I much prefer this combination of books, films and new ideas to a complete copy of the films! Obviously the films were restricted by the setbuilding and actual on-location shooting, but it always bothered me how the entire Gryffindor house was supposed to use about five armchairs in the common room, or how few seats there were in the Great Hall. I'm especially in love with the greenhouses and the new marble(?) corridors with all the metallic inlays. The films changed so much of Howarts to be more cinematic (which I enjoy) so I'm excited to see how this new Hogwarts embraces its medium as well :)
Hahaha, you make a good point about the size of the common room. It would need to be way bigger to accommodate every year group. But I agree, there's definitely some nice influences that have been added from the books!
THI!! in the movies it seems the common room was reserved for Harry and friends and the rest of gryffindor can go pound sand outside "you no chosen one plebs" :D
Speaking of the great hall… considering this part from the behind the scenes video I think it lost some length and there are less seats compared to the movie version th-cam.com/video/IIALvzgdXJE/w-d-xo.htmlm7s Otherwise I have the impression that all parts of the castle have lost height 0:24 or do you think this is more because the areas have been expanded. The great hall is perhaps just wider and doesn't look as narrow and high as a result. the towers on the right and the astronomy tower seem to have been shortened, which of course can be due to the fact that they had to be filled with meaningful content.
Same. Every Harry Potter game and movie has had it's own interpretation of the source material when it comes to visually represent it. And that's awesome I think. They aren't supposed to look alike. Btw I personally think it's pretty obvious that magic is involved so they have multiple instances of the same common room sorted by age and year. When you open the door you see the area where your classmates are basically. That way the older students don't have to deal with 11 year olds all the time either
The common rooms look much better in this. Always thought the common rooms looked way too small in the films. After all there are hundreds of Hogwarts students. Feels more alive with Students scattered all over the place, some studying , others playing, a few chatting. The Film common rooms looked like it was made only for a handful of students.
I think what the team said they did was consult the books canon descriptions first, then watched the films for references to rooms that the books might not go into detail. This seems to be the perfect match of book interpretation and film.
Another reason to make interiors larger is for NPC pathing, if areas arent big enough it can interfere with the AI characters ability to move around. I think this is better, the Movie interiors always seemed too small for a school with 1000 students (250 per house) in canon. Which also seems off, a school with 7 years would have more than just 1000 students. JK didnt think that through, Harry Potter Theory channel actually did a video on this very topic.
@@SagaciousNihilistactually I heard there isn’t 1000 students at Hogwarts. JK Rowling did say that but that’s not how many students her stories actually depict. More likely there is about 400 students at Hogwarts. I always imagined there would be much more because Hogwarts seems huge but there really isn’t. In the first movie you see all the new gryffindor first years being taken to the common room and there’s only about 15 of them. That would mean there’s about 60 in the whole year level and about 420 in the whole school.
@@rachelcookie321 School houses in British private schools are actually quite small. But most schools have a lot more than four houses, usually at least a dozen.
The hut you described as "Care takers" is actually the Care of Magical Creatures class room. The Grounds Keepers hut is a bit further beyond that area. They moved the forbidden forest as welll
Exactly my thoughts, too. This game takes place long enough in the past that it's easy for there to be a different layout. And you gotta remember that the school is over 1,000 YEARS old, so it's obviously gotta get patched up every now and then, just like buildings in the real world.
They are very much marrying the mainstream version of Hogwarts from the films to various aspects from the book. In the books, the Gryffindor Common Room was always down the end of a corridor lined with other paintings, and indeed the wood paneled look of it in this game harkens back to the appearance of the entrance in the early video games. Also, there should be a LOT more magical stairs in Hogwarts other than the main one, which was only ever really a trait from the movies. In the books, it's flat out said that there are 142 staircases in the castle, and that a lot of them move around and change. They're probably going to give us a real taste of that.
Ahh that's neat, it's been ages since I've read the books so I didn't remember that. I think the problem is as soon as the films came out, the film version of the castle was all I could picture in my head when I read the later entries. Hope that's the case about the staircases, it would suck if they've changed it.
@@japes7 it would expand on the methods of exploration, and would just be a pre-existing perfect reason to block off certain areas of the map until you are supposed to get there. So it makes a lot of sense to implement that unless it's a BOTW-esque "go anywhere from the beginning" style of game.
It takes details from the books, aesthetics from the movies, practicalities for a video game and takes into account the century time gap between them all. It's perfect. It's obvious so much love has been poured into this. Cannot wait.
Well the fireplace being away from the window in the games makes way more sense. It's a castle and old architecture doesn't really have good isolation. That means a fireplace right next to a window/outer wall reduces the efficency of the fireplace itself. Look at old homes, the fireplace there is always as close to the center as possible. And that means that it makes much more sense in the game then in the movie. And I believe they only did it in the movie that way, because they wanted as much natural lighting as possible.
While I agree, I do think they would probably have a spell for temperature regulation, and so things that matter for us as mere muggles, may not be as important for them
I'm really happy that they put Gryffindor down a corridor again like in the books. The location of the entrance in in the third film and on make no sense. The developers also have confirmed that they designed a lot of hogwarts to be s mix of the books and movies, so I thino we'll see a lot morebook accuracy with some locations. I have a feeling the outside will be mostly movie accurate and the inside will be mostly book accurate because we didn't see everything in the movies.
