- Another adventure in the life of a retro gaming enthusiast.
It seemed like a good idea at the time.
I actually bought this PS3 yesterday, I just didn't post the video until today.

At every turn I expected catastrophic failures and was prepared to jump on with fixes, and none turned out needed. An excellent bait, sir, simply masterful.
I didn't even know PS3s varied so much 😂 thanks for bringing us with you on this adventure
I'm convinced they did it specifically to confuse me lol. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I just found a fat PS3 (60GB model) at a garage sale last weekend for $10. I took a chance on it since it didn't have any cables and it works!! I'm so happy because now I can play PS1 and PS2 games unlike what my regular PS3 slim could do
That's an incredible find! Nice going!
So I’m sure most people know about the yellow light of death. That issue did happen on ps3 but was notorious on backwards compatibility models. This is because of the 90nm GPU was made incorrectly, and wasn’t fixed until the 80GB PS3s came out, the ones without the ps2 compatibility. They used a 65nm which fixed the issue. It can still get YLOD if the NEC tokens went bad (nec token caps) and will need to be replaced .
All the backwards systems will get YLOD. the GPUs are ticking time bombs waiting to give up. The only way to fix that is to get a Frankenstein mod. Which is a GPU swap from the 90nm to a 65nm or a 40nm GPU. Very hard process and VERY expensive. Trust me, mine cost £346 however I’m very happy with the outcome. Get a Frankenstein ps3 from eBay or get someone to do the repair.
genuinely helpful comment. I'm willing to do a lot to try to save my 60 gig PS3, and I didn't even know that was a thing I could do, so I'll start looking into it. I may not have the experience, but now that I have this PS3, I should at least have the necessary hardware components to perform it, right?
The 4 usb port ps3 had hardware backwards compatibility specifically the cecha01 but I think other models that had 2 usb ports had software emulation for backwards compatibility unless I'm wrong about that.
You are correct. The software compatibility only extends to PS1 games, unfortunately. Some people have suggested I softmod this thing, which I may end up doing. Haven't made up my mind yet, and I'm not really in a hurry.
I've been lucky with my "as-is" thrift store purchases so far. My only PS3 is a slim, so PS2 compatibility was never a question on mine. PS2 over HDMI was a nice perk of the early fats.
Also, when is the full one-handed PowerSlave stream coming?
My guess would be at a later date than the upcoming Donkey Kong Country 2 played with feet stream XD
It is possible to play PS2 games on any PS3 as official PS2 Classics, or Softmodding the system, then convert your backup to a PS2 Classics PKG (similar to PS1 games on PSP), you can even apply Widescreen Patches. Of course, it's not 100% compatible with the entire catalogue like the early models, but most games are.
You can turn PS2 ISOs to PS2 classics and play them on PS3.
ps3. one of the greatest systems created. got my super slim new in 2015 and cherish it constantly since. love resistance 1. the rest of them are cod chasing bullshit. I bought ps3 for backbreaker football and red dead redemption and it was 100% worth it just for those 2 games. grateful I got the system in time to take advantage of some digital sales on the platform before they mostly axed the store. so much to say about ps3. enjoy.
I think I bought mine ahead of MGS4's launch, so I was playing Residtance and Uncharted while I was waiting for MGS4 to release. I still need to play Red Dead Redemption, I've had a copy for over ten years, I just haven't gotten to it yet
It's only work on ps1 and ps3. If you don't see 4 inputs, you only see 2 inputs you don't have back to back to back. 😢
Personally I would avoid the backwards compatible PS3s these days since a lot of them have overheating issues and the yellow light of death, unless you want to open them up and change the thermal paste and do some other things.
I bought a PS3 Super Slim since it runs the coolest and I like the top loading design(less moving parts), and I have a PS2 Slim to play PS2 games. I did have one of these model PS3s in 2009 though, it worked fine, but there was 1 level in Uncharted 2 that would make the fans spin like crazy even with a clean console. I hear later on they had to rush that level and it wasn't coded properly, and maybe that's why it caused the PS3 to act up.
I recently (within the last 3 years) played through Uncharted 1 through 3 on my 60 gig PS3 and the fan noise got pretty intense. I probably am going to attempt to repair the system just to say I tried, but I'm hedging my bets. I have a slim in addition to the 60 gig, which makes the one in this video my third PS3, but also have a couple PS2s lying around. I just really like getting that clean output via HDMI with the smoothing on. I've heard that if you only use the 60 gig to play PS2 and PS1 games, that it could extend the life of that system, but I haven't been able to corroborate that with anyone else's experience.
time to mod that bad boy ..lol and play ps1/ps2 games
i think ur ps3 has the same issue as mine. it doesn't wanna read any dvds but cds and blu rays work fine lol. mine isn't fully backwards compatible either :( but i bought it for $15 at a swapmeet
It was my fault, I forgot that some of the later fat ps3's can't do DVDs. 15 dollars is an AMAZING price though! Well done 👏
Some of the later fat models were stripped of the PS2 backwards compatibility eventually removed completely with the slimline model.
Also good call on Powerslave!
I kind of want to compare how Powerslave runs across different models of PS3, since it's such a fast performing game
@@WookieFragger might make for a cool video if you ask me.
My friend just gave me a backwards compatible one i was so stoked
Dude, you paid too much. I got a PS3 Slim from a Thrift Store for $30.
Wow that’s a great find
it sounds like it has pennies rolling around inside
Oh yeah I forgot to mention, this jawn full of pennies
Thrift stores are nothing but treasure troves
I got two hawaiian shirts for work on the same trip!
