Please beware of scammers. I am not on Telegram nor do I do giveaways in my comment section. Also, just to note, I forgot about the spaceship scene at the very beginning which is why I had those questions about the origin of the Predator. :)
Miss, I hate to put this to you but I don't think you were told exactly what movie you're watching. This is blood, guts and carnage! The Predator or Yauja wants to go against the most dangerous game to earn honour and glory. Humans are called Pyode Amedha - the Soft Meat That Fights with Weapons in their language. Hunting humans is a privilege only few Yauja earn. This one is not just a full-blooded hunter, he has a full trophy cabinet of skulls at home of some of the most dangerous beings in this galaxy. Meaning he is an Elite Hunter. Strictly speaking, this should not have happened. Arnie got insanely lucky! Billy kicked the bird because it was eating the strung-up soldiers! Dillan is a CIA field operative. They are soldiers. This is the field. It is not a matter of out ranking. It's a matter that he did something stupid in enemy territory and Sgt Mac gave him a short sharp lesson in reality. The team is a special rescue group of the Green Berets. Category A badasses! And they are in Colombia. Wires under tension vibrate, which creates heat, making them visible to the Yauja's infrared vision. Jim and John Thomas came up with the idea of a hunter whose species evolved on Earth hundreds of thousands of years ago. Something like the dinosaurs if they had survived to evolve; half mammal, half reptile. Combining the best of both. They were taken off Earth as slaves by an alien insectoid species. They were hunted and used as gladiators for generations as amusement for their captors. Although, what they were actually doing was a pure Darwinian process, that created the first Predator, as only the strongest got to mate. This larger, more powerful, more aggressive Yauja led a rebellion that freed his people. They were irrevocably changed by their experiences at the hands of this alien species. This Yauja became the first king and his dictates became the laws of the Yauja people. They became hunters, first of their world's most dangerous prey and in so doing they repeated that Darwinian process. Only those who survived; the strongest, the most powerful, most aggressive Yauja got to mate. Their children continued those traits and took them out into the galaxy with their enslavers technology. For thousands of years, this process continued. The Yauja took their own evolution into their own hands and bent it to their will. The reason why they tearout spines isn't just a claim the trophy, it's in order to take the spinal fluid from the most dangerous species across the galaxy and return them to Yauja Prime to be studied. They want to take the best of every species and make it their own. Billy understands the Yauja, his ancestors encountered them. He knows the Yauja wants to fight the ultimate prey. To face someone when its own life is on the line. That's the glory part! Billy sacrificed himself so his friends had time to get away, knowing the Yauja couldn't refuse something this honourable. It's against their nature. This is also why the Yauja has marked Dutch. He has seen the honour, the respect and the skill. He understands that Dutch is the superior warrior and everything he is looking for. To take Dutch in combat, would be the highlight of this hunt. His glory would be great! He knows the females will go nuts for him when he returns! You keep asking, where did it come from? You saw the ship drop him off at the beginning of the movie! The Yauja Shift-Suit/camouflage is affected by water, yes. Once it's dry, it returns to full functionality. What you are witnessing at the end of this movie is tribal, powerful combat. Dutch is offering to go one-on-one to distract the Yauja, so it doesn't go after Anna. That level of honour and sacrifice is not something that can be refused Dutch is giving the Yauja everything he longed for on this hunt and the Yauja honours him by preparing his weapons as if he is going against the most dangerous being on this planet. Fun fact: the Yauja's self-destruct took out enough rainforest to cover a hundred city blocks and the jungle grew back thicker and fuller within 10 years. You need to watch Predator 2. It's based on the novel, Concrete Jungle.
This is a good thing! I think many people do kind of just skip over it, and it's probably the one change I'd make to the movie, almost putting a spoiler right at the beginning.
@@wingnut5404I've heard people bring this up and it's a nice debate for sure. Myself because of how committed this film is to the B plot of the with the gurellia camp I think you need the ship there so the Predator reveal doesn't come completely out left and make the audience go wtf but in the bad way of totally lost now.
Billy cutting himself that way is an old native American tradition. The warrior spoils the game by taking first blood himself, thereby denying the enemy any glory.
33 minutes in - the alien has decided that Dutch is a worthy opponent and so he chooses to go more hand to hand. It's a question of respect and honour.
Yes that is Carl Weathers who played in Rocky as well. Also at the end of the movie after the Predator detonates his bomb the chopper pilot looking down at the explosion is the actor who played the Predator.
The reason Arnold's shoulder was fine is because the Predator's shot mostly hit his gun, if you look closely you can see it split in half from the shot. Hence Arnold's shoulder was only kind of burnt instead of completely missing like Dylan's.
26:05, Billy is cutting himself to deny the Predator the honor of drawing first blood on him. It may be at this moment that Billy finally realized what the Predator is and figured stop running like prey. Notice Billy wrapped the cord of his medicine bag around his knife. Perhaps that allowed him to get in one good lick before he died. I can't remember if the novel tie-in specified. Adhering to their twisted sense of honor, the Yautja admired Billy's bravery by making sure to remove and clean his trophy later.
