One of the best ever! I love how around 3:05 Layne wants to "reach" and Jerry wants to "Run" from something strong, and they harmonize so well they cover it so good that you barely notice until the 20th playback. Mistakes spun into greatness.
It's so amazing watching Layne so effortlessly sing what other singers really struggle go be able to achieve. He is hands down the best singer ever and such a great loss.
3:06 Despite how unsure Layne sounds with the word "reach", Jerry was actually the one who got the lyrics wrong. It's "reach for something strong". Jerry actually realizes and says "for" instead of "from" for the second word while Layne says "from" because he still thinks he messed up. So Layne sings "ream from" and Jerry sings "run for". I am overanalyzing, but these guys must have had nerves of steel to slip up like this and continue sounding awesome.
Scotty's picking, especially around the 3:44 mark, is awesome. I figured he doesn't get much recognition as a rented band member so I wanted to mention that his talent Level is amazing.
The only way I would wish he was here is if he got clean. To see him like this is fucking rough. Edit: I didn't mean for this comment to come out as shitty as it looks. Of course I would take Layne back anyday, but I would rather he enjoyed living as well without all the pain and suffering.
Unplugged never got better than this. Everything adds up, nothing of Chains' raw footage gets lost without the plugged distortion. Melodically outstanding, such a wonderfull vibe. IMO the pinnacle of grunge music.
I grew up listening to AIC but didn’t appreciate their sound and talent until now as an adult and as a father feel so much compassion for Staley’s situation and yet they continued to create master piece after master piece songs through trials and tribulations. This unplugged concert is historic.
The duality of their voices is just straight up pleasant to the soul's ear. The two polar harmonize a hauntingly and darkly beautiful effect. You don't even have to enjoy this type of music but cannot deny auditory bliss these two echo through the mic. I am sure many a 90's kids mom's were like, "those two have such wonderful voices...why do they have so scary and dark?" Lol
You are spot on with you comment. I just discovered AIC (ya it's October 2023 and I am 67). I am fascinated, captivated, mesmerized with the harmonies and heart broken for Layne and Mike. Oh what I missed out on.
My all time favourite Unplugged performance. The way Layne flips his vocals from clean to overdrive so effortlessly is something you cannot teach. It’s just an amazing display of natural talent that we’ll never see again

Staley is simply one of rocks great singers, there’s been better singers than him but he sounds like no one else. It cuts right thorough you and grabs the emotions. Much missed
@@markriley232There were some outliers, but there is something raw about Staley's voice that keeps me coming back. Like Kurt Cobain, but actually really good instead of tolerable.
Absolutely love the harmonizing between Jerry, and Layne. It's easy to see why he wanted Layne in the group. It's just a once in a lifetime kind of pairing those two.
So sad to see Layne in the condition he was in during the taping of "Unplugged". This guy was one of the greatest voices of Seattle. He is very much missed.
Can you believe that we live on a planet that gave us Layne? God I miss you man. 💔 Thank you A. I. C. for still providing us comfort when we need it most. My most eternal gratitude for carrying me through difficult times. Love you guys.
Most of the Unplugged is better then the studio versions. They had a sort of effect they put on alot of their songs that I didn't think complemented them. Idk why they did it. I think AIC would have been even bigger if they recorded like this. And I don't mean just acoustic
Eh...I mostly agree that they are better here. "Would?" is definitely better on "Dirt", though. That's one of the greatest and most powerful rock songs of the 1990's. Not to say it isn't good here. It's still really good. But it loses its raw power here.
The level of talent on this stage is just insane. Will another band on this level ever exist again given the state of rock and way the industry is now? I don't think so. Alice in Chains coming together was like lightening striking the tip of a needle, they were a gift from the universe to all of us. This whole set was near perfect.....not many bands could pull this off. I put this right up there with Queen's live-aid performance on the all time great live performance list.
Also, I don't think such a musical revolution that comes from a specific geographical location will ever happen again, so much good music all from Seattle area, so much good music, I didn't think music would ever suck so bad like it does today, so lucky to have lived through the 80sand90s,so much good music, and MTV was actually Kool and showed videos, today, MTV is pure garbage, like most of today's music, thank God for foo fighters, one of the few good bands now, experiencing this whole Seattle music scene was so fucking awesome, I'm sure nothing like this will ever happen again, so many badass bands from one geographical location.
Man I love this performance. Best one of the unplugged imo. Breaks my heart how grey Layne looks here, and how Jerry is obviously checking on him throughout the concert.
Sitting here watching I remember my friend, he died on his way to my place. We had tickets to go see AIC that night. Those tickets will never leave my frig.
Just fucking amazing. The harmony these two made together is untouched. Laynes talent was off the chart during the duets. I hope everyone hears this set the way I do. Fucking Incredible

