Spoiler alert. The Jaguar is about 400 pounds heavier than the fiberglass Vette. I have a 2000 XKR Supercharged convertible. Even that isn't faster than the Vette. However, it's presence and interior quality is much better than the Vette. I've had my XKR for 9 years and it is surprisingly reliable. The only issues occur when you have a weak battery (solved by installing a new battery) and the coolant hoses (and there are many) that fail after 20+ years. I bet the newer XK8/XKR with the Brembo brakes would stop faster than the Vette. Those Brembos are awesome in my S-Type R!

After spending more time than I care to admit with an xk8 convertible,I can honestly say that I am shocked that the Jag lasted through all thoses races,I always liked the looks, but the reliability is not even close to a Corvette. And if you own one that has been reliable and leak free, you truly have a piece of British automotive history.
leak free? this myth was always so silly to me, their hoses and seals are made out of the same materials any american or japanese car is made from, cars leak when they aren’t used regularly, what other issues did you have? they are generally good cars apart from timing chain tensioners and A drum. mine had a coolant leak in 2 hose areas on 25yo hoses after daily driving problem free for more than a year, and a valve cover gasket leak, that is not a “jaguar thing”, it is an old car thing.
@@h7pubg As someone who works on these for a living,I can tell you that it is not an industry issue or myth at all,it is a poor quality issue, uneven mating surfaces, poor quality materials for seals and gaskets etc. I have replaced multiple Jaguar engines over the years, every single one of them was oil soaked with one type of oil or another. And the issue isn't a hose or a seal leaking as much as it is what the hose attaches to,for instance I recently replaced the engine on a 2016 land rover,3.0 supercharged, there is a coolant bypass tube under the intake manifold,it is a poorly designed application that gets brittle and cracks, leading to leaking, leading to overheating, leading to a 14k dollar repair order for a new long block and install. I now have a 94 v12 Mercedes convertible and it isn't much better as far as the leaking and seeping fluids, and the car is used fairly regularly, but I also have a v8 Mercedes convertible and it is completely dry underneath. Bottom line is quality of materials, quality of engineering, and quality of installation on the production line.
@@glen7201 quality and design dropped post 2010, I don’t really think about those overcomplicated direct injection cars when I talk about jaguar, but pre 2010, especially 2003-2009 are as reliable as anything else, I never hear people in the jag groups with that era of cars dealing with abnormal leaks, the XKs had dash leather warping, plastic water pump impellers (that was stupid) but otherwise solid cars, the XJ8s had air suspension and sunroof issues but air suspension and sunroof issues plague all cars with air suspension and sunroofs. the major, actually jaguar quality downside to 4.0 96-02 cars was the timing chain tensioners, and plastic thermostat housing, I can’t imagine any domestic or asian car that doesn’t use plastic norma connectors in the cooling system, they all do, there is some truth but a lot of it is myths based on british leyland cars of the past, and their quality downfall after Tata ownership, but with some basic preventative maintenance, ford era jaguars are good cars. I know from experience, and experience of most other owners.
@@h7pubg Im not sure where you are from or what models you have available to you,but where I am from we were blessed with the X type, the S type,XK and XKR, Just as some examples, all of these models were very poor quality in construction and design, not so much to do with the use of plastic or any other materials, yet in the execution of its use. At least where I work the "myth" of the quality and reliability has actually become legend. I have been in the automotive field for 40 years now, every day of it has been working on foreign cars, its what I do for a living, and I would rate Jaguars among the worst overall, sure they may have had a few good years/models,but if they did I have not seen them, but then again I work on these things,so if there are good ones out there makes sense I wouldn't see them. I would be curious to see what the good years and models are though,I'm simply stating my experiences as one who has made a pretty good living wrenching on all makes and models with my specific arena being foreign cars. And all makes have their share of problems, even the best ranked models, but Jaguar seems to be very good at making some pretty attractive cars, just not reliable. The one that took residence in my garage was a 98 burgandy xk convertible,I really liked the styling, but it was a horribly built car,and truth be told my sl600 is probably as bad in its reliability, and I have stated many times if I couldn't wrench on it myself I wouldnt own it,but i keep it going simply because when its working proper there is nothing I like better. And as far as convertible cars go,I have driven/worked on Porsche,Bentley,Ferrari,Toyota,BMW,Jaguar to name a few.
Would be interesting to see the following generation of XKR with the 5l engine vs a C6 Stingray. Bet the used prices aren't far off each other now that depreciation has done its work
Why do they keep on saying the Corvettes at a disadvantage because of shifts slowed. That just means the Corvette's holding lower gears longer and getting up to redline. That's a advantage. The Jag was holding firstgear longer that's why was faster off line. Then the Jag quickly up shifted through the gears which slowed it down. I bet the Jag would keep up if you manually shift it.
Well there must be something wrong with the jaguar, I did a 1/4 mile race against a bolt in my 99 alero and yes off the line the bolt got me but as soon as I hit 65km I pulled away and got the bolt by a car length
Tommy, I'm about the same age as you and I do love that Jag, it would be a horrible financial decision and that prevents me from getting one, but I do like and if you told me I could have either one, I'd choose the Jag, seems more special to me.
I have one at 20, daily driven for 2 years, cost $6200 and put $5000 into it to this point, however it is a pretty sorted car, chain tensioners, full coolant pipe refresh, sensors, valve cover gaskets, alternator battery etc. it only ever broke down once due to original alternator, everything else was just to keep it freshened up + shop markup. if i did all the work myself it would have been 1/3 or 1/4 of that
Great video! I honestly love the C5. Its probably my favorite generation. (Minus the C1) The Jags are gorgeous and the interiors are on another planet vs GM, but the vette is a very good sports car.
Dude, same. I go for C2 first, but after that it is C5 then C6 (in that order). There is something about these C5s. They are sleek and elegant looking. Not a lot of hard lines, no real off-looking design elements. They're also extremely aerodynamic. Of course, my favorite car of all time is the Ws6.
I had a 2004 Lincoln LS whoch had basically the same engine, a 3.9L V8 and I raced it against my roommates 2002 Mustang GT. We were neck and neck until he hit 4th gear and he just pulled away
I never understood the “old guy” jokes when talking about Corvette. I have liked them since I was a kid and bought my first one at age 32. I have had 3 since that one. @@wydopnthrtl I was 32... 2 of my friends were about my age when they bought theirs. I think the real difference was that we all had the disposable income to justify a 2-seat car in addition to our more practical family cars. I've been Jaguar and Corvette lover before I could legally drive. The first car I drove over 100mph was a XJ6 and I was hooked on Jags. Whist I loved this vid... and its VERY COOL that a Dad and son are having fun racing cars... its not a fair comparison. IMO at the time the buyers of each would not have been comparison shopping the two. Nor are the cars engineered to be competitors. Old man w/golf clubs is about the only thing they actually compete in. 1. I currently own both a C5 Z06 and a 4.2L Jaguar S-Type. Both are in pristine condition, have low miles, and both have 300+hp V8's 2. The Vette is more comfortable to drive than you might think. And of coarse its FAST w/430-ish HP and 3100lbs. 3. The Jag is deceptively excellent at high speeds. It has 303HP and the ZF 6 speed has a 1st gear that'll get its 3600lbs off the line quicker than you might think. Once rolling 70+mph.. its sneaky fast. I've driven both on 2000+ mile road trips and to be honest there is no clear winner for such a trip. When I want to blast around locally.. I take the vette. When I want to go on longer freeway trips I take the Jag. Curvy mountain roads... eh... its a toss up. IF I were to drive at 100+mph for sustained periods of time.. the Jag would be the obvious choice as its high speed manners are just right. Regards, Richard in Ohio