Drawing first blood is an honor thing, but it's also a huge confidence boost for the person who draws first blood. Not to mention a big morality debuff to the person who gets injured. By starting the fight out with a self-inflicted scratch, you can sidestep losing the advantage in a fight.
My take on it is that he knows he's going to die, but he'd rather die with his knife in his hand. Also with blood on his knife. If not the enemy's then at least his own.
Billy's actions are those of a native spirit warrior. He rips the spirit bag from his neck wraps it around his hand and then draws a wound across his chest. This is to show his bravery and to deny the enemy's first blood.
This film has the distinction of having three politicians in the cast. Arnold Schwarzenegger went on to become governor of California (2003-2011). Jesse Ventura went on to become governor of Minnesota (1999-2003). Sonny Landham ran for governor of Kentucky but was defeated in the Republican primary. Sonny then ran for the Kentucky state House and was defeated. Sonny then ran for US Senate of Kentucky and was defeated.
He was my governor and whatever he accomplished (a total centrist in office, really) calling out the 2 parties on their mutual complicity in the corrupt duopoly of the current US electoral system. This is arguably my all time favorite movie, and the"aawww, that was the pu$$y joke guy" line was worth watching the reaction in itself, I laughed my ass off at that one.

Fun fact: the Predator was played by the late Kevin Peter Hall, who stood at a height of seven feet 2 inches, and played many similar monster characters during his career. Loved your reaction to this stone cold classic!
Why do people talk about peoples' height like it's an achievement? It's more of a handicap to be above average height. It gives no advantages, only lots of disadvantages. Especially freakishly tall people: only a handful can use it as a way to make some money in the movies (no more than talented normal-height people can though) or back in the day in the circus.
I think you are the only woman I have seen react to this that laughed at and enjoyed the one character's jokes. Just one of the many reasons I love watching your reactions! Looking forward to seeing you watch the second one.
Most reactors miss this, since it goes by so fast - the Predator split Dutch's gun in half with his shoulder cannon (right before the "Get to the choppa!" line.) That's why the shot didn't kill him outright.
The opening scene shows the Predator arrving on Earth, ejecting from its spaceship. Anna's monologue implies that this isn't the first time something like this has happened. The Predator (or one of its kind) periiodically comes to Earth to look for a worthy fight.
@@bunnytailsREACTS I always wondered if these little hunting safaris are broadcast back to their planet like pay per view fights or reality tv. Imagine back on the Predator homeward, you got tubby dad bod Yautja watching this while eating sugary snacks and drinking their version of beer. 🤣😂
Lots of people miss this scene, or don't understand what's happening. It should probably have been made more obvious because it's setting up the premise for the whole film. Still a great reaction by bunnytails, but I felt a bit sorry for her confusion during the movie...
Predator is all about the contrast between the first and 2nd parts of the movie. In the first part, the Special Forces team couldn't see him and were shooting blindly into the jungle. After Arnold figured out how to camo himself, the roles reversed. He was hitting predator with explosive arrows from the trees. Predator couldn't see Arnold and began firing blindly into the jungle.
This movie could have been called "The Governors" because both Jesse Ventura and the Schwanzenegger became governors of their respective states: Minnesota and California. The second Pedator movie does answer some, but not all, of your questions. And it has some fun twists. Definitely recommended if you enjoyed this one. It's cool that you drew some parallels between Predator and Alien. Consider watching Alien vs. Predator (aka AVP). It's not the greatest movie in the world, but it does develop both stories in interesting ways.
That's why Carl Weathers once (jokingly) announced his candidacy for governor of his home state of Louisiana, because as it stands now, "Predator" and "The Running Man" are tied for most future governors in a movie, both with Schwarzenegger and Ventura. But if Weathers had become Governor of Louisiana, it would have put "Predator" on top. He was joking about running, of course, but I think he should have done it.
AVP 2 the fps game on PC in the early 2000's was great though, although short lived compared with Halo and Unreal. It was so much fun playing as Predators with their various weapons, cloak, and physical skills, and as a variety of Aliens, and of course the humans(Marines and Corporates) too... host's would call a ban on the SG(Smart Gun) because it kind of ruined things. Knife fights were fun tho. Sadly, the servers went down and no more online support after about 2007 or so....still fun in single player to some extent, despite the dated graphics by today's standards. They need to make a new version. The diversity of gameplay depending on race(alien, predator, and human) really made AVP 2 a good game.
26:05 Billy cuts himself as a taunt. Denying his enemy the honor of drawing his blood. 26:28 kicked, not shot. As "Dutch" observed earlier, the Predator did not shoot her because she was unarmed. She doesn't look like she really has much, if any, experience with military rifles, and the Pred already killed an experienced team one by one. She would only be redesignated as a target if she fired a gun, and die as well.
It's a macho action movie that turns into a slasher film halfway through, but with action heroes instead of campers. The thing is the Predator's honor is very self-serving. It's hunter's honor - they want a good game, a 'fair fight'... but they don't actually expect to lose. Just like lion hunters don't really expect the lion to get away or be hurt.
