@@j.c7719 do you just use words without thinking about them? It’s not superior. Laynes voice had deteriorated by this point and the band is shambolic and sloppy.
A heroin addict knowing he's in too deep and his fate is sealed, sitting here singing the song of his life with three of his strongest believers playing by his side, all 4 clearly connected in the moment. Easily one of the most powerful performances you'll ever see in this lifetime, or any other
I was a heroin addict for six years. This song hits deep for me. Homeless, a hooker, jail, the whole deal. I know the feeling of just wishing you could just be inside of someone else. I lived it every day for six years. Been clean 15 years now. I get it. Poor Layne.
I was one for 27 years, imagine what that does to a person. Gratefully I am now clean 6 1/2 years. Seeing Layne this way breaks my heart. I know that pain all too well. It's even sadder he couldn't find his way out.
Great job getting set free from that life. I think we all deal with stuff on different levels. I can't grasp everything he is singing about addiction but I understand it from an outsider looking in. Ive had friends and family that were addicted.
Layne,Kurt,Chris, and Scott all were amazing. Its fucking tragic that they all couldn't cope. I would have loved to have heard a Soundgarden Unplugged. Chris did so much amazing solo stuff after but yea... It hurts alot knowing all these men are dead and i grew up listening to them and still want them here like alot of my friends that died the same ways.
It’s like Chester Bennington said in an interview. When he’s alone his head is a very dark bad place to be. I’m the same way. It could be an artist thing, we see things differently. I love others, but not myself. I can’t explain it. Neither could he. It’s just who we are.
@@carlwinsloI agree, but also on the flip side, what would they sing about? I’m not saying this justifies anything at all. But I mean, they sang about real life and struggles. If they didn’t, then what?
We grew up hearing all the time about baby boomers, well the baby boomers ruined the world but that is not relevant here. I mean that I was born in 1970 and we got to have these legends in our lives as music.
I love how Jerry is silently cheering Layne on. He knew how difficult it was for him to even be there, much less absolutely KILL this session. I wish i could go back to this time.
And without a doubt, by miles and miles and miles, the absolute finest unplugged drum performance of all time, hands down. Layne and Jerry get tons of praise for their talents (and rightfully so) but Sean is seriously one of the greatest rock drummers to ever sit behind a kit, him and Jimmy Chamberlain (Smashing Pumpkins) undeniably took their respective bands to the next level with creative in-the-pocket drumming that really glued these timeless songs together and served as the perfect backbone. Not to be negative or pit people against one another, but check out the Stone Temple Pilots unplugged performance ce for an example of a drummer who just doesn't get it... he's the complete opposite, the drum iq between that guy and Sean is lightyears (I dig STP, I just think they would've been so much stronger had their drummer had the same talents as the other 3), It's surreal how much talent was involved in the alchemy of that amazing AiC sound.. songs like Angry Chair and Junkhead completely transport me to another reality every time I hear them.. a true sign of artistic excellence
My husband and his friend did beautiful cover of this song with their guitars. He is military, they typically break them out when they are at the house. They are some top notch guys, him, morgan and the rest of his brothers he serves with. I leave them space. But I keep door cracked. They have some dark humor that makes me laugh. But they all sing together when they play or listen to this song, or any alice in chains song. I listen alot when my husband is gone. He is on 9th deployment now. His fav song is rooster.
100% totally agree with you on that man. Amazing unplugged set here. I’m into all kinds of music and Jay-Z unplugged with the Roots as his band is still a favorite album of man and I gotta give props to Nirvana unplugged too just a great series by MTV
@@degensanonymous Yeah, not with how Kurt looked, but how it was arranged. Layne looked like he was ready for the casket here. Dam shame he just couldn't get clean no matter what they did. He just wouldn't stop
No one talks about the incredible camera work here. The way the camera goes in and out of focus when Layne and jerry are singing just shows the emotions and when Layne belts out that first down in a hole the way the camera zooms in on him just adds another haunting vibe to this whole performance. Great work by MTV . God how did we go from this to practically brain dead content
. Somewhere out there another cut/edit of the session exist.(Though it will probably never see the light of day ) Two weeks following the show, the band was sent a first cut to review and Layne wasn’t happy. He got producer, Toby Wright to watch the unplugged set from start to finish. Layne thought MTV had edited the whole performance in the worst possible light to make Layne look bad, Coletti would take the notes back from Alice in Chains and re-edit the performance and finally get Layne’s approval.
Originally its said that MTV had tried to edit it to paint Layne in a bad light but the band and Layne specifically wouldnt sign off on it till it was fixed...took a couple months too..
This song kept playing in my head when I was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer in June of 2018. With complete faith in my medical team, God, and his will for me, I have been in remission since October of last year.
