The "look me straight in the eyes" and "look myself in the eyes" sung at the same time gets me. Knowing this is there last album, I can only assume they knew it was over now while performing this.
The harmony between these two guys was always insane to me. Over Now & Heaven Beside You, with beautifully, subtle harmonies touch my soul deeply. I've watched this MTV Unplugged episode featuring Alice in Chains 1000+ times over the years & never tire of it. WTH happened to MTV? Creating "Unplugged" featuring awesome bands like Nirvana & Alice in Chains, who'd come on & play stripped down versions of their songs, surrounded by candles, in front of an intimate audience was the best idea ever. I always wanted to be in that audience. Now MTV airs braindead episodes of Ridiculousness & Teen Mom. Damn that sucks.
I remember my mom playing this song when I recovered from my appendicitis. When it was over, she played it for me. That was over 23 years ago. RIP Mom.
I love how in almost all the songs there performing Layne always halfway turns to Jerry but never looks directly at them like their communicating in some mysterious way
24 years after watching this for the first time and I still cry watching this. It’s so obvious that Jerry was thrilled to be sharing the stage again with Layne but deep inside he knew his friend was going to leave him in a matter of time..
Speaking from personal experience, you can love someone with all of your being but that love will never be enough if they have no will to change. This whole set gets to me because I see the father of my children in Layne. They look pretty similar. That hallow look of pain. I think drug addiction is sometimes just a prolonged suicide. They want to die but don't want to pull the trigger. They cover the pain with drugs until the drugs physically take them. And for those of us that have loved an addict, sometimes the only thing you can do it to leave them to do what they have their heart set on doing. It's sad but you can't fix someone if they don't want to change. My ex lost his battle last year and left 3 small kids behind. Drugs are just horrible. I can't fault people for needing a way out though.

Layne did an absolutely amazing job even if he fumbled with sludge factory, he absolutely gave an amazing performance nonetheless. His vocals on sludge factory were still better than 99.9% of singers out there and The Rooster MTV unplugged is one of my favourite live performances

yea the tune is so precise and riff-based. if he didn't keep that rock solid, it wouldn't work
They're all tuned in man, each part of this entire set is spot on
@@BloodlineMedia No need to be a dick about it...
@@BloodlineMedia definitely not, amazing drummer and performer one of the most underrated drummers ever but Jerry is what makes AIC, always has an always will be. Sean is a legend tho and I’m super glad he’s still around healthy and making and performing good shit with Jerry/mike/Will. Very sad that Paine is gone but at least Jerry and Sean the 2 founders of the band are still around
Layne and Jerry together were something really special.
the acoustic at the end of this song is incredible
That’s called a diminished 13 chord lol one of my favorite chords
Its perfect, haunting and ending things at the same time
One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. I love it, I've always gotta play it and rewind it a few times, it's gorgeous. Haunting..
Unbelievable how good this is. The torment in Layne the overbearing dad looks from Jerry. Kinneys drumming. Even accompanied artist friend Scotty. Mike's bass lines. Just hits me so deeply. It's soo good. The feeling in this song is remarkable!
This comment is deep
The ending of this just freight-trains me , never heard a sadder or more lonely end of a song. I'm from Seattle, I get it.
Jerry looked at Layne alot like he was concerned about him this whole show.
@@cindisims5917 It was mixtures of "are you good, bro?" and "damn he's nailing this" the entire time. Like there was no in between.
what I like the most about this version is how it led me to a deeper appreciation of Mike Inez's bass line
Inez was & is a perfect fit for this band
He's really amazing! Starr was amazing too in his own way but most comments make it seem like Inez was a terrible replacement.
I love Mike Inez' work.
@@danegonzales5651 which is just hilarious, Starr was a great and a really good fit in the band but IMO Inez is clearly a more talented player and definitely a more talented writer. Both are awesome tho but I think Inez was actually an upgrade
Oh my God , with real headphones on it's the best I've ever heard, so clean and smooth
AIC = Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
They're not done being great yet.
@@DrEvil-nx3xx Their Moore theater performance alone is enough to put them in hall of fame.
Fuck Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! AIC Is above that shit! \m/
Vinyl Diary666 lmao above being recognized in the industry as legitimate act and legends? Sure buddy.
drummerkidkill they are already recognized as such by the ones that matter, the people.
This band is a revelation. Full of beauty, passion, darkness, and pain.
I love right when Layne jumps in you can just tell Jerry turns it up a notch vocally...these two feed off one another and make each other that much better. Amazing duo.
The little giggle at the start gives me so much joy🥰
aha he's dead
@@Instigator554 I wish it was u instead of layne honestly
How does this barely have any views??? Such an underrated song
just give it some time, it will have heaps of views soon.
Another channel uploaded this same video which has 1.5M views, so probably, that’s what TH-cam recommends
We miss you Layne. He'll never replace you no matter how much money he rakes in off the name AIC.
Just an update: TH-cam deleted the other video. That means more views on this one by AIC!
EXACTLY WHAT I THOUGHT AS WELL XD !!! For real though !
This crowd is so fuckin lucky to even see this live..
The "look me straight in the eyes" and "look myself in the eyes" sung at the same time gets me. Knowing this is there last album, I can only assume they knew it was over now while performing this.
😮 what in the hell….???😮 never ever noticed that before
The harmony between these two guys was always insane to me.
God what I would give to have been at this show in person
Balisongs for Breakfast yeah, we should’ve been there instead of Metallica
I t was on MTV Unplugged LIVE! Then MTV was worth something.
Look at the Great White Unplug

