The C8 is impressive as all-get-out ... but the C5 in my driveway is a joy I already have. I don't need the latest-and-greatest. My C5 is capable of far more than I ask of it. And after 45,000 miles in two years, with three cross-country trips including end-to-end on Historic Route 66 as well as end-to-end on the Lincoln Highway (New York to San Francisco), I can affirm that my C5 is comfortable for the long haul. I plan to wear it out -- unless I wear myself out, first.
RW, that’s awesome. Had to be an incredible trip. Bucket list, for sue. I’m tired from a 2hr turnaround, for a great car show, yesterday. My 01 drives like a dream, on her new BFG’s. Just about to hit 100k. Vette’s were out in force. Just in my row a 427 C2 and C3. Oh man they’re sick. There was, even, a super nice AF vet with a, sweet slvr/red, 11 day old C8. That interior is amazing. Keep ‘em spinning.🍻
31 class victories in ALMS (with 4 team championships, 4 constructors championships and 3 drivers championships) for the C5 with three class wins at LeMans and one overall at Daytona. They also sold a quarter of a million of them. Big shoes to fill.
I love my C5 Z06, it has very few nanny’s and you can turn them off. I looked at the C6Z, C7GS, and a C8, but the body lines of the C5Z matched my FD RX7 so well. The FD is still one of the best looking cars on the roads today!

I have owned a 1997 6 spd manuel, C5 since 2004. Just love it. Added a few things to it to keep it relevant. Long tubes, Xpipe, LS6 intake, Mild cam, Cold air intake, center force clutch, Brembo brake upgrade and a Dyno tune. While its far from beating a C8 its still very respectable. It's amazing how much performance is available to be made from a C5. While I put some money into it, it's still much cheaper than a C8 or C7. Plus the sound going through the gears seals the deal.
I will argue that the C3 was the sexiest Vette. The C4 was far too wedge-y, but the C5 echoed the C3's lines enough to make it the second-sexiest Corvette - and with a car-bra, it's the clear winner of the Bikini-Bridge look. I LOVE my C5 Pewter Bullet!
Got my 04 Z06 for 17k from a very overweight man who lets be real, could no longer use it comfortably. Its easily the lowest car I have ever gotten in and out of. It only had 58k miles on it and was in decent condition. Plenty of tiny little chips form normal use but nothing crazy. I still cannot believe how well I did and how much I love the car. 3 years in and its been a solid car. I dont drive it too much but the 10k miles I have done have been flawless. I put a new head unit and bolt-ons with a tune and its just 🤌🤌🤌.
I own a C6 Z06 that I really love. I have my eye on the C8 but don’t want to give up my Z. I don’t think I can justify and afford owning both. I’m sort of thinking about just keeping the Z. The 8 is faster, more refined and all around better but the Z is a bigger thrill to drive because it is more raw.
Keep the Z06, the two cars are so close in the quarter you'd hardly notice(with ideal shifting). But id never trade a manual for an auto even if the auto is faster. Its simply a more enjoyable experience.
As a long time Corvette fan who has owned several generations including the C5 and currently two of the C8’s, I can tell you there is much more to the comparison than performance. The C8 is a well designed and built sports car. Best Corvette ever by a mile. Truly world class and quite the bargain compared to competitors. Thanks for the video.
Lol i think you are the only one that took that comparison so seriously!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣 and corvettes are known for performance!!! Why would anyone do a different comparison?!?! They aren't known for comfort or a good ride, you just haul ass in um!!😂😂😂 the C5 is a pile of junk compared to the C8!!! There is absolutely no comparison between the two!!!
The C8 is huge. It’s just too big and heavy. Yes, I own one too (the HTC). Parked next to my Ferrari, it’s almost 20% bigger. They should have gotten rid of the rear trunk and saved some weight and made it a bit smaller and more nimble. Right now, it’s a GT not a sports car.
@@C4VETTELT1 I have a job. Why do I need a YT channel?? I don’t need the extra $5.25 you get. 😂. LOL. I just checked. You have a broke ass C4!! Can’t make this sh!t up and you are talking like you actually own something. I have a 2023 Stingray Convertible that I put less than 140 miles on in 6 months. That’s how many cars I own and how the Corvette is nothing to me.