Good luck my friend. They diagnosed me with mgus. Then 2 docs thought mm. I felt like I was on borrowed time and scared shitless but when this covid shit hit and I lost two much younger friends, one to liver cancer and one during pregnancy then it put things into perspective. For some reason I felt like I've been on deathwatch waiting for the other hammer to fall and I just grew tired of it. I don't know if there is a God or not but spending time with my 3 yr old makes me feel like there's something to all this spiritual maybe not religious. Peace to you brother. Ramblings of a guy turning 50 soon...maybe.
" down in a hole, losing my soul ", that's very accurate lyrics for a heroin addict, I put 30 years down in the hole, somehow I survived with med program, you isolate more and more with heroin. Great sounding band, amazing performance . RIP brother 🙏
They're not Alice In Chains, but I'm pretty sure that you would like the Howard Jones era of Killswitch Engage. Start with the song "The End Of Heartache". If you like Alice In Chains, then I promise that you'll like Killswitch Engage too. 🤟
Layne wanted Jerry to sing this because it was Jerry's song and he felt like he should. That's why they switched vocal positions in the last verse, and Layne stops singing. Layne wanted him to have some spotlight. Layne loved Jerry's voice.
They both have such awesome voices when put together or separate it's like magic to me and something that is not easily replicated. I am glad that Jerry did sing quite a bit with Layne anyway because a lot of the music really after Layne's passing still sounds just like Alice in Chains because of Jerry Cantrell
There will never be another Layne Staley. Not to take anything away from guys like Cobain and Cornell, but there's just something about Layne's voice that grabs you and doesn't let go. RIP to a legend.
We were privileged to have Layne. During the performance he was hurting… and he was able to knock out the vocals like nothing… this album lives in my heart. Thanks for everything Layne.
Bro, you made my eyes watery. Alice in Chains was everything to me growing up. My wife will never understand how their lyrics speak deep into one's soul.
So true. It's so rare to see that honest tortured soul tone come through.. Jonathan Davies of Korn (early Korn) had it, the guys in Dark New Day captured it briefly with the song Brother I think, Anathema have done it in multiple songs, and it comes through in Antimatter's stuff too. Grabs you by the heart every time.
I think that's what has always made AIC stand out to me when compared to their contemporaries, the harmonization between Layne and Jerry. Their voices were so different from one another, yet they always sounded amazing together.
all these years and i've just noticed that each of their vocal parts are what they really wanna say to each other, jerry being optimistic about life and layne being layne
Layne died 19 years ago today; he was dying here and not only did he give one of the best performances of all time, he still gave a better performance than anybody today. RIP Layne you were one of the greatest singers to ever live, we miss you.
Thanks for sharing this. He's one of the best vocalist that we've ever had the privilege of in our lives. Been listening to this same show 20 years, never get enuf. I remember the fear I had watching it on MTV, I jumped up towards the tv a couple of times like I thought I could catch him, told my husband that night I hoped Layne could get better. So damn tragic. Idk if he really knew his true gift, so shy, by the way, by the way. Forever turning 28 next week...
The pain… I’ve been clean for 13 years… this shit right here is more powerful than any rehab, meeting, etc. Unplugged can’t be touched. All of them are absolutely perfect. From the hell of addiction to the amazing side of live… this is what’s called perspective.
two they said that layne was very self concious of his teeth, and other things and thought the first edit made him look bad so they edit more … so who knows what was truly the best vocal performance out of them .
@@jayde-mariesimpson4555 if you listen to his bandmates talk about this performance they talk about constantly having to restart songs because Layne didn't remember the words. theres also a rumor he had a throw up bucket next to him because he was so sick from addiction at this point
I don’t EVER comment on things, but this particular video is so special to me. When I was a little girl, my mom raised me on 90’s “grunge”. I have so many special memories of Saturday mornings at home, windows open, with Alice In Chains blaring as my parents cleaned the house. Life took an ugly turn not too long after that. When I was young adult, my mom and I became extremely close. She was my absolute best friend in the world. I lost her to cancer in the summer of 2017. Now that I’m around the age she was when she listened to this music, it hits me on such a different level. I became obsessed with Layne and started researching his entire life and career. I can now understand. I feel the same pain and drive that she did through his voice, over 20 years later. It makes me feel like she’s still here... telling me she understands and it’s okay. So grateful for AIC, and this live session.
If you haven't already done so, pick up a copy of David DeSola's book, "AiC, The Untold Story", it's a very good read and follows Laynes life well. Sorry for your loss, the pain you're feeling is the love you have shining through. God bless.
my heart goes out to you Megan. I understand exactly what you mean by the song making you feel connected to your Mum. I lost my best friend Jenny in April 2018 and I remember she put this song on a mixed CD for me back in the late 90's.. now when i listen I understand her connection to this song and I feel close to her. Obviously your Mum and my BFF had the best taste in music :-)