@@marial8235 absolutely and why he would enjoy the Jag on longer trips. Jaguars always have had plush interior. Curvy roads the Vette will eases through, fatigue in the Jag after the first hour even though it feels well planted it’s weight shifting around is a chore.

Those Minna gallery grilles look pretty ropey up close. They look a lot better if you install them behind the bumper cover recessed back, but you have to fabricate your own bracket for that.
I sold Jaguar/AstonMartin/Land Rover when Ford owned them. The reason all those English Brands' reliability improved so drastically was because the first thing Ford did was dump EVERYTHING that said "LUCAS" on it. Then, Ford replaced those items with their Bosch equivalents. Still had issues with air suspensions throughout brands.
when the first C5 come out I went straight to the dealer and bought it new. A year later I discover that the 1996 Ford Probe arguably had a similar front bumper design. I was so furious I drove the C5 350 miles straight to a Dodge dealer in Texas and traded it in for a Dodge Viper. I didn't care how much money was lost in the trade...how a Corvette design team didn't pick up on this...
I would like to have seen a race between the Bolt and the Corvette. That might have been a close race. Then, race them again at sea level. NA engines LOVE operating at sea level! While barometric pressure makes a HUGE difference to normally aspirated engines, it makes NO difference to electric. The other thing is, that sea level creates more aerodynamic drag than high elevation, which tips the scales more against the electric. At sea level, the Jaguar might even give the Bolt a contest.
Corvettes got tuned exhaust with 5.7 litre LS1 engine.. Jags got 4 litre & seems somebody has put an X pipe & loads of sporty junk on it.. respect it for what it is!
I have been surprised Tommy is actually pretty damn good launcher in comparison to most of the crew especially in comparison to his dad ,it's really the only reason why the Jaguar stood any chance at all.

