  • Hogwarts Legacy has finally been released! Here is my Hogwarts EXPERT tour of the castle and my overall thoughts on the game world, gameplay and more!
    Over the last few years, I have built up my nerd credentials when it comes to the layout of Hogwarts Castle. I've built the entire castle in Minecraft and I've made several videos boring people to death about changes made to the castle. So it only seemed appropriate to react to the new Hogwarts Legacy game and dive into what changes have been made.
    Hogwarts Castle is a location featured heavily in the Harry Potter film franchise. This starred SEO-friendly actors such as Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. Hogwarts Legacy is a new game that has released in February 2023 to Playstation 5, Xbox and PC. Okay, I'm done here.

    They had an impossible task of making it accurate to both the movies and books, AND making it actually work logically in a complete 3d space. And they did a fantastic job.

    This version of Hogwarts is very much an amalgamation of both the film version and the book version of the castle and it's fantastic

      It definitely helps that this version is meant to be explored from every angle. They can't choose to put anything off camera, conveniently "forget" to leave space for certain rooms, or put locations inside each other/too far apart. In the game, you get to see it all up close. Game Hogwarts has to *work* in a way that the movie models don't.
      For instance, I like what they did to the Slytherin common room, which is described to be under the lake while also part of a castle perched atop a very tall cliff. Rather than making the dungeon a bajillion floors deep, they had the common room face the small lake behind the castle instead of the great lake below the cliff.

    It would still be very interesting to hear your thoughts on the interior. Personally I love the variation in architectural styles throughout the interior. They went over the top to make each room feel like it was added on 50-60 years after the other and the whole place kinda sprawled outward through the centuries. I can't get enough of it meself. I've played the game for 10 hours now and haven't even gotten my broom yet because I spend all my time just running around the castle

      @@Orthodoge interesting. So if pretending you're an art derector, which direction would you go with it? More realistic, more "gotham city" vibe, more saturated colors and sandstone, and more basic, less fantastical architecture like the first Harry Potter film, or something else entirely. Whadya think?
      To me the game specific "ancient magic trial" areas were my least favorite because they felt very "generic video-game tempel" style. But I though the castle was great. It seems to me like a giant mish mash of inspiration from real world locations, I'm not seeing the Frozen influence anywhere except the Professor Rackham places

    • @Orthodoge

      @@thomascleveland well a lot of the architectural features are greatly exaggerated or trying to imitate medieval designs but making them look kitschy. Look at the clock tower for instance and compare it to the films, the clock face is much larger and juts off the face of the tower, and the Conner quad tower has too much going on up top, then you have the great Hall which has its length cut almost in half because of that useless extra entry room, not to mention the side aisles and the curved end where the teachers sit with the whimsical almost cathedral nave like curved windows (in the movies it was a perpendicular gothic Flat Window behind the teacher seating). And most of the interiors are have a McMansion feel to me, too tall and thin columns, large windows spanning BETWEEN floors(which was never a thing before modern times) it needs to be more grounded in historical architecture and design. More Romanesque/English Gothic/Norman

    Having to actually 3D model a building with interiors, a lot of thought has gone into actually making things work. I love how JK Rowling gave a LOT of creative liberties to the game dev team, basically telling them not to be too fixated on accuracy to the films, but to get the whole feel of Hogwarts and the harry potter franchise in general. Which definitely seems to have worked because you have expressed those exact feelings in this video.

    The extra room I think between the Reception Hall and the Great Hall is for loading. Great Hall has a lot of details, think they needed that buffer.
    Having the corridor that leads straight to the Grand Staircase looks more like how it did for Goblet of Fire too.

    3:08 I think you kinda fail to mention that the Astronomy Tower has been moved southwards, from being in center of the eastern wall of the Transfiguration Courtyard to now being in the southeastern corner of it. Also, the "new big square base" that you describe is pretty much a building that is already there in the HBP model of Hogwarts, they've just plopped the Astronomy Tower on top of it. As you know, in HBP the newly added Astronomy Tower took the place of the Dark Tower, and the DADA tower (which was quite similar to the Astronomy Tower in appearance, just rotated 180 degrees) was removed. In Hogwarts Legacy, the appearance and design of the Astronomy Tower from HBP is kept, but its placement is where the DADA tower used to be, not where it is in the films nor in the famous miniature model of the castle. Pretty big difference imo. Also in Hogwarts Legacy, they kinda re-added the Dark Tower, it is just north of the Astronomy Tower, so quite close to its location in the films (from PoA-OotP). Though it's not a stand-alone tower like in the films, it's on the roof of the square building that serves as a base for the Astronomy Tower. It can even be accessed through a door inside a room in the Charms classroom.