Best performance of Laynes life. He had 1 concert after this and it was amazing also. I struggled with the same substance my whole life and I don’t know of anyone else that could do this while strung out. Amazing
nope, they played an entire tour after this in 1996 opening for Kiss, at least 6 shows? something like that? but i get what you mean, however some drug addicts can play well drugged up.
Most things are actually easier on that particular helper, at least up to a point - and then yes, returns diminish … but there’s a reason people do these things: to quote, I think it was Mitch Hedberg? “Not all drugs are good … some of them are great!” Your fingers feel more limber, your vocal cords loosen up, you’re flexible and disinhibited, after years of gray instead it feels like all the color and sound and flavor have returned to the world, your cares are gone, old grudges disappear, the world is in tune … if you can stay awake, it’s great, and even sleep is better. But like I said, it can have diminishing returns: high cost, dealers suddenly disappearing on you for weeks or trying to make an extra buck my mixing your shit with something stupid or insoluble like baby powder, cops fucking with you just to fuck with you or to meet some quota even though they don’t really give a shit and they’re all on steroids or worse themselves … even if you have the money, it gets messy and unpleasant as time goes on. But it’s still all worth it: again, if it sucked, people wouldn’t do it; the sad reality is, it’s fucking great - it’s just everything around it which sucks, and of course because it’s an unmonitored black market substance you never know what you’re getting, and that can mess up your health in an instant too.
If an oreo could sing... soft and sweet in the middle, with the crunchy cookie surrounding all!!! The vocal harmony in this song is insane. I miss you 90's

From what I've heard and read, he was pretty bad. Still, I respect the man for basically forcing himself to be there and give such a great performance.
Never can get over how far from the mic Layne keeps his voice. It's so damn powerful. Just pure god given ability that he has mastered with hard work and knowing his voice and sound so well to know little tricks like that. Laynes voice is usually struggling on most songs this is one of the few where he shines
INSANE!!! 2 different voices yet totally the same in harmony and they created a freaking masterpiece!!!!! WOW mad props
Isn't it?..Just amazes me. Very different voices but somehow they merge beautifully.
We will never get the privilege of experiencing anything close to this performance ever again. No auto tune. No computers. Just raw talent.

Layne's Voice🤘🤘🤘
Layne... Father
What a voice! R.I.P. Layne.
And Cantrell's voice too! Awsome!
.
Jerry and Layne. . . Couldn't find a better duo. Very similar vocal sound and the harmonies are just WOW X X
sean holding it down...mike with the metallica snarks...layne in pink...jerry looking like an angel...gotta love it
One of the best ever! I love how around 3:05 Layne wants to "reach" and Jerry wants to "Run" from something strong, and they harmonize so well they cover it so good that you barely notice until the 20th playback. Mistakes spun into greatness.
It's great how their both in the shot when this happens
What was the mistake? It sounds perfect to me
@@TheStepmonkey one said reach and the other said run. No biggie.
Fhkin awesome 👌
It was Jerry messing up his own lyric, oddly.
It's so amazing watching Layne so effortlessly sing what other singers really struggle go be able to achieve. He is hands down the best singer ever and such a great loss.
At a bad time in his life also!!! He was the man
Yeah
And at bad health at that
Exactly, he was the best💗
Laynes high harmonies here are pristine. Perfect, gritty, tenor. We lost a vocal genius.
The vocals on this one are amazing
Was reading this as he was playing it 🤣 2:25 was awesome too
Wish he was still here.
We all do.

@@92seattleaic83 I'm a sister, but yes :)
If we only knew in the 90s that we were experiencing the last gasp of rock ‘n’ roll, I think we would’ve savored the moment a little more.
I grew up listening to AIC but didn’t appreciate their sound and talent until now as an adult and as a father feel so much compassion for Staley’s situation and yet they continued to create master piece after master piece songs through trials and tribulations. This unplugged concert is historic.
Buy Far the Best unplugged to this day and more!!!
Aren't they incredible together? I miss Layne. Really glad Jerry is still with us!
You are spot on with you comment. I just discovered AIC (ya it's October 2023 and I am 67). I am fascinated, captivated, mesmerized with the harmonies and heart broken for Layne and Mike. Oh what I missed out on.
Unreal!!! 😔😔💔

My all time favourite Unplugged performance. The way Layne flips his vocals from clean to overdrive so effortlessly is something you cannot teach. It’s just an amazing display of natural talent that we’ll never see again

Best unplugged album MTV has ever had. ill argue with anyone... This band saved my life probably more than once.
Kurt Cobain where did you sleep last night is special but overall this is better.
Me too!!!!
Never started listening to Alice and chains until a couple years ago and now I must say they’re probably my favorite band of all time. Their music will never die friends.
Never my friend.