@chijen2010 I doubt it!!! And not too far in the future I'll be blowing people like you doors completely off!!! I can't wait to see the look on people like you faces when I completely blow their doors OFF!!! you have heard of this little thing called the aftermarket?!?! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 and yes I checked yours and you have nothing so that what I expect you to have is nothing actually!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 you don't have a corvette or Ferrari!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 people can say whatever they want!!! Lol I have a McLaren F1!!!! see how easy that is!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I had a C5. Corvette Fever wanted to build a street legal race car using the C5R-427 block from Corvette Racing. Fortunately the tuner we used, Norris Motorsports, was a writer for the magazine and asked if we wanted our car to have that engine, no charge. My wife and I discussed it for 2 seconds! What a monster!
Another thing to add is this c5 was slower than the best one for the base model. The 01-04 are the ones you want. They had a better drivetrain and made 25+ more hp to the crank and about the same more in torque.
@@Corsavette02 nothing to fret about. It's not like the other variants of C5 were that much better than the earlier builds. All minor changes in stock form. To truly improve upon any variation of LS1 or LS6 you'll need to make upgrades. My '99 is forged and supercharged. I wouldn't trade it or sell it for anything and I've owned it since new. 25 years and 140k+ miles of smiles.
As a two time owner of a C5 and two time and current owner of a C8 I will say this, the C5, C7 and C8 are my absolute favorite Corvettes ever, but I'm a bit biased as I've also owned a 2014 (first 10 people to own one in my city of over a million). Good show, gents, good show.
@@ghostwrench2292funny we were talking about this, at a CS, yesterday. C6 GS looked pretty neat. Otherwise kind of a betweener. You can see a lot of the C7, in them, and they’re fast AF…but..yeah, I don’t know. Something missing. 🍻
Have a 2000 and a 2023. The 2000 was my dads and we drove it at our wedding in 2002. I found THE C5 from our wedding as I ordered the C8 and decided to have both. So we have our wedding car and a car in our 20th year of marriage. We LOVE them both. Very different experiences and both are endearing.
Few Grand was a figure of speech, but it won't take much to get that 5.7L up and moving a lil quicker. Aye just a lil quicker.....now if u wanna GAP the C8 then you'll have to dig in ya pockets much deeper😅
C5 Z06 here w/full exhaust and a lot of little mods to make it more up to date. I run mid 12's, get 30 mpg, and love to look at it and drive it in the nice weather. I'm not selling and perfectly happy as is. (I am eyeing a TT or blower though 😎 )
I wasn't too in love with the new C8 until yesterday when I saw a all black C8 with deep dish polished aluminum spoke wheels with white letter tires. My God that thing looked like a 90s supercar
Love the C5 looks, def. best looking one imo. If that's each their cars, they should put $10k in the C5 and do it again. 1/4 mile def. be with the C8, braking likely as well with wider tires than 245/275.
I was looking for a c5 when I came across a good deal on a c6. Every time I see a C5 I think man I should have bought one those. lol You could buy a c5 for 15k supercharger for 6k, heads and cam for 2800 upgrade clutch for 700-1k or for auto your looking at a trans rebuild 3-4k and a good tune for 700-800 and beat the c8 for way less money.
The automatic version is 2 seconds slower on the 1/4 mile and that car seemed to be in 1st gear for an eternity! I have a C5 Z06 with bolt ons and let me tell you its a much, much closer race on the highway. I still lost though :D. Cant beat that shift time.
Loved the video. We currently have a C5 and a C7 - while both cars are great the difference in performance between the two is night and day. Also had an LS3 C6 before the C7, it was a great running car with that motor. Love all of your vette content. C8s are great if only we had more $pace in our garage 😎
Ran an 11.8 on my very lightly modded C5 Z06 with sticky NT01's, not drag radials. Mods were a cold air intake, a light weight battery relocated to the rear, Bilstein sport shocks, upgraded brakes... that's it. Prefer the more neutral handling of 50/50 weight balance and under 3000 lbs with less gas in the tank.
@indsPat They are around 3100 lbs stock. They have a 19 gallon fuel tank... just running a 1/2 tank bring the car to 3040 lbs lol. I have a/c delete, racing seats, 2 piece rotors, ATI super damper without crank pulley (6 lbs lighter), light weight battery (20 lbs lighter than stock) relocated to rear. Doing headers saves another 20 lbs or so, more if you delete the air pump. You can get these cars pretty light actually without gutting interior if you know what you're doing.