    This is possibly the most beautiful game world I've ever had the pleasure of exploring. Any complaints I have are really just nitpicks and my biggest problem with the game is that I just want more!
    It would have been really cool to get more of those spaces where the inside is larger than the outside, that's something that's super easy to do in games, but they only do it twice as far as I've seen. One being the Ashwinder tent from a side quest which has a button prompt to enter, and the other being a small shop in Hogsmeade that has a few doors on the exterior which all lead to different interiors. Really cool but again, I just want more of it!

    Timestamps for each common room seen from the exterior of the castle:
    0:48 Hufflepuff Exterior: you can find the hufflepuff comon room windows in the garden area outside of the great hall, it looks like a bunch of little hobbit houses but they are round windows instead of doors lol. These are the round windows you see high up in the hufflepuff common room.
    1:12 Ravenclaw Exterior: He points out ravenclaws tower here. Fun fact, if you're in ravenclaw you can land on that roof and enter the common room from there, but non ravenclaws can't even land, you'll get a message saying you aren't able to land here.
    3:06 Griffyndor Exterior: Griffyndor tower is the tower to the left of the clock, with the blue pointed roof and large spot of moss towards the bottom of the roof. it has a shorter tower attached to it's right side. You can also see ravenclaw tower behind it towards the left from this angle.
    7:26 Slytherin Exterior: if you fly to the left through the narrow opening between the cliffs, you will see the slytherin common room windows are right there, they're under the water of course but you can see them :) It's the 3 really tall windows you can find in the common room (if you spam attacks on these windows from the inside, you'll get a secret easter egg by the way) It wasn't shown in the video because he turned around and went back into the courtyard, but if you go there and go through the narrow path to the left, you'll see their windows underwater, just barely out of sight from the nearby courtyard, from where he flew towards them and then returned to the courtyard. He just barely missed having the slytherin windows in the video.

    I've played the game for many, many hours over the past week. I like the game environment so much I've decided never to use fast travel. Walking around the castle is too fun to pass. Even if it is a bit of a hike to get to the Room of Requirement. But it's worth it for the feeling of living in the world.
    That being said, I have some minor gripes with the castle layout. Foremost, perhaps, is how it sometimes feel a bit, what's the word ... unsubstantial? So much space is taken up by corridors and staircases, while other rooms seem disproportionally few, small, and stowed away. Look at the Defense Against the Dark Arts Tower, for instance. It features two classrooms, a set of bathrooms, a teacher's lounge, and two offices. But the tower is the size of city block, and it's five stories tall even without considering the Astronomy Tower built atop it. Most of the space taken up by a nonsensical amount of stairs in the common area. Same with the Grand Staircase Tower. The titular staircase occupies nearly all the space, but it is connected to a very small number of rooms. The Clock Tower contains the clock, two staircases, and the hospital wing. Perhaps most notably, if you go from the entrance hall towards the Great Staircase, you can go up a flight of stairs or stay on the same level and pass the stairs to the kitchen, and still end up in the same location. There's really no reason to have two paths there, other than to fill space.
    My second, and possibly lesser gripe: There doesn't seem to be any good thoroughfares anywhere. It always feels like the route between any two locations involves going through side rooms, up narrow staircases, or through a courtyard or two. There are wide corridors and staircases that seem designed to accommodate large numbers of students on the move, but they don't seem to lead anywhere. Take the Grand Staircase, for instance, or the huge and initially locked pair of doors opposite the entrance door of the Bell Tower. This is the main entrance to the castle from the Hogsmeade direction, but the great doors lead to a basement corridor without any significant side rooms, which eventually ends in a door to a smaller corridor with a staircase that ends up next to the Potions classroom. If you want to go anywhere useful from that entrance, you must go into a side corridor. Likewise, going from the Great Hall to the Defense Against the Dark Arts Tower requires you to snake around the Faculty Tower basement and involves at least two spiral staircases. Then again, that's pretty much how the school is described in the books, so there's not as many points to dock there. It feels entirely canonically accurate that every student of Hogwarts spends at least a few weeks cursing the architect who designed the place.