Not just a great action film…a great movie of any genre. Sensational writing and even acting…Arnold has never been better 🎉❤. (Thanks, Bunny 😊). Filmed in Mismaloya, Mexico
Late to this show - via the algorithm recommendation, but worth the wait. So sad to hear the news of Carl Weathers' passing. May he rest in everlasting peace.
This was one of my favorite movies when I was a teenager. This was the movie that started to separate Arnold from Stallone. It's part action, part horror, part science fiction and all 80s😁
I always say that the big difference is Arnold deferred to others in terms of film making. He didn't know Jack about screenplays or cinematography or the auteur theory. All he knew is if he had any say he wanted to work with quality people and let them do their jobs. Sly came to the biz with bigger ambitions. He wanted to act, write and direct. When you look at his filmography you see Sly when he's not directing himself he's often working with journeymen types. Rarely did he team up with any director with a following, especially in his prime years. Arnold on the other hand when you think of his prime he's just usually paired with a director with a strong vision or sense of style that understood exactly how to use Arnold best or get him to bring his best performances out of him. Milius, Cameron, Hill, Verhoveen... Arnold in his prime worked with a murderer's row of directorial talent. Sly? Not so much. And it's why, now decades later we see that Stallone, while still iconic and with characters like Rocky and Rambo under his belt, his truly stand the test of time entries into the pop culture canon pale next to Arnold's. The quality of Arnold's films began to wane when he started just showing up for the paycheck and didn't fuss about who was at the helm.
Stallone is weak. Outside the Rocky movies, almost everything he does is humorless power fantasy. I love that Arnold can take roles where he doesn’t look good all the time, but stumbles, fails or is made fun of throughout the story.
@@maxducoudray For whatever reason, his personality, his input on set, Arnold's films do have self aware elements. Just think of how he has a catch phrase across different films with "I'll be back". They parodied it in LAST ACTION HERO. Stallone has "Yo Adrian" but that's for one character. That said I think Sly's best work is his earliest on the scene. ROCKY, FIRST BLOOD and the less well known NIGHTHAWKS. Sly shows A LOT of range and is doing character work for real. None of those characters look, act or speak the same. I think in terms of raw acting ability Sly outclasses Arnold. The ending scene of FIRST BLOOD is a tour de force. Like Rocky in the third film Stallone got too comfortable, he wasn't the hungry newcomer anymore. Once he is established the effort is either not there or it's put into the oddest projects. When he was coasting you would get a lazy Rambo sequel or TANGO AND CASH. When he was oddly passionate you'd get COBRA or OVER THE TOP. I think another thing that hurts Stallone's output was he eschewed anything high concept or Scifi or fantasy for the most part. Sly has almost nothing like CONAN THE BARBARIAN, TOTAL RECALL or THE TERMINATOR in his body of work. The closest are JUDGE DREDD and DEMOLITION MAN. And that's on Sly himself because he really chose his projects poorly for a long stretch. I think some films Arnold did could have easily started Sly. Sly could have done either PREDATOR or TOTAL RECALL easily in his prime. But just as SciFi and Fantasy was taking off Sly basically rarely if ever dipped his toe into those kinds of movies.
Yes you were right, that is indeed Carl Weathers who plays Apollo Creed in Rocky. Dutch kicked the gun out of her hands so she wouldn't get killed for being armed. Dutch didn't actually get shot in that scene. The plasma bolt hit his gun which broke apart and subsequently turned to shrapnel, wounding him in the process.
The predators are a bit of an enigma, but some hints as to their motivation were put in this film. Predator 2 clarifies it a bit more, and isn't a horrible movie. I haven't seen any of the other except for Prey, which is a prequel (and is fantastic).
Billy is a Native American tracker, who can read the ground like a book. Again you see Arnie’s real-life good friend Sven, who kills one of the hostages, then kills him with “knock knock”. Blasting away with every gun into the jungle were often done by troops after being ambushed, just hoping you would hit something or at least make the enemy keep their heads down or withdraw. Names in this film like ‘Jim Hopper’ would appear in the TV series ‘Stranger Things’ as a tribute to how popular this film is. Metal and other man-made objects would stand out from the jungle environment in the Predator’s infra-red visions. Mac died with a hole through his head. The Predator would not blow up a skull and be denied a trophy. Bunnytail! Finally someone said it! “Who’s camouflaged now, M………r!” With the situation reversed, the ambushed Predator fires blindly at the jungle hoping to hit something! Actor Kevin Peter Hall who was in the Predator suit was also the helicopter pilot who rescued Arnold. He played Harry the Bigfoot in the film and series ‘Harry and the Hendersons’. All your questions will be answered if you continue with the sequels.
@@tehawesomeface1337 He also wrote for the comicbook Sgt. Rock which is why we see him reading the comicbook in the end credits, and reading the comic while in the helicopter.
I did not know that. I grew up reading Sgt Rock with Joe Kubert and later Russ Heath. I taught myself to do my own comic books in my teens by copying Russ Heath’s Sgt. Rock illustrations. Shane Black (PussyJoke Guy) went on to write and direct ‘The Predator’ 2018.
@@bunnytailsREACTSYes. Once you have Predator 2 under your belt just go right to PREY. Yes there's other films, including the Aliens crossover but I can't recommend any of them to a great degree. Even when they try out interesting ideas the execution was lackluster. No, P1, P2 and Prey.