@@joels6736 Nice! lol I didnt know the ATI super dampener was a 6lbs drivetrain weight reduction! I will say that weight listed by a manufacturer is a dry curb weight so the amount of fuel would only increase the number.
@indsPat Curb weight is all fluids in car. Its not dry weight. And the ATI super dampening that includes the AC pulley is not 6lbs lighter. Our cars have the A/c system separated from the serpentine belt as its own individual pulley and belt. ATI sells a specific damper pulley without the a/c pulley attached. My car with 1/2 a tank is currently just under 2940 lbs. I'm considering headers for further front end weight reduction. I'm just not sure i want the extra noise. Other considerations for weight reduction are carbon drive shaft, billet housing clutch / aluminum flywheel (this is a huge savings as much as 38 lbs on the extreme side), carbon fiber doors (over 50 lbs savings per door!).
@@joels6736 Damn your right im calling my dumb ass friend now to bitch at him because he mislead me so many years ago and I have been getting that wrong for so long!

I had a 2002 C5 6 spd. It's not quick by today's standards but it's still one of the best triple digit GT/Sport cars. I could sit 117mph at 3000rpms and still get about 13mpg. Take it down to 90mph and still getting in the mid/upper 25/29mpg. It was so slippery in the wind. It still had respectable handling and brakes could hold up to spirited driving.
I know it is not a prepped surface but that C5 should be doing high 13's at least. Back in 2002 when I first bought my WRX I raced many C5's. A Z06 was gone after 2nd gear and a regular C5 was pulling away after 3rd. I regularly ran low 14s at the dragstrip. I would like to see this race run again with a low boost turbo or supercharger kit installed on the C5.
You are right. The C5 they use in those Videos are a 4gear Automatic with the long Safe Fuel Diff. A Manual Car, or at least an Automatic with the Z51 Performance Diff should do 13sec times.
@@kallo182 True! I live about a thousand above sea level and my c5 I suspected had the z51 package because it was pretty strong for an 02. A fbo 10 speed tuned on e85 got smoked in a dig race and once we hit 100 he had top end and easily came past. Given I was only intake, header, and tune. On the highway I put a bus length on a 450+whp WRX. I was neck and neck with my buddy's 500whp 3v mustang until 3red gear when he pulled hard lmao. I miss that car!
c5 is an amazing car considering the ferraris of that time we’re making around 380 hp 350 from a vette for a fraction of the price was a huge performance bargain especially when the zo6 came out pushing 400 horsepower was ridiculous at the time
Ran a C8 base vs my 07 Z06 from a roll and got him a 2 for 20 from Gapplebees. Had him by 3 or 4 cars from 40-150. Ran another one from a dig and we both spun a bit at launch, close race with him a little more than a nose ahead. Ran again and he had me by about 2 cars to 115ish mph. From a dig, the c8 really gets after it.
Nice comparison. Both look and sound great. I'd shoot for a C6 and bridge the gap between those two. As the market is creeping back toward normal, that C8 is going to depreciate the entire value of most C5s on the road today just in its first year. C8 is a complete beast, but something just feels completely wrong w/ spending near 100K on a GM product.
I supercharged my 1998 6-speed C5 and it makes 490 horse to the wheels, so it is a lot faster than it was stock Not counting the GS wheels (that bring the car into this century), the Corbeau racing seats and the double DIN radio upgrade, I have only about $18k invested in just the performance side of the car (the $18k is including the car purchase), and let me tell you it rips. The C8 is no doubt very nice with its mid-engine technology, but I am good with how fast my C5 is for the amount of money I have invested in it. I am making double principal payments on my mortgage every month to pay my house off in half the time, so I can't afford a car payment right now.
According to road test magazines back in the day, my 2003 C5 did the quarter mile in 13.2 seconds. I also own a stock 1988 C4 and I personally ran a best time of 13.992 at Pomona Drag Strip. 15 seconds for your C5 seems relatively slow. Heck, my stock 96 Impala SS turned the quarter at Pomona in 15.3 seconds (14.7 with minor mods).
