C4 is finally getting the recognition it deserves after being treated like the red-headed stepchild of the Corvette family for so long. 240hp - 330hp is *more* than enough power for the streets. These old pushrod V8's make all the low end torque people love and there is no shortage of it here. What people often forget about is how well these cars handle in the corners. They are one of the best looking cars ever made and the interiors look way more interesting than later year 90's GM. The mixture of digital and analog looks really cool, especially with the amber lighting in the revised/updated C4's. While they are not 400hp machines, they are still some of the best handling cars you can still get for their price range and they feel wonderful to cruise. For those who aren't familiar with the C4, it received a facelift in1991 but it was also last the last year for the L98 V8. The facelift basically took the ZR1 body and made it standard from '91-'96. Engines: Starting with 1987 - Updated L98 with 240hp and ~340 torques (Personally wouldn't get anything before '87 due to having much less HP) ZR1 Only - LT5 "King of the Hill" 375 hp and 370 lb-ft of torque 1992 - 1996 introduced the LT1 with 300HP and ~330 torques 1996 was the only year for the LT4 (rated at 330 HP and ~340 torque). It came standard with any C4 built with a manual transmission/Grand Sport. Auto's only came with the LT1 but in 1996, the autos came standard equipped with a 3.07 gear ratio (Performance Axel - Code G44/G92.) Perfect for cruising. BTW, you can find what options your car came equipped with by opening the storage lid behind the passenger side. There is a stick affixed underneath the lid. Good way to verify what your C4 came with! '95 - '96 are the best years for the Optispark as the distributor was "vented" to help with moisture buildup. Not saying you couldn't enjoy a '92-'94 but it is something to keep in mind. I absolutely love the C4 Corvette. I DD a '96 with an LT1 and it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it.

People sleep on the power of a Hybrid....My 2012 Camry XLE hybrid 200hp and 0 to 60 in 6.6 seconds which gives a lot of cars trouble and have beaten much more powerful cars like Camaros in short drag races and many other cars thinking they are just gonna pass me in a breeze and quickly realize? They aren't gonna smoke me by any means and it's not gonna go down like they think? Just because they have 300 plus HP....when maybe they are a second faster in the long run they'll win the mile but not the 100 yard dash... ..The torque on these cars will give them a run for their money as the electric motor is essentially a turbo for these cars .They are no monsters by any means but nice zippy cars that you don't have to spend ridiculous money on turbos and exhaust upgrades for power and still get over 40mpg compared to well under 20 Mpg for something Faster...For What?Thousands of dollars of upgrades to gain one and a half seconds at Best for a third of the gas mileage?Which makes these a clear winner especially with ever rising gas prices.....
RU sure those are muscle cars?????? The Trans am and the corvette are American SPORTS cars. Not muscle cars, and you may ask why and it’s because they have a sleek design with a more aerodynamic look than a brick front of a muscle car like the dodge challenger, charger, and more.
Not for those years. The trans am with the auto 275 hp (25 less then the one used) did 0-60 in 5.7 seconds and the converter auto did it in just over 6
You all are having too much fun🤠A coworker had both Corvettes with both engines back in the day, a 1995 LT1 and a 1988 TPI. The TPI felt quicker in low speed traffic, the LT1 would smoke it above 4000 rpm. And--It doesn’t matter how fast the Prius is, they will still be found clogging the left lanes from coast to coast at 2 mph under the posted limit😎
I have a 2008 Mazda 3 2.3L 5 speed. Not the fastest car, but fun in corners. I took an exit ramp in a sporting manner. Checked my mirror and there's a car behind me keeping up. (They weren't actually that close. I appreciated their driving spirit- it was good fun). Those things are quick and look good! And get great milage.
Yeah, at least in my Gen2 Prius, you need to know where your battery is. If it's near full, it will help you a lot. If it's closer to empty, which can happen at any given time, it won't help much at all. It does this on it's own without any input from the driver.
