John, as the son of Vietnam Veteran whose father told me Afghanistan was another Vietnam before he passed in ‘03. Thank You so much for speaking on what is real and not being full of shit about this stuff
Whats crazy is John was there on the front of these wars and I was on the back end of these wars, asking what are we doing here!?! Felt like the last days of Vietnam, Mosul 2011, Helmand 2017.
Nailed it. I worked in Af with NGOs from '11-'19...have to let go of a lot and be able to come to terms with reality...not many in the West can understand what it's like over there.
John is trying to tell you something here. It pains me to say this, but the participants are asking questions that are all so past tense. The questions they should be asking is about how to stand up an army for when the time comes.
That was a bit general, but If you’re referring to our own backyard…. Amen. The biggest fight of our lives is about to kick off right here in our own country, and there’s no clear plan on how to fight it.
If you read about how the Mongols, Romans, and Alexander the Great "conquered" other lands you realize what it takes to defeat tribal people. You either kill almost all of them or go around that patch of land. Another thing.....when the Roman Legions were smashing everyone some wealthy Kings paid some former Roman Generals to train their guys to be Roman soldiers. No matter how much $ they threw at the problem they never got Roman soldiers. You can train 350K Afghans but you can't buy / train competency. I love these videos!
Ok, I gotta say it. The Sheriff, drinking knob creek (a fine bourbon indeed) from a mason jar, with a big glow, not directly answering some of the questions he was asked but what a cool and profound interview. I could watch his stuff all day.

Shame on all the generals in charge of Afghanistan. They knew the training wasn’t going well yet they wanted to report back to the president and the Congress were winning hearts and minds when they absolutely knew that was not the case. But they were too c*********t to say this is a cluster and we need it fixed and this is how we need to fix it or we need to get the hell out. I’m ashamed at how management civilian and military managed Afghanistan.
Great start of programme point about the right way to 20 year rebuild a country with special op protection . When you rebuild the landscape / you rebuild the people . Rebuild the people you rebuild the society . Sadly was just a military industry complex public to private transfer of $ with us/nato forces getting a live practice area . Permaculture design system rebuilds these places - already proved . Ironic that this bottom up rebuild path is what communists used to do but now they just do the deal with the top elites ( like 19th century coloniser used to ) . Therefore it would have flipped out the Islamic world after 911 if we took away BinLaden alive / dead early on but then turned around and re built there society from the top soil up with SF protection . Thanks again JMc for flushing these topics out for free forum discussion . Peter from Oz
I don’t know what kind of guy John was back during this war…but, if I had to go into combat, I’d love to have this guy leading the charge. But, I digress…. He’s spot on with his assessment here.
The air power was the tanks of Afghanistan. I served in and all around Kunar and Nuristan for 15 months. Every one of the 16 seperate missions I went on we flew in other than 1 when we went to checkpoint delta outside of Bostick 2008. My squad built CP delta before we handed it over to the ANA. Story was Taliban threatened to attack so the afghans who we set up to fight them off supposedly just abandoned the base. That was my first heartbreak because of how hard I worked to build up that shit hole.
🙋♂️ now that Pentagon has made special provision to give Ukraine anything thereby saving them from Congressional overwatch, why couldn't Afghanistan pullout have been as supportive?
Firstly, thank you for your service. If I were you, I'd listen to interviews by Lieutenant General Sami Sadat, the final commander of the Afghan National Security Forces Commandos. He details how, following the 2020 Doha deal, US support was cut, offensive operations halted, and 7,500 high-risk prisoners were released under US pressure. These prisoners, responsible for much American blood, were freed, while Afghan forces' supplies and ammunition were cut off, effectively choking the army. The Afghan government was excluded from the Doha deal, and the US withdrew contractors maintaining Afghan supplies and aircraft, crippling their airpower. The harsh terrain made resupply nearly impossible, leading to a dire situation. The sacrifices of Afghan soldiers over 21 years should not be ignored. The Afghan National Army had no air support and was forced to retreat until they ran out of ammunition and medical evacuation options. Do you see where I’m going with this?
Basically the Taliban said, " it was real,& it was fun,bug it wasn't real fun. Thanks for hanging out. Wd ard going to go right back to how everything was 20 years ago."
I am just an average Joe but I believe Afghanistan should of been left to SF and JSOC to control. Once conventional military and politicians take over well you can guarantee absolute failure....
The Afghans may have lost every year but ultimately they won. The are now better armed and funded than they have ever been. Thats what hurts the most; it was all for nothing.
What worries me is there is a border state with a major metropolitan city and near that city is a nuclear power plant, a group of guys over power security and blow the place up with the explosives we left over there. Millions of people be in trouble.
It was never about “winning.” Just like Vietnam wasn’t about winning. It was about finding reasons to continue the conflict as long as possible to skim as much money off the war so Military Industrial Contracts can make billions for 20 years. Companies that received no bid multi million dollar contracts. Here’s on example; Halliburton provided almost all the resources to maintain food/hygene, safety, health, ect ect. I remember seeing the invoice on a few things. My eyes noticed the Govt was paying soda from neighboring countries 160.00 per can of Soda. War is about money. Always was, always will be. And, I have to say. 20 year, 20 Trillion dollar “GWOT” made ALOT of Military Industrial Companies ALOT OF MONEY (special thanks to Cheney). It was never about “winning.”
