4L the main things to check for, blow by, remove drive the truck until it reaches normal operating temperature.
      (Easy way to know this is the thermostats will open and you will have heat blowing out of the interior vents.)
      Once you've achieved normal operating temperature pull over and carefully remove the oil fill cap, if the engine is shot and rings are severely worn, the oil fill cap will blow out of your hand. If the engine is good, you should be able to flip the oil fill cap over and set it on the oil fill spout upside down and it should just dance around. That means the rings are in good shape.
      Next thing to check, take a pair of gloves on the test drive, after you've confirmed there's no sever blow by, grab the upper radiator hose and give it a firm squeeze. If it's rock hard the truck has blown head gaskets. Walk away or be willing to spend about $8,000 to make it right.
      Once you've confirmed the head gaskets aren't blown, listen to the engine, if there's a lot of metallic rattle, like an old 7.3 that means the valve bridges and rocker arms are worn. This can be a pretty costly repair as well.
      If you are ever in the position where you are inspecting a truck you intend to purchase, feel free to give us a call and we will gladly help you avoid a lemon. 770-267-3322

    Hey @VinnyHimes. I'm in SE Michigan (Detroit Metro area) but I can get around the state or day in to Ohio if required. Do you know good trustable Diesel shops in my area?
    I have my first diesel truck, a very used LMM I flew down and drove back from Texas. It's an oil fields shuttle truck I got with 325k and last fall and now I've got 347k. She runs and works perfectly. I did have the dealer replace the Water Pump but dealerships are not going to work on it much longer and there's areas of it that they probably won't touch these days.
    I just installed the FASS I had on a shelf, waiting for warm weather. No interest building power but it clearly was ECU flashed. I don't know what tunr but I can clearly tell by some clues in observable call changes. It's still quick on 37 inch tires so maybe just a mild tone. I just want durability. I don't fault drive it but y goes towing or hauling every few days in the 3,000 to 9,000 lb range, often hundreds of miles, crisscrossing the Appalachians or just flat Midwest land. I just need to keep her up and running well for many years at roughly 40k per year

      @@vinnyhimes1077 I sold the truck. It was temporary while waiting on a 2024 Ford F350 to be built. The RAM is now living its best life in Destin, Florida with a 25 year old. Beaches, Girls and Bikinis crawling all over that thing, we should all be so lucky 😎

    I like the headlines of a lot of your pod cast, and watch them. But, get tired of your guest talking around in circles, taking time out to smoke a cigar, or have a drink. A lot ot the subject could be said in 4 or 5 sentences. Too much waisted time in most of them.

    compounds vs single turbo

      @vinnyhimes1077 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Compounds are amazing, I had the pleasure of owning a compound turboed 5.9L and also had another 5.9L with a big single. The compounds have such amazing street manners. Quick spool up and huge lungs on the top end to keep EGT's to a minimum.