I like your analysis of the castle, but saying they didn't keep it faithful to the films isn't doing justice to the work Avalanche put into the castle. Their main source inspiration for the castle and the game has been the source material, which means the books. The way they designed the castle is made with the books in mind, then combining it with stuff seen in the movies to keep it easily recognizable to the players and finally adding/changing a few areas for gameplay purposes. Saying they were unfaithful to the movies is just not the right way of talking about their efforts.
I think the work they've done looks amazing so far. This video isn't to comment on their efforts, just to take a look at how it compares to the version of the castle we saw in the films!
I personally prefer they are trying to be more faithful to the books rather than do a carbon copy of the movie tbh. The books are the original source and the only true canon imo (I grew up and adore the movies and there were some things they did better there such as the walkway introduced in the 3rd film and the overall aesthetic of the castle)
@@DrPOP-jp7eb I wonder how someone can just assume what somebody else thought was the main point of the video. Like, did you actually read my comment? I disagreed with a remark in his video, not the video as a whole.
I mean, in the movie the castle was changing all the time anyway. It's just my headcanon that the castle changes depending on whatever is needed for that specific school year. Basically that it functions like the room of requirement. Remove a tower, add a tower, extend a tower, you know the drill. A do like it that the new roofs on the towers in the clock tower courtyard look like they're starting to fall appart already, resulting into them being gone altogether during the movies. I also like how the datda classroom is the exact same, as we know that it will be like that during the fb movies. Meaning it's probably one of the oldest parts of the castle that has remained the same for the longest amount of time.
6:41 this is Beasts Class. Hagrids Hut, technically Caretakers Hut since Hagrid doesn't live there yet, is indeed in the location it's at from Prisoner of Azkaban and onwards.
I think a lot of people forget that it's based in the 1800s as well as being a magical castle, things being in different places or bigger/smaller seems normal to me
You should read the books again. I'll bet you would think differently. One example is that the prefect bathroom looks really accurate. With the diving board added. I didn't like the old industrial look in the movies.
Hey, architecture major here! Concerning the grand staircase, I’m thinking their team didn’t have much of a choice and had to change it into a circular layout because they made it clear in the commentary section that this castle will make sense on the inside as it does on the outside. This may mean unlike the Order of the Phoenix and Half Blooded Prince games, they want a complete castle that shouldn’t rely on map changes when you enter a separate room. Those games had them in order to spare the dummies at EA the work of creating an actual room-by-room castle. I love the layout of the movie version staircase too but if you think about it, there’s no way all those doors and shortcuts would lead to a logical location that would maintain the architectural integrity of the exterior.
The exterior of gryffindor tower is round and massive but the staircase is more rectangular. Which means that leaves room for the rooms to arch around the staircase behind the portraits and passageways for example. So it can definitely still make sense.
@@obiwankenobi687 First of all, that tower with the changing staircases is not the Gryffindor tower, its the turris magna. Also it still doesn't make sense because in the films it's shown to be much bigher on the inside than it is on the inside. It just does'nt match up.
@@Popcorn-ch7uy but it’s absolutely humongous though so it definitely makes sense for the rectangular room for the staircases as well as rooms around their perimeter to exist
I wholy agree. Furthermore, if one is to accept the movies' layout of the castle, instead of the more "traditional" floor plan J. K. Rowling had in her mind (which would make the castle look quite ordinary in some ways), then we have to consider the major role magic would have in its building process and functioning. In the books we are often told how structures built by wizards look a bit off, unsafe, and sometimes defy logic and physics. That's what happens with The Burrow, for example. Considering the way Hogwarts is built in the movies, that becomes essential when trying to make sense of the floor plan. How does a portrait, located inside a huge round tower, lead into a smaller tower in a separate building? Magic. It doesn't have to make sense the way muggle architecture does. Heck, even the sudden changes of locations is mentioned in the books, although Hagrid's hut and the Gryffindor common room never moved in canon. But I do appreciate that the Hogwarts Legacy developers are trying to make a more sound floor plan somewhat closer to what Rowling originally envisioned. I do hope that some of the mystery and surrealism is kept, though.
I am pretty sure, but I might be wrong, that the tower at 1:34 is actually ravenclaw's common room based on certain details in the common room reveal trailer and from what I have heard from other youtubers' videos.
Alot of what i noticed with the game versus the movies, is that they said they did it mostly doing it by the book descriptions, and not the movie descriptions, but adding things that were like the films to a degree, but the developers talked about the books being the main focus here for recreation, and less on the movies.
The books also talk about how the castle moves and change on its own, a very good plot point to help with all the varying versions of the castle, the movies cut alot of corners with the castle only really detailing the parts of the castle seen, the game looks like they faithfully created the Castel with a nice merger of the books and the movies, even including the house elves in the kitchens under the great hall
To me, this is the canon version of hogwarts. It's perfect lol, a great combination of the ideas & details from the books with the iconic look from the movie, while being more creative then either with a lot of the little details
2:58 they also decreased the teachers table of the harry potter movies. In the first 2 movies the teacher table has a something like U-form where in the later movies it's just a straight table.