@@bunnytailsREACTSPredator 2 expands the background of the species a bit. They’ve just given a small tidbit in each movie just to keep the mystery alive (the fans imagination is always more powerful than what’s on film)
At 31:30 if you rewatch that scene you can see the predator using his helmet's targeting system to triangulate approximately where the rock was thrown from, and then just fires in that general direction.
The helicopter pilot at the end is Kevin Peter Hall. The preditor. They did that so he could be seen by the audience. Great reaction. As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
After seeing these guys' awesome tracking skills at the beginning (being able to identify the type, direction, and number of people in the jungle at the helicopter crash); the part after the first kill when Dutch says "Did you find Hawkins?", and Poncho responds "I... I can't tell...". Gold.
Predator mimicking and taunting Dutch's men is not only intimidating 😳 but downright scary too! Especially when the Predator uses Billy's laugh at the end of the film before the Predator nuked himself! -OG
26:26 As Dutch deduced earlier; the Predator didn't harm Anna because she was unarmed, which was correct. a little bit of lore-dump: The Yautja(which is the name of their species) have some strict laws when it comes to their hunting. Only kill species that pose a threat or challenge, which ranges from deadly predators to armed warriors. Killing unarmed civilians, children, or pregnant individuals are deemed as acts of cowardice and are punishable by death or exile from their clan. Their hunts are recorded by their helmets, which are later played back to their elders to judge if they are worthy to rise in ranks.
Fun fact: the Predator design was switched up during production, from a more insectoid looking creature to what we see in the final film. Also, Jean-Claude Van Damme was the original suit actor for the 1st design of the Predator, with some of his shots being used for the reference passes for the Cloaking fx, but they fired him after the redesign because JCVD was difficult to work with and was also too short for the new look Predator, so they got someone else in who better suited the size they wanted
When they had issues, Arnold recommended they go to Stan Winston. Stan didn’t really know what to do, but he remembered some Rastafarian artwork in JoelSilver’s office. He was on a plane to Japan sketching dreadlocks and quills. James Cameron was sitting next to him and he started making suggestions like, “oh I always liked creatures with mandibles” and other various things along the way. By the end of the flight they had much designed everything about the creature, weapons, and other stuff from just iterating on each others ideas.
One element of this movie that may not be obvious in 2023 is that it came out at a time when there were tons of generic action movies. So the first part of the movie plays off those expectations, setting it up as a typical genre entry. Then the predator subverts all that. It made the movie really stand out.
You must not have been paying attention: in the opening of the film, a spacecraft flies past our POV. As it cruises above Earth's atmospher, it releases a pod which then falls to Earth. So, yes, the Predator is an alien. And he is on safari, hunting big game and collecting skulls as trophies. A rite of passage? An excuse to get away from the wife and kids? Who knows, but he's definitely here to do some hunting.
Great reaction, that part in the helicopter at the beginning. That's just soldier banter. When things are about to get sketchy, dark humor and banter lighten up the mood.
This for me is underrated for the performance Arnold gives, and so much of it purely physical as the cast gets whittled down and there's less need for dialogue. By the final act we are almost in a silent film and Arnold gives his all letting us know everything going on inside of Dutch's mind. The atmosphere and the way they light Arnold to give focus to the whites of his eyes works with Arnold's movement and reactions to make for pure film language telling us a story we are invested in. There's far more to recommend with this film beyond just appreciation for supposed 80's cheese I think.
@@VilleHalonen Soderbergh the director of Ocean's 11 did this experiment where he took RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and turned it black and white, edited out the dialogue and replaced the Williams score with this Electronica style music. Whether any of that sounds like an improvement is besides the point. Soderbergh wanted to highlight Spielberg's mastery of film language, blocking and telling a story with visuals. I think PREDATOR getting a similar treatment would be interesting. McTiernen's film could also be stripped of dialogue and its iconic score and you would still be into the story being told just from the visuals.
@@miguelvelez7221 I’m familiar with that edit, it’s really fascinating! I fully agree, it’d be great to see a similar version of Predator. I think there’s a tendency to unfairly compare visual stories to literary ones. After all, we don’t (or at least shouldn’t) judge poetry through the criteria of novels or essays. While I do enjoy a well-written movie, the more I learn about cinematic language, the more I appreciate films that express things in ways unique to the medium.
@@VilleHalonen McTiernen's career highs are very worthy of getting a look over for how he crafts movies balancing both the visual story telling but also he knows how to make the characters and dialogue pop. What he did with PREDATOR, HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER and DIE HARD stand for the ages. Also... Alot of mid tier dreck. 😂
Movie still holds up pretty well after all these years. Like the Alien movie, this started it's own franchise (in movies, books, video games, and comics) which has been both stand alone and mixed in with Alien. The knock off Contra sweatshirt I bought last year has a picture of Arnold from this movie on it, as well as one of Stallone from Rambo.

I wish they would've actually done a Contra film with those two when they were both in their prime. I know they were also rivals at that time. But I think such a film would've been big. At least a big cult classic.