    Interior-wise, I love 90% of it. I love their Kew Gardens 'Palm House' take on the greenhouses. The common rooms are amazing! The library, hospital wing and DADA/Astronomy Tower are really well done, and I really like their interpretation of the Marble Staircase. Only the banner hall (where Sir Cadogan's portait hangs) feels poorly done.
    There are two locations missing that I'm a lil disappointed by, as they are both iconic locations in the early movies: 1) The Durham chapter house classroom in the Transfiguration courtyard. 2) The Alnwick castle version of the East Tower. They easily could've added the owlery hill and Quidditch pitch AND kept the Alnwick look to the training grounds.

    • @Codraroll
      @Codraroll ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Indeed, and they've done a great job of it. It's so weird to walk into a room and *recognize it* even if it was never in the films. Like the kitchen, the trophy room, or the Deathday party room. They somehow look familiar even though I've never seen them before.
      Oh, and you easily understand how students tend to lose their way in the castle. There are few routes between any two locations that appear to make any sort of sense. Going from the Great Hall to the Library, for instance.

      Also Hogwarts changed movie-to movie. That is why we have 2x Hagrid's huts here. For example the stone bridge is in original position in the game, while it changed for Dathly Hallows into becoming the Main Entrance to Hogwarts. Here the main entrance is still the boathouse.

    • @Codraroll
      @Codraroll ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@thevikingbear2343 I would argue that the main entrance to Hogwarts as portrayed in the game is in the Bell Towers, as they face the road to Hogsmeade. Then again, that entrance is on the opposite side of the school from the Entrance Hall, which kind of undermines the purpose of the latter. Likewise, the Clocktower entrance is also serviced by a (minor) road, but it's located quite far from the Entrance Hall too. Perhaps it is assumed that most visitors to Hogwarts fly into the place?

    It has been stated by J.K. Rowling that Hogwarts is impossible to map because the rooms are constantly changing locations. This would explain why certain rooms are in different locations. Just because in the main books moaning myrtles bathroom is on the second floor doesn’t mean it was always located there. IMO the developers did a fantastic job recreating the castle. They really paid attention to small details. For example you can visit the area where the first year boats dock, which is somewhere never seen in the films or movies, but they included it nonetheless to build immersion. This attention to detail extends to all parts of the game world including hogsmeade, and the surrounding areas.

    So this game is nearly perfect. I honestly never thought we’d get a game like this that truly makes me feel like I’m in the Wizarding World as a Hogwarts student. It’s mind blowing. But I have 5 criticisms that I’ve noticed many agree on and I thought this could help to spread the word.
    1.) This game is filled to the brim with bugs and it’s maddening. Sometimes I just can’t press X anywhere on the menu while in game meaning I have to completely quit the game, legendary chests will bug out and not let you come back to them if your gear slots were previously full even though other chests let you, during a mission the rumble on both my controllers busted and it was 100% from the game because they worked perfectly as soon as I quit and restarted the game, some of the mirror moths just don’t show up, and finally (most annoyingly) is what I like to call the controller shutdown. It’s when for this game and this game only the controller starts to breakdown from playing this game. Stick drift starts to happen, the buttons aren’t super responsive, the camera gets all wonky. Usually happens after playing the game for a couple of hours. So then I switch to my other controller and then a couple of hours later it starts to happen again. And no it’s not my controllers, it only happens with this game (I’m on PS5 by the way). And these are only a few of the bugs I’ve experienced.
    2.) You can’t change the seasons after you beat the game. That’s insane. No other game, especially a story based single player RPG, does this.
    3.) You can’t use reducto or expulso even though they’re very common spells and you can hear the Ashwinders use reducto and Professor Sharp use expulso. I obviously understand not being able to use the super powerful and unique heavy attacks that are used by the Ashwinders but these two are staple spells.
    4.) Basic attack. That’s it. Like what is it? Is this just taking notes from the films where sometimes characters use their wands but without using any specific spells? Not even non-verbal ones. What is basic attack?
    5.) Finally I don’t like how after you beat everything you can’t even say hi to your friends and professors. These lines are already recorded since we hear them throughout the game so why can’t we just say hi to them while walking around the castle? It’s a small thing that would immensely add to the liveliness of the game’s world. It feels rather lonely after completing the main and side-quests.
    But yeah everything else is perfect in this game but these five criticisms are very major. Well mostly the first three. The last two are small but in my opinion they’re important. Number five is very important to me personally.