Im enjoying this new style of races. Fun light hearted. Still Informational and fun to watch. I'd like to see some other things vs that prius and vett. Some regular cars and trucks. No trx or raptors. Instead titan, ram, silverado, f150. Or v6 4 door sedans, like impala, charger. Or modern jeep cherokee, equinox ect ect....Curious only lol
I happen to have an '88 C4 Corvette automatic. At Pomona Drag Strip it ran a best time of 13.992 @ 102 MPH. It was bone stock except the air filter was removed. Now it sits rotting in my garage because it won't pass California's smog test. With 216,000 miles, I think the engine needs some work. Otherwise, it's been a great car.
I think the result would be very difficult racing at sea level. The high altitude won't affect the electric motor output on the prius. Where as the 2 na cars are losing power with just their gas engines.
How proud he is of his Prius when he said he was doing 53 mpg. A few years ago i bought a 2005 Jaguar x-type 2 liter for only 500£ and with 130k miles it was doing 53 mpg too.
Well, the thing is, any brand new car will be much more "nimble" due to the fact that every part of the suspension is new and tight as well as the fact that modern compounds are used in things like bushings that are not in the older car's components. That said, this old car was very impressive.
If I remember correctly, that Tuned Port Injection (TPI) intake on that C4 setup ran out “juice” around 5,000 to 5,500 RPM. Yeah, 50 mpg, but remember the test that Top Gear ran years ago. They put the prius on track and ran it as fast as they could around the track, with a BMW 3 series (M3?) keeping pace behind. The Prius was trying hard; the BMW driver was yawning. But the point is that the BMW's gas mileage for the track test was better than the Prius.
Great contest. Toyota has a GR Prius planned. And the AWD and prime models are slightly faster but need wider tires to really compete or a manual or dsg.
I'd like to see it in a fair race, not the "were in a place that kills the performance of a gas engine but MY electric car isn't affected." Fellating the prius. Take these tests in an average area not a rare place that kills performance to make the prius look better

2nd gen Prius is still the goat 😂 I love mine. I'll post some acceleration vids. Hybrids accelerate really well. If they gave you full power at all times they would definitely beat sports cars. There have been times where my prius absolutely launches like a rocket!
Almost any car feels fast driving around in a low gear. Similar reason go carts can feel so fast even when they top out at 45 mph and take a while to get there. Motors give the sense of faster than what they actually are. When you push the accelerator and get instant torque with a jerk that rise in force is fun... not necessarily fast though.
I'm surprised that Prius makes that far. I wonder if Toyota put a Turbo 4 in place of 4 cylinders engine in combination with 2 motors and see what will affected the MPG and Quarter mile. 🙂
Electric has no effect with elevation..Thats why the other 2 cars run 2-3 seconds slower up there than at sea level...Prius has electric power to 40 or so mph then the gas kicks in.. Trans Am of that era run 13's at sea level,Corvette is 14's sea level...I am not a GM fan either.

I found the lt1 engine in the transam being realy weak in power if we check the 1/4time i think he need a rebuild or checking the compression because that not normal 16sec for that engine and car. Except he running like 2.73 gear or lower.
Those wheels on the C4 corvette look so darn good. Classy look
My dynamic trio the goats of tfl. The elite squad. You three are so spectacular phenomenal amazing wholesome people Great video. Tons of fun. Good high note tommy you have been practicing 8:03
Engines:
Starting with 1987 - Updated L98 with 240hp and ~340 torques (Personally wouldn't get anything before '87 due to having much less HP)
ZR1 Only - LT5 "King of the Hill" 375 hp and 370 lb-ft of torque
1992 - 1996 introduced the LT1 with 300HP and ~330 torques
1996 was the only year for the LT4 (rated at 330 HP and ~340 torque). It came standard with any C4 built with a manual transmission/Grand Sport.
Auto's only came with the LT1 but in 1996, the autos came standard equipped with a 3.07 gear ratio (Performance Axel - Code G44/G92.)
Perfect for cruising.
Real race is in the long run, when Prius has 500+ k on the odometer and still runs
I'm starting to really like Kase and that Corvette... That was a good buy ...👏👏👏....
Not gonna lie. 5:38 I wasn’t certain of the corvette was going to win after watching the trans am struggle lol. Glad you won that drag Chase. Tell Tommy he can suck it lol.