For anyone that says grunge was just a fad and overrated… Well if you don’t recognize this as raw talent and stunningly beautiful, you have no musical heart.
I wish I would have been mature enough to enjoy it when it came out, but I was too focused on being into "kvlt" and "brutal" music and thought this was "wussy." Ears weren't old enough yet.
@@mr.mojorisin2321 Metal? You definitely don’t understand music genres. Aic is not metal. All grunge and barely alternative but definitely not metal. Especially from a guy calling himself Mr Mojo Risin.,how would classify the doors?
Cantrell has an amazing way with words and music. This song was originally written by Jerry after the end of his 7-year relationship and the helplessness he felt at the time. But when sung by Layne it transcends its original intent to mirror Layne's own struggles with addiction. This song is a masterpiece.
I agree, this song transcends directly to Layne's struggle, jerry's head shake after the first chorus proves that. with a huge smile on his face, he knows this song portays pain. And who better to sing this song with conviction, than Mr Layne Staley, who seems choked up with the lyrics. Brings on a totally new feel that this song has nothing to do with Jerry's past relationships, but laynes everyday struggle.
Layne gave up after Demri died. Even though she had already broke up with him, he paid for her heart surgery. She continued to use, and died. He was heartbroken and I really believe he died when she died.
Indeed. I always find myself reminiscing of simpler times listening to this. It's like the scent of something that instantly takes you back to a particular place. Damn, if only Lane was here to finish living his dreams.
My teenaged son played AIC for me the other day. He’s discovered their magic on his own. I showed him these unplugged versions because they really showcase the extraordinary talent of this group especially Layne’s lead and Jerry’s harmonies which are still mind blowing. I know I’m not the only one who feels this. I wish I could travel back in time, give Layne a big hug, and take him somewhere safe. I hope he knows how special he was and how much he’s missed. ❤😢
15 years ago i thought my funeral was coming soon. I have a wife and two kids now and this song takes me back and makes me so grateful i survived. Friends dont let friends do heroin.
What are you talking about? I don't understand what you are saying. I am not a drug addiction. But just common sense tells you that once you try a drug you will get hooked. I just like rock music especially Alice in Chains. I am not an addict just a lover of good music
Exactly. I had years of hatred for my whole family, I just wanted to be left alone to do heroin but they never gave up and dragged me out of my heroin addiction after many, many failures. I ve been clean nearly 30 years now and i still owe each of them a debt i can never fully repay but even now, each day clean , chips a bit off.
Jerry is a genius. And a pretty darn good singer. He gets credit for writing and riffing, but his vocals are on point too. Maybe the most underrated musician of the '90s.
Simple music can make you sing, a simple hug can make you feel, better, simple things can make you happy, I hope my simple hello will put a smile on your face..😊 Hello!!! How are you doing today, please pardon me for intruding into your privacy but I just wanted to know if you're a fan ? Have a great day.. Stay Safe 🙏
A hug to you and I hope this song hits you deep like it does to all of us - amazing things happen in this world all the time. This is one of them, you found it and there's a whole lot more. Keep looking!
Oh wow I always thought it was “my wings are BENT so denied”. Learned something new today. I thought he was saying he’s physically broken so he can’t live the life he wants.
Jerry should be mentioned too tho, it wasn’t just 1 when it came to their music, this is Jerry’s song and most of their most famous and relatable lyrics are written by him too. Both Jerry and Layne helped a lot of people but for some reason Layne always gets all the credit for it even if Jerry was writing the whole song and lyrics. Both of them were some of the best and most relatable lyricists ever. Sad that no amount of people or help was able to save Layne tho, he was past the point of wanting help, tragic story. Definitely a legend tho.
This song has stopped me from the end several times. My purpose is here until God takes me home. I know this fully now. Thank you for you sacrifice and making this song for the broken
That nod of approval from Jerry at 2:16 is everything! It's almost like you can see him giving the band this look of "see, I told you he was gonna kill it!" RIP Layne 🙏🙏
See what life is like. A man on the verge of death, singing a song that exposed everything he felt at that moment, making dozens of people happy around him. Be at peace, Layne.
@poop face whether or not Layne wrote the song is irrelevant. In 1996, Layne already knew his path was set in stone (no pun intended). You listen to this song, and most AIC songs for that matter, for the same reason the rest of us do. Laynes voice is definitely a part of that, but the lyrics are what hit home, I.e. many can relate in their own way. Esio is 100% correct. For Layne to get up on stage and sing this song at this point in time is the epitome of relatability. You can hear it in his voice, and it isn’t just due to his deterioration and lack of teeth. CANTRELL is a great writer and I do agree that we need to give him credit as he was the other half of AIC. RIP Layne
@poop face I agree. I remember reading an interview where he said he used to have kids come up to him and tell them how high they were, thinking he would be impressed or something. Obviously that’s not what he wanted. For the record, Layne wrote quite a bit himself, though Jerry is responsible for many of their hits. Pretty much the last half of Dirt is Layne. Tooth loss, especially due to drug addiction, is a gradual process. He still had some teeth in ‘96, but he was clearly on the decline was my point. The irony is apparent and very sad.
I absolutely agree. I watch all live band videos looking at the interaction between the band members. There are so many great ones to even begin to mention, but you are spot on with this one!
Word is that Jerry smiling at Mike came about from a fight between them before the show. Basically about whether Layne would be able to perform. So it was an I told you so!
2:16 that smile there, i read in an interview that the band actually had a fight weather or not Layne could pull the show off. Jerry was the only one who was certain he could, so when he hit that high note he gives a "told you so" to the rest of the guys. unreal man, the dudes pretty much dead, and the drugs have sucked all the life out of him, and he still managed to project as much emotion into this. music is incredible.
I love the unplugged aic put on the best unplugged ever very soothing from beginning to end this version of down in a hole is the best aic rocks I'm happy they are still together I miss Layne and his amazing voice his song writing his message he sent with his music he is missed by countless people and will always be remembered. back to aic today they are carrying on with the new singer he is a good musician I like him hes not trying to be layne or anything hes being himself helping keep aic to keep playing music the band made a good Choice with hiring William. Jerry said in a interview that aic is a 2 pilot aircraft and always has been. I like that very dedicated. RIP Layne you will rock on in the hearts of everyone and the future fans that will love your music and will touch the hearts of countless people to come
Sean Kinney gets about 3% of the credit he deserves for his drumming i swear. Guy is just THERE. His accents and extra bits are so crisp and just RIGHT. And its so much harder to drum slow and the dude just vibes. Legend.
Absolute legend ! He's the most perfect musician out of all of them playing here ! I mean no disrespect to any one here but he's insane ! Mr Perfect !!
Jerry Cantrell harmonizes with Laynes in such a unique way. They complement each other so well, yet together they have such a powerful, somber, and eerie melody. The sheer odds of them both forming a band and being so perfect for each other are astronomical. That's why I feel so blessed to have grown up with AIC.