    • @Arkthus
      @Arkthus ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To point 4 I'd say it's a gameplay stuff. You can't have all complex attacks (meaning having one button pressed and a second to start a spell) you need a simple attack with only one button so the fight stay dynamic and the combat can feel engaging and fun.

    • @Keanine
      @Keanine ปีที่แล้ว +5

      2 and 5 would be pretty major to me. I honestly think there should have been a sandbox mode from the start which just kind of plays like Bully. You have classes and you're a normal student instead of the main character, and you can just enjoy the atmosphere. Without seasons or interactions you sort of lose some of that atmosphere
      I do plan to try out the game one day, but I need to figure out a way where Rowling gets limited or no royalties from it lol. Hopefully I can borrow it from someone or something

      @@Arkthus The problem isn't that the basic attack *exists*, it's more that there's no good explanation of *what* it is. It seems to be a minor blasting spell of sorts, but the game doesn't ever take a moment to anchor it in any sort of lore-wise explanation.

    Exterior is great, but I have some big problems with interior.
    1. Myrtle's Bathroom is now in DUngeons for some reason, when it was described as a bathroom on Second floor
    2. Grand Staircase in the game is basically useless. In movie version it is in a square room because many corridors surround Grand Staircase, which later on fit with the round shape of the main tower. As for useless part, the Staircase is a heart of Hogwarts, alongside the Great Hall. The Grand Staircase should have multiple corrdiors that would lead to other parts of the castle and it's a confusing mess on how it works. HL's Staircase doesn't do that. It's just a spiral staircase that leads you to basically four places from the Great Hall: Third Floor Corridor, Ravenclaw Tower corridor, Dungeons and 7th Floor, which is entirely made out of Trophy Room.
    3. Room of Requirement is now located in Astronomy Tower, along with Ballet Trolls tapestry for some reason, while they should've been located on 7th floor in the Main Tower.
    Some of the choices devs did are quite strange, considering they wanted to do a book accurate interior.

    • @hogwartsexpert
      @hogwartsexpert  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah good points there, some of those interior changes have confused me a bit too. I was disappointed that the grand staircase doesn't lead to much as well. @@hogwartsexpert It seems like they've expanded the Right Wing of the castle (where Central Hub is), but reduced many locations from the Left Wing (Great Hall, Main Tower). That's some strange changes, imo, as the Left Wing is more iconic than the Right One (because of the films). But tbh, Right Wing has the perfect layout for book version of Hogwarts, which is probably why it was made into a place where every class happens.

      Myrtle's bathroom doesn't really make sense on the 2nd floor though, would be strange to have the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets there when it leads underground. To me it's a change that made more sense.

    • @inspector_beyond
      @inspector_beyond ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Arkthus But here's a thing - films never dewcribed where exactly Myrtle's bathroom is. The book did. In fact, couple of times. First it was described on the First Floor, but later on it was said to be on Second Floor.
      As for how logical it is, just look at any other bathrooms in the game and tell me how possible it is to have a sewage system from there. Rememeber, Basilisk was moving through Hogwarts' pipes system, which means that there were a lot of big enough pipes through Hogwarts to fit him there. Having an entrance to Chamber of Secrets on upper floors makes as much sence as having sewage system on higher floors.

From the many exterior terraces and gardens, all the little interior alcoves and displays, the wondrous variation in the Common rooms - it's a tremendous achievement. Considering that the magical world can cheat with space expansion charms (the lake seems like a place likely to be magically much bigger than it appears) - and does cheat with Hogwarts' walls being taller than would be possible with magical augmentation - the castle does a great job of portraying a structure with multiple generations of expansion being reflected in the widely variable architectural styles. It is so very easy to dream yourself into the life of a routine student here.