I have a feeling they’ve changed the grand staircase from the movie and interpreted it with their own version but honestly it’s not a deal breaker for me. They’ve nailed other aspects such as the common room, great hall and they even have the kitchen! I’m very satisfied but yeah they could still bring the grand staircase from the movies but even if they don’t it’s fine for me. Anyways amazing video!
Yeah as long as it feels like Hogwarts when exploring it and the game itself is fun, then I think I'll forgive it for not being a complete recreation of the films.
For me, it makes sense. This game takes place at least 100 years before the films and books, so I can imagine a different architectural structure. I mean, as far as I know, we don't know for a fact if the castle was built with those staircases, or if it had been remodeled to fit them. In my opinion, a remodel makes a lot of sense.
I’m pretty sure the grand staircase moved like the movies in the book. But it makes more sense in the game. I’m pretty sure the castle can change over a century
it bugs me he never acknowledged that the book has descriptions that the film doesn't always line up with and he only cares about the movie. just because it didn't line up with a movie doesn't automatically mean its 'new' it could also just be the visual representation of what was actually described in the book that the film didn't or couldn't replicate 1:1. does this mean he also loves the idea that the film butchered the ravenclaw mascot >:
Hi I'm also a nerd for the castle and have done a lot of analysis myself thanks for your previous videos too. Here's some things to add that I've noticed. 1. DADA classroom is not curved like in the movies. People noticed that it was impossible for it to be curved because it doesn't match any possible exterior of the castle in the movies, I've been trying to locate it based on windows but haven't quite done so. 2. I suspect that the new tower near the turrus magnus is the Ravenclaw common room. It matches the exterior based on the windows if you look at screenshots and extends back a bit. 3. I agree that the new grand staircase is circular. Personally I think that makes sense because it needs to fit rooms (if you think about it all those staircases have nowhere to go in the movies) 4. One of the new shots from the 14min footage shows the interior of the viaduct entrance (check the exterior windows from reveal trailer) I can send screenshots. 5. You notice that the great hall is extended this is because it has the entrance hall inspired by movies 1 and 2 in front of it (check the windows), in the games (5 and 6)they put it as the viaduct entrance kind of but they've combined the best of everything and put the entrance hall, courtyard and hall altogether and the viaduct entrance looks new as I mentioned before. 6. Herbology greenhouses reminds me of paxton's glass palace an architectural feat that seems like a nice inspiration relative to the time this is set. 7. The history of magic classroom is possibly looking out onto the new fountain courtyard if you check the stained glass windows from the new footage but I can't be certain. 8. I like that the gryffindor portrait is in a corridor and not in the grand staircase, which was only done in movie 3 to create the cadigan scene and shouldn't be there imo.
Nice spots, I'll have to have a closer look for most of them! Looking forward to actually playing the game and getting to find out for sure. The staircases not leading anywhere always bugged me hahah. That's why I actually liked the common room entrance being moved to the top of the staircase.
I was looking for such a detailed comment like yours! I've also been trying to spot rooms and places from the exterior, but I haven't actually figured out where the Gryffindor common room is. It should be in a Tower with a corridor attached to it, but I can't find it (maybe we're missing the only angle that we need). Also, the fact that the Ravenclaw Tower doesn't have windows for the dorms scares me a bit (I thought we would find them right below the common room windows).
@@hu3sto I think the gryffindor tower is probably the one east of the hospital wing, south of the clock tower, in the northeast corner of the buildings that surround the interior courtyard behind the turrus Magnus
At 7:27 that isn't the grand staircase area. Those are staircases in the wing below the Ravenclaw common room that lead down to some of the underground portions of the castle.
Great video, thanks Ben! 2 points I'd want to add: - the little conical roofs on the ends of the Clock Tower Courtyard were in the film version. They were introduced in The Order of the Phoenix. - The Astronomy Tower has been moved in Hogwarts Legacy. It doesn't cut into the Transfiguration courtyard anymore. It looks like it's been moved back to where the original Defence Against the Dark Arts tower used to be, but it's retained its orientation so it's the inverse of the DADA tower.
Wait so the grand starcase in Deathly Hallows was that weird massive room where they were fighting? I never knew that, because its just so radically different from the previous movies so I thought it was just a new random place in the castle we have never seen before.
I consider Hogwarts Legacy's geography to be more canonical than the movies, keeping in mind the time gap, of course. Change my mind. For instance, in the films, the Great Hall looks unconfortably tight and overcrowded-- a sign of bad design, especially considering the castle is supposed able to resize itself and be bigger on the inside --, most spaces look bland and outright inconsistent, stuff is missing or added which contradicts the source material, and the Great Staircase is really scuffed. The game is better. Of course it has its problems: the lake is supposed to be south, not east, Hogsmeade should be north of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade Station to the south of the lake, and the Forbidden Forest should be closer. But I have the impression Rowling sucks at geography and her own descriptions don't always make sense either; why is the West Wing to the east of the Quad? Unless the movie's castle is mirrored, of course. Thus this is, without a doubt, the definitive version of the castle, overwriting the movies, bar only the books of course. But there shouldn't be much contradiction there at all. PS: The Gryffindor common room is at the end of the Gryffindor corridor. That is book truth. The Staircase location is just wrong. The movies's Great Staircase is questionable too. The game's seem more accurate.