Staley is simply one of rocks great singers, there’s been better singers than him but he sounds like no one else. It cuts right thorough you and grabs the emotions. Much missed
When he was at his least drug addled he's easily the best rock singer ever. Even here he sounds amazing even if he is extremely dopesick.
I think he was probably the best…
@@markriley232There were some outliers, but there is something raw about Staley's voice that keeps me coming back. Like Kurt Cobain, but actually really good instead of tolerable.
💯 more so this unplugged than studio versions
Absolutely love the harmonizing between Jerry, and Layne. It's easy to see why he wanted Layne in the group. It's just a once in a lifetime kind of pairing those two.
So sad to see Layne in the condition he was in during the taping of "Unplugged".
This guy was one of the greatest voices of Seattle.
He is very much missed.
A lot of Alice fans deny how bad shape Layne was in by 94”. He was not delivering a lot of the time and he didn’t give a ****
Can you believe that we live on a planet that gave us Layne?
God I miss you man. 💔
Thank you A. I. C. for still providing us comfort when we need it most.
My most eternal gratitude for carrying me through difficult times.
Love you guys.
clashing vocals is what made it raw, hearing the lead singers voice at its purest, vocal ranges we cant do anymore xD
Rest in Peace Layne, it's now 2019, 17 years later and I will forever play your body of work.
Love this version, much better than the studio one
Love all these songs better than the studio ones.
Most of the Unplugged is better then the studio versions. They had a sort of effect they put on alot of their songs that I didn't think complemented them. Idk why they did it. I think AIC would have been even bigger if they recorded like this. And I don't mean just acoustic
All songs are better than the studio version.
The second guitar makes this version better
Eh...I mostly agree that they are better here. "Would?" is definitely better on "Dirt", though. That's one of the greatest and most powerful rock songs of the 1990's. Not to say it isn't good here. It's still really good. But it loses its raw power here.
I'm glad I lived in an age where a band like this could blow up as much as they did.
amazing that chrono trigger and this came out within a year of each other. i skipped school just to play that game
@@TheWitnessBeat Hell yeah! Can't get those days back but I'm glad we had them.
Layne an Jerry singing together is like what a happy marriage of two soulmates should be and is
wtf
I would’ve paid anything to be in attendance of this phenomenal show...

0:50 Layne chacking the lyric sheet for either the word "reach" or "run".

Just fucking amazing. The harmony these two made together is untouched. Laynes talent was off the chart during the duets. I hope everyone hears this set the way I do. Fucking Incredible
Layne's voice at 2:16 .....chills
best unplugged ever. You can find everything in this show: great songs, sadness, true performance no fx, some light, friendship...and that sad feeling that this was going to be a farewell from Layne
it took a few years to get him to do this - and this was basically it - he really was not active after this performance
I wish I could just reach through the screen and give Layne a big hug and tell him it will be OK 😔

Same here. I wish that he was still alive 😪
But it wasn't ok... 😢

This was the last generation of truly inspiring and great music! The garbage coming out these days doesn’t hold a candle to any of the early-mid 90’s.
Only bands around today worth anything are the ones carrying over from the 90s. The 90s was an amazing decade for music and truly is the last for good ol blues based rock n roll. I hope she makes a come back again! Saw AIC 3 years ago, and Tool in Jan 2020. Modern music makes me cry

Keep coming back - it’s massive
If an oreo could sing... soft and sweet in the middle, with the crunchy cookie surrounding all!!! The vocal harmony in this song is insane. I miss you 90's
it's so sad though you can hear the pain in his music. you know how much courage It took for him to do the MTV unplugged. I just cried every song looking at the pain in his face and body
Brandi Sparks_Hendrix I agree. You can see Layne’s shyness and anxiety but he killed it!!! RIP 😰❤️
It is true.
Yeah, he's hurting, sad af
Hard to watch for sure.
He didnt realize how great he truly was. His face has the same torture if not worse than Cobain. So heartbreaking watching this unplugged, especially knowing the circumstances he died in. Knowing he died alone and suffering mentally is heartbreaking

It’s good to see Layne come to life a little bit on this one. Head bobbing and what not. I can’t imagine how he felt this night. It’s clear he was fked up most of the night but still had that incredible talent come out on que every time. Best performance IMO.
From what I've heard and read, he was pretty bad. Still, I respect the man for basically forcing himself to be there and give such a great performance.
I'll never get tired of their voices. Incredible harmonies.
Layne's sense of music is absolutely amazing
I know Nirvana gets all the kudos but sorry AIC’s unplugged, the best.
A lot of the Unplugged shows were great but this one is easily my favorite.

Never can get over how far from the mic Layne keeps his voice. It's so damn powerful. Just pure god given ability that he has mastered with hard work and knowing his voice and sound so well to know little tricks like that.