I remember my mom playing this song when I recovered from my appendicitis. When it was over, she played it for me. That was over 23 years ago. RIP Mom.
Your mom sounds awesome!

One of the best bands of all time. I don't care what anybody says.
I miss the 90's like hippies miss the 60's
✌️☮️💟
Be glad you got to experience it :) I'd much rather be old now with those memories than young living in this crap generation haha.
well all the 60s music including sabbath and zeppelin in late 60s led to there being a 90s rock era so its like full circle
We need more music like AIC, right?
This song gives me goosebumps every single time. No other song does that.
I love how in almost all the songs there performing Layne always halfway turns to Jerry but never looks directly at them like their communicating in some mysterious way
They were truly soulmates
I think that’s just him reading the lyrics.
keep in mind how high Layne was and how very sick Jerry was and that just adds to this performance
Deep!
Layne always looking halfway to Jerry in a lot of tensioned songs. I think they just both knew ...
24 years after watching this for the first time and I still cry watching this. It’s so obvious that Jerry was thrilled to be sharing the stage again with Layne but deep inside he knew his friend was going to leave him in a matter of time..
So tragic 😞😞😞
@Jerry Cantrell oh how I wish this was the real Jerry Cantrell 🤥😞
I could listen to "we pay our debt sometime" for days and I wouldn't get tired of it. Such an epic breakdown.
How Layne made it through this performance is amazing lol. RIP Layne.
The bass line is so key in this song and how does Cantrell write music like that, incredible
And he doesn't even read music. He is self-taught & just knows things. It's mind-boggling to me how he does it.
:( ... it's really meaningful that you shared your story here under this song .. may he rest in peace, I hope everything is ok! much love
My exec died like that but I'm still here at 59 almost 60 oded 13 times thankgod I woke up
im so veru sorry to hear that its so sad ive been through same addiction worst part if you manage to get away from it long enouph you realise you depression suicide all those things go away if you just stop sounds simple i stopped a hundred times hope this is the last
So sorry for ur loss and yes agree it's slow death for sure so sad lost lot of good people in that world!
dena glass so true
by far, Jerry's best vocal performance!!
I will literally replay this over and over just to hear that small laugh in the beginning...
Shannon Marie me too😰❤️
Me too!!
Sounds like something from zelda haha
Layne looks like a god, sitting there closing his eyes and singing, the crowd were so fucking lucky
You better get off that shit if you are still alive man, Layne looked em alike what he was, a Walking Corpse.
this is such a dark and hard time for them all, i dont know how they held there composure for this at the time but you guys are the best band, thank you for all the music and footage
One of my favorite AIC songs.... but still l today wonder how were this talented
....... passion had to be😊
This was the best performance of the whole set. Not necessarily my favorite song of the set but the performance itself is so tight. Pitch-perfect vocals from Layne and Jerry
It's a dying man giving his last hurrah to the world, and everyone there knows itzthat's what gives it that inexplicable edge
@@MrEerieEyes did Mad season after this ..
@@saabvanderlinden9214 no. mad season is from 1994 and 1995. this unplugged is from 1996. after this they made a couple of live concerts in US opening for Kiss. but soon they droped out due to some health issues..........
Yes
One of AIC's best songs for sure.
I have the utmost respect for Cantrell, he had to carry this and many tracks with Layne in such rough shape(Sludge Factory)on this set all while apparently having food poisoning, he is an absolute legend for what he had done in performing this and other songs with his playing and solid vocal, just a great show
Layne did an absolutely amazing job even if he fumbled with sludge factory, he absolutely gave an amazing performance nonetheless. His vocals on sludge factory were still better than 99.9% of singers out there and The Rooster MTV unplugged is one of my favourite live performances
What a loss, Staley had such a good heart.
so many llead singers are arrogant ..me,me,me then theres Layne who convinced Jerry to start singing and share vocals with him... Kinda tells you the person he was. What a dynamic singer. Jerry and Layne were made to sing together!!!
They are tattoo brothers too, i love that their skulls tattoos are always looking at each other when they are on stage
And never again will there be another duet like Layne and Jeri
Been feeling depressed like always around this time and his song always helps. The last brilliant minute speaks to my soul as a therapeutic somber reflective catharsis I can’t quite describe. It’s a sonic piece of beauty.
I feel that, man been doing the same for years
Right on!! My favorite unplugged session in that MTV series!
completely agree the ending and outtro to this piece is something else..its the best part of the song tbh
yet you described it beautifully
It's a phase. It will pass and you'll be better. Just hold on.
"We pay our debt sometime"Ain't that the FUCKN TRUTH!
🙌🏽
All those candles... and Layne slowly fading. Like he is in another dimension. Still puts down an amazing performance with the rest of the band
Oddly enough i heard it was Layne’s idea to put the candles
Jerry’s guitar at the end is like a watch tic tac, running out of time. So sad, Such a beautiful piece of music and art creation.
makes me wanna cry remebering this badasss song!!!
LYRICS
Yeah, it's over now
But I can breathe somehow
When it's all worn out
I'd rather go without
You know its been on my mind, could you stand right here look me straight in the eye and say that it's over now
We pay our debts on time
Well it's over now
Yet I can see somehow
When it's all gone wrong
It's hard to be so strong

