    I use crochet to protect my relaxed hair cause I seriously got tired of box braiding in both small and mid size box braids myself. I go 3 to 4 months but the itching gets the best of me. I doubt I could make it to 6. I do agree oil should be kept to a minimum. Tfs with us. Thumbs up👍🏾💜

    3-6 months, most people don't take care of their hair in a "protective style". That length of time will cause more harm than good for most people.

    • @IannaYvonne
      @IannaYvonne  3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Hello. Your right. 6 months is the MAXIMUM time I would recommend to anyone for a protective style. I have done this a few time with no issue so it is easily achievable for someone who KNOWS how to properly detangle and take down a protective style. I would recommend 3 months to a someone new to the process. Anything less than that is just a hairstyle 😆. Thanks for watching💕

    Hi Ianna, I received a virgin relaxer a few days ago and my hair is so thin/fine I can't even imagine how it could cope with synthetic hair. Also most vloggers/professional stylists recommend shampooing and deep conditioning weekly but you go up to six months without deep conditioning. Apart from the hair oil you mentioned how do you keep your hair moisturised for all those months? I'm so intrigued.

  • @hairhealing5437

    I can only do up to a month with protective styles. My hair loves water. Also, protective styles helps me keep my hands out my hair. It's really an issue for me so that's my reason for PS.

    • @MsStarryNights
      @MsStarryNights 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Yeah for me after a month, I have to at least re do the perimeter and few back rows to make it look fresh. After 2 months it has to come out or my hair will start to mat up. I think a protective style has no time frame. I think the 3 month minimum is subjective to a persons hair type and lifestyle.

    • @IannaYvonne
      @IannaYvonne  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Hello! Thanks for watching and for you comment 💕yes I agree.... there are no rules in hair care. It is all subjective. I am just giving information on what WORKS for me. I have had protective styles in for as long as 6 months. Does it still look “fresh” as you mentioned? No... but I feel when on a hair JOURNEY for growth, you can sacrifice appearance for end result. If I am putting braids in just for STYLE then two months is good enough.

    • @IannaYvonne
      @IannaYvonne  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Hello!! I keep my style looking as nice as possible by tying it down every night. I also try not to wash too often because that produces frizz. If I refresh I ONLY refresh the top middle of my hair and wear a low ponytail. NEVER my edges because of the tension. At 3 month with proper care my braids still look DECENT. Not amazing.... but I sacrifice appearance for growth. It easier to go longer with a full head weave with bang or closure. Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment 💕

    • @pocahontas4583
      @pocahontas4583 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My hair is the same. It grows so fast by 3 weeks I’m ready to “touch up” the edges and front when I have braids and twists. After 6 weeks the whole thing needs to be redone.

    I take down my braids in sections. I saturate each section with a leave in and oil and put each in a plait. I wrap up my hair and take down the next day for washing and deep conditioning. Taking my time works best for me.

    So... I didn't detangle well enough before washing my hair after 3.5 months of protective styling. It's taken me days to soften the mats and knots but I've also lost a ton of hair. I can already tell I'm going to have to cut off my relaxed part and start over. I'm so upset because I have a good 3 inches of new growth just wasted.
    Maybe it will look different once I'm able to relax the new growth, I don't know but right now I'm so upset with myself.

    • @IannaYvonne
      @IannaYvonne  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Oh no. I’m sorry about this set back. Yes if you don’t remove all the build up before washing... the soap locks that matted hair in place making it sooo much more difficult to remove. Have you tried the head and shoulders pre shampoo build up remover. Im not sure how well it works after you’ve already washed ... but it’s a miracle worker. It may still help.
      Also don’t be discouraged. You can’t tell how much you need to trim until the hair is fully straightened/ relaxed. It may not be as much as you think.
      If you do have to cut more than you would like consider a asymmetrical cut to save length where you can. For example if the front seems to have suffered the most damage... consider a layered trim/ cut in the front and keep your length in the back. With my set back I had to cut an asymmetrical bob taking most off from the back. But I loved the look and the back grows much faster than the front of my hair so it caught up in no time. Hope that helps a bit with the frustration you may be feeling after a set back ❤️ Reach out with any questions. Here to help if I can

    • @IannaYvonne
      @IannaYvonne  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I would recommend waiting a few days after (5 -7 days at least). That is because the relaxer can be irritating to the scalp and to follow that up by directly putting in a protective style with a lot of tension my be too much, especially for fine/ fragile hair. @@kijibeTo Hello. Thank you for watching 💕.... I NEVER redo the braids around my hairline/edges. The tension from the initial application of the protective styles is really all I’m will to put my hairline through. • @IannaYvonne
      @IannaYvonne  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello! I usually wash every 4 weeks with my sew-ins. With a sew in you have to wash in between the tracks so I better to wash when your hair has grown out a bit. Honestly you wash the scalp that you can reach 😆 because you may not be able to get to it all. Use a moisturizing shampoo. I usually don’t condition unless it’s the weave hair only ( for appearance). If you are new to protective styles two months is good but I usually push to three as a minimum when I am trying to see growth. Reach out with any other questions. Thanks for watching 💕

      Hello. I tie my hair down every night, wash only when I see buildup. Usually every 3-4 weeks. Use hair oils to moisturize and keep my scalp from itching. And if needed I refresh a few braid ( if the protective style is braids). Thanks for watching 💕

    3 months MINIMUM? hold on.
    Nah, a month is perfect lol.
    Some people really neglect their hair when it's styled and some are always in their hair when it's out. To me a protective style is just to keep my hands out my hair. I still wash and oil my scalp so it's going to frizz. I'm not walking around looking homeless because I'm not in the mood to at least take out and redo my hair every 4 weeks.
    Plus I don't wear wigs and weave. If I was, sure. With braids it's a pass.

      Lol. Thank you for watching! And I do understand…. Its hard to keep your braids looking nice after the three month mark…. But if growth and length retention is your goal you should shoot for 2-3 months. My relaxed hair is about waist length now. I reached this length by extending my protective styles. 🤷🏽‍♀️❤️

    Stop if your hair is breaking you need a protein treatment FIRST then a protective style

      Lol 😆 It was a crazy time. Busy with life so no time for hair. But my hair grew so much and I retained that length. Don’t recommend for everyone. That said… if you know what your doing your protective styles can stay in for quiet some time. Thank you for watching 💕

    If ur just gonna kill ur hair anyway with relaxers, why bother with growth?

    • @IannaYvonne
      @IannaYvonne  2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Relaxers don’t “ kill hair” because hair is not alive. They do weaken hair, can even cause damage…. But so does heat, hair color, braids, even excessive combing and manipulation. So unless your natural hair has literally never been touched or manipulated … your hair gets weakened and potentially damaged as well.
      Proper hair care practice is key. That’s how I grew my hair (to almost waist length now) 😉 Thanks for watching