What the Alien, Predator and Terminator franchises have in common is that all three only consist of two films. Yes, despite rumors to the contrary, there are only two, respectively. (Personally, I've made my peace with Alien 3 and Terminator 3 and can accept them for what they are, but I understand everyone who can't, and no other entry in either franchise is even remotely bearable.) Predator 2, despite unfairly damning reviews at the time, is actually really good.
The Predator species hunt for sport, which is why he didn't attack the girl because she was unarmed and not a soldier etc.....therefore no sport. Predators with Adrien Brody is a decent movie too in the franchise
25:00 how to get to graphic but I mean even and they probably used bullet physics which means that the entry hall would be small but the back of the hole would be really big which means Mack's back of his head would be completely blown off and there'd be a relatively small hole in the front so you still be able to see his face most likely
You did a sensational job with this reaction video. Unlike a lot of people you were able to follow along and understand what was going on throughout the entire movie. Great job.
16 minutes in, when everyone starts shooting, they were responding to the first guy shooting - the rest didn't have a clue what he was shooting at but they assumed there was a good reason and no time to ask questions. After all, there might have been a dozen enemies out there.
Special Operation teams train an insane amount so they can predict each other's moves and preferences this is key to their effectiveness; Dillon (Apollo Creed) has been running a desk so long he is out of practice throwing off their routines. These types of teams have and respect rank but in field and off they are brothers first rank second. They need to talk and act fast, so ideas need to be conveyed quickly to preserve the mission effectiveness and safety of team members. Jesse Venture the "sexual tyrannosaurus" who operates "old painless", was a Navy Seal in real life who served in Vietnam war.
This was the first Arnold film I saw and I was very surprised at the twist and progression of the plot. I'm not into dumb action movies and pointless shootouts and explosions, but this movie wasn't heavy-handed, it just got more and more exciting. And the alien had a fascinating mask. When it takes off its helmet and roars - that's one of the highlights for me.
My father, a decorated combat veteran, never hunted. He told me that he didn't hunt, because he was hunted by and hunted the most dangerous prey ever, armed men.
I saw this in the theater back in 1987 and I also saw the sequel in the theater in 1990. Billy was a cool character and I hated to see him die way back in 87 lol. Predators (2010) was pretty good but I thought the ending to that one could have been much better. Prey was pretty good too. Great reaction Bunnytails!!
Dillon is CIA and Dutch and his team are ODA (US Army Special Forces(Green Berets)) - Dillon is a tag-along and has no authority directly - his top goes to the SECDEF (top of the DOD) and he goes to the top of the Army - the CIA commonly recruits from the teams - Dillon used to be a teammate of Dutch before the CIA recruited him - the team knows it so there's a shit ton of baggage there
This movie is the source of several memes. The shot where Arnie and Carl Weathers clench hands, showing off their biceps is a visual meme. Also, the phrases, "If it bleeds, we can kill it," and "Get to the chopper" are well known phrases.
Fun fact: Jesse Ventura(big guy with the minigun) named his autobiography "I ain't got time to bleed", was also former governor of Minnesota.(funny because Arnie was also gov of California). But I won't get into politics here. That interracial bro fist handshake in the beginning has aged well, imo...it is so iconic, and a symbol of unity, and brotherly love! The Predator code of honor and cockiness in wanting a worthy opponent is part of what makes them so cool, but weak compared with Aliens, who have no such concept, and only care about breeding and spreading their insect-like race. So many clever things in this movie, like disguising the heat signature with mud. If you missed the UFO landing in the beginning, it starts off like any regular commando type movie, then your mind gets blown when you discover there's an alien creature hunting humans. 10/10 one of the best movies, and without the whole romance or womanizing of the only female character. (The pussy jokes were hilarious though...omg bunny, hot-dog down a hallway? Hahahahah! I'll keep my thoughts to myself on that comment) Anyhow, I loved watching this with you... Get to da Chopper! bunnytails, the soldier kicked the bird, a vulture because it was eating the remains of a dead U.S. serviceman. Although I think this is a great movie, I actually preferred Predator 2 even though it did not do as well at the box office because it explains a lot of things about the aliens not answered in this movie. I high encourage you to react to Predator 2 which I also think you will enjoy watching.
This is supposed to take place in Central America, during the Cold War. Dillion is supposed to be CIA. Soldiers and marines often dislike the CIA. The intelligence agencies provide them with information, but that information is often incomplete or they have agendas of their own that they don't make regular soldiers aware of. This tends to breed distrust and animosity. In the alien's society, rank and prestige is based on how well one does in the hunt. The tougher and more dangerous the prey a hunter manages to take down, the higher their standing in society. That means they spend a great deal of time traveling around the galaxy looking for the toughest prey possible.
The first 2 Predictor movies are both good - but different - and the last one, Prey, is very different but also very good. This movie is set in Guatemala.
Hi Babe! This was filmed in Mexico! When the Prediter was invisible, it was played by, Jon Cleud Van Dame wearing a pink body suit! At the very beginning, you saw an alien space craft drop a capsule to the Earth, so you know the Predators is an alien! Recommendation, Conan the Barbarian!