11 months later we now know this takes place in 1899 not the 1990's so a lot of these changes make sense as the age wearing down structures and renovations having to be made and also that wasn't Hagrids hut at 6:43
@Build It With Ben It really sad if you are comparing them with movies. The movies does Not do justice to Hogwarts from the books, not that I don't understand the film makers as finding a Castle like Hogwarts is difficult even if you are making a set model of the said castle. A lot of different factors goes in while making the films. Hogwarts from the books is different that what you see in the movies. Also this is 1890 so its 101 years before Harry enter Hogwarts. Much may change in the structure of the castle itself. I would be slightly disappointed if the interiors and exteriors looks exactly like the movies specially those super small common rooms in the movies. I would wholeheartedly request you to go through the books and make a video comparing the game to the books. Thanking You for taking you time on making this video.
I loved your video. I just want to mention the place you called as "Hagrid's hut" is actually the Care of Magical Creatures Class Hut. The groundkeeper one is going down south to Lower Hogsfield, passing throught the clock tower courtyard bridge :)
It’s a fusion between the books and films but there’s a certain degree of leeway with the fact it’s about a century earlier so some of the exterior walls or the moving staircases could be actually be magically re engineered. Especially the green houses and a few extra towers.
7:26 - Greetings. it is not the same location as the moving stairs this is a new location that has not been shown in the movies before and can be found in the game HP Deathly Hallows
9:34 in the months since this was published, the devs have confirmed the Chamber of Secrets is not in the game; they haven’t confirmed it, but that statue is almost certainly Merlin
The entrance location for Gryffindor room is also different in movie and the game. In the movie it was located straight next to the moving stairs while in the game it was located in corner of some hall. And also seemingly ravenclaw room location is also different in movie and game. There is a scene in first movie where the first year students are guided to their room and it show the Gryffindor and ravenclaw students in the moving stairs area. It showed that the ravenclaw student went downstairs while in the game ravenclaw room location is in the highest level among all houses
Thanks for your informative video! I'm very excited to explore the Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff common rooms as they have never been depicted in the films.
It makes sense that it wouldn't be exactly the same. Regardless of moved furniture and some architectural structures, we need to bear in mind that there is over a century between theses entries, so it would make absolutely no sense for any inhabited man-made structure, especially magical one, to maintain it's exact structure for even a decade. Also, with regards to the Grand Staircase, watch the original reveal trailer, where it clearly shows the actual Grand Staircase looking just as it should. And locations like the Prefect bathroom, it's more book description than movie depiction.
Agreed! Although someone else said that about the grand stairccase in the reveal trailer and I've gone back and checked and it's not in that. Could you give a timecode to where you think it's shown because I just can't see it?
@@hogwartsexpert Apologies for the 5 month late reply! Only saw it now, re-watching the video! In the Hogwarts Legacy State of Play Official Gameplay Reveal it's briefly at 10:55 as our character walks down the stairs from what looks like pretty high up. It's very brief though.
The fireplace in the Gryffindor common room IS on the same side as the movie. The angle is what's different. Notice the circular hole as the entrance, making the fireplace on the right hand side of who comes in
I think the circular hole you refer to is actually the door that leads upstairs to the dorms and not the entrance. Hard to know without playing it though!
If your basing it off the movies in comparison yup your correct. But i think the studio mainly are trying to go off the books version of Hogwarts which im all for. Plus i really like that the common rooms and great hall are a lot bigger. Because the thing that annoyed me in the movies was that the common room in Griffindor was way too small to fit all those kids that were sitting in the great hall. Hopefully the game gives more context. But im really happy with what they did.
Really, I'm not bothered by the changes in the game compared to the films. But I think they are also trying to bring in the concepts that were described in the books. But really people should worry too much about every single detail and complain that "oh, that wasn't in the books/films" but they should enjoy how much effort the game developers have put in to recreate this iconic place. By keeping most things the same but changing it to remind and create this feeling that players are in the 1800s.
Actually, DADA classroom has some differences, minor but still changes. FOr example, the balcony in front of teacher's office is lower and wider, plus it has few collumns, the film one was narrower, higher and with no columns. But also a mintor detail - this classroom has ben recreated from the early films one, because in Order of the Phoenix (which is the last time we saw this classroom in the films) the classroom has a big window where the ladder to teacher's office begins, in previous films that art of the wall had only minor window on a vary high place of it.
yes i have been watching alot of the experienced hogwarts gamers wander around the hogwarts legacy game and their first reaction is to say Merlin, as a Merlin statue , with the mythology of Merlin's beard
I'm actually disappointed by how much the castle looks like it does in the films. I was hoping they'd work completely from the books as the films changed so much it never felt like Hogwarts to me....even though I watched the first 3 films before reading the books
What I like about looking at the different castle versions is thinking about how the castle might have change just due to the course of history. Like the charms classroom is likely the same but maybe a new professor didn't like the stairs and removed it. The grounds and walls maybe get changed by certain events. New headmaster likes something different and changes it a bit. That's cool to think about.
