Retired detective here with more critical. Incident investigations than I can remember. I recommend your 911 call be simple such as I had an intruder and need law enforcement and medical help. The reason for requesting medical help is that you don’t want anyone to be in a position of accusing you of withholding life-saving information. My initial statement would be very simple. “Someone broke into my house and I was afraid for my life” I would tell the investigator that I am securing an attorney before making any other statements. Your home will likely be held for a search warrant which means everyone will need to exit the home. Also, the weapon(s) you had to use should be seized until the investigation is complete. Lastly, the police do not “clear“ you that is done by the district attorney or county attorney. Each state/jurisdiction may handle some things differently, but this is what I would expect from my past experience as a detective, as well as my knowledge of my local judicial system. One more one last thing… No matter how much of a bad ass you are… “I was in fear for my life….” “I was scared…”

Advising people to not clear their own house during a break-in or suspected break-in is simple but absolutely Great advice. Because then you’re going from self defense to offense. Thanks
Another reason to be proud and loud about being an American, he changed my whole home defense strategy. I am an average husband with not military background and now need more training like his. Please share his details! Gracias
Great advice a few years ago 2 police helicopters were over my house with spotlights looking for a criminal. I had just installed lutron smart switches. I had to clear a 1/4 of the house to get wife and kids to a defensive position and then turned on every light inside and outside my house from my phone and except my dark position. I would highly recommend getting smart switches. Guy was caught 600 meters from my place.
I’ve heard John’s story on like 4 different podcasts and I still can’t wait for this episode to drop. Lol the guy absolutely cracks me up. He subscribes to “Only be super serious when it’s absolutely necessary” and I like that.
For home defense; there is a reason why emergency room doctors never treat "OO" buckshot wounds to a patients upper torso. There's no need to transport a deceased person to the hospital ER.
Thats my choice as well. It was a rifle for a while but after practicing with the 12g enough i feel comfortable itll do wat i need it to. Stay safe brother
So you’re saying never in the history of mankind has a doctor ever treated a person who was shot with 00? The doctor looks at the person who is alive and says nah I’m not gonna try to save him, just wheel his bed out to the street…
@@Dylan.More-Veiny Why is there always a pedantic f*** like you in every crowd? It's not that you don't understand exactly what he said in context, you just wanted to be that guy. Thank you for the defense training. One comment on the MAST Suit. I’m a vet but I’m also a retired career fire paramedic of 35 years. About 30 years ago, yes that long ago, they took away our MAST Suits. They determined that although it did exactly what it was designed and supposed to do by keeping blood in the torso, it accelerated bleeding out. By definition, shock is a lack of blood perfusion to the brain and vital organs, and in trauma by GSW, it’s hypovolemic shock. The MAST Suit treated shock as designed, but it was very short term and accelerated hypovolemia. Tourniquets and volume replacement with large bore high flow IV was the field treatment with rapid transport. I only had maybe a dozen GSW patients during my years, but in CE training we learned that most GSW bleeding out was from leg wounds and your combat tourniquet was the best piece of trauma gear you could have. Quick clotting combat gauze to pack a wound with also. Direct pressure still is your main go to BLS technique.
Thank you both! Awesome information. I've told friends for years do not use lasers and lights in your home. It's your home make them come get you. love listening to you guy give awesome useful information.

I used to listen to John when he had his podcast. The story of his solo mission was pure insanity. Good to hear from him again, this time in long format. This will be in Shawn's top 5 ever interviews for sure.
Great advice on early warning tech. My security cams made an attempted home invasion a lot less stressful. They were in view of my cams the entire time and I was armed and waiting.
Very rarely do I hear people mention the best option for home defense and that’s one or two big dogs. Most people will turn the other way if they hear a big dog barking. Also majority of big dogs won’t hesitate to protect their homes/owners.
I watched a Dateline type show one night many years ago about a few teenagers that murdered an entire family at night. Totally sporadic, they didn’t know the family. They said when they were walking down the street choosing the house they had picked one and as they approached they heard a dog going nuts and moved on to another home. Crazy how that dog saved that entire family.

