    Beautiful transformation! My SIL and I are going to try and spruce up her Mothers old Lane Cedar Chest. One of the issues is a small section of the veneer seems to have separated & “popped” up. Wondering if I can cut a slit in it and inject some wood glue.

    Thanks and beautiful job. I have that same model of cedar chest. It was my mom’s. Dad painted it some 80s pastel colors. Then I painted it white a few years later. I’ll have to refinish it and good to know the lock can be replaced.

    Great video on restoring a keepsake. Thanks for the info about the locks! Will definitely give them a call as I have a mid 50's Lane chest myself. Great work!

    I was given a Lane cedar chest with “no” damage. Yeah right! The hinges are all messed. The wood is split in the area of one of the hinges and someone cut a piece of the metal strip and screwed it to hold the piece together. I have been searching everywhere where to buy another piece of that metal strip that’s inside. I need a piece about 4’ long - the length of the chest. The main inside is good. I need new hinges as well and I think I saw some at “Rockler”? This chest also has an upholstered top. Someone stapled an ugly shiny aqua color material to the top of it. Im going to remove that and see what the original looks like. Have you had to buy hinges? I did contact Lane about a new lock. They said they are running behind but they will be on the way. I actually have another chest that was my Mom’s. Thanks for the info!

      I've been waiting for a new lock for at least 3 months now. I really hope it comes. I've promised my client that I will install it once it comes in.

    I have one of these from the 40s my grandmother left for me. I am in an apt and really want to restore it. She had painted it creme thick paint. Any suggestions on what grit sandpaper for removing the thick paint and then can I paint on a clear coat I have no sprayer. How do you fix the bottom edge where it is pressboard? Nice job. Love camping. Awesome video. Ty

      Your best bet this to you some type of remover like a paste remover you can get at a Box store. Remember older paints can have lead in them so I surely would not send it and kick up dust. You never wanna use to aggressive of a Sandpaper because you can do damage to the wood. No

    Greetings I’m restoring an MCM lane cedar chest the top had veneer on it so I managed to pull most of it off by hand and now I’m sanding it down the sides and front appear to be cedar but they have black spots I’m not sure what that is I’d like to stain the very top and the very bottom and paint the body but I’m not real sure what to do about these spots I will send a photo If you could send me an email as to where to do that I’ve already done a couple tables and a chest of drawers but this one is cooking my goose I do believe

    Thanks for a good tutorial. What if I don't have a sprayer? Can you still get a good result with the top coat if its brushed on? What product do you use for the clear /top coat?

      I used a foam brush on my cedar chest and it turned out very nicely ^_^

      minwax makes a wipe on poly that gives a good finish. basically use tshirt rags. lightly sand between coats after the third coat. 400 grit paper. probably need 5 coats or more since they are so thin.

    I have this same hope chest. I bought it in 1965. Have not been able to find it on line to determine worth. Did not save paper work. I am trying to find out the name/model #. Do you keep that kind of info.?

      No we don't. Sorry. As far as I can gather cedar chest have more sentimental value than resale value. It's kinda like the old sewing machines, everyone had one so there are tons of them out there.

    I'm going to restore a Lane chest I got secondhand. The top is scratched, but otherwise in great condition. It has lost some of its cedar smell. Can I lightly sand the interior to revive the smell?

    • @5thdimension625
      @5thdimension625 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! It will reactivate the smell. You scan also buy an oil made just for cedar chests that will also promote the smell

    • @johnfrancisrestorations2885

    What are you using for a finish remover?

    • @johnfrancisrestorations2885
      @johnfrancisrestorations2885  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use several different kinds. Ones you can buy from the big box stores work great. Sometime We need a liquid sometimes we use a paste depends on the job.

    Did you strip the sides like the top? Do you rinse off the stripper with something?

    • @johnfrancisrestorations2885
      @johnfrancisrestorations2885  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use lacquer thinner, depending om the remover, water may work too but it leaves residue behind.

    How do you get rid of the musty smell inside the chest?

    • @johnfrancisrestorations2885
      @johnfrancisrestorations2885  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually the 3/4" thick cedar keeps the cedar smell. Since it is untreated wood inside you may have a hard time getting that our. Try a mild cleaner, wipe it down with vodka ( help kill mold) and put a damp rid pack in it for a while. Then a good sanding with 180 grit will get you to some fresh cedar. Fyi, must be solid cedar and not a cedar veneer.

    What stripper did you use?

    • @johnfrancisrestorations2885
      @johnfrancisrestorations2885  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use the citristrip. it's pretty safe. works well but leaves a residue that needs to be cleaned off, or klean strip. any hardware store will have it.