Ah, you did it! Brilliant analysis as always! I really like this version of Hogwarts. Super happy that they picked the Half-Blood Prince version to modify and not the one from Deathly Hallows with the stupid viaduct movement.
To be honest I liked the new viaduct location, it never made sense to me that you could not access the Entrance Courtyard and the Great Hall from outside the castle. How are the carriages from Hogsmeade dropping students at the Great Hall at the start of term if they can’t get to it? In the current design students would have had to cross the whole castle from the gates to the Great Hall.
@@rakdar1714 The answer to your query is provided in the books and in an early trailer for Hogwarts Legacy where we see a flying carriage land in the courtyard. The carriages are actually pulled by Thestrals, they're creatures that are normally invisible, only people who have witnessed death can see them. So, if needed, the carriages can fly, lol.
@@EobardKhan You're right and wrong. The careiages are pulled by thestrals but in the books they don't fly the careiages, they just pull them like horses.
@@Popcorn-ch7uyThe developers of Hogwarts Legacy make it clear that their version of Hogwarts was formed by marrying its aspects and details from the books and films. Although, the flying carriage we saw in the trailer could just be an enchanted carriage, and not bound to a thestral.
Mate, you really should make more video's! reacting to hogwarts recreations for example! in minecraft, roblox, planet coaster etc. Or reacting to some other video's on youtube, i saw people making miniature castles for example. And i would love to see your comment about the original drawing by rowling compared to the castle now, or the castles at universal. I love your video's man! keep it up and i would love to see more!
Which castle are we talking about? Because the Hogwarts Castle design for Chris Columbus (film one and two), Alfonso Cuaron (film 3), Mike Newell (Goblet of Fire), and David Yates films 5, 6 and 7 was actually different for each of the directors. Also the courtyard for film 8 was expanded for the Voldemort-Harry fight, so the design changed again.
It's closest to Half Blood Prince as it features all of the additions made to the castle through 1-6 but doesn't feature the changes made in Deathly Hallows such as the added viaduct, expanded courtyard and new grand staircase.
For some reason, in the Deathly Hallows Part 2 I always assumed that particular stairs area wasn’t the Grand Staircase. Makes sense that it is, though.
A question I have (I don't know if anyone's thought about or mentioned) is I wonder if we'll be able to swim in the lake and see the merpeople, Grindilow's, giant squid and lake ruins like the film? It was so deep, especially in the books.
I'm going to guess no because I don't think they've shown any shots that are underwater. I feel like there used to be an old joke about video games that you have to wait for the sequel to a game to have swimming as a feature. If it isn't in the game, it's definitely something they could expand into if they make a sequel.
The Griffindor Room change might be, because the women in the pictures chooses different locations randomly (because they can walk thought frames) and maybe the room entrance just changes with that. The Hut changing could be explained because Hagrid just built a new hut and the old one got destroyed or smth... or there are just multiple of these huts around the castle xD
As much as i like it sticking to real source. I'm going to just imagine that hogwarts likes to change things up a little each year or few so I don't get peeved I mean, they probably have the magic to just move rooms and the structure around in just a few minutes
I like how the great hall is a hybrid of Philosopher’s Stone and Goblet of Fire (like an area reminiscent of the hall of reception) (Also has anyone ever noticed in the first film Percy leads the Gryffindors out of the Great Hall in the first film it’s on the left and in all the others it’s on the right?)
I’m curious to know if these design changes are more accurate to the books? It just doesn’t make sense to make significant changes to some of these areas.
I just noticed by comparing the Castle to older video games . This "new Area" with the garden and stuff in front of the castle. Those are later the training grounds where in the first movie they trained quiditsch
Comparing this hogwarts castle to the films is what's the problem. The films are definitely NOT the standard to go by in terms of authenticity and what not. First and foremost should always go by the books. The fact that they basically combined the castle between the book and film versions is a great medium that seems to have turned out quite well for both types of fans of the movies, or the books. In itself, it's a masterpiece
With the game being out we now know that Hagrid's hut isnt the Beasts class hut its actually slightly south of Hogwarts across the magical bridge and is labeled as the Caretaker's
The classrooms change location every year sometimes daily as needed by the teacher of a subject unless you're the apparition of one professor binns. Hogwarts also changes physically on a as needed basis and headmaster/headmistress's style to some degree
The Astronomy tower has a different position, kinda where the DADA Tower was in the earlier movies. The staircase leading to the boathouse also looks different.
That is not Hagrid's Hut. It's the Beasts Class. Hagrid's Hut is in the game on the other side of the castle (you need to leave the castle from the clock tower) and it's placement kinda resembles to the one from the 3rd movie forward
From what I recall the first and maybe 2nd game had a very similar greenhouse design from what we have seen but honestly I really like the changes, it feels nastolgic but with a fresh slate to discover new ways to experience life at hogwarts. I'd love to see the bathroom Fred and George used to sell their items in though.