Personally I think that C5 sounds better at least on the video. The C8 is impressive, but good luck getting one for MSRP. I would probably get the C5 and do some mods and still be able to work on it. Plus it's available with a manual transmission.
It’s true. Actually almost a bit obnoxious how much attention the c8 gets. You can’t buy one of these and not be social because people want to talk to you or take pictures or something. You feel like you’re driving a Lamborghini based on how people react to it.
I test drove a 2000 C5 automatic around the same time that my boss took me for a ride in his 2005 C6 zo6, the difference between those two cars were ASTRONOMICAL. The 2000 was reasonably quick, but the 2005 nearly made me dizzy it was so fast.
@@JamesAMG It probably was. Wasn't my car. He either said it was an on '05 or he bought it in '05. It was more than ten years ago that I left that job.
Love this comparison - thanks! C6Z/ZR1 is the ultimate expression of the C4/C5 design language and is timeless. The C8 is cool, but completely different C9 will be interesting!
Just got myself a C5 Corvette from 2002, European version obviously. And from what I saw it is the best sportscar: it is fast, sturdy, low priced compared to same generation sportscars, and, surprisingly enough, practical with a targa and a big trunk. The mpgs are good, and the V8 sounds good too. And I forgot the obvious: it is an absolutely gorgeous looking car
Even when she was stuck on jack stands for a month, my C5Z still gets a double take from me when I walk away. Its a timeless, smooth sexy shape! Got my 04 Z06 for 17k from a very overweight man who lets be real, could no longer use it comfortably. Its easily the lowest car I have ever gotten in and out of. I still like the C5 more. The styling is great. The new new just coms off as the "we have a Ferrari at home" meme. It's like a dollar brand bag of Cheetos.
@@RBZ06LT6 Why? It's literally a Ferrari 488 copy. GM engineers said that in the same sentence as "marvel of technology and engineering". Yeah, decade-old Italian engineering, not three-year-old "we've run out of ideas" engineering. How, exactly, is the C8 so much more "advanced" than the C7? Mid-engined, that's it.
@@MrDeathRay uh they do actually. TFL has so many followers, they could have a call out to subscribers with these vehicles in the area. Owners of these vehicles would love to loan their vehicles for TFL air time. Give me a break.
As much as that would be cool that wouldn’t even be a competition. C1 is purely for show/looks at this point. It would be beat the C8 in that. But a drag race would be a slaughter
That would be simply spectacular! Let the older generations use whatever, limited run, fastest model you could get and then do base models for C5+. Just make sure the c5 is a 6 speed!!!
I have a C6 and the horsepower gap is about 100 between the C6 and the C8 so that would be another fun comparison but as you mentioned I could purchase probably a high mileage C7 and a C6 for the price of the C8. Either way I like all corvettes for their looks and drivability
Yup, to my mind the C5 sounded better, the low rumble was more prominent :) C8 sounds ofc gooood but as it is, but as a comparison in this set up it was the C5 for me 🦖
I love them both, had two C5’s one with cam and heads and full bolt ons that would run 11.30’s so the C5 is definitely the best bang for buck with a extra 3-5k worth of mods. But the C8 is the whole package if you want to spend the 80-100k
The roll race wasn’t so bad for the C5. I hope to hell the C5 downshifted to 1st because 30mph is close to the cutoff from getting 1st. I think it did get 1st and it looked like around 70mph or so it wasn’t being pulled that bad.
I’ve seen stock LS1 C5s make 500 crank HP with just Cam, Longtubes/Full Exhaust, and a good dyno Tune. The LS platform is still a potent power plant. A mild LS build with twins will easily make 1000-1200hp.
c5 3 year owner, and by the way we do have competitive mode 😂just hold down the Active Handling once then turn it on again but hold for like 5-7 seconds
The C5 Corvette is a way better choice than the newer C8. Even if the new one is a better performance, nothing will ever compete against how versatile the older Vettes are, plus the older Vettes look way better.
Four things IMO: 1) The 2001-2004 had the felt liner on the hood and battery cover, 1999 didn’t (weight reduction by 27lbs if removed) 2) the a4 has a drastically low mid range acceleration due to its long 3rd gear (Auto4 0-100 14.8s/ Manual6 0-100 10.2s/ z06 0-100 M6 8.9s 3) the Hardtop is the heaviest model by 173lbs 4) the zO6 has a better power to weight ratio than the C8 and would’ve been a much better contender.