I don't think you'll ever find this amount of pain and feeling in music. The Seattle scene had a few. Chris Cornell, and the amazing chester Bennington is another incredible talent gone too soon. I'd b all 4 cloning musicians
Ken W Either way the drugs were hitting him in ‘96 by this concert he had already lost his top teeth. By ‘98 during his final sessions with AiC he’s slimmed down so much weight and lost the rest of his teeth. Basically looking like an old man in ‘98 god knows how bad he looked in 2002 before he passed.
Hands down the best Unplugged performance, ever. Watching Layne painfully belt out verse after verse sticks with me. There will NEVER be another like him. R.I.P. Layne Staley 🙏🕊️❤️
Layne’s performance during this unplugged session was haunting. Closed eyes, minimal movement, head down, and, at the same time, most powerful and sorrowful vocals.
I literally just posted a comment about this exact same thing! This era of music was the last to actually play real instruments and were musically inclined. Now most music (if you can even call it music) is made with a soundboard and auto tuned 10 times over, which requires a minimum amount of skill to produce.
Absolutely ridiculous how good this is. Truth is I used to listen to this when I was coming down and hating myself, crying how painful life was. Now I come here to listen to it, tears of joy of how good life is and how far I’ve come. 7 years sober. It’s a reminder of how quick life can get away from you. Godspeed
Because cheap reality TV was at its peak in the early 2000s and companies like MTV and The History Channel realized it was much cheaper/easier to produce than big budget music videos/guest appearances
@@reecetrahan6169 I'm in recovery 35 years and I wouldn't give it up for all the money in the world. Well maybe for that. Lol 😂 but no it's very important to me to keep my life together.
8 days today. Haven't been this clean since I was about 9 years old and I'm 41. I am feeling a lot of feelings I haven't ever felt. The wind blows a little different. Lost a only brother in 2017 from an overdose and my sister in March of this year. Hanging on. One day at a time is all we can do these days
This song feels like the last energy you have dealing with this world being released. You've tried it all, it all didn't work out and you're ready for some rest. RIP bro, this is amazing talent on display. Thanks for the show.
Exactly what I think. Chris Cornell was almost untouchable but Layne had something else... For me, either Layne, Chris or Jeff Buckley were the greatest singers of the 90's. But that's my personal opinion...
Listening to AIC when my depression was nearing its worst around five years ago, got me through the struggle. It hit a little too close to home, watching a family member struggle with addiction at one point, but he's better now. Been two years clean and I'm proud of him.
Heartbreaking. You can feel all of it in this one song. So much weight and emotion. Its as if everything that happened was meant to happen to bring this one moment in time for this song
No one can ever know what this song is about unless you lived through it. Lane Staley is one of the most unappreciated singers of our time and his songs actually have a message unlike all the other bullshit they call music!!!!!! People need to stop remembering him for how he died or for faults he had and remember him for being the talented and beautiful person he was. I know his music has helped me through some of the darkest most hopeless times of my life. Heroin addiction affects all people from all walks of life and it doesn't make a person a bad person and at least lane was upfront and honest about his addiction. Lane Staley was a gift to the world and he heloped change my life. And if there is a heaven I know he is there. God bless
Well put, again to remind people, Jerry wrote this song about a girl, yet during this performance it means something so perfect between the two. RIP Layne who was the first person I learned how to sing to, and poor Jerry that he had to go through losing a brother. Jerry is still a tough guy and I'm very glad he has kept the band alive.. percivered. What a blessing this band was/is.
This song takes me back to Vietnam, 66-68.I was a 20yr. old machine gun man, door gunner hanging out of a helicopter with a m-60 machine gun watching tracers flying up at me.They couldn’t kill me either.
this was by far the best band to come out of the seattle grunge area. everything this band had to offer from harmonies to playing was unmatchable. long live layne