I love how they've been able to include both Hagrid's Huts from the films, placing them in two separate locations, making them look different and giving them appropriate purposes. I really hope that when it comes to the new series that they use this castle. NO CHANGES! (Ok maybe a couple, like making the moving staircases their moving versions.
I guess you could say that with the years and events that take place in between the Hogwarts Legacy game and the movies, there bound to be changes to the castle. New things built and old unwanted structures torn down.
The Caretaker Hut is actually somewhere else in the game. It's aside from the Hill like in Prisoner and following. What you refer to the caretaker hut is actually a Teaching Hut for Magical Beasts.
It actually makes sense some parts of Hogwarts look different. The castle is magical, constantly changing and shifting, which it would have done over the 100's/1000 years it's been around, whether it be the teachers making those changes or the castle making it's own. I don't think the chamber of secrets will be in it though unless there's another heir of Slytherin and it contradicts the films and books if you could go there. It was only opened/Basilisk released the first time when voldemort was at school but not before that. I think the castle has some charms on it that work similar to the room of requirement.
changes to some areas can be explained by it has been over 100 years and renovations happen to buildings. But the general main buildings should be similar at least with just small visual changes from renovation.
I have a feeling that the grand staircase will be a mix of the tower and the rectangular shape that we've seen before because why would you have a moving staircase if it just rotates around you'd want more to it right?
i think the man in the cave is of Merlin since he is mentioned several times and you have merlin puzzles to do i dont think they would do the chamber since no one could find the chamber till harry and voldys time
Used to love walking around the Half Blood Prince game exploring the same castle I've watched in the films. Now we get Avalanche's take on the castle merging the books and films as well as their creativity!
I dont get some parts of the castle, for example the Ravenclaw common room. It's supposed to be in one tower but in the game it's in multiple towers and extremly huge. Where is that in the castle?
thank you for this video! i was very bothered how nobody else was talking about the changes to the greenhouses or the circular courtyard area haha! it’s good to know about all the other changes too!
Hagrids hut is where its at from movie three on. You cross the wooden bridge and go down the hill to the left and that is where its at. There is a scroll you can reveal outside of it that says its the grounds keepers hut and also has a little nod that there is just enough room for a very large person to live. The hut in this video you where talking about is just where there magical beasts class is.
ปีที่แล้ว
There are actually two Hagrid’s huts in the game. In both locations as per 2nd movie and later films
Cheers! Some people speculated it was originally the Ravenclaw tower but I think in the films that was never officially pinned down. Although it looks like it might be in the game now!
@@hogwartsexpert The Lookout Tower was my second guess as to where the Ravenclaw Common Room is, with Central Tower being number one. But judging how the windows look, Avalanche probably chose that tower instead.
the place that i didnt find is.. the long bridge.. where voldermort army come when they bring harry 'dead' body.. the small bridge where harry throw the elder wand.. where is that place in the game
I think films got it wrong not the game. For example those tables in the films are way too short. There is 1000 students and you barely fit 200 there. It should be wider like in game
Yeah the expansion of the common rooms and great hall makes sense for the realistic amount of space you'd need for all the students. Not saying the game got anything wrong btw, more just comparing where it's different to the films!
Well...these are not "changes done from the films". Don't forget that the time period for the game is well before the time period of the films. Rather, what was shown in the films were changes done to the castle after the time period of the game...they're not even happening in the same century, this video completely misses this important point.
I was definitely late to playing the game, but the environments are so amazing with their interpretations. Also love that Peeves made a return after not being included in the films. Lastly, Hagrid's hut is actually on the side of the hill near the water's edge (for anyone wondering). The building shown in the video is similar, but instead of being the caretaker's hut it is the beasts class area...
I loved the video. I generally don't like to watch videos with someone just talking but you're video was better and it was over before I realized it. You're super underrated man keep up the good work.
Some changes make sense. The movie and books take place in the 1990s while the game takes place in the 1890s. So same castle, slight changes that happened over a century.
I think it could be the chamber of secrets, it's just that the chamber of secrets appearance has changed drastically over the years to represent the (villain-perceived) fall of the pure blooded race of wizards, which is why Tom Riddle/Voldemort could've been using that as a base of operations in the future. That's why it was made in the first place, it represented the evil ambitions of Salazar Slytherin in his desire to rid the world of those he deemed inferior. Maybe a big battle between good and evil happens there at the end of the game, and through that event, a giant tree (or stone pillar?) erupts from the head of the statue. If you look on the film's version, they have close enough features that maybe it's not too hard to believe that the statue once looked like how it will in the game, but it has been twisted and disfiguring over time. This could give a whole new dimension to the Chamber of Secrets in the franchise as a whole. Maybe the chamber of secrets once had a tall, proud statue of Salazar Slytherin as a shrine to his "greatness". But over time, as more and more good was brought into the world, it slowly began to wither away and collapse, showing that good has continuously triumphed over evil. It's representing Salazar's spirit. Which is why in the Deathly Hallows, a wave of water appears and it has a face of some sort of spirit. Contextually, that can be seen as Voldemort's soul fragment. But in reality, it could be Salazar's spirit mourning over the fact that evil is now being bested once again, with Voldemort being the last evil and extremely powerful wizards in a long time.