Tommy Goode Cool.. I'll fix that. Thank you!!
Yeah, definitely sometime. You can see Cantrell's mouth close while singing that line. If he said "on time" he wouldn't close his mouth to make the "m" sound.

To this day I still get goosebumps...this song touches deep for me
Sin duda que esto sí era música no como lo envasado de hoy larga vida a Alice in chains
Same for when I first heard it in 1996.
Simply put, is this one of the greatest guitar instrumentals of all time??
Yes.
I love this acoustic…. Great vocals….
I get choked up every time I watch this performance.
The shots of Jerry and Layne singing together at this show are so beautiful .. A pair like no other
I’m rocking back in forth like my Grandma did in church watching this. This gives me chills every time. 🙌🏽
They seem to be born to perform together
AIC unplugged performance was so good that some of their songs are almost “hypnotic”…just so unbelievably great!
Check out Layne in Mad Season it is epic
listening to this song for years without really noticing what great job Sean did - this guy is awesome!
The drumming is just fn solid.

Most haunting grunge song ever.
One of the most underrated bands of the 90s. These guys definitely influenced me as a musician.
One of my favorite guitar solos. Melodic, eerie and awesome.
Every decade has its greatest.. this is arguably one of them during their times.
their bluesiest song, Jerry really shines on both the guitar and the vocal. Layne's ability to harmonize is incredible, especially considering he never even looks at Jerry or the drums, he just feels it and nails it, every time.
Sorry i just cant say enough about this show. To be in that crowd would have been amazing.
That would have been an awesome show!!
This song never gets old ! Unplugged is amazing, and Layne & Jerry make this one of my all time faves,,, what a duo👏👏❣️
I just broke up with my first girlfriend of two years. If there is a god he lives in music, and this song feels like salvation right now.
There is a God! He will help you heal your heart and soul. Hang in there, kiddo! Peace and love!
music is predicated on sexual behavior.. call and response. there is a God and he doesn't want to rape your ears, years and maim you with witchcraft.. which is what music is. all of it.

Jerry Cantrell is such an underrated singer. He's also a very talented guitarist & songwriter. This song is very heartfelt & he knew his friend Layne's drug addiction was at an all-time low & it probably wouldn't be a very long time till he lost his friend
Yea,Kurt and the Meat Puppets, didn't do well! BS,!
This song and this performance will never not hurt.
@Jacob Hendry what do u mean?
Impossible to not smile when I hear that laugh at the start. And still, this song is heartbreaking 💔
Looove Cantrell! If I could have anything, well besides a Porsche and a horse lol.. it would be to sit down and sing and play a little guitar with Jerry.
Melanie C What brand of guitar is he playing on this song? Any idea?
Steve Gosper A beautiful Guild! Now what do I win lol..♡
I think Jerry likes horses too. So, bonus!
Swati B Huge bonus!! ♡
A horse and a Porsche lol it even rhymes ;)
2:40 you hear the fullness of all the instruments and music really coming together. Wish I was able to see them live
Alice in Chains is part of my teenage years. I first heard them in GTA San Andreas, the song was Them Bones. I'm just thankful for the findings I had in this game, not only them but also Soundgarden and STP. I always felt a different atmosphere, the kind that always made me interested in these bands. Their lyrics touch me, Layne and Chris specially.

They played and sang together beautifully. Some of the best harmony ever. You can feel the emotion in this song and performance.