First! Looking forward to different perspectives you’re able to provide and make available. Thanks Shawn.
You’re welcome!
@@ShawnRyanShowcan you bring Clint Emerson on the show
Another reason to be proud and loud about being an American, he changed my whole home defense strategy.
“You take them into the deep water and then you fucking rifle them all down in your bedroom” 😂
He also said upper torso to put emphasis in his figure of speech about how deadly such an encounter is. You made it sound like people shot in the foot.
You know damn well what he was saying. I can hear you smooshing your glasses up onto your face from here,... right before saying: "Ackshually..."
@@Dylan.More-Veiny I think that if you reread the comment, the intent is that doctors never treat them because they do not arrive alive.
So much gems from just this segment. Tactics, Angle & distance, lighting, contingencies from Shrek.
And he done it in Crocs and touch the muff Shirt😆
Thank you both! Awesome information. I've told friends for years do not use lasers and lights in your home. It's your home make them come get you. love listening to you guy give awesome useful information.
I know all my neighbors cars , families & pets…it’s good to know! We help each other & respect each other family’s boundaries too!🇺🇸👍🏻 it’s all good!😄
You're lucky. My neighbors are ALL busy body wingnuts with no respect for privacy or boundaries.
me too .., we know when someone’s not supposed to be in our neighborhood especially at odd hours
I've been waiting for awhile for someone good to interview this man. It's guys like this is why the government can't fully disarm America. They are scared of the regular citizens. They are terrified of men like these.
My team and I saw some D-Boys in Mosul around 2004 at the chow hall. Appears they were retirning from an op or something amd getting some chow woth cams on their weapons amd all...one was wearing a Ren and Stimpy tshirt, another a Boston Red Socks cap.
This clip is undoubtably the most useful information I have heard so far as it relatesvto home defense.
It's great to see that at least a few men made it out of a military career without destroying their character.
What do you mean by that?
John came close, he has stated that he hated everyone his last couple years before retirement…
Either way John is the Man…
@@robertfoster7623what don’t you understand?
Does seem like he’s a little nuts though lol (in a good way)
@@User-gd5un aren't we all?
I agree with him about not cleaning the house. A few years ago I took the Haley Strategic Castle Class and it changed my opinion about clearing the house. I now hard point as well.
Tier one operators are scary and awesome. I'm glad they're in the neighborhoods and not looking for a fight. You honestly want guys like this next door. And you want to be a good neighbor for them.
Top-notch.
Hell yea
they’re usually nice but full of “quiet” confidence
I had the opportunity to take a carbine class with John 2 years back near Florida city. If he is as on point on your interview segment as he was here, we are in for a treat. He is a definite mental chess player and has such common sense feeling answers to questions. Thanks or having him on your show
Shrek was the mega legend in Baghdad! So happy you’ve got him on the show!
I used to listen to John when he had his podcast. The story of his solo mission was pure insanity.
Good to hear from him again, this time in long format. This will be in Shawn's top 5 ever interviews for sure.
Not many guys can pull off crocs, a muff tshirt, and bifocals and still come off like a badass.
I mean it’s 2 for the price of 1 . They are the alarm and the first line of defense. How do you not take advantage of a Fur Missile.
I got a pitbull. Theres been a few instances where my wife/kids came home n i heard em before he did. I didnt get him to be a guard dog tho. I dont need a 80lb liability runnin around. He does bark at a knock n stuff like that but he deff isnt my end all be all for home security.
@@FirstLast-ff7qx but if he can intercept an intruder for 30sec that 30 extra seconds you have to get your bearings if your asleep. That’s the way I have always looked at it anyway.
@@brockbusa21 i agree. Way better than no dog. I just dont like when people half way train their dogs to be guard dogs n they end up biting a kid. Not saying he does that or anything. My comment was totally ancedotal
I would love to have that guy as a neighbor, very interesting on what he had to say on home defense measures, I learned quite a bit in that short segment😊
Maybe you would. Maybe you wouldn't.
Maybe he likes loud parties at 3am and his SF buddies are parking their cars on your lawn because wtf are you gonna do about it?
Shrek is a fucking legend. The amount of knowledge he drops in every sentence is ridiculous.
Made me feel better because my system is this. And I've got electric fence cameras 3 big dogs. Thanks Shawn and John 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🙏
"i had to put a tourniquet on a baby once". Damn.
Exactly what I said out loud to myself. And then to hear him say it was the worst day of his life and that he wasn't ready to talk about just goes to show that as casual as he is about his experience, he has scars just like most who have served at his level. He never does talk about that day in his full length interview. Damn.
brilliant..grateful for folks with training and experience paying it forward to improve the lives of our citizenry; solid interview questions, delivery, and timing..exceptionally well done young man
Love listening to John and his perspective on things.
Looking forward to this Episode!
*Thank you Shawn Ryan!* 🦅🇺🇸🦅
Hello Shawn
My dad is a United States marine that served years 2003-2008 in fallujah . He isn’t a regular marine he was born and raised in Iraq . He was a translator and he risked his life and his families to fight against terrorist threats. He has stories from the Iraqi civilian and marine pov that no one has heard . He grew up during sadams ruling and has so many facts that not alot of people know . I would love for him to come on the show . Thank you sir 🙌 always a great watch
Great idea! I'd watch that!
Sorry man
G48 is a 43x with a longer slide and barrel.
Same size as a 19 but single stack makes it much more slim. Shield arms and PSA both sell metal mags that hold 15 rounds.
Got a couple of PSA micro dagger mags for my Glock 48. They work great.
The p365 x macro has surpassed glock in the compact market. Noone else offers a compact 17+1

Love you shawn and co and John McPhee. Thank you for your continued service, candor, and educations.
The knowledge this man shares is so dam important especially right now ! Take fuckin notes boys
Col Jeff Cooper (Gunsite Founder) taught basically the same thing. Check out the "Sconce". The fortified home. Excellent presentation and thank you.
He is spot on with the 911 calling. They are now trained to keep the caller on the phone and go over a list of prepared incident questions that would drive any sane person to aggravation in a calm situation.
Okay, I've seen every SRS episode, and there have been a bunch I've been psyched for, but I'm 7 minutes into this preview, and I can't wait for the episode.

Heckyeah! The Sheriff's in town baby! Super exited for this one.
I believe i heard someone say something about Mr. McPhee, in refence to keep behind glass and break in case of war. After hearing him speak for less then 5 min i totally understand that statement. Seems like a super down to earth no bullshit guy. Can't wait for the full interview.
Absolutely agree with not calling law enforcement.
Only call them after you have gained control of the situation
If you can call without compromising a tactical advantage, do so. That way if you go down, at least your family has help coming and aren’t left for the depraved wolves.

The floor plan of my condo is so perfect. My wife has the 12g, I have a rifle. Kids room is just across the hall at the top of the stairs. So the stairwell is exactly where we will be stacking any intruders.
I'm also a home builder, so I have started taking home defense into consideration with our designs. My newest design has a perfect "perch" for any buyer who wants to safely defend their home.
Love his point about defensive position in the home. I always thought trying to clear your house not the best strategy.
It just occurred to me how similar special forces guys are to elite NFL quarterbacks. Both require the ability to quickly process situations, make wise decisions under duress, and be physically gifted.
Good advice on home defense and security. A lot of his ideas are already in my plan so anything new is great. Thanks
