I was reading that John McTiernan fought for Carl Weathers to be in this film, against studio demands. McTiernan saw how Arnold watched and admired Carl. As both men came from athletic backgrounds, a nervous Schwarznegger (who hadn't really found his footing as an actor) found a role model in the remarkable Carl Weathers. RIP to another legend.

Kevin Peter Hall, who played the alien Predator, also played the Bigfoot, Harry, in Harry and the Hendersons. He also had a recurring role on the 80's TV sitcom, Night Court. He was a nearly 7 foot tall, African American actor, who also had a cameo as the helicopter pilot in the rescue chopper that rescues Dutch at the end of the film. Sadly, Kevin is no longer with us, as he passed away decades ago. I believe, he also portrayed the Predator again in the sequel, Predator 2. From what I've heard he was one of the kindest, friendliest people you could ever meet.

The actor who played the Predator was Kevin Peter Hall. He also had a cameo at the end as the black chopper pilot (the director wanted to give him a little face time for all his efforts). Kevin Peter Hall was over 7 feet tall and frequently played various creatures due to his unusual height. He was Harry in Harry And The Hendersons. A movie about a family that befriends Bigfoot and brings him home. You would probably really enjoy that movie. Kevin peter Hall was a super nice guy in real life. “He’s killing them so easy ….” It only seemed easy because the Predator was smart. He studied them before he acted. He waited until they were separated and took out the biggest and most heavily-armed soldier first, which was Blaine. After that, he carefully took the rest out individually, when he had the right opportunity. If he had taken on the squad as a group, they probably would have killed the Predator first.

Fun fact: For the heat mode view of the Alien they purchased a state of the art (at the time) actual IR camera to do the shots, but they couldn't get any decent footage out of it because their shoot location environments were so warm, so there was very little variation between human body heat and the ambient temperature. The images were just a melded indistinct haze. So they just ended up using much cheaper chemical and costume techniques and got a much better result.

The Kong and the NVA were masters of creeping up on your position without being detected and attacking from up close (they even had a saying: "To fight the Americans, you hold them by the belt buckle" to describe the strategy of fighting up close to negate the advantages of air support and artillery), and former NVA have admitted that shooting the hell out of the surrounding foliage and darkness could be effective at making them back off.

I have my own interpretation of this movie. See I think the title Predator, is referring to Arnold, and not the alien hunter. It's the man who is the ultimate predator here. Think about it: an advanced alien hunter arrives on a new planet. We never see it killing it's own species, so we don't know how their civilization operates, but the alien in this film seems to value honor (not killing unarmed people). Meanwhile it observes a bunch of big guys, killing 50 or so of their own kind, with scary big weapons, while making funny remarks about it. So they are worthy prey for him, until Arnold taps into mans natural survival/killer instinct, and becomes the Predator of this movie. He preys on, outsmarts, and takes down the professional hunter. So when Arnie asks What the hell are you, I feel like the Predator has the exact same question on his mind. So yeah, I think Arnold is The Predator.

The pitch for this is essentially "You know how when you have a monster movie, it's always about some person or group of people that aren't at all cut out to fight this monster? Either some random campers, or some fun-loving college kids, or some poor dude just driving along a remote highway? And these people are not equipped for a fight, or expecting a fight, or trained to fight, and are completely overmatched? Wellll.... What if in this movie the people facing the monster are all world-class badasses? Guys who ARE expecting a fight, who ARE prepared, who ARE trained, who ARE literally carrying as much weaponry as they can physically lift, and when the monster comes after them they're STILL getting killed one by one? (And yet the 'monster' isn't supernatural, it isn't unkillable, just very skilled and strong and tough)."
The way this changes the setup is great; everyone on this team knows they are dangerous killers, and when something starts taking them out (and making it look almost easy) we see that they struggle to keep it together and keep going.
And at the end, that last shot of Arnold, in the chopper; that man will never be able to fully move past this.
He'd already seen some shit, but now he's REALLY seen some shit, and I think it will always haunt him.
I'd expect that he quietly retires to his ranch in some remote corner of Montana, and raises horses or something, and tries not to drink too much, and has a lot of trouble sleeping at night, when all those stars are shining down from a cold and threatening sky.

Billy the guy who seemed to always know the predator or something was watching, is a Native American tracker, so in the story he’s very keen on picking up little things the other guys don’t notice. Part of it is superstition (like him having a bad feeling something’s watching) but part of it is that he’s very aware of his environment and can notice something as simple as the birds acting differently (since the predator is in the trees)

I think it's actually a satire of the classic action movies of the time. The gratuitous muscle shots are a sign, and the plot shows how their masculinity and weapons count for very little. The unarmed woman walks away completely unscathed. Dutch only wins through using his wits (although his muscles helped setting up the traps).

I can assure you NOBODY thought this movie was a satire in 1987. It was a " meek shall inherit the Earth, because they aren't worth hunting" kind of movie.

It's only a satire to lady boys of today. In the 80's everyone on screen was ripped like gods, even quite a few women. Very few people come close to that today. Both Chris's (Hemsworth and Evans) and Hugh Jackman come to mind.
This is why the 80's beat every other decade in the 1900's and even the 2000's.