At first glance, Predator doesn't seem to be a deep and meaningful artwork. BUT, it is one of the most explicitly philosophical movies of all. The theme is "the human mind as our means of survival". And I can't think of another film that does it better.
@@NeilEvans-xq8ik It's not about intelligence per se. The defining value is how you use your mind and therefore how oriented to reality you are. Some thinkers in history will make a big deal about work, labour and "muscle" as the driving force behind human survival, progress and flourishing (Marxism for instance). But what is on-show in the film, is the obvious physical deficit that any human would have against a Predator, combined with a specific human that defeats it using his thinking rather than his physical ability. Dutch is trusted by his men, for a reason. He is the leader of an elite army rescue unit, for a reason. He works out how they are being hunted and how he can kill the thing that is trying to kill him. Throughout the whole film he is the most rational human there. It's not until the very end that the Predator realizes he's not hunting just another "dumb animal" by his standards.
Yeah, and everything about it was totally unexpected to me. I guess I had this idea of what I thought it would be like and it was completely different, which left me pretty bewildered throughout the movie. Really great stuff!
This movie has a lot of IMDB value. First: There are 2 Governors in the movie: Arnold and Jesse "The Body" Ventura (the funny guy you like, also an ex Pro Wrestler and G.I Joe character "Sgt. Slaughter" , sharing one of his later wrestling monikers). Also, the guy with the Pu**y jokes is Shane Black, the writer of the original Lethal Weapon movie and director of one the sequals "The Predator".
I will watch your reaction later, and then come back to make further comment. For now, I must say that this original Predator movie is one of my all time favorite movies of any kind. I love the cast. I love the location. I love the plot. I love how they did the Predator. I love the writing. I love this movie!
Ventura's multibarrel ubergun is a Minigun (ironically, since its not mimi). Weapons like that seem unlikely to be human-carried in general, they are extremely heavy, go through lots of ammo real fast, and need a battery to power the motors that operate it. Kind of tough to carry all that through the jungle, but that's pretty much the core of Jesse Ventura's character. Ventura was a pro wrestler for a long while, and would become Governor of Minnesota as an Independent. Miniguns are usually mounted on a boat or chopper. Larger examples are mounted in aircraft, or as is the case with the A-10, the aircraft is mounted to the weapon. The Amazon is in South America, primarily Brazil. This is supposed to take place in Guatemala, so the river is likely the Motogua. Apollo's character is CIA, while Ahnold's team is paramilitary mercenaries, not active duty, and answer in no way whatever to the CIA.
The mini in minigun is a reference to the fact that is a much smaller but almost identical copy to the M61 Vulcan. The mini used 7.62mm rifle shells whereas the Vulcan was classified as a 20mm Autocannon which was considered a artillery shell And a “gun” was typically only used to refer to a fixed or partially mobile artillery, autocannon, or machine gun placement. Pistols, Rifles, and sub machine guns are firearms, not guns. The M134 minigun was initially manageable at a mere 84 lbs, unloaded. Ammo was about 150 shells to a pound, firing up to 600 a second. The M61 Vulcan was 248 lbs and required external hydraulic feeds. Ammo was 3-4 shells per pound, and also fired around 600 per second.
36:18 That's right, the original is the classic but the 2nd part is also good. BUT I definitely recommend Predators (2010) also, which was directed by a Predator fan, Antal Nimród. I think this is the best after the first and second.
The mini-gun in reality is always mounted on a pivot in the door of a helicopter or on a truck. If anyone tried to hold it while firing, the recoil would spin him around and he would strafe everyone in every direction.
Prey is also excellent (For me at least, second only to this original.) Predator is such a great subversion given how it starts and other 80s action flicks where the meat heads would just tear any threat up on screen. Here, all their strength and weapons are virtually useless, the Predator so far surpasses them that for the bulk of the time its just making sport of them. Its only through a mixture of luck and Dutchs cunning that the Predator is finally brought down. (Im pretty sure this was all very deliberate as well, even the subplot turns the whole action hero thing on its head.)
A Predator, a species FAR more advanced than humans, wipes out an entire modern day elite special forces unit, but a 90 pound sTrOnG wOmAn from the 1800s with sticks and stones can handle this one no problem because "they don't think she can" You would like that fuckin trash
That level of honour and sacrifice is not something that can be refused
Dutch is giving the Yauja everything he longed for on this hunt and the Yauja honours him by preparing his weapons as if he is going against the most dangerous being on this planet.
Fun fact: the Yauja's self-destruct took out enough rainforest to cover a hundred city blocks and the jungle grew back thicker and fuller within 10 years.
You need to watch Predator 2. It's based on the novel, Concrete Jungle.
New member of yours dear you’re super reactor of movies so fun snd 🎉
This is a good thing! I think many people do kind of just skip over it, and it's probably the one change I'd make to the movie, almost putting a spoiler right at the beginning.
@@wingnut5404I've heard people bring this up and it's a nice debate for sure. Myself because of how committed this film is to the B plot of the with the gurellia camp I think you need the ship there so the Predator reveal doesn't come completely out left and make the audience go wtf but in the bad way of totally lost now.
I appreciate you dont talk over the dialouge. So i understand the movie. Your good at editing. Cheers. Ok hotdog down a hallway lol.