I came across this song a couple months ago on TH-cam and that is how I discovered this band. The only song by AiC I recall knowing was Your Decision. But this - Blown. Away.
Layne was legitimately singing his own eulogy here. One of the last times he was seen in public, let alone performed. RIP to arguably one of, if not, the greatest male vocalist to exist.

Tilidin Berlinov Jiffy Lube MTV lost its respect a long time ago they used to be good and it would play great music especially unplugged but now there's not even a thought to go to MTV it sucks
That must have been so hard for him to perform knowing that his days were numbered at this point but yet he performed flawlessly for his fans and his band. No one will ever compare to that commitment
Soyhr The deal with the stage: They had whole different stage planned. And then Layne showed up with pink hair. Why he was expected to show up with a normal hair is beyond me. He's Layne Staley . But I guess it bothered them and they changed the set so that it would look like his hair was reflecting off the pink lighting. I don't know what the original stage was supposed to look like.
The harmony between Layne and Jerry is so beautiful. The way that Jerry just smiles after the first chorus as he looks at Layne. You can tell Jerry knew how special those moments were. It almost feels like someone singing at their own funeral
"i have been guilty of kicking myself in the teeth, I will speak no more of my feelings beneath." How much can we all relate to that, right? God I miss him. And them together.
On top of Jerry's recognition for Layne at 2:16. At 4:36, you can see Layne pause for a moment to appreciate his good friend Jerry's voice and even break a bit of a smile. Their brotherhood was something special and is forever eternalized.
@@marckoolwijk2913no it wasn't. The other band members didn't think Layne could sing that part in his condition and wanted someone else to do that part. Jerry said "no, he is the only one that can do it". The nod was an "I told you so".
The wink jerry gave around 2:18 to the rest of the band was a sort of "I told ya so"; this is because with Layne not recently being able to perform whole shows and messing up songs, they questioned whether he would be able to do this particular show that night, to which jerry answered "yes, he can do it". That smile and everything about this performance shows just how much Layne struggled, but also, how much jerry missed and loved performing with his best friend. Truly masters of the craft and by far one of the best without a doubt.
Yes, Jerry loved so much Layne, we can see it multiple times during this show. During other songs he turned and winked to the other members. I feel at this point Layne joined the Unplugged for the band because they didn't tour because of his addiction and he felt guilty. Even if he sang this song particularly and the other with much passion, I feel his mind was far away.
Also the smile he gives as he watches him in awe just says to me... god damn this guy is amazing! You know, that feeling you get when you see someone do something so amazing you just feel like you're trapped in the moment, seeing a work of art so rare that you'll never see anything like it again.
He just needed a quick fix, just enough to do the job but not nod off. That's why he kept his eyes closed most of the performance, as well I think he already had lost some teeth at this point
My favorite part is when Jerry sing "feeling so small". Layne kinda looks back at him with a little smile on his face. He liked Jerry's voice so much and always encouraged him to sing more on their records.
Can we talk about the look on Jerry face every time he looks at Layne?😍 like he's saying "you okay buddy? You got this" ugh just kills me every time 💔😿
Maybe he’s smirking because, unfortunately, he knows how true it is not just metaphorically, but literally? Layne has wasted away to a small shell of himself by this point (though his voice was still huge), and tragically he would waste away even more from the drugs until his body could take the abuse no more. Hard to know, but given the subject matter of the song and his condition at the time, it seems plausible to me that the line seemed too real to him in several ways.
You know the band is legendary when you prefer the unplugged session over the studio recordings
My go to 💯

