CFM is Cubic Feet per minute. It needs to know how big the opening is you want to measure, example if the duct is 1 foot by 2 feet, that's two cubic feet, you put that into the area of the meter so it knows the 3 inch fan is covering a 2 cubic feet area to give you the total flow for the opening. it does the calculations for you. Measure width X Length to get are. if you measure in inches then divide by 144 (12 inches by 12 inches) for cubic feet. Round duct use "Pie R Squared" formula. . if you need help use TH-cam, there are many videos to help with this. Good luck
Me too on the battery cover! HP 846A version, no pc connection. Just wondering if you have used the average function on cfm, 10x and 2/3 only works on mine!
Every feature and function works well on mine. Aside from that battery door! But I like it overall well enough. The PC version is only really useful if you need graphing and visual data logging over time. Cheers 🍻

The program looks like it has it's origins in early versions of Windows! "COM1' and 'COM4' I think refer to the old notations for serial ports (older versions of PC-connectable devices probably used 9-pin RS232 connections). I guess they did just a bit of modification to the program to allow that to map to USB ports.
Hello. Could I please ask if you could explain how to do a CFM measurement. The manual tells you to input a area input. I have no idea how to figure this out. I am trying to measure the CFM at each register in my home. I have used a basic CFM meter before that didn’t require entering any input. I get that this is more advanced and you can enter the area of the size your measuring. However I don’t really need all that. Any help you can give would be great. Thanks.
I know, the instructions suck! CFM won't tell you anything more or less useful, it will only tell you the same things in a different form of measurement. If all you want to do is match or balance air flow in your home, any measurement will do that. MPH is all you need. Flow will do the same thing as velocity, it's all the same thing but mathematically converted to a different form.
Otherwise, follow these steps exactly in order below:

Presto, the device will now convert flow to CFM. But it's accuracy will depend totally upon your accuracy when you measured the area.

@@Now-Review-This Hey for some reason my units have “disappeared”, i can’t find the mph, m/s, km/h and no matter how many times i press Unit it won’t switch! And i used to be able to do that, but now it is showing CMM and CFM, and it just keeps switching between that and i can’t figure it out, Google didn’t help, and the instructions also didn’t

Try removing the battery, letting it sit for a while or just short out + and -. Install new or known good battery and try again.
How to convert m/s to cubic meter per second? My anemometer showing the velocity in m/s.
Press the #1 button to choose between "Flow" and "Velocity", then press the #5 button to cycle between the available modes of measurement. Any other conversion must be done using math.
You’re driving into an oncoming wind with one of these devices will add the oncoming wind to your vehicle speed if it is accurate, and it will probably show a higher number
"If" I was driving into the wind, it would make a difference yes. However, that speed test was performed on a still day.