Very fun. I wonder what the AWD version would do with say P215 or 225 summer tires on it... 🤔
It would get walked at a lower altitude, but up there a mile above the Corvette is choking so it might be a closer race
3300 lbs is pretty impressive for a new vehicle, particularly one with an EV battery in it. Still heavier than the vette, though.
Dont know about the new one, but the old one had a ridiculously small battery compared to any EV, like not much bigger capacity than an ordinary 12v starter battery.
The old ones could only go like 30 miles at 50 mph with the electric only mode.
I just got one of the new Prius’s as a company car a few days ago, it’s actually really impressive. ( the interior is also a lot nicer than the previous version
What a great combination of your staff …. Love it
I want a older Vette so bad, I love the C3, but the C4 is definitely growing on me
People sleep on the power of a Hybrid....My 2012 Camry XLE hybrid 200hp and 0 to 60 in 6.6 seconds which gives a lot of cars trouble and have beaten much more powerful cars like Camaros in short drag races and many other cars thinking they are just gonna pass me in a breeze and quickly realize?
Try it with a Prius Prime!
that pontiac has a hefty driver weight disadvantage tho lol
Have we replaced the tires on the TA yet?
Having a manual in an old muscle car is key to putting the power down...
Not for those years. The trans am with the auto 275 hp (25 less then the one used) did 0-60 in 5.7 seconds and the converter auto did it in just over 6
"All i do at work these days is drag race." That's my kind of job.
“Back in the 90s”. I’m so old! Thanks for the fun video!
That Corvette was AWESOME.
I love seeing case on the channel
I stay in second and let the engine wind out, and this car behind me is sticking with me.
I was shocked when it was a freaking prius stuck to my bumper through the corner. (They weren't actually that close. I appreciated their driving spirit- it was good fun).
Those things are quick and look good! And get great milage.
Prius is Latin for "holding up traffic in the left lane".😅
They actually pick very cleanly out of my F150's grill.
@@gsxr1189 😂
"unprepped surface" I'm dead lol
Yeah, at least in my Gen2 Prius, you need to know where your battery is. If it's near full, it will help you a lot. If it's closer to empty, which can happen at any given time, it won't help much at all. It does this on it's own without any input from the driver.
Trans am needs driver mod
Bingo
He consistently drives like dogsh*t
Yep
rmember that they’re a mile above sea level
@@mcnuggetapple Is that making the driver light headed?
Love these comparisons.
I knew corvette was gonna win, but now we have a video evidence that an 80s sportscar is still better than the 2020s disposable car))
I think the result would be very difficult racing at sea level. The high altitude won't affect the electric motor output on the prius. Where as the 2 na cars are losing power with just their gas engines.
They always have such crazy numbers in their tests bc of the high altitude. It really makes it hard to view the results objectively.
Test them when it’s 5 degrees outside and clear. Bye bye battery 👍
I love C4 Corvettes! They are totally 80’s and totally badass! 🇺🇸
3:21 I just screamed. YES!
How proud he is of his Prius when he said he was doing 53 mpg.
A few years ago i bought a 2005 Jaguar x-type 2 liter for only 500£ and with 130k miles it was doing 53 mpg too.
This is the US, they arent used to those numbers. Dont have any diesels in smaller cars really.
That year model of the TPI utilized a mass air flow sensor and didn’t make as much power as the later TPI system that utilized speed density, although mass air responded better to mods.
I had a 91’ 305 TPI, 5 speed manual Camaro, metered by speed density (vs mass air), that ran pretty decent (for the time lol). I had a Crane Cams Compu-Cam, injectors out of an LT1, an Edelbrock “big mouth” lower intake with Siamesed runners (can’t remember brand), fuel pressure regular, pulleys, 2.5” y-pipe to a single 3” exhaust and 3” in/out Flowmaster muffler (all mandrel bent) and finally switched to a 4.10 gear (from 3.42).
My best quarter mile pass at Houston Raceway Park was 14.1 @ 101 MPH.
Prior to the gear swap, my top speed was 153 MPH (took about 2 miles if I remember correctly). This was in 5th gear at 5,500 RPM. The car had a reputation for being a highway monster. Ironically, the car was a former Texas Department of Public Safety patrol unit with a certified speedometer. (So I’m guessing my top speed was accurate).