Not gonna lie... I wasn't expecting the Bolt to win that race. I thought it would have fallen on it's face before reaching the finish line. Always love seeing oddball older car comparisons. 2000 XJR was one of my favorites growing up, it had such a boss look and I was tired of seeing all the S Class and 7 Series cars on the west coast. Now even the little S-Type R is getting some notice. Thank you for these videos, keep them coming.
I still have a 2000 XJR. I bought it in November 99, and I still get compliments on it. I also have a 67 XKE and a 2007 XKR amongst others. Some Jaguars are just timeless.
YES!! Ive always loved those cars. I was racing down the highway in my 94' Rx7 one night and I saw one of these get on it entering the highway and get next to me, kept up. It was awesome.
@@brianunderwood2966 Very nice indeed. TFL could have used an XKR for a better comparison against the lighter Vette. Enjoy your cats!
I remember shoving down on the inner fender structure of an xk8 of the late 90's on display with it's hood up and distinctly heard a spot weld in the fender go "POP"!
That infamous jaguar unreliability is probably why theyre roughly half the price of C5 Vettes.
The C-5 in good condition is the best and I repeat is the best bang for your buck right now, so get one now because in 20 years they're going to be worth double at least
I wholeheartedly agree, I got mine, ‘99 frc in black m6.
@trlprk 99 here too....6spd. white, targa. 24,000 miles. love it..... don't understand why people call them old people cars I was 17 years old when my car came out oh, it was my dream car and now I have it. And it's sitting away in a garage my gets driven I don't know a hundred miles every few months
Besides who wants an old British sports car with a Ford experimental motor aging? You can purchase a C5 for half its original price and a Jag for 10% of its. Says it all!
Got a 98 C5! 100,000 miles $10,000! No scratches and no Rips or tares...runs perfect! WELL SAID!
I have an XJ8 with the 4.0L. The transmission is a ZF. German.
Benz 5 speed to be exact
@@WoodLox only the supercharged cars got the Mercedes-Benz 5 speed. The normally aspirated engines have the ZF 5 speed.
@@explorervango880 Thanks for the clarification. I knew of the engines were oval owned and engineered back then like Land Rover which today are India based Tata.

This Jag has so much presence and style when viewed "in the flesh"..they still has those classy interiors with wood trim and leather and the seats look lovely. Just the car that feels more special imo.
I have a 99’ xj8 4.0 straight piped. Had her for 9 years. Trust me, everyone think my seXJ8 is cool.

Engine doesn’t have enough power for its weight
They should used chevys transmissions with their own engines like they did before 97’. Other than that, the XJ & XK are timeless classics. Nice Father & son content 💪🏽
It would be fairer if they were both coupes as the convertible will always be heavier
To be fair to the jag the xk8 was the comfy one the performance one was the XKR
Would be interesting to see the following generation of XKR with the 5l engine vs a C6 Stingray. Bet the used prices aren't far off each other now that depreciation has done its work
Why do they keep on saying the Corvettes at a disadvantage because of shifts slowed. That just means the Corvette's holding lower gears longer and getting up to redline. That's a advantage. The Jag was holding firstgear longer that's why was faster off line. Then the Jag quickly up shifted through the gears which slowed it down. I bet the Jag would keep up if you manually shift it.
No
Prefer the sound of the Jag
Well there must be something wrong with the jaguar, I did a 1/4 mile race against a bolt in my 99 alero and yes off the line the bolt got me but as soon as I hit 65km I pulled away and got the bolt by a car length
My alero only has 195hp
It's almost like the corvette used to be a reasonably priced super car competitor
I remember I was driving to the airport back in the early 00s and I see William clay Ford in his Jag driving down 94 to either Dearborn or the Lions
If im not mistaken the Ls1 is a 346 not a 350
I might just start calling the 5.3L in my yukon a 327. 😃👍
That 4.0 with a super charger on it was a pretty fun vehicle.
"You definitely caught up." lol that's a bit of an understatement lol
Tommy, I'm about the same age as you and I do love that Jag, it would be a horrible financial decision and that prevents me from getting one, but I do like and if you told me I could have either one, I'd choose the Jag, seems more special to me.
Exactly its not cheaper except "as is" fixing is what kills resale!
(Minus the C1)
The Jags are gorgeous and the interiors are on another planet vs GM, but the vette is a very good sports car.