Same with Nirvana and STP
If only Soundgarden performed Unplugged
You know you are gentrified and pedestrian when you prefer mellow acoustic to imaginative, powerful, and subversive rock.

... Well said. Tragic topic but beautiful song lyrically & musically ...
beautifully put. kills me man..
If that's how he felt on this unplugged show, imagine what he felt when his fiancee died a few months later...
RIP Layne and Demri
🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️
🙏❤
poor you. stop kicking me in the teeth
The saddest part is I don’t think Layne knew how great he was! I wish that he could see how much his music means to people 20 years later.
Sad thing is that is how it's gone with most musicians who have touched our souls. Special souls they are or was.
He knew is just a devil you can't kick sometimes.
The vocal harmony between Layne and Jerry is really out of this world
It really was one of the true beauties in this world.
So otherworldly!
perfectly described.
It’s incredible. Never heard anything like it before and don’t know that I ever will.
It is absolutely insane. Especially in this song, it is magnificent. The way they take each other over and add each other.. Wow!
He never lost it.
No matter how high, how sick...
The look on Jerry's face was pure respect and love for his troubled brother.
This comment is pure only few even understand... addiction is not a joke depression is not a joke
amen
yeah, he looks so wasted. It's a sad thing to watch, but somehow he pulls off those vocals like nothing ever happened

They were the most rawly talented mainstream musicians at the time

YES! One of the best performances by any band ever!
The bass throughout this whole set is unbelievable

Mike Inez is fantastic, and there's just something about an acoustic bass.
And he got kicked out of Ozzy(?) because he partied too much........and Ozzy took their drummer....i think

Drums too
Layne and Jerry were just meant to be together. I've never heard two voices merge so beautifully and effortlessly.
totally aye. Def having a A.I.C resurgence here.

Eagles had probably the best harmony as a band, they all sang and did it so well together, even though they didn't get along. Other than that, I agree
Harmony? Voices? Way back... Beach Boys, before that, The Everly Brothers.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING 😉
I love how Jerry is silently cheering Layne on. He knew how difficult it was for him to even be there, much less absolutely KILL this session. I wish i could go back to this time.
25 years of this show. One of the greatest unplugged performance of all time.

Only thing that rivals it is Nirvana.