As a 1998 C5 owner I had to watch out of curiosity. But racing a state of the art 500HP C8 against a 350HP C5 isn’t really a fair fight. Kinda like comparing an F-22 to an F-16. Still fun to watch though.
As an 04 C5 owner I figured there would be a nice gap. Still love my C5 for my summertime kind of daily driver here in Michigan though. When the time and money is right, I'll either go to a C7 or C8.
Funny thing is that C5 corvette was 1998 motor trends car of the year, and C8 corvette is 2020 motor trends car of the year, putting them both in the drag race.
C5's can be bought for as little as $12 grand now. C8's are $100 grand or more, and the Z06 is $200K+.....5X? yeah right. More like 10 or 20 fold. People don't pay MSRP. They're marking them up big time.
Bought my c5 for $15k and dumped little under $20k with: a&a blower, complete suspension replacement and upgrade, and I walk stock c8 base and z06’s. Amazing what 365/17’ in street legal drag radial will do for you. My c5 faster than my c7 z06.
C5 Z06 here! Love the c8 corvettes. The price is a bit high for now. The performace of the c5 is pretty good campared to the c8 even though its quite fast. Ill still take the C5 over the c8 for sleakness and easy of use for me alone.
The c8 has no self driving garbage. No auto start stop, no lane keep assist, no adaptive cruise or any of that garbage. It’s probably one of the few cars you can buy that doesn’t try to tell you how to drive, it’s wonderful.
@@smykster007 I was planning same thing, than found a used Yank SS4000 to try out and now Im more than happy keeping this ride an a4. Completely changes the car, it's always in the power band. Still not a manual experience, but so much better to drive. Wish I would have done it years ago!

Would love to see a C5 showdown episode..I was running in the big Camaro club here when the C5 was about 5yrs old and we had a LOT of C5 owners in the club. We had some guys with the base C5 and a few with the Z06....but...we had 2 guys with the Lingenfelter Z06. One of them had the single turbo Lingenfelter package that was I believe 525hp and the other guy with the twin turbo package that was 700+ HP. At the track he ran that twin turbo at 9.69@160mph straight from the shop. He ran against an R1 that ran almost identical times. I would love to see the step up comparisons of the C5, z06 C5, and the single turbo C5. From what I heard, the tein turbo package was extremely rare and was almost as much as the car...So, I doubt you would find one at this point.
In 2008 Lingenfelter still advertised being able to turn your C5 into that TT monster you refer to. It was a lot more than a couple snails. The engine was a Lingenfelter LS derivative displacing 7 liters. The price at the time was about $22,000. You supplied the C5.
The C5's exhaust in this video is not stock OEM. It was super quiet back in the day with these teenie little exhausts that were lame, even the C5 Z06's famous titanium exhaust was disturbingly quiet. The first thing I did to mine was replace it with Borlas.
I just sold my C5 and bought a 2008 C6. I’d like to see the C8 against the C6 Ls3. Bet that would be closer. I loved my C5 but this C6 is way better in power than the C5.
My old BB Corvette Matching numbers will do easy 12's at 110 here at elevation. And that is with an easy roll out start. I bet it would do 11 if I would dump the clutch! Ouch!! Not the best idea as it is not a drag car. I am nice to my old BB.
The C5 targa is actually aluminum. Also, it's like 25 lbs. a targa vs a push button convertible is not necceisarily a fair comparison. Neither is a traditional automatic with a DCT. The auto was the slowest version of the C5. 15.5 1/4 mile is a little slower, but at 5000 ft, sounds about right. Vmax was also only like 145mph. The z-51 cars had better ratios in the T56, and a 3.42 rear end gear vs crappy 4L60e truck gearing and a 2.73 to try and get the fuel economy of the M6.
I like all generations of corvette but the c8 is the best yet. Performance wise is the advancement of engine, transmission and steering/suspension . Looks wise all have their strengths, also modern cars are much more advanced in electronics/interior systems and design.
The C5 is the best looking Corvette. Sure to see a outperforms it as itt better. For cost five times. What you would pay for a C5. The C5 is a Corvette favorite and will always be .
I don’t care what anyone says, both are still amazing cars. I love the C5 for being that image of what you see when you think “corvette” and the C8 for being the innovation that GM needed for the corvette.