Interesting video, but I think it would be more accurate to compare the visuals they have made to the books instead. They clearly didn't draw complete inspiration from the movies here. The movies are also quite flawed so I'm happy they didn't
It's also good to remember the game is set back further in time than the movies or even the Fantastic Beast movies. So Hogwarts could have easily have seen a few changes over time, such as the greenhouses being moved etc. At least that can help to explain the changes to the outside of the castle and the grounds.
Keep in mind that the game is set in the year 1890, and Harry Potter was played out in the years 1991-1998. Some interior changes may have been made during those 100 years :p
So is the second camera angle just a flex that you have two cameras? Because switching between the two without there being a real reason to seems weird.
Honestly if it’s not identical to the films, I’m okay with it. The game takes place like 100 years previous to the films. Things happen and it feels historic.
since hogwarts does have an everchanging layout canonically, all versions would be possible in the same universe, and the differences can be explained with that in universe, so tbh i'm fine with all of the differences mentioned
The Statue that you think kinda looks like salazar slytherin is NOT the Chamber of Secrets. The bathroom with the entrance is the same as in the movies. You can even find a note for it at the sink where harry opened the chamber :) and no you can't open the chamber or enter is any other way. It simply does not exist in the came apart from the bathroom
Didnt realize this was a video before the release. I like the moving stair cases in the game, and it's fits more inline with the books. Also the stairway in the defense against the darks arts classroom is slightly different in the game than the movies.

I'm with you OP. I always thought a lot of spaces were too small, especially the great hall it's barely big enough to accommodate the tables
THI!! in the movies it seems the common room was reserved for Harry and friends and the rest of gryffindor can go pound sand outside "you no chosen one plebs" :D
Speaking of the great hall… considering this part from the behind the scenes video I think it lost some length and there are less seats compared to the movie version th-cam.com/video/IIALvzgdXJE/w-d-xo.htmlm7s
Otherwise I have the impression that all parts of the castle have lost height 0:24 or do you think this is more because the areas have been expanded.
Thats a really great point actually
Most sets in the films were made just for harry's class and draco's class and not much more
Yup
@@SagaciousNihilist I can't seem to find that video. What's the name of it 👀
@@SagaciousNihilistactually I heard there isn’t 1000 students at Hogwarts.
@@SagaciousNihilist I thought the same about NPC pathing. It's the only logical reason for those arena-sized corridors.
The hut you described as "Care takers" is actually the Care of Magical Creatures class room.
The Grounds Keepers hut is a bit further beyond that area.
They moved the forbidden forest as welll
Yeah what will be hagrid’s is now passed the shoddy bridge on the south side.
The game takes place in 1890, so that could definitely explain the differences in the decorations as well as some of the missing towers.
Exactly my thoughts, too. This game takes place long enough in the past that it's easy for there to be a different layout. And you gotta remember that the school is over 1,000 YEARS old, so it's obviously gotta get patched up every now and then, just like buildings in the real world.
@@shionrasenka How easy it must be to do renovations when you can just flick your wand
Also remember that Dumbledore says Hogwarts is always changing on its own
They are very much marrying the mainstream version of Hogwarts from the films to various aspects from the book.
@@hogwartsexpert so you're not an expert in hogwarts architecture then lol
I do hope they can implement the changing staircases. I mean ons that were there and then go away, so you have to find a different way there.
Top tier architectural analysis! Really interesting, cheers
Except for Hagrids Hut. That one is just randomly placed not even near the forbidden forest. And why is the forbidden forest next to Hogsmead ?
Not to mention it’s based in like 1890
I wonder how someone can watch this video and think the main point is "the game isn't faithful to the movies". Like, did we watch the same video?
It's not just your headcanon. The books specifically mention the castle's 'every change floorplan'.
6:41 this is Beasts Class. Hagrids Hut, technically Caretakers Hut since Hagrid doesn't live there yet, is indeed in the location it's at from Prisoner of Azkaban and onwards.
7:02 That is not Hagrid's Hut technically that is the Magical Creatures class area. The caretaker's hut is out behind the castle in game.
I actually really like the direction they're going in. Just thought it would be fun to compare how it's different to the films!
Yep the prefect bathroom actually greatly reflects how it looks in the book. So not sure why they would call it inaccurate
he is comparing it to the movie
That would make a lot of sense! You should do an 'architecture major reacts', you'd be a lot more qualified than I am 😉
Alot of what i noticed with the game versus the movies, is that they said they did it mostly doing it by the book descriptions, and not the movie descriptions, but adding things that were like the films to a degree, but the developers talked about the books being the main focus here for recreation, and less on the movies.
it's great that they're being faithful to the books
4:08 It seems as though the common rooms have been based half on the movies, half on the Pottermore illustrations.
I mean, that's the name of the video lol.
the title is literally “is it the same castle from the films?”
he’s not going to be talking about the books.