At least the “old man” car still has Wood😳

I never understood the “old guy” jokes when talking about Corvette. I have liked them since I was a kid and bought my first one at age 32. I have had 3 since that one. I think it has more to do with justifying a 2-seat car during child-raising years and less to do with being a car that old guys like.
Its true... read the book "All Corvettes are Red"
Two gold bags in the truck was the design standard for the C5
@@wydopnthrtl that's true of the "golf" part... But not the "old guy" part.

Jaguar XK8 isn't a sports car, it's a Grand Touring car.
Fun video guys! Removing the lipstick from the Jag was definitely an improvement. ;-)
Should race the C5 vs the XKR closer in power to weight.
Jaguar was never a "drag racer" and I wouldn't be pushing it too hard or something will break...On the other hand dad & son had fun making this video!
Both are in pristine condition, have low miles, and both have 300+hp V8's
I have a c6 and xk8 4.2. The c6 is way waaaay faster than the Jag. But the Jaguar interior is like driving in Buckingham palace and the Vette’s interior a slightly upgraded Cobalt.
@@marial8235 absolutely and why he would enjoy the Jag on longer trips. Jaguars always have had plush interior. Curvy roads the Vette will eases through, fatigue in the Jag after the first hour even though it feels well planted it’s weight shifting around is a chore.
@@WoodLox I guess one thing I didn't mention.. I put softer shocks, taller tires (more sidewall), and I rebuilt the drivers seat w/more foam. As is it handles plenty good for me and is quite comfy.
The Jag is all stock and the seat is a bit firm for my liking. But its MUCH quieter and is smoother over rough mid-west roads.
In July I'm taking the Vette on a 3k mile road trip down through the Appalachian mountains and down to Fla. I'm going to drive the entire Blue Ridge Parkway, Tail of the Dragon, and some other roads in east Tenn. Looking forward to taking the Vette!
@@wydopnthrtl Nice! Logically the Jag will always bests touring and the Corvette track day. The best ride is the one you use to cruise the United States in. Those Minna gallery grilles look pretty ropey up close. They look a lot better if you install them behind the bumper cover recessed back, but you have to fabricate your own bracket for that.
The way Tommy's dad just shakes his head is priceless...
A year later I discover that the 1996
Ford Probe arguably had a similar front bumper design.
I was so furious I drove the C5 350 miles straight to a Dodge dealer in Texas and traded it in for a Dodge Viper. I didn't care how much money was lost in the trade...how a Corvette design team didn't pick up on this...
Nice story
Yep, she's sitting in my garage, and haven't driven her for 8yrs... it's hard to believe how busy some people are.
I never saw an xk8 as a corvette. I saw it as the best anyone has ever done to make a better miata arguably the only successful better miata
Silly comparison with a 1700 cc difference in displacement. You should have used an XKR which is supercharged and would have smashed the Corvette.
Corvette was braking way early, you can see how the rear is lifting at 9:45 before the cones.
Corvettes got tuned exhaust with 5.7 litre LS1 engine.. Jags got 4 litre & seems somebody has put an X pipe & loads of sporty junk on it.. respect it for what it is!
XKR would have been the one to use, XK8 was a lux cruiser
I have been surprised Tommy is actually pretty damn good launcher in comparison to most of the crew especially in comparison to his dad ,it's really the only reason why the Jaguar stood any chance at all.
In Need for Speed hot pursuit 3, the xk8 was the slowest car in the game (c tier), while the corvette was a mid class (b teir) car
I’ve always liked the looks of the hardtop XK8, but they’re not that fast. Same with the XJR and S Type R, love the looks, interior, and luxury… but all Jags from the 90s and early 2000s were behind the Germans and Americans when it came to power and performance.
Thanks for doing this comparison. It was thoroughly enjoyable to watch. I'm in the market for an affordable sports car; trying to get one for around 12 g's. You can't get a Corvette for that nowadays but you can get an XKR 😁

I owned a 99 Jag XJR. It was one of the most beautiful, but unreliable cars I've ever owned. It never left me stranded but dash warning lights would randomly come on, the interior plastics like trim pieces & dash vents would self-destruct from being touched.