I still believe the C5 stealthy look coming down the road is timeless to this day. 💯

C8 looks strange. Also I would buy a Porsche, Lotus or something for similar high money. C6 Z06 is perfect car to settle on.
I would bet you’ll be kicking yourself in the ass for giving up the Z in no time.
Keep the C6 Z06!!!
Keep the Z06, the two cars are so close in the quarter you'd hardly notice(with ideal shifting). But id never trade a manual for an auto even if the auto is faster. Its simply a more enjoyable experience.
Dude, the C6 Z is so much cooler.
You probably had all autotragic vettes 😂
25 more tq. Hp was only 5 more than the earlier years.
They also had better conecting rod bolts, sadly my c5 was built in late 1999 and didnt get those goodies....oh well......future projects
@@gotmylk it would be interesting If you made a video showing us what you did to your car and do some performance runs.
PS...that 11.6 1/4 mile NA was with the 4.10 diff.
C3 is better
I owned a C5 as well, and I'm with you C5, C7, & C8 all day!!!
Why does C6 not make the list? My personal favorite.
@@ghostwrench2292funny we were talking about this, at a CS, yesterday. C6 GS looked pretty neat. Otherwise kind of a betweener. You can see a lot of the C7, in them, and they’re fast AF…but..yeah, I don’t know. Something missing. 🍻
@ghostwrench2292 most people I run into that know their vettes think the c6 is the best and that the 8 is just a Ferrari with a vette badge.
I'll take the C5 all day and put a few grand into it.....🤸♂️
I agree c5 is better looking car and with heavy mods could be a competitor to c8 in less money
No you wouldn’t
They are not even close…and a few grand won’t do much…unless you start sticking massive turbos into it…with lag issues..etc.
Shiiiit just a 6 speed with a supercharger kit would walk all over a stock c8 and that would cost half of your 10k.
I've had a c8 for 2 years this july, it is absolutely worth the money and the car looks significantly better with aftermarket wheels and tires
I bought a mint 2005 last Saturday. Currently loving it
The C5 is still a nice car but the C8 is in a completely different class in both looks and performance.
I'll be keeping my 1976 C3. Most beautiful Corvette ever made.
The old one actually sounds better 🤯 another great vid!!
Yeah, that's the LS1 engine for you. The 98-2002 Camaro Z28/SS had it as well and I owned one. Amazing sound and performance.
I was able to get a good nap in between the two cars crossing the finish line 😂
That wasn't even close.
Also c5Z owner here. They dont weight under 3000lbs unless you have done some legit weight reduction.
I love my $17,000 mint condition electron blue C5 Z06. It has a $5,000 supercharger, producing 575 wheel horsepower and $1,100 coilovers giving it 2003 Ferrari like performance. My insurance is $500 a year. My Dad has a C8 and liked my 5 so much that he just got a yellow one.
What 2003 Ferrari, an Enzo? 😊

I'm 36 and worked my bag off for this car. But my first car was a 89 z24 cavalier hahah 😆
It is fast by today’s standards…just not for performance cars
I know it is not a prepped surface but that C5 should be doing high 13's at least. Back in 2002 when I first bought my WRX I raced many C5's. A Z06 was gone after 2nd gear and a regular C5 was pulling away after 3rd. I regularly ran low 14s at the dragstrip. I would like to see this race run again with a low boost turbo or supercharger kit installed on the C5.
it’s 5000 feet above sea level so it’s only making 270 at most at the crank
Even a c5z06 would be better comparison
A supercharged 6speed c5 would run circles around a c8 on highway pulls. Dig races would be a different story because that c8 is crazy off the line.
c5 is an amazing car considering the ferraris of that time we’re making around 380 hp 350 from a vette for a fraction of the price was a huge performance bargain especially when the zo6 came out pushing 400 horsepower was ridiculous at the time
Not to mention how well sorted the platform is for actual road racing. It completely dominated at the time.
Yea I wouldn't even bother racing one from a dig lol. MR with legit tech and lots of gears is gonna be nutty.
Great opening! I think I will keep my 7-SPEED. The LAST of the CORVETTE Manual Transmissions!
I keep waiting for someone to show us any of these races between a C7 ZO6 against the C8. COME ON U-DRAGS!