I really miss that car, I had a lot of fun times in it.
Good old underdrive pulleys, do people even do that mod any more?
@@Underpantsniper not really, modern cars have alot of new electrically hungry computers and sound systems to be under driving the alternator and other things,
Seems like around 300hp with that trap speed? Perhaps a bit less?
Top speed seem to indicate not much more than 250hp though, perhaps its a bit of a draggy car though, I havent got the aero drag spec. I guess that top speed still wasnt too bad back in the day compared to many other cars.
So split the difference and say 280-ish hp? Of course, in all the examples above, weather is extremely important for the figures, as I am sure you are well aware. Cheers.
@@Underpantsniper haha prolly not!
@@GoldenCroc weather was high 70’s to low 80’s which isn’t perfect but HRP is near sea level so that helps.
I always guessed between 260-280 hp after the mods.
Like the old vs new races would be interested in similar test with the civic SI and GTI against the Prius
Tommy: "Aw he squished me.... " 🤣🤣😂😂 He must've felt like an insect or something ROTFL!!!1
Great contest.
Toyota has a GR Prius planned.
And the AWD and prime models are slightly faster but need wider tires to really compete or a manual or dsg.
That T/A looks awesome
Would love to have seen it against a manual version of the ta. It was a decent launch difference.
Look closer at the interior shot at 2:03, it has the manual.
I'd like to see it in a fair race, not the "were in a place that kills the performance of a gas engine but MY electric car isn't affected." Fellating the prius. Take these tests in an average area not a rare place that kills performance to make the prius look better
"This Prius can out run that corvette"....Come on man,??!!...really??
"Hold my beer"
I was thinking a ta like that does about 13.8-14 second quarter mile stock but thats when its new and tires, elevation and temperature all effect times.
That trans am needs a driver mod bad. By there the best looking car and could’ve possibly been the fastest if it wasn’t for the baffoon in the seat
16's in an LT1 Trans Am, even at that elevation is laughable, not going to be that slow with a decent driver and in proper stock tune
What if there was human error in variation of trigger time presses on the stopwatch at start and finish of the split second race?
please tune up the trans am, you are going to destroy it if you keep driving it when its that bad
The new Prius Prime should make it closer.
My favourite Corvette. This car looks so great. Timeless design.
1963 split window might be the prettiest car ever made...
aged design turned retro?
@@richfarfugnuven6308I agree. That is definitely the best looking Vette, but I think the C4 is still worthy of 2nd place.
The C4 are the Ugliest vette’s made lol the F3 Trans Am looks way better and even the IROC looks better in the 80’s…
I think some of the early C3 restomods I've seen are the best looking Vettes out there & it takes a lot for me not to give that honor to my C7 Z06 but I don't have 150-200k to spend on one.
I love the add of the Autocross
That corvette is very impressive!! Love the videos with that car in it
The phallic 500 IS BACK LOL... I DONT SEE ANY MERCH ON THAT ONE LMAO
I've been enjoying my new Prius Prime: makes me wonder how it would perform considering its auto EV mode has more HP. Since my previous car was a Prius 2010, my new Prime seems like a speed demon to me.
Dude in the vette looks like the guy from the movie WEIRD SCIENCE who drove the Porsche 928-S! lmaoo
What a fun vid! Nice job!
I love vetted camaros and firebird that's pretty impressive for the prius!! One thing about the new prius is prettier and faster than previous models!
2nd gen Prius is still the goat 😂
I love mine. I'll post some acceleration vids. Hybrids accelerate really well. If they gave you full power at all times they would definitely beat sports cars. There have been times where my prius absolutely launches like a rocket!
This is like comparing a musket to a sling shot haha
Almost any car feels fast driving around in a low gear. Similar reason go carts can feel so fast even when they top out at 45 mph and take a while to get there. Motors give the sense of faster than what they actually are. When you push the accelerator and get instant torque with a jerk that rise in force is fun... not necessarily fast though.
That lt1 needs new valve springs. Mine sounded just like this before i had it replaced. 1.7 rockers and new springs is all she needed.
Trans Am of that era run 13's at sea level,Corvette is 14's sea level...I am not a GM fan either.
so cool to see a new track for handling