Billy cutting himself that way is an old native American tradition. The warrior spoils the game by taking first blood himself, thereby denying the enemy any glory.
Thank you for the added context of the action being a Native American tradition. I don't believe I saw anyone else point that out yet
Your constant cuts made you cut away half of the movie. Annoying. You might have got doubled the views if you didn't.
I never realized that.
@@mikerodgers7620 You can see the gun break apart after the Predator hits it.
At that point the Yautja didn't want to just shoot Dutch, he wanted a proper duel. He recognized a worthy opponent.
Billy has seen the others have been skinned,so he purposely ruined his own hide by cutting himself
I was there that night and did a lot of the image capture of the late campaign.

Fun fact: the Predator was played by the late Kevin Peter Hall, who stood at a height of seven feet 2 inches, and played many similar monster characters during his career. Loved your reaction to this stone cold classic!
He was also the pilot in the copper.

"If it bleeds, we can kill it." My favorite Arnold line.
I totally forgot about the spaceship scene after like 10 seconds 😭
@@bunnytailsREACTS I always wondered if these little hunting safaris are broadcast back to their planet like pay per view fights or reality tv. Imagine back on the Predator homeward, you got tubby dad bod Yautja watching this while eating sugary snacks and drinking their version of beer. 🤣😂
Lots of people miss this scene, or don't understand what's happening. It should probably have been made more obvious because it's setting up the premise for the whole film. Still a great reaction by bunnytails, but I felt a bit sorry for her confusion during the movie...
Of the films in the franchise, I also like Predators (with Adrian Brody) and the movie Prey
@@UnderDriven17 Older movies were made for audiences with an attention span longer than 10 seconds
Predator 2 was poorly written. Tacky dialogue and stereotyped character development.
@@mikerodgers7620 Val Kilmer wasn't nearly as fun as Arnie either, imo 💀💀💀
Sonny Landham, who played Billy, ran for governor of Kentucky in 2003
26:05 Billy cuts himself as a taunt.

@@miguelvelez7221 Wow! Eloquent said🙂👏
@@drewskull5181 Your mileage may vary but that's my take. I think WAY too much about this stuff. Be safe out there.
The predator design is so iconic, and to think what it could’ve been if they didn’t bring in Stan Winston...
OH! I didn't make the Hopper connection to Stranger Things at all!!!

Predator mimicking and taunting Dutch's men is not only intimidating 😳 but downright scary too! Especially when the Predator uses Billy's laugh at the end of the film before the Predator nuked himself! -OG
Rumour has it they ran out of trees to kill
the late Sonny Landham (Billy) was an incredibly underrated actor.
The predator in this movie on his planet it's a well respected dentist. He was on our planet just for a safari.
By cutting himself Billy was stealing part of the Predators victory by drawing first blood.
26:26
As Dutch deduced earlier; the Predator didn't harm Anna because she was unarmed, which was correct.
a little bit of lore-dump:
The Yautja(which is the name of their species) have some strict laws when it comes to their hunting.
But it didn't matter cause Jean Claude went on to be a star in the 90s

1:50 Yep, you nailed it. That's Apollo Creed.
One element of this movie that may not be obvious in 2023 is that it came out at a time when there were tons of generic action movies. So the first part of the movie plays off those expectations, setting it up as a typical genre entry. Then the predator subverts all that. It made the movie really stand out.
Also, like Aliens, doubles as an analogy to the Vietnam War. Overly confident Americans enter a conflict but are soon overwhelmed by a clever enemy.
Yep it quickly goes come action movie to horror movie. Dutch isn't the last man standing he is the Final Girl in a slasher flick.
This movie was conceived with a joke. "Is there anyone Rocky can't lose to?" "IDK maybe an monster or an alien."

YES. A thousand times this.
(Personally, I've made my peace with Alien 3 and Terminator 3 and can accept them for what they are, but I understand everyone who can't, and no other entry in either franchise is even remotely bearable.) 25:00 how to get to graphic but I mean even and they probably used bullet physics which means that the entry hall would be small but the back of the hole would be really big which means Mack's back of his head would be completely blown off and there'd be a relatively small hole in the front so you still be able to see his face most likely
You did a sensational job with this reaction video. Unlike a lot of people you were able to follow along and understand what was going on throughout the entire movie. Great job.
Thank you
16 minutes in, when everyone starts shooting, they were responding to the first guy shooting - the rest didn't have a clue what he was shooting at but they assumed there was a good reason and no time to ask questions.
That makes a lot of sense. Thanks piloto :D
Don’t forget Richard Chaves who plays Poncho was also a vietnam vet.
33:03 LMAO quality commentary 😆
This was the first Arnold film I saw and I was very surprised at the twist and progression of the plot. I'm not into dumb action movies and pointless shootouts and explosions, but this movie wasn't heavy-handed, it just got more and more exciting. And the alien had a fascinating mask. When it takes off its helmet and roars - that's one of the highlights for me.
My father, a decorated combat veteran, never hunted. He told me that he didn't hunt, because he was hunted by and hunted the most dangerous prey ever, armed men.
Billy was challenging the predator to a fair one-on-one combat.