But remember the C8 is not just any GM product. It's the very 1st mid-engined Corvette and can outperform cars 2-3 times its price.
Also youre forced to get an auto with a C8
Getting an auto is nowhere near the comprise that it used to be.
@@sergeysmelnik not a bad thing at all lol
I supercharged my 1998 6-speed C5 and it makes 490 horse to the wheels, so it is a lot faster than it was stock
Not counting the GS wheels (that bring the car into this century), the Corbeau racing seats and the double DIN radio upgrade, I have only about $18k invested in just the performance side of the car (the $18k is including the car purchase), and let me tell you it rips.
Did you not hear him say he's a mile above sea level ? That's almost a 2 second addition .
That a4 is reallllly neutering that car.
The C5 to this day is the borderline for what is fast, at least to me. And it sounds better to boot.
The C5 sounded better :)
Personally I think that C5 sounds better at least on the video. The C8 is impressive, but good luck getting one for MSRP. I would probably get the C5 and do some mods and still be able to work on it. Plus it's available with a manual transmission.
The c5 with a 6k A&A supercharger and nothing else is pushing more than 500hp to the wheel. And the kit is 50 states legal 😂
When you see a C8 on the road…you notice it immediately! So awesome!
Exactly......this notion that a C5 has more current appeal is ridiculous
It’s true. Actually almost a bit obnoxious how much attention the c8 gets. You can’t buy one of these and not be social because people want to talk to you or take pictures or something. You feel like you’re driving a Lamborghini based on how people react to it.
@Rare Dance Classics indeed...I have a white one with black wheels and no emblems on it....people look all the time :)
I test drove a 2000 C5 automatic around the same time that my boss took me for a ride in his 2005 C6 zo6, the difference between those two cars were ASTRONOMICAL. The 2000 was reasonably quick, but the 2005 nearly made me dizzy it was so fast.
There is no 2005 Z06. Maybe you mean ‘06 which is the first year of the C6 Z06.
Absolutely worth the money.

I'd buy a low mileage C5, add a Magnuson SC and exhaust plus some coil-overs. I'd have a ton of fun for a fraction of the C8 price.
I still like the C5 more. The styling is great. The new new just coms off as the "we have a Ferrari at home" meme. It's like a dollar brand bag of Cheetos.
Lol! The C8 is flawless.
Yeah the 5th 6th Gen are the greatest
When i hear or read people talk like that about the C8, i can hear ignorance 😂
@@RBZ06LT6 You must hear yourself often then. You’re in the minority with your clueless opinion, by the way.
I think a better comparison would have been a C6 z06 or C6 ZR1.
Sure they would have been closer, but these are both two base model Corvettes. A neat comparison nonetheless.
You think corvettes appear out of thin air? They working with what they got

Mine ran a 13.2 stock automatic 4spd
Yeah it seems like it has low compression or something. Also being at high altitude doesn't help
Need to do a C1-C8 simultaneous drag race. That would be sweet!
As much as that would be cool that wouldn’t even be a competition. C1 is purely for show/looks at this point. It would be beat the C8 in that. But a drag race would be a slaughter
@@YesSirYesSir3bagsFULL Not really a competition, just a cool shot seeing all 8 generations running side-by-side.
Yup, to my mind the C5 sounded better, the low rumble was more prominent :) C8 sounds ofc gooood but as it is, but as a comparison in this set up it was the C5 for me 🦖
Billy Boat exhaust I think.
Old corvette interior is a minor downside but how it looks and moves is still clean as hell and a timeless beautiful car
The best I ever ran in my nearly stock 99 C5 was 12.82 at sea level.
The old one sounds better to me.
@@shawnhorton2000 Just my opinion, it sounded more like an older small block with headers to me.
C5 for me. Nothing like the tried-and-truness of the LS + 4L60E.
Never heard of anyone liking the 4L60
I love them both, had two C5’s one with cam and heads and full bolt ons that would run 11.30’s so the C5 is definitely the best bang for buck with a extra 3-5k worth of mods. But the C8 is the whole package if you want to spend the 80-100k
Now I want to see c6 and c7 vs the c8.
The roll race wasn’t so bad for the C5. I hope to hell the C5 downshifted to 1st because 30mph is close to the cutoff from getting 1st. I think it did get 1st and it looked like around 70mph or so it wasn’t being pulled that bad.
