The shocking truth about Fortress Trade GLOSS paint.

  • My video focuses on testing the Fortress Trade Gloss paint and sharing my thoughts on it. This particular paint is designed for trade use, indicating durability and likely ease of application for professionals. As it's water-based, it utilises water as the primary solvent, making it environmentally friendly with lower levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In the video, I'll be examining its application, finish and overall personal view to give you an informed opinion on Fortress Trade Gloss.

    Oh that finish is not good, I’d be livid if I’d brought that to a job. I can see why you’re utterly unimpressed. I’d used the previous No Nonsense quick dry satin and water based gloss for price sensitive clients, and always found it really impressive. The Fortress water based gloss? About as impressive as a snuff film. Yes it’s cheap, but it’s previous range was cracking for the money, this isn’t.
    Either the formulation is totally knackered, or something has gone wrong in production, but either way that’s poor. Time, money and materials wasted. Come on Screwfix (Kingfisher), sort this stuff out.

    Johnstones aqua quard gloss. That’s the best water based gloss I’ve ever used. It’s even self undercoating so the rep says. I would always undercoat tho.

    Gloss paints can be the most difficult paints to formulate. Its more difficult as the high gloss is more likely to highlight any imperfections. Also antifoams can be more critical. With an antifoam you have to optimise the one you add. Antifoams work by being slightly incompatible in the formulation so they can remove the air from the paint film. If you pick one that is too compatible it will not remove the air. If it is too incompatible it can cause surface defects in the dried film. And sometimes you can pick one that is so incompatible it causes defects and also does not get rid of the foam 😒.
    Some times determining if its air bubbles or surface defects can be tricky especially from a photo from a video is difficult, even for a coatings chemist 😀. I believe the defects may be foam bubbles. So the antifoam they added is not doing its job. This may mean that it was not efficient to start with or has lost its efficiency by the time you got to use it. Foam testing may not be on the QC test in manufacturing. But with cheaper paints they will spend less time on the testing as well as the ingredients.
    So as you say it is sometimes better to pay a bit more for a well formulated gloss.

    Hi Phil, good honest review. Looked very ropey close up so won’t be rushing out to get a litre. The bubbles look like fish eyes that are normally caused by contamination of the surface, silicone, dirt, grease. Was it a tack rag or dust brush.? I might of tried conditioner in to see if it helped. Could see you struggled with the top panel brushing. Like you mentioned going over that dry surface wasn’t doing you any favours.
    Be interesting to hear if company contacts you.

    Its made by a german company who are part of the Hempel group, who make crown, among other paints and also sold in B an Q

    Water based is great for ease of use, brush cleaning,drying times,smell etc. But for quality gloss finishes forget it! The problem is the undercoat-it just doesn't flow out, so whether you use a water or oil based finish, it will have brush marks. Have you noticed how many new builds are satin! Water based paints dry too quickly for a quality finish!

  • @dannyboy9817

    Would the addition of a conditioner (Flotrol or similar) improve things? I realise that would somewhat defeat the low price of the paint as Flotrol isn't cheap. Just wondering if the paint is so cheap because it lacks those additives to start with. Maybe reserve budget paint like this for areas where finish quality isn't important (under stairs cupboard, outside bog, utility room that gets knocked about etc. But begs the question, why bother? For not much more money there are much better paints out there as you have shown Phil. Great video and very informative. Many thanks.

      Could be worth a try.
      But something like Bedec MSP is fantastic for using for a quick paint out... Two coats covers well.... 2.5ltrs is about £35.
      So not a fortune.

      @@ProfessionalPainterDecorator Thanks for your reply. Yes, see what you mean and as you pointed out, there are better and competitively priced paints available for quick spruce up jobs. It really renders the Fortress gloss pointless from the outset. A shame as from your earlier videos, the satin showed so much promise for the brand. What is so valuable from your videos and what us non professionals/DIYers need to appreciate is that if a skilled professional like you can't make it work, we don't stand a chance. If I had bought that paint and got those results, I would have blamed myself and lack of skill. Your videos are giving many of us a fighting chance of making good choices from the outset. I for one appreciate the value of that. Many thanks once again. Love your channel 😊

    i would hazard a guess and say that the door somehow is sucking the moisture out of the paint as it dries as opposed to the moisture content evaporating (obviously bit of both). Does it say you can thin it with water incidentally?

  • @grahamstacey3149
    @grahamstacey3149 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Looks horrible and could see how difficult it was for you to apply. Finish is full of cissing bubbles as though the surface was contaminated. Won’t be trying this after your review Phil. If a client wants gloss then I still recommend oil, it takes a bit longer to clean up and dry but it’s unbeatable for finish. If they have issue with odours or environmental concerns then I would use water based gloss. As professionals we should be skilled at applying all forms of paint, using oil based gloss doesn’t make us dinosaurs or stuck in the ‘old school’ as some are quick to comment. Well done with your honest review Phil.

    • @faucon618
      @faucon618 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Cissing due to surface contamination would be user error and not any fault due to the paint, would that be correct?

    • @grahamstacey3149
      @grahamstacey3149 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@faucon618 That’s normally true @falcon618. However Phil is always diligent with prep so it fair to assume that not the issue here. However it could be a an issue with the primer reactivating air air trying to escape or a chemical mixing issue with the gloss. Can’t say for certain but it has all the characteristics of cissing to me. Looks horrid whatever the issue so I won’t be trying this.

    • @faucon618
      @faucon618 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@grahamstacey3149 Lets leave assumptions aside.
      Phil bought this paint as a retail customer from Screwfix so Phil's first point of contact should have been with their technical department by private communication to try and resolve any technical issue with the paint. Then he could have moved forward with the video. It could be a batch problem from the manufacturer's end or a one-off problem from Phil's end caused by environment, contamination or application.
      Phil is calling out paint manufacturer's and questioning the standard of their QC and those who test their paints based on a one hit trial he carried out in his garage space that is unheated, where a high possibility of condensation is likely and is also possibly full of contaminates. Has he considered the possibility that the paint is fit for purpose and his testing area isn't.
      He coated up with primer-undercoat a previously, freshly coated door which he claimed to have sanded. Were all the previous coats of paint fully cured and what time passed between the application of the last coat of Satin and the applying of the primer-undercoat and then the time between that and the first coat of gloss.
      He used a brush, a kettle, abrasives, a duster and possibly a tack cloth. As at least three of those have been previously used to apply other coating or surfaces there is a high possibility of those carrying contaminants which could be causing the cissing of the paint.
      There are many likely causes of the paint cissing that could be down to the environment he used the paint in or the equipment used to apply the paint. They could be all ruled out by doing a second test in a different more controlled environment using an unused brush, kettle and abrasive and if cissing were still present its down to the manufacturer, in fact for the sake of £20 anyone could buy a litre of Fortress primer-uc and a litre of gloss and do a similar test of their own which would prove one way or the other where the fault in this case lies.

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator
      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I never said it was cissing.... they were small bubbles that popped on the surface.
      How about you get some of the paint to tryand see what you think to it.... use their Uc/Primer and then two coats of the gloss like I have.