@@MiceliCreations yup no words really. I own both on vinyl and jamming out to both is my favorite thing to do
The best in my opinion. The emotion and sheer desperation of Layne makes this the most guineue performance ever...RIP
No autotune, just pure singing, pure emotion, pure magic, AIC
For fuck sake, autotune isn't even as widespread as y'all make it seem.
@@SS-gx7tg Ele não era virtuoso, mas a pegada e controle de volume para o acústico realmente foi bem profissional. Ficou top top

Someone said this was the closest you'll get to seeing someone sing at their own funeral and I was like Damn
Same with Elvis's last show
That slammed me. Such a deep statement that formed a mental picture that literally took my breath.
Same with Kurt on the Nirvana session…
Damn,,, Layne was the best !!!
God how did we go from this to practically brain dead content
it was the last of the best..
.
Somewhere out there another cut/edit of the session exist.(Though it will probably never see the light of day )
Two weeks following the show, the band was sent a first cut to review and Layne wasn’t happy. He got producer, Toby Wright to watch the unplugged set from start to finish. Layne thought MTV had edited the whole performance in the worst possible light to make Layne look bad, Coletti would take the notes back from Alice in Chains and re-edit the performance and finally get Layne’s approval.
Well we have NPR Tiny Desk series
Originally its said that MTV had tried to edit it to paint Layne in a bad light but the band and Layne specifically wouldnt sign off on it till it was fixed...took a couple months too..
Yeah, nobody talks about.. euh... things. You know... things.

Yes, agree.
Layne wanted Jerry to sing this because it was Jerry's song and he felt like he should. That's why they switched vocal positions in the last verse, and Layne stops singing. Layne wanted him to have some spotlight. Layne loved Jerry's voice.
And Jerry loved Laynes voice 2:15
the best part of the whole video is where Layne stops singing for a moment and gives Jerry this small proud smile
I noticed that as well and thought it was incredibly touching.
Layne said in the interview once that jerry is one of the coolest person he ever met
They both have such awesome voices when put together or separate it's like magic to me and something that is not easily replicated. I am glad that Jerry did sing quite a bit with Layne anyway because a lot of the music really after Layne's passing still sounds just like Alice in Chains because of Jerry Cantrell

That haunting voice; one of the most unique voices able to convey darkness, depression, despair, torment. Heartbreaking.

Wow! What a way to describe this magic
God bless.

Jake Kology well spoken my friend.
Layne gave up after Demri died. Even though she had already broke up with him, he paid for her heart surgery. She continued to use, and died. He was heartbroken and I really believe he died when she died.

He had a voice of an angel. I pray his death finally brought him peace.
@poop face so?
I will always love how at the 2:18 mark, you see Jerry look to Mike and smile as if to say “we caught lightning in a bottle”.

Jerry was the only one who was certain he could, so when he hit that high note he gives a "told you so" to the rest of the guys. unreal man, the dudes pretty much dead, and the drugs have sucked all the life out of him, and he still managed to project as much emotion into this. music is incredible.
It was a perfect performance!
Dude this was in 1996..he died in 2002..he had plenty of years left..u don't know shit
RIP Layne you will rock on in the hearts of everyone and the future fans that will love your music and will touch the hearts of countless people to come
I seriously believe he had HIV..
I was looking through the comments to see if anyone else noticed that..Love it.
Sean Kinney gets about 3% of the credit he deserves for his drumming i swear. Guy is just THERE. His accents and extra bits are so crisp and just RIGHT.
And its so much harder to drum slow and the dude just vibes. Legend.
Very creative musical drummer. Underrated for sure
Absolute legend ! He's the most perfect musician out of all of them playing here ! I mean no disrespect to any one here but he's insane ! Mr Perfect !!
Agreed
Kinney and Inez is one of the best rhythm sections in rock and roll
This comment ✌️♥️💪
Jerry Cantrell harmonizes with Laynes in such a unique way. They complement each other so well, yet together they have such a powerful, somber, and eerie melody. The sheer odds of them both forming a band and being so perfect for each other are astronomical. That's why I feel so blessed to have grown up with AIC.
This version of Down in a Hole is better than the album version. Their harmonies are soul crushing. No one will ever be able to sing like Layne.
Layne is the soul of AIC and Jerry is the body that's my definition of AIC.
This truly was the moment in history where Layne became Heisenberg. Bravo Vince.
Harmony is Everything
it's masterful. you can see Layne truly enjoying Jerry's singing. this is stuff of the rock gods. it gets me.
oh layne. we miss you. the amount of soul in that powerhouse of a voice brings me to tears and always will.
Lyrics:
Bury me softly in this womb
I give this part of me for you
Sand rains down and here I sit
Holding rare flowers
In a tomb, in bloom
Down in a hole and I don't know if I can be saved
See my heart I decorate it like a grave
You don't understand who they thought
I was supposed to be
Look at me now a man
Who won't let himself be
Down in a hole, losin' my soul
Down in a hole, losin' control
I'd like to fly, but my wings have been so denied
Down in a hole and they've put all the stones in their place
I've eaten the sun so my tongue
Has been burned of the taste
I have been guilty of kicking myself in the teeth
I will bring no more of my feelings beneath
Down in a hole, losin' my soul
Down in a hole, losin' control
I'd like to fly but my wings have been so denied
Bury me softly in this womb
(Oh I want to be inside of you)
I give this part of me for you
(Oh I want to be inside of you)
Sand rains down and here I sit
Holding rare flowers in a tomb
(oh I want to be inside of you)
Oh I want to be inside
Down in a hole, losin' my soul
Down in a hole, feelin' so small
Down in a hole, losin' my soul
Down in a hole, out of control
I'd like to fly but my wings have been so denied
Thank you