    The castle is amazing but I honestly feel after a few hours (15+) it begins to get repetitive. You seem to always pass through the same areas, which make sense, but a lot of the castle is locked up at first and honestly, even when you unlock it, it still ends up feeling a bit small. I wish there were more interiors, more classrooms, etc. The great hall should be longer, they basically added a room before it that should have just been the great hall too.
    The castle I think should be physically bigger, the actual model, should be about 15-20% bigger. It feels kinda small as you fly through the outside. It's just that the movies always made Hogwarts feel like this endless place full of mysteries, and the game's castle, while beautiful and amazing, feels kinda small. Maybe it's the lack of a proper grand staircase, that actually leads to 7 different floors. There's no Fluffy room (or the trials from the first book, but I didn't really expect those), and it does feel different from the Hogwarts of the movies. There isn't really any long hallways like in the first movies, or the more generic looking classrooms that Snape and Quirrel taught in the first movie.

    • @HazbinHotelStaff
      @HazbinHotelStaff ปีที่แล้ว

      The difference between the movies and the games is theatrics. Movies always tend to exaggerate on designs and areas for benefit of the movies looking more appealing. However they’ve stuck more with the books designs. The grand staircase does look like it should have more rooms but that’s how it is in the books. Also the grand staircase is round because that also makes more sense cuz they were going by the books to make it more accurate for the interior to match up with the exterior. I mean can you imagine a round building with a box shaped interior? It’s like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. The size of the school looks accurate because if it was bigger, it would simply be too big just for a school. I’ve wandered around the school for weeks and I just discovered a new part of it that I’ve never known about and is very big inside. The school is so grand and awesome and they’ve really did well on sticking with the original designs from the books. And in the books is where all the real magic happens.

    I consider Hogwarts Legacy's geography to be more canonical than the movies, keeping in mind the time gap, of course. Change my mind.
    For instance, in the films, the Great Hall looks unconfortably tight and overcrowded-- a sign of bad design, especially considering the castle is supposed able to resize itself and be bigger on the inside --, most spaces look bland and outright inconsistent, stuff is missing or added which contradicts the source material, and the Great Staircase is really scuffed. The game is better.
    Of course it has its problems: the lake is supposed to be south, not east, Hogsmeade should be north of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade Station to the south of the lake, and the Forbidden Forest should be closer. But I have the impression Rowling sucks at geography and her own descriptions don't always make sense either; why is the West Wing to the east of the Quad? Unless the movie's castle is mirrored, of course.
    Thus this is, without a doubt, the definitive version of the castle, overwriting the movies, bar only the books of course. But there shouldn't be much contradiction there at all.

    The only thing I HATE from the game is the Great Hall, by FAR my favorite part of Hogwarts and the movie version is very very dear to my heart, I personally don't care about the positioning of the giant hourglasses, I like how both do them, but the game seems to be too wide and to short, I mainly believe it's because of the much shorter house tables, the overly wide empty space between the tables and the door and the longer distance between the tables and the fireplace, I'm not a big fan of the professor table design either but considering the time period it's okay, aside from that I REALLY wished the Grand Staircase was a better mix between the game and the movies, I LOVE the movie version but I understand it makes more sense to be a round space rather than squared considered the tower that it's in, but the excessive amount of portraits and the way the stairs shifted are miles better than the game, it's feels too bland and loses a lot of the desorienting almost maze like charm the movie version has, which is my main the reason to be my second favorite part of the castle, it's what makes it so iconic and unique Imo, aside from that (and maaaybe the flying class area too lol) I have no notes for the rest of the castle, amazing job, hopefully they make more games in the future and slightly modernize some areas so it resembles even more what we as fans got use to but still keeping a lot of what we already have from this first game!

    1. Buffer rooms were added between large rooms to help seam loading of the next cell, otherwise there’d be more stalling and buffering between doors, slowing the progress.
    2. Idk how you can even compare this design to the movies when the movies literally changed designs drastically between nearly every film; adding or adjusting towers, rooms, courts, gardens, etc. Like…. It changed soooooo much between movies 1 and 2, then to 3, to 4, etc. If all the movies were the same layout, then you’d have a point. But they’re not. So there’s no “canon” design.
    3. You’re clearly playing on a lower end PC, which is the issue with PCs. The game will never be “optimized” to all PC hardware and software, whereas they can lock it to consoles to keep it consistent and seem less. Get a better PC, or play on current gen consoles. Whining about the game when you’re clearly on a potato computer isn’t a good look, bud.