Billy cut his chest to deny his opponent drawing first blood in the fight.
A small amount of it gets explained in the sequel.
Also, the phrases, "If it bleeds, we can kill it," and "Get to the chopper" are well known phrases.
a heart warming story of a kind hearted alien trying to save a kid napped woman from a group of soldiers 😅
Hahahahah! I'll keep my thoughts to myself on that comment)
Anyhow, I loved watching this with you...
Get to da Chopper! Have a happy New Year!
Jesse always jokes about Arnie getting the idea of being a state governor from him. There are many videos with Jesse Ventura on TH-cam.
@@berranari1 Jesse the brains Ventura! Too bad he didn't run for president, some of his ideas were a little more moderate (like legalized/regulated prostitution) and wouldn't have popular with the far right voters, however...sigh. Now we have democrats funding human trafficking rings in pizza parlors, but I digress. =/
The predator has never looked any better than in this film.
bunnytails, the soldier kicked the bird, a vulture because it was eating the remains of a dead U.S. serviceman.
Although I think this is a great movie, I actually preferred Predator 2 even though it did not do as well at the box office because it explains a lot of things about the aliens not answered in this movie.
I high encourage you to react to Predator 2 which I also think you will enjoy watching.
I see. I guess I didn't see it correctly. I saw the bird on a log only.
This is the best Predator movie.
The first 2 Predictor movies are both good - but different - and the last one, Prey, is very different but also very good.
This movie is set in Guatemala.
The voice of the Predator, like the clicking sounds, was done by Peter Cullen, who is also the original voice of Optimus Prime from Transformers.
I'm not sure it works because the Predators are people too, and so would possess the universal capacities that any human would.
The Jim Hopper they mentioned several times is also the name of the sheriff from Stranger Things
32:51 I always say that this is the best movie "monster" ever made. It's exceptionally hideous, terrifying and realistic.
Yeah, and everything about it was totally unexpected to me. I guess I had this idea of what I thought it would be like and it was completely different, which left me pretty bewildered throughout the movie. Really great stuff!
Xenomorph
I'm old enough to remember when this movie first came out. It was a hit.
By far my favorite of the series.
I will watch your reaction later, and then come back to make further comment. For now, I must say that this original Predator movie is one of my all time favorite movies of any kind. I love the cast. I love the location. I love the plot. I love how they did the Predator. I love the writing. I love this movie!
It shows at the beginning of the movie a spaceship flying towards Earth and shooting a pod down to earth
I used a minigun when I played the original Unreal game! It was... quite mini compared to what you are describing lol
I wonder how many rounds per minute that weapon could fire.
The mini in minigun is a reference to the fact that is a much smaller but almost identical copy to the M61 Vulcan. The mini used 7.62mm rifle shells whereas the Vulcan was classified as a 20mm Autocannon which was considered a artillery shell
And a “gun” was typically only used to refer to a fixed or partially mobile artillery, autocannon, or machine gun placement.
@@LogicalNiko So... a lot of people misname pistols as guns!? My whole life has been a lie. Good to know the differentiation, though.
@@awall1701 3000-4000 rounds a minute.
36:18 That's right, the original is the classic but the 2nd part is also good. BUT I definitely recommend Predators (2010) also, which was directed by a Predator fan, Antal Nimród. I think this is the best after the first and second.
Sadly this is the only Predator movie I like. It went downhill after this one. But it's wonderfully 80's. Great movie.
Agreed. I haven't seen Prey yet though.
I'm sure it's already been suggested, but +1 for "The Thing".
The mini-gun in reality is always mounted on a pivot in the door of a helicopter or on a truck. If anyone tried to hold it while firing, the recoil would spin him around and he would strafe everyone in every direction.
He ain't got time for spinning and friendly fire.
The Predator took off its mask because audiences would have pissed off at being denied a full reveal.
A timeless classical 🎭

"He's Not Apollo From 'Rocky'?"
That is indeed Apollo Creed from the "Rocky" movies
That is indeed Apollo from Rocky. The actor's name is Carl Weathers.
Nice! Hopefully I'll get to see him in more roles in the future!
You'll definitely see him in Rocky II.
He died recently.
Predator 2 is it's own film, different and still very good.
Prey is also excellent (For me at least, second only to this original.)
Predator is such a great subversion given how it starts and other 80s action flicks where the meat heads would just tear any threat up on screen.
I agree. Very different tone, but a fantastic film and a genius reimagining of the predator storyline
A Predator, a species FAR more advanced than humans, wipes out an entire modern day elite special forces unit, but a 90 pound sTrOnG wOmAn from the 1800s with sticks and stones can handle this one no problem because "they don't think she can"
You would like that fuckin trash
Predator, Predator Two (Danny Glover Supercop in L.A.) and Prey are quite good.
Yes Dillon is played by Carl Weathers who played Apollo in the Rocky movies.
Phew! I would have felt pretty dumb if I was wrong there
You're correct. Carl Weathers played Apollo Creed. He also played Chubbs in Happy Gilmore.
GET TO THE CHOPPAAAAA...
My favorite Predator movie is AVP Alien vs Predator but I can always watch this again