Can we bring this back? This music? This feeling? This vibe. The world needs more of this.
Такого уже не будет.
I’d say it takes real pain and the strength to share it, but everyone hides their feelings nowadays
I don't think that's possible. It was a special time in music.
I don't think you'll ever find this amount of pain and feeling in music. The Seattle scene had a few. Chris Cornell, and the amazing chester Bennington is another incredible talent gone too soon. I'd b all 4 cloning musicians
The vibe is terrible wtf do you mean. An addict bemoaning his life doomed to addiction and suffering. Still RIP to Layne
This guy is dying and half dead and he still has that voice, it's unreal.
Ken W Either way the drugs were hitting him in ‘96 by this concert he had already lost his top teeth. By ‘98 during his final sessions with AiC he’s slimmed down so much weight and lost the rest of his teeth.
He was high as a kite it’s why he had a lisp while singing

No autotune. No electronic accompanies. Only live sounds. Masterpiece❤

How on gods earth did MTV go from putting on masterpiece shows like this to being taken over by Jersey Fucking Shore?
Because cheap reality TV was at its peak in the early 2000s and companies like MTV and The History Channel realized it was much cheaper/easier to produce than big budget music videos/guest appearances

For me, either Layne, Chris or Jeff Buckley were the greatest singers of the 90's. But that's my personal opinion...
The BEST!!!

AIC is my favorite band!! I was lucky enough to be in the audience with my great friend Monica for this once in a lifetime opportunity!! RIP Layne
Listening to AIC when my depression was nearing its worst around five years ago, got me through the struggle. It hit a little too close to home, watching a family member struggle with addiction at one point, but he's better now. Been two years clean and I'm proud of him.
It's just so sad to see Layne, he looks so empty on this, but still singing like a God, RIP!
Check him out during the Mad Season live songs. Scary.
Heartbreaking. You can feel all of it in this one song. So much weight and emotion. Its as if everything that happened was meant to happen to bring this one moment in time for this song

Here Layne looks like a wounded bird, and you have the feeling that Jerry protects him. So calm right now.
Jerry knew the end was near
That's not a wounded bird, that's a lion in the midst of his last roar...
I noticed just now.. How much pain there is on both of their faces... Poor Jerry.. No wonder he never smiles

I’m digging the simplicity of the stage design. Nothing flashy. Candles, lights, and a lava lamp.
I miss the 90’s
Soyhr The deal with the stage: They had whole different stage planned. And then Layne showed up with pink hair. Why he was expected to show up with a normal hair is beyond me. He's Layne Staley . But I guess it bothered them and they changed the set so that it would look like his hair was reflecting off the pink lighting. I don't know what the original stage was supposed to look like.

@@marckoolwijk2913no it wasn't. The other band members didn't think Layne could sing that part in his condition and wanted someone else to do that part. Jerry said "no, he is the only one that can do it". The nod was an "I told you so".

Absolutely agree
Thank you everyone, I have never had so much likes

You got this" ugh just kills me every time 💔😿
@@monicatorres5233 same .. hits me every time. Checking on him and encouraging him .
Through this whole concert you can see it on Jerry's face he's thinking damn my guys still got it
@Rosetta Stoned maybe your not looking into it enough