@@hu3sto also I think I was wrong - the DADA classroom is probably curved - I a higher res pic where the floorboards suggest so
At 7:27 that isn't the grand staircase area. Those are staircases in the wing below the Ravenclaw common room that lead down to some of the underground portions of the castle.
Possible yeah! If that's the case though, it's still weird that they haven't shown a shot of the actual grand staircases.
@@hogwartsexpert maybe they’re doing some big with it that they don’t want to show yet 👀
Great video, thanks Ben!
2 points I'd want to add:
- the little conical roofs on the ends of the Clock Tower Courtyard were in the film version.
I just realized this as well, after many rewatching
I strongly agree.
5:13 what about the pillars and the overall hight of that balcony thing
I loved your video. I just want to mention the place you called as "Hagrid's hut" is actually the Care of Magical Creatures Class Hut. The groundkeeper one is going down south to Lower Hogsfield, passing throught the clock tower courtyard bridge :)
I believe that might be Ravenclaw tower at 1:35
I've never been sure where that is. I always thought it was at the back right corner of that square. You might be right though!
@@hogwartsexpert Yes it's always been a bit of a mystery on the exact location!
It’s a fusion between the books and films but there’s a certain degree of leeway with the fact it’s about a century earlier so some of the exterior walls or the moving staircases could be actually be magically re engineered. Especially the green houses and a few extra towers.
7:26 - Greetings. it is not the same location as the moving stairs
this is a new location that has not been shown in the movies before and can be found in the game HP Deathly Hallows
The tower you mentioned (1:34) is Ravenclaw Tower in the game.
@@hogwartsexpert why? The one circular hole we know about isbthe one from the entrance. There's no mention of a hole to climb the stairs
Agreed
I think that huge statue is of Merlin, who was also a Slytherin.
yes i have been watching alot of the experienced hogwarts gamers wander around the hogwarts legacy game and their first reaction is to say Merlin, as a Merlin statue , with the mythology of Merlin's beard
Myrtle's Bathroom Tower and Herbology Tower are completely gone, leaving the Viaduct Entrance with corners in the back
I'm actually disappointed by how much the castle looks like it does in the films. I was hoping they'd work completely from the books as the films changed so much it never felt like Hogwarts to me....even though I watched the first 3 films before reading the books
I agree.
Good point! Whereas the DADA classroom stays the same because noones ever in the job long enough to change it much 😂
Ah, you did it! Brilliant analysis as always!
I really like this version of Hogwarts. Super happy that they picked the Half-Blood Prince version to modify and not the one from Deathly Hallows with the stupid viaduct movement.
Thanks man! Yeah same here, I wasn't a fan of any of the changes made in deathly hallows.
@@hogwartsexpert ah right. Well, fingers crossed they make it happen in a sequel or even expansion 😁
No its because tgat is where she is located in the books.
As much as i like it sticking to real source. I'm going to just imagine that hogwarts likes to change things up a little each year or few so I don't get peeved
I mean, they probably have the magic to just move rooms and the structure around in just a few minutes
I like how the great hall is a hybrid of Philosopher’s Stone and Goblet of Fire (like an area reminiscent of the hall of reception)
(Also has anyone ever noticed in the first film Percy leads the Gryffindors out of the Great Hall in the first film it’s on the left and in all the others it’s on the right?)
I’m curious to know if these design changes are more accurate to the books? It just doesn’t make sense to make significant changes to some of these areas.
i don't thing thats hagrids hut... hagirds hut is more far away, because there's also a tombstone
Hagrid’s house is way down there, all those steps lead down from the wooden bridge…
I just noticed by comparing the Castle to older video games . This "new Area" with the garden and stuff in front of the castle. Those are later the training grounds where in the first movie they trained quiditsch
Yeah the new circular courtyard is taking up the space that was previously filled by some of the greenhouses and the quidditch training ground!
Agreed
That is the Ravenclaw Tower at 1:32
The tower at 1:34 might be the rawnclaw common room..
Hradrig's hut is actually downhill form the woden bridge. What you saw is the beast class hut
changes to some areas can be explained by it has been over 100 years and renovations happen to buildings.
There are actually two Hagrid’s huts in the game. In both locations as per 2nd movie and later films
The tower you couldn't identify that's around the Quad area is called "the lookout tower"
It's not trying to copy the movies. It's recreating the books, with inspiration from the movies.
the place that i didnt find is.. the long bridge.. where voldermort army come when they bring harry 'dead' body.. the small bridge where harry throw the elder wand.. where is that place in the game
Thanks, appreciate that!
I agree.
The whole thing with the two cameras, lighting, hogwarts expert title and blazer are a bit of a parody of Vanity Fair's expert reviews videos
@@hogwartsexpert i love it
@@hogwartsexpert That makes more sense. Sorry for not picking up on that.
Honestly if it’s not identical to the films, I’m okay with it. The game takes place like 100 years previous to the films. Things happen and it feels historic.
Which of these changes could be read as a pre-phase of the castle considering that the story is taking places many years prior to the films?
since hogwarts does have an everchanging layout canonically, all versions would be possible in the same universe, and the differences can be explained with that in universe, so tbh i'm fine with all of the differences mentioned