Your must also have a 4l60e with tall gears😂😂😂
I’ve seen stock LS1 C5s make 500 crank HP with just Cam, Longtubes/Full Exhaust, and a good dyno Tune. The LS platform is still a potent power plant. A mild LS build with twins will easily make 1000-1200hp.
Yikes that's either an extremely aggressive cam or a dynojet. Most C6/LS3s only hit 500 with the same mods you mentioned.
With a Vortech supercharger (no other mods), my C5 makes 490 to the wheels.
The C7 grand sport would have been a good enough comparison.
I’ve had a C5 but ABSOLUTELY love my C8.
And I had a C6 and LOVE my C8. Totally worth the extra $ I had to put out.
c5 3 year owner, and by the way we do have competitive mode 😂just hold down the Active Handling once then turn it on again but hold for like 5-7 seconds
The C5 Corvette is a way better choice than the newer C8. Even if the new one is a better performance, nothing will ever compete against how versatile the older Vettes are, plus the older Vettes look way better.
This is an excellent comparison of the Corrette design engineering advancements. I hope to drive, and maybe own every generation model some day!
Four things IMO:
1) The 2001-2004 had the felt liner on the hood and battery cover, 1999 didn’t (weight reduction by 27lbs if removed)
2) the a4 has a drastically low mid range acceleration due to its long 3rd gear (Auto4 0-100 14.8s/ Manual6 0-100 10.2s/ z06 0-100 M6 8.9s
3) the Hardtop is the heaviest model by 173lbs
4) the zO6 has a better power to weight ratio than the C8 and would’ve been a much better contender.
As a 1998 C5 owner I had to watch out of curiosity. But racing a state of the art 500HP C8 against a 350HP C5 isn’t really a fair fight. Kinda like comparing an F-22 to an F-16. Still fun to watch though.
The best part of my C3 and C5....they are both paid for, no car payments.
Still rather the c5 or c7. Just think the c8 is ugly. Just a personal opinion
I would like to see the C6 Z06 get a chance to race the base C8
That was fun. Love Corvettes. Cheers!!!
Still just baffles me how so many people just hate on the C8 just out of elitism more than anything

C6 ZR1 has the best corvette sound ever
As an 04 C5 owner I figured there would be a nice gap. Still love my C5 for my summertime kind of daily driver here in Michigan though. When the time and money is right, I'll either go to a C7 or C8.
not if you heads cam it it will walk that c8 i have one
I want a c8 so bad, by far the best looking corvette ever

C5 Z06 here! Love the c8 corvettes. The price is a bit high for now. The performace of the c5 is pretty good campared to the c8 even though its quite fast. Ill still take the C5 over the c8 for sleakness and easy of use for me alone.
Both cars are high performing for their time. For a much more capable car in the C8, the cars are both great to drive I am sure.
I mostly love the front engine corvettes more then the mid engine ones
C8 owner here... The car is awesome, but I long for a basic stick car that doesn't have so many electronics... I'm leaning towards an m2.

I'm finding myself wanting to drive older, simpler, slower cars fast rather than get behind the wheel of the newer car and let it drive for me
The c8 has no self driving garbage. No auto start stop, no lane keep assist, no adaptive cruise or any of that garbage. It’s probably one of the few cars you can buy that doesn’t try to tell you how to drive, it’s wonderful.

The good news is that you can get as many speeding tickets in the c5 as the c8!!
Bad news is the INsurance on the c8 is much more!!
At 5,000 ft elevation, your looking at 14's.
@@danielfair4675 I do easy 12's at 110. All day. All motor. 6000 feet.
Z06 should of been used.... c5 z06. If we're going by price, they're still cheap
Congratulations on surpassing a million subscribers! Watching from Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹
C5: One of the most beautiful cars ever made, IMHO
12.69 @115 mph 1/4 mile. 7500LBS 2007 GMC SIERRA 2500HD.
4.4 sec 0-60
& 1/8th mile 8.18 Tows 17k.
Built trans/68mm turbo, modified CP3. Stock injectors
I don’t care what anyone says, both are still amazing cars. I love the C5 for being that image of what you see when you think “corvette” and the C8 for being the innovation that GM needed for the corvette.
